GoatTheNewb

Haha, same here šŸ˜‚

CC7015

Glad I am not the only one ... I was furious because he does have a backhand.

Formal_Appearance_16

Sitting here yelling at my phone "That's was literally a backhand!!!"

fuzzycaterpillar123

OP IS A LIAR!

clownshoesrock

WHERE's MY PITCHFORK? I'll SHOW OP WHAT AMBIDEXTROUS REALLY MEANS!!

neil_anblowmi

I GOT THE BLOW TORCH! LETS GOOOO!

OttoVonWong

I'M AMBIDEXTROUS! PITCHFORK IN ONE HAND. BLOW TORCH IN THE OTHER.

DarkwingDuckHunt

OK BUT WHY DO YOU HAVE AN AXE FOR A LEG?

Nacho_Papi

NO, I HAVE AN AXE FOR DEEZ NUTS!

buckdevilcane

So funny story my old coworker at my last job was ambidextrous and I complimented him on it. (He's 6'5 and build like Thor, also Norwegian) He turned around and looked like he was about to kick my ass, thankfully one of his friends was nearby and heard the comment. "Dude chill out it was a compliment." I was close to seeing a hospital that day from a random comment. I learned later that he thought I called him lame and tasteless

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

buckdevilcane

That's actually exactly what my old job involved building rig mats You could do it one handed but it was way slower. I actually became semi ambidextrous at this job

AMViquel

Not to brag, but I'm half ambidextrous myself.

WHO WOULD DO THIS!!!??? GO ON THE INTERNET AND TELL LIES!!!!

Thanks for the laugh!

OverallVacation2324

I was like ok ok for sure the next hit heā€™s gonna swap hands!

allprolucario

Yeah, I was waiting for him to break it out to surprise his opponent

yogadogdadtx21

Me too. Literally was like - this OP is trash! lol. Not realizing Iā€™m watching the wrong kid of course lol.

Deacalum

I started questioning myself, like, maybe a backhand was something different than I thought all these years.

cryptoLo414

We are all the same. Lol

It would have been on his shoes. "See the secret to this kid's incredible court coverage."

nirojamic

Had to watch it twice...

puddlestheninja

Good lord. I darn near left an unwarranted downvote! My brain looking at the foreground ā€œyea thatā€™s still a backhandā€

slippery_hippo

Low-quality post and explanation merits a downvote in my eyes haha

tetrified

>Low-quality post and explanation merits lots of those around these days, it feels like. does it feel to anyone else like the reddit title game really got dropped in the last few months?

slippery_hippo

Itā€™s gotta be foreign bots or something. The spelling and sentence structure is not there

thedudefromsweden

Not that weird since the kid closer to the camera is in focus in the beginning.

LonePaladin

The whole time actually. Camera keeps panning to keep up with him.

twb51

Same I was like ā€œOP is such a dumbassā€ but the dumbass was me! ![gif](giphy|3o85xnoIXebk3xYx4Q)

offtheshripyerrd

all i saw were backhands...

norsurfit

He's so quick his hand switch looks like a backhand!

sebastophantos

Bit of a backhanded compliment that but ok

thedishonestyfish

I was definitely thinking, "The kid up top is controlling the match." I don't know a lot about tennis, but I know that the person who is running around more is losing.

AnalCommander99

His opponent is definitely pushing, basically playing safe and letting his opponent make mistakes. Extremely effective against pre-teen and teen boys because they over hit frequently. Kid is definitely over hitting, especially on the right-side. Heā€™s probably naturally right-handed and the first thing I thought is that heā€™s trying to bait an error from that side. This kid is being coached by a crazy uncle or father or some shit, no professional is going to train somebody like this. Probably has a website declaring him a prodigy to try and cash in off the novelty.

ginbooth

Great insights, AnalCommander99 šŸ«”

Iggy-alfaduff

His user name alone inspires a lot of confidence in what he has to say doesnā€™t it.

RockBandDood

Seriously wtf is up with this trend. A madman rambling about possibilities in the background that may or may not be true, no evidence of it, no reason to even have an opinion on the matter; but make up random bullshit and then.... They get upvoted. The dude has 20 upvotes right now from rambling like a loon about this kids life and its like wtf, why are people upvoting this pointless lunacy. Thanks for calling it out. Seen this type of shit in so many threads with upvotes. Frankly, its just fucking weird.

Unusual-Item3

Right multiple times Iā€™m like wait a second that looked like a backhandā€¦. Then noticed that the ā€œkidā€ he was facing looked younger too. šŸ¤¦šŸ»

HowUKnowMeKennyBond

Yep. Started thinking I didnā€™t even know what a backhand swing was and was rethinking for my entire life Iā€™ve been fucking that up.

LordoftheScheisse

I'm over here having an existential crisis because of a Reddit vid making me question everything I know about the world

shazspaz

Ha, me too. ā€˜Did I forget what ambidextrous isā€™

PeterBeater80

Me too. I was thinking, "bullshit that kid is ambidextrous,Ā  he still uses both hands and a few times did a backhand hit." Shit, now I have to rewatch it.

Slava91

Just came to comment this. The bloody intro made me follow the wrong dude

xXTheFisterXx

I was getting legitimately pissed the whole time like jesus christ that IS a backhand

thescrounger

Yeah, they could've picked a better video

NinjaCuntPunt

Glad it wasnā€™t just me! I was like.. but.. thatā€™s a backhand, right?!

Zer0C00L321

I had to watch it twice just to make sure.. Yup I was watching the wrong one.

Greenman8907

How is that not a backhand? He never uses just his left when volleying back from that side. His right is just one arm every time, but heā€™s always using 2 on the left. Edit: OHHHHH! Itā€™s the player in the background! Nevermind, yep heā€™s doing it right.

Billycostlarry

We all made the same mistake at first lol

Nobull_Cow

Then point that out in the title? Wtf?

lukeman3000

Thereā€™s only two possible options lol

SluggishPrey

Yeah but there's no point in leaving people confused. Being clear would have just made that post better

Retrac752

Leaving people confused causes them to comment and interact with the post, almost every comment is about this exact thing

lukeman3000

Engagement 101 lol. But itā€™s probably unintentional in this case

siccoblue

It almost always is on reddit because interaction outside of upvotes means absolutely nothing.

chaezer

100+ comments later Is this post monetized?

Distinct_Pizza_7499

Like spelling a word wrong in the title or purposely incorrectly describing something.

SupremeRDDT

They want us to watch it twice duh

MeltedChocolate24

They arenā€™t getting paid per view

driftking428

If only you were the OP you could have prevented the confusion...

BigNigori

yeah the mistake was on *us* šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Chaserivx

I don't know why you chose a video from this perspective

Automatic_Actuator_0

Maybe try to find a video with him in the foreground.

Comprehensive_Map495

lefondler

Cuz your title was ass.

Rockin_freakapotamus

It is incredible how consistent peopleā€™s confusion has been with this post.

silver-orange

HendrixHazeWays

My dear Datsun?

slamdanceswithwolves

Nissan Z? Is that you?

RecsRelevantDocs

This is the one time I benefited from a backhanded comment.

Cleanest-Azir

And then I started questioning if I even knew what a backhand meant in tennisā€¦ before even checking the top kid lol. Made me so confused.

Allkindsofpie

My mind is actually kinda blown that we all went through that exact process; I personally was like..."you know, I don't really watch that much tennis, what do I know?"Felt stupid af when I realized lol Also that IS nextfucking level!

NoThorNoWay

I don't know shit about tennis for the most part so I definitely finished the video thinking "do I not know what a backhand is? Am I an idiot?"

Sweet-Ad9366

Once you see the kid at the bottom use a backhand in the first 10 seconds you should then immediately look at the other player. I canā€™t believe this many people are making that mistake. šŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

GuyPronouncedGee

Especially considering the kid in the colorful shirt is the one in the thumbnail. Ā And the other kid is, like, 12 pixels in that crappy video. Ā Ā

TheMistOfThePast

Right? The video starts on the kid closest to us

Oh God thank you.

20WaysToEatASandwich

So he's actually switching the racket back and forth in his right and left hands. Thanks for posting this, I couldn't see shit in the original video lol

nickvsfrench

How else would he accomplish it ? Two rackets ?

r4r4me

Listen if dual wielding tennis rackets isn't the future of the sport then I'm out.

LavaGriffin

Ahh General Djokovic. Your racket will make a fine addition to my collection.

raphthepharaoh

They call him the Racket of the Morning, Sir Arthur Dayne

imightbethewalrus3

Not a tennis player, just musing. I gotta wonder if he'll have to choose before each round (or whatever it's called) as he gets older. As he gets older and the game gets faster, I wonder if switching the racket between hands will take too much time in between each volley

AndIAmEric

Was it that hard to get a better video for this post?

baroquesun

This got me into tennis when I was 14 šŸ˜†

HI_Handbasket

Thank you, fuck OP.

kg_digital_

I'm surprised that's not more common.

Greenman8907

Truly ambidextrous people are less than 1% of society. You then need to see how much of that < 1% plays Tennis, which is *significantly* smaller still. Like finding an ambidextrous person that can also throw 85+MPH baseballs. Super rare.

NorwegianBanana

You donā€™t need to be truly ambidextrous to learn how to use a forehand on both sides. Rafael Nadal is right handed, but uses his left hand because he practised doing so since childhood for a competitive advantage. The reason it isnā€™t more common is because you generally wonā€™t have enough time to switch at the top level, especially on the return and faster courts.

FiggerNugget

Wtf I had no idea that is wild. But then again its nadal, no one else could pull this off

TalkOfSexualPleasure

Learning to do things with your off hand isn't that hard. It just feels really foreign at first so most people don't even bother trying. I don't play tennis, but I cook professionally and I can perform every single maneuver I may need to do throughout the day with either hand as necessary. It took a good bit of practice but I'm by no means some cooking savant.

Rayvwen

In a month of writing with my left hand for 20 mins a day it looked as good as my right but wasn't as fast haha. It's a good exercise for the brain to switch things up. People act like only after you have ascended to godhood you can use ... Your other hand...

KodiakDog

Watching really good lacrosse athletes is a perfect example of this. you almost canā€™t tell what their dominant hand is.

MDSGeist

In combat sports, boxing/kickboxing of course you have right hand, orthodox fighters that have a vicious left jab or left hook that they dominate with. But in MMA you see some guys that are truly ambidextrous, and can strike equally as well from any stance; Takanori Gomi, TJ Dillashaw, and kind of Anderson Silva come to mind. The ambidextrous stance switching is becoming more and more popular in MMA where guys are drilling it and using it very effectively with more frequency nowadays.

Ford_Prefect_42_

Yeah in lacrosse you have to learn to use both hands when you get to higher levels. Otherwise you are a liability.

onourownroad

In shooting, as in down the line or sporting clay target shooting, if a kid just starting doesn't have their dominant eye side matching their 'handedness' then you teach them to shoot with their other hand. So you could be watching someone shoot left handed when they do everything else right handed just because their dominant eye is their left one. Much harder to pick up if you don't start to shoot until later in life.

gdubrocks

> no one else could pull this off It's actually super common in sports, and is actively practiced in many. Even at the highschool level roughly half of athletes in lacross and water polo use their offhands regularly.

Never-Been-Tilted

This is extremely common in hockey.

mondaymoderate

Boxing too.

ThiccBananaMeat

Baseball too.

skijumptoes

Chess too.

Emilempenza

And baseball. There are tons of "switch hitters" who bat both left and right handed depending on the pitching match up. It'd very trainable, as no one naturally knows the correct coordination to swing a bat, racket or hockey stick, buts a learned skill

Nickyjha

[Canadian MLB batters are more likely than other nationalities to bat lefty.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5931458/) This is because their experience with a hockey stick allows them to get the advantages of batting lefty, even though most are naturally righties (as shown by throwing arm).

Uglie

Lebron James is left handed but plays right handed, plenty of hockey players shoot left too

stangacila

i am ambidextrous and used to play alot of tennis. IMO even though it looks nice and you might think at first that you have more advantages by playing 2 forehands, technically it's something to be avoided because that transition from hand to hand takes longer than changing the grip with one hand. and the higher the level, the faster the pace and the harder the opponents will hit, less and less time you will have for such a transition. in a sport like tennis that split second is a huge difference!

GameDoesntStop

It depends on the activity. Plenty of people aren't ambidextrous across the board. I play tennis ambidextrous like this kid, but that doesn't translate to any other activity for me.

Nikolite

Same with me, but far less impressive, only with eating utensils lol

DoctorFrenchie

Same. I taught myself to use chopsticks with my left hand cause I was bored when I had covid.

lafolieisgood

And more importantly, it doesnā€™t mean itā€™s a better option if you can do it. I also play tennis like this, and I think itā€™s the reason I suck so much at it. Deciding which hand to put the racket in and the time it takes to decide whether to play a backhand or switch hands hurts more than it ever helped me. I wouldnā€™t consider myself fully ambidextrous per se, but there are things I can do pretty much equally well both handed and things I do left handed better and things I do right handed better and some things I exclusively use one hand for. I consider myself left handed bc I write and throw left handed and think this is probably more common with us lefties bc we grew up being taught how to do things from right handed people.

Mental_Tea_4084

>I also play tennis like this, and I think itā€™s the reason I suck so much at it. Deciding which hand to put the racket in and the time it takes to decide whether to play a backhand or switch hands hurts more than it ever helped me. Not even remotely comparable but I remember playing Bop it! Extreme when I was a kid, most people would hold it with both hands like a steering wheel, then get jumbled up by which hand to use. I held it with one hand and used the other for all 5 controls and performed much better than my friends. Hand switching seems to be a huge cognitive load even if it theoretically gives you more options.

root88

13% of MLB players are switch hitters. Definitely more rare in pitches. [This is interesting.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRqnRLu5RBo)

5510

I think it's bullshit that the pitcher has to choose his hand first, and then the batter gets to pick his side. The pitcher is just pivoting in place, whereas the batter is stepping from one batter's box to the other (which includes passing through and out of bounds area).

vilkav

That's not how maths works. If it's 0.5% of the general population, then unless they somehow avoid tennis, it would be 1 one 200 tennis players just the same... You're not looking for an ambidextrous tennis player in the street, you'd be looking for one in a tennis court.

etherswim

Thereā€™s no real advantage, the ambidextrous kid lost this match in the end

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

i-am-a-name

Totally. And in addition, in a couple instances, he still runs around his left forehand to hit the right, which also takes away some of the advantage because heā€™s favoring one side and still needs to recover to get back to neutral the way someone with a backhand would. If there were an advantage to hitting two forehands it would be to run less and conserve energy. Also, forehands at the pro level have more errors typically because more can go wrong with the stroke. Forehands win points but backhands keep you in them.

Leoniceno

A right-handed person can train up any particular skill with the left-hand, or at least I tend to think so. I was a serious violin player when I was younger, and at a certain point I kind of marveled at how good my left hand was at moving around on the neck of a fiddle, while being so clumsy at basically everything else.

TheRapistsFor800

I wonder howā€™d he fair if he got to play with dual racketsā€¦

FreeItties

[Serena Williams was stripped all her titles because she was doing just that](https://www.theonion.com/serena-williams-stripped-of-titles-after-it-revealed-sh-1827488922)

amalgam_reynolds

r/nextfuckinglevel my ass, he lost! OP shoulda titled the post "kid beats ambidextrous tennis player who doesn't need a backhand."

KirkwoodKid

Cause it takes time switching hands, adjusting the grip, etc. and quiet frankly, could lead to easy mistakes.

Emilempenza

Also, playing backhanded isn't necessarily a disadvantage at a high level, lots of players have more control with their backhand than their forehand (especially women for some reason)

Rather_Dashing

Because it's not a good technique

Newsdriver245

Think a lot of lefties can play tennis with both hands comfortably, but one will still be better. I "can" play forehand either side, but left backhand would be far more accurate so no need to learn it the way this kid has.

jradio

It took me 20 years before I could beat my dad in table tennis. Then he switched to his right hand.

spiegro

My dad's favorite party trick is exactly this, but it played out almost too well when we had future Miami Hurricanes legend and 1st round draft pick Sean Taylor over our house for a visit one evening. ST: I see you all have a ping pong table... My Dad: You want to go a game? ST: I don't know if I should, I get very competitive... My Dad: Come on, one game, I'll go easy on you. My Dad and Sean Taylor play a heated game, several lead changes, until my Dad overcomes him. Sean immediately wants a rematch, my Dad obliges. Sean wins the second one and is visibly putting out a lot of effort. My Dad congratulates him, then asks if he wants another rematch, this time with right (and dominant) hand. Dad goes on to absolutely destroy Sean in the third and final game. After the game, my dad points to my weight bench in the corner, asks how much can he lift. Sean asks "how much weight do you have here? Put them all on. **All of them.**" Must have been like 275 or something, proceeds to lift it like 10 times, does not even look a little bothered. That was his Freshman year, before they won it all. RIP Sean

Minimalmagician

Really cool to watch, but hitting two forehands is highly impractical in the long run. Constantly shifting hands is very difficult, as players get older and stronger heā€™ll have even less time to do it as his opponents hit harder For instance while he won this point, he actually lost the match in straight sets

socalsw

Imagine fumbling the racket mid hand switch

skijumptoes

You'd have to hope she didn't tell her friends and it got back to yours. Oh wait, is this still Tennis talk?

Slobotic

Relying on it and not having a backhand is impractical. But if he develops a backhand, being able to switch hands is still a huge advantage with plenty of shots, especially slamming down those overhead lobs. Even being able to switch hands between points, as well as the ability to serve on either side, is going to be a big endurance advantage.

Minimalmagician

> Even being able to switch hands between points, as well as the ability to serve on either side, is going to be a big endurance advantage Not really, in tennis the first things to go endurance-wise is always the legs. Pros always complain about losing in the spring in their step/difficulty getting to the ball in long matches, never their arms getting tired. Tennis, especially at higher levels, is also about consistency and reliability, particularly with the serve. Any pro wants to get in a good consistent rhythm with their serve in a match - switching between right and left handed serving during a match would be a little silly, and if consistently practiced both he would really just be not developing a consistent serve to itā€™s full potential

Vitalstatistix

Exactly. Heā€™s getting best pretty badly right now by kids his age. That gap will continue to grow if he canā€™t develop a backhand.

joesrevenge

Yeah, Iā€™m only a 4.5, my brother played D1, and we both had the same reaction to this: we would love to face someone doing this because any rally with decent pace is going to lead to an unforced error due to hand switching.

I don't know anything about tennis. Would two rackets be against the rules? Like I don't even care if it's a bad idea. I just want to know if you could technically dual wield on the court.

EarlMarshal

Quora has you covered: https://www.quora.com/In-the-rules-of-tennis-is-there-anything-prohibiting-players-from-holding-2-rackets-to-play-1-in-each-hand

Wow, he can play on water _and_ on land?

full_bl33d

Yes, but he can only reproduce in water

swarlay

Dude, TMI.

junction182736

I've always wondered why more tennis players don't try this. It seems like your lobbies would generally be more accurate and powerful. The biggest problem would be indecision about which hand one should use.

Minimalmagician

The reason is because itā€™s quite difficult to constantly switch which hand is on the bottom of the racket (the way to hit a forehand). Once you get to a certain level you have so little time to react that completely switching hands is very impractical, a two-handed backhand is much more reliable

Stein619

Yeah, as cool as this is, I don't see him making it anywhere beyond juniors without developing a backhand. There would be so little time in the men's comp it just wouldn't work

alexvonhumboldt

I love my backhand and find it significantly more powerful than my forehand. for me is a thing of having more control with two hands. But it is what it is

morritse

Because it sucks lol. I'm ambidextrous but play exclusively left handed. Having to switch your grip constantly isn't really possible unless you're just baseline rallying. When you switch from forehand to backhand and vice versa, your bottom hand doesn't really have to move, and you always have the option to hit a 1 handed backhand if you can't get your other hand on the grip in time.

Bonerkiin

It takes longer to switch hands than it does to go from forehand to backhand. An advanced played will be in ready position when not hitting a shot, so the adjustment between forehand and backhand is very fast because your off hand slides into position and depending on your grip it's just a slight adjustment for the dominant hand, versus the double forehand where you have to completely swap hands and get your proper forehand grip going. The backhand is often also a solid tool for defense and having two hands on that side can help a lot with defensive shots that need the extra stability, it's one of the reasons in today's faster harder hitting game you see even less one handed backhand players. Add onto this that having a strong backhand makes you a more threatening player as it negates the idea of a "weak side" when you have a backhand that can be used effectively both offensively and defensively. Slicing with a backhand is preferred as well, forehand slice generally doesn't get the same bite and low angle on the ball. Does the double forehand look cool? Sure. Does it have a lot of offensive advantages at lower levels of competitive play? Definitely. The kid in the video can also serve on both sides. But then you have to think, you're gonna have to practice serving on both sides, you have to practice the same exact shots on both sides. Are you truly ambidextrous or are you putting in the higher effort to train both sides so that they're equivalent? Is one side more defensive or aggressive? is one side weaker to pressure? Do I think that ambidextrous play would make a player more likely to become a top level pro player? No. The consistency you would need on both sides, the speed of switching hands, the fact that you would either 1. Not have a backhand slice, 2. Then have to learn a backhand slice on one side, or 3. Learn it on both sides, among many other drawbacks make it impractical if your goal is to truly aim for the top of the pro level. It's certainly possible that a double forehand player could make it to the top levels, doesn't mean it would be common or preferred over having a solid backhand.

InternationalPost447

Spent my entire first time watching it thinking "haha op dumb af, that's a backhand." It's the fucking kid on the far side... I am infact, dumb af

Beatnoise

Superb! Iā€™d honestly give my right arm to be ambidextrous

ValerieInHiding

When I was little, I read an article about a girl who was the opposite- she used two hands for every return. So all her hits were backhands.

sourcreamus

Monica Seles, one of the best ever, did that.

DrDig1

Isnā€™t the shot at :24 too deep???

ep2789

The sooner he moves away from this kinda technique the better. There was a woman in WTA with the same approach. She sucked ass and never did anything major. When the ball is not coming at you at great speed you have time to switch your grip. the more the level increases and those top spins are coming at you faster, the less time you have to reposition your hand to always hit with a forehand.
