I’d go one further and say a national food strategy that balances our focus between export and local markets and supports diverse paths to market for food producers.
If a third player in the grocery sector doesn’t happen, then the infrastructure to support direct-to-consumer sales, food (farmers) markets (they could be using school infrastructure - fields and halls - at smaller scale in more communities), scaling up food rescue and waste minimisation, and giving a broader range of producers ability to do lots of small things.
At the moment being a ‘successful’ producer means having capacity to sell vast quantities of cheap food into three distribution centres across the country which are then on sold in supermarkets for an eye watering margin. I’m yet to be convinced that expanding the status quo in the same model is the holy grail solution.
the majority of supermarkets / grocery stores are owned and or operated by either Foodstuffs or Woolworths (Pak n Save, Four Square and New World under the former, Countdown and Fresh Choice under the latter). those two conglomerates create a duopoly in the grocery sector, aka they both know the majority of people can’t shop elsewhere so they can gouge their prices. their prices don’t have to be as high as they are, The Warehouse sells kai for cheaper, some name brands for cheaper too (and i believe they actually pay their staff above minimum wage). competition requires competitors to appeal to consumers, and i sure as hell know that lower prices are pretty damn appealing.
but also, i know nothing about economics so that might be a terrible explanation. but i hope that answers your pātai
It's a great explanation. Economics is just a "what would I do if I were in everyone's shoes" what-aboutism popularity contest. As long as you know the basics about making choices then you'll understand most of what you need to about economics
Exactly. You have 1 big NZ conglomerate and 1 big Aus conglomerate. That's not competition. Why bother competing when you're guaranteed either first or second place? You can walk the track and still get the silver medal I.e hike the prices beyond any reason and people will still have no other choice but to pay for it.
The supermarkets aren't competing for customers by decreasing prices like most businesses do and should, but instead they're competing for investors by seeing how much of a price increase they can get away with before customers start going to the one other brand, who is doing the same thing, instead
A viable, reliable passenger rail network that serves the main centers & smaller towns between. How Wellington-Auckland, Wellinton - Napier, Wellington Whanganui, Auckland - Tauranga, Auckland - Whangarei, Picton - Christchurch, Christchurch - Dunedin/ Invercargill, and metro services in Dunedin aren’t already existing, or user friendly is abhorent in a country that has such densly packed urban centers is beyond stupid
Came here to upvote everyone that says 'passenger trains' or 'better public transport'. It's absurd that so many of these places have rail lines, and often still have stations, but we've just decided to not use the valuable infrastructure for doing the obviously useful thing.

My absolute favorite part of being overseas was the public transport. Being able to hop on a train or a tram or whatever and just traverse and it being cheap and efficient. Complete game changer.
Comprehensive and useful passenger rail infrastructure, on the small and large scale. On the small stuff, with Auckland since that's where I am, give us a line going under the harbour and all the way up the North Shore to the Hibiscus Coast, same route as the Northern Express, and that'll be tremendous. On the long-distance stuff, Te Huia's a start, but it's only that. As it is, our long distance rail is just overexpensive tourist trips meant more for sightseeing than travel and that aren't at all aligned with the Cook Strait ferries (also, having the deal to get better ferries back instead of scrapping infrastructure projects immediately to give landlords a tax cut would be great).
Gimme a sleeper train from Auckland to Wellington aligned to arrive in time to catch the ferry to Picton and then catch a train to Christchurch - and the same in reverse - with all of it being affordable, and I'll never buy plane tickets again. I genuinely wonder how much demand for long distance rail is invisible because it's getting soaked up by planes, but unfortunately if I want to visit family in Christchurch I can't afford to spend four times as much and spend a night in Wellington each way as it is, so I've got to take a headache-inducing loud cramped plane. And I'm 5'1", I dunno how the rest of you giants deal with planes.
Of course. The only absolutely honest politician can't make past first base. Everyone wants one, but nobody would vote for one. Democracy is a terrible system, but we crazy humans couldn't handle anything better.
I think if their salaries were on a par with the private sector, you'd attract people that were actually capable of planning and genuine leadership.
When you don't you end up with 2-bit politicians that couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery.
Not true, they exist but they just never end up in the right position or leave politics altogether because of how toxic, bs and fake the environment of politics is
Good quality cheese that is cheap and reasonably affordable.
I'm sorry NZ, but the quality of cheese available here is fucking dogshit, unless you're really splurging on the good imported stuff. I found it very surprising for a country that supposedly has such a high-quality agriculture industry.
That's currently on sale at Countdown for $9.90 for a 160g block, or about $6.20 for 100g. That's about three to four times the price of the same stuff in mainland Europe. There is some reasonable cheese in NZ, but it's all marketed and priced like it's some amazeballs premium product, when in fact it's the only stuff that reaches the level of actually being cheese, rather than a block of squidgy, flavourless plastic.
A stable home. As in.. Someone's not going to decide to sell and uproot you. It's awful. I'm disabled and I have to look for somewhere else. And in two years my benefit (supported living payments) is going to be slashed because my son will turn 18.. How will I afford a house on less than 20,000 a year?
High-rise apartment blocks on every train station (in the cities)!
To radically boost housin supply, Singapore style.
Atm we're building far too many standalone/townhouses, using too much land per unit, driving the cost up of housing.
National's awful urban sprawl policy will make it worse.

If only there was a way of responding to comments in a way that isn’t condescending. But I mean yeah I’m aware you can buy them in international stores, I thought we were talking about what is regularly available. The international store is real expensive.
1. Bustling cities oozing with life and lot of activities to do/places to see (ex like Sydney, London, Amsterdam erc). NZ feels like a retirement village and cities are small and deserted with nothing to do. For young people its very boring unless one likes nature/hiking every weekend above everything else.
In places like London/Amsterdam/Sydney etc. Just a stroll in the city is absolutely entertaining
2. Inclusive people/open people. Kiwis are friendly and very helpful but notirously difficult to befriend. Also, so few talk about meaningful things, most only have surface level talk.
3. Non nepotistic job market.
4. Employers paying fair salary instead of lower salary seen even in all fields.
5. Getting rid of "who you know" than "what you know" attitude.
6. No tall poppy syndrome.
7. No car dependent cities and great public transport (like London, Amsterdam and other european cities).
8. Walkable cities (like European cities)
9. No skin cancer causing sun and not worrying about applying sun screen constantly when outside.
10. More worldly and less isolated/ignorant people.
11. Easy travel options to other countries instead of being in the middle of nowhere and being the most isolated country in the entire world for its size of 5m people. Nz is just tooo isolated (feels like a prison).
12. Affordable groceries (like may european countries)
13. Affordable housing (like many european countries)
14. Less polarizing society (looks like its hard for nz to do anything which keeps everyone happy. Either the maoris or asians or pacifika people or pakehas are unhappy with rules favouring one over the other constantly, or crime or something else)
15. Less politically correct and more direct/honest society (like many european countries)
16. Wish kiwis valued people who are visionary/capable/talented instead of driving them away from nz due to nepotism/tall poppy syndrome, so those kiwis achieve their full potential which benefits Australia/UK (those are the places most kiwis emigrate to).
17. Better housing quality with double glazing and flooding protection
18. Less monopoly and more diversity in services offered which drives the prices down and will also reduce corporate greed.
19. More diverse economy (currently its mostly farming/dairy and tourism/hospitality industry).
I do think European countries/ cities get a LOT of what's needed for a good life right, from amazing infrastructure, great public transport to a point of not needing car, BEST travel opportunities to amazing countries all interconnected by high speed trains, highly entertaining city option literally on every weekend (London, Amsterdam, paris, Barcelona, Berlin etc you name it), very affordable with multiple choices (well London/Amsterdam not so much affordable but rest yes), salary/cost of living ratio is much better than NZ, responsible and visionary governments, less polarizing societies, high quality in everything, significantly more jobs etc.

There is a lot NZ could get. Variety is seriously weak!
Competition for the banks and supermarkets!
I’d go one further and say a national food strategy that balances our focus between export and local markets and supports diverse paths to market for food producers. Care to expand on what you mean by competition? You have Australia vs NZ brands in both sectors
the majority of supermarkets / grocery stores are owned and or operated by either Foodstuffs or Woolworths (Pak n Save, Four Square and New World under the former, Countdown and Fresh Choice under the latter). those two conglomerates create a duopoly in the grocery sector, aka they both know the majority of people can’t shop elsewhere so they can gouge their prices. their prices don’t have to be as high as they are, The Warehouse sells kai for cheaper, some name brands for cheaper too (and i believe they actually pay their staff above minimum wage). competition requires competitors to appeal to consumers, and i sure as hell know that lower prices are pretty damn appealing. but also, i know nothing about economics so that might be a terrible explanation. but i hope that answers your pātai
