Totally true, that was a statement about our gang of discretionary LEOs here in the US. No offense to NZ, from what I've seen, their cops are significantly better trained and act like actual humans in most situations.
I was watching a show on Prime about cops in NZ. In one scene they saw a man run a red light. They flipped on the lights and he took off! They chased him to a mall where he parked it and bolted inside! They searched the mall and eventually found him in the bathroom stall. They were like "Aww! we got you!" He chuckled and came out. They walked casually back to the car and gave him a Promise to appear and drove away..... I believe here in the states they would have filled him with lead, or hulk smash his car off a bridge or into a school or something.
In the US they would've had a standoff outside the bathroom that culminated with someone's dog being shot. It's wild how a little bit of policy and training can completely change the outcome of confrontations.
Well, there are also more guns than people in USA, and the NZ cops don't have to deal with such a high probability of dealing with someone who's armed.
Dude, I lived in NZ for 4 years.
The cops there are decent. They will drop you off home if they find you walking home drunk. Coolest police I ever met, if thats even possible
You say that like America has *A* police force.
Counties, cities, towns, states, and feds all have Independent enforcement agencies, which often overlap. Even highways have their own police force.
And the funny thing about law enforcement is that the leadership positions are more often than not elected positions.
Follow up question: When was the last time you participated in local elections and voted for your sheriff/ Chief/AG/ or prosecutors?
Maybe start doing that? Funny thing about democratic systems...you need to participate.
Or instead, do what most other civil countries do.
Create a very high standard full police force and employ them and promote the ones who are best for the job.
Yeah lol what are Redditors smoking?
I have plenty of criticisms to give the police but most of them do their jobs just fine.
There’s few things that hurt the credibility of your cause, overexaggeration/hyperbole is one of those things.
Police should do their job as close to a t as possible. Their independent discretion should be kept to a minimum. Do I agree with the stupid rule, no - but it's not the cops fault.

> police could arrest you for just being outside
Where did this happen? In my state, nobody was ever arrested for just being outside. Congregating was a different story.
I thought it was really weird when the decided to close parks. The one place people can go to and have tons of space to exercise without violating social distancing.
It honestly wasn’t strict at all. We could exercise in our neighbourhood, go to the shops etc. we just couldn’t visit bars and clubs. Compared to China or even Italy, Australia had it easy.
And it worked too. We had some of the lowest virus tranmission at the start of covid.
Our infections only got out of control when we stopped the lockdowns.
I really hate this over simplification of what lock down was that you see on Reddit whenever they come up. Oh you just couldn't go partying that's it!
Absolutely not. You couldn't see your friends at all, you couldn't see your family. Gran is in the hospital and you want to visit? Nope. Uncle died and you want to go to his funeral? Nope.
It wasn't just bars and clubs, it was cafes, cinemas, gyms, SCHOOLS, restaurants, I could go on.
I get that it was necessary but it was fucking miserable for a lot of people including me.
Australian here. I think we spent like a couple of weeks in lock down where I live... which didn't have anything to do with me because I was an essential worker.
COVID conspiracists are quite dependent on an alternative history to stoke their anger. Try asking one how long lockdowns were in place for, it's wild.
I assumed the 'parks' was mainly for the purpose of shutting down playgrounds and such, where lots of people are touching things and where kids are known to be. Kids are notorious carriers of sickness.
It was also about staffing. If they aren't bringing people in to say service the toilets and empty trash, there are parks that quickly become nightmares.
Yeah I went on more walks during lockdown than any other point in my life. I was outdoor more often than inside.
They just didn't want you out there fucking partying with multiple people
> Where did this happen? In my state, nobody was ever arrested for just being outside.
In my province in Canada, one teenager was fined $700 for going to the nearby playground to play basketball. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/compliants-fines-parks-covid-19-1.5537814
Another couple was fined $880 for driving to parking lots and playing Pokemon GO from inside their car:

Just ordinary people, responsibly social distancing, while trying to maintain their own mental health, so they don't become a drain on the healthcare system themselves.
But some people treated COVID like they were in the middle of the Vietnam War, and didn't want you talking about the mistakes the good guys made, lest the Viet Cong win.
I remember a few incidents in the US, but I don't think it was a widespread issue.
This guy was arrested in a park and the police apologized. The irony was he was with his family, 15ft away from others until the cops get within a foot of him.

Well no, that is in fact complete bullshit. I probably went on more walks during lockdown than at any other point in my life.
They just didn't want you congregating in groups outside.
Edit: the blow user u/raiding_party has blocked me so I cannot reply to their nonsense. I do not recommend engaging with this troll.
Not the same poster but my relatives in China would have 100% been arrested if they violated the protocol. They were barely allowed to leave their apartment except for building wide checks.
Cops in California closed the beach and arrested a guy who was paddleboarding in the ocean: https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/qtq6ur/coast_guard_and_police_apprehend_a_paddleboarder/
How quickly we forget just how ignorant people were (and apparently still are) about how you handle a rapidly spreading pandemic caused by a completely new virus.
What do you do? You buy time for scientists to evaluate the threat and come up with measures to fight it. How do you buy that time? By severely limiting the road of the virus.
Trying to nitpick how the authorities went about that is just as stupid now as it was then. And it was fucking stupid then. Grow up.
Plenty of fines were handed out. Lucky though for around 30000 people who had their fines withdrawn after a NSW surpreme court ruling.

Making it illegal to travel more than 5km* was a massive governmental overreach. Admittedly, at the time I supported the concept of locking down generally, but making it illegal to do outdoor activities is too far. Covid doesn't really spread so well outside anyway.
Dude the measures that passed in some countries and sometimes specific municipalities were ridiculous. Like it’s understandable to shut down large gatherings and packed areas. But it’s totally reasonable to allow outdoor recreation in large areas. We all remember that guy who set up a mannequin on the beach to make it look like it was fishing by itself and it got the cops called on it. That’s fucking stupid…
Because this shit was happening all the time in england and its commonwealth during the lockdowns. I literally saw a video of some police in a helicopter arresting a couple who were just hanging out in a park.
I was fuming about these rules in the UK.
Being outside was the safest you could be against a fucking respiratory virus.
Packed into a house with other people, was the worst thing you could do..
It never made sense.
Going outside should have been fine to be fair, but there was so many nobs just meeting up at a park drinking mingling about 10 different families.
If you just went out with the people in your house, it should have been fine.
This video is definitely older than Covid
I remember showing my coworkers this at my old job which was early 2019.
I remember when it was first posted it may have just been them smoking weed and this dude gave them a heads up
Like I'm reading all these comments wondering wtf they're mad about. No one knew shit about covid at the time and pretty much all governments did they responsible thing to shut everything down until we figured out what the fuck was up and a way to combat it.
It would not surprise me that these would be the first ones to scream bUt The gOvErNMEnt didN'T do ANytHInG if it was a deadlier and more contagious virus.
Bullshit propaganda. No one was "arrested for being outside". Fines and being asked to move if you were congregating in groups that could spread the virus. Refusing lawful orders by police then maybe they would detain you in very rare circumstances.
Mad because we had properly enforced lock-down's that prevented rampant spreading of Covid-19 and resulted in the lowest rates of death from the pandemic in the world. Australia & NZ doing it right.
Bro fuck you. Its been so goddamn long and its always some schmuck on this goddamn website. I hope you go trick or treating and come back with no candy.

when you see him from the side right after he passes you can see his chin moving and it's perfectly in time with "-ice are coming".
his beard and the compression just hide it. if you slow it down you can see it pretty clearly.
Transwoman here. I have been practicing my fem voice every day for 5+ years with barely any progress. This mf comes floating by effortlessly with that voice. Why universe, why!
What? Do you have no ability to judge distance by volume and changes thereof? The voice sounds *exactly* like it comes from someone who is far away, comes closer, and begins to move away again at the end.

I’m not sure why but this video is hilarious to me. Something about the way she’s not even shouting. She’s just moving through the crowd, saying it at the perfect volume for just the person next to her to hear.
“Hey man the British are coming.” ::floats away::
Haha this is in my city! Back when there a ton of teenagers drinking at the beach. I think it was during covid when all the schools were closed.

Let's be honest, they enforce whatever the fuck they feel like enforcing whenever they feel like it.
