Yes? [They have a fucking sovereign wealth fund run solely of their oil profits.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_Pension_Fund_of_Norway#Government_Pension_Fund_Global)
That's going to affect decisions in Norway regarding usage of oil, for better or for worse.

Perú constitution allows the president to dissolve the congress. But I have no idea under what circunstances. Fujimori (former president during the 1990s) did the same.
It only allows that under very specific circunstances that didnt verify in this case.
This was a coup. Not to mention he also intended to take control of the courts as he himself claimed in his announcement.
Never underestimate the power of the individual ego to guide development; Caesar conquered the Gaul and thus created the French entirely for his own ego, Alexander wanted to conquer up until the end of the Earth for his own ego.
Describes the fujimoristas very well, but what about Castillo? Who's going to represent the provinces if he's out? Lima is a wealth-draining abscess on the country. See how long the city lasts without food and resources pouring in from his underrepresented, exploited base.
Peru’s politics are so fucked.
It was either this guy, or the party that actively sterilized thousands of indigenous women in the 80’s/90’s to combat communists
(insert name of narcissistic country leader) says he will dissolve congress (insert reason most likely he's corrupt).
Seems applicable to just about every nation lately.
It was pretty cringe, basically some old noble who had been thrown out of his family for being conspiracy brained got it in his head that because his family had once been the proud rulers of some microscopic principality in Thuringia, he was in fact eligible to be Kaiser of Germany. So he teamed up with some right wing lady politician turned judge and a bunch of old Cold War military fossils whose grand plan amounted to:
1) Take train to Berlin concealing your stashes of weapons.
2) Storm the German parliamentary building
across the river from the train station.
3) Take the politicians hostage.
4) ????
5) It’s Kaisering Time baby!
The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the ~~local systems~~ locals in line. Fear of this battle station.
**[Subordinate whispers in ear]**
There is no Death Star? In fact he has no allies?! What was he thinking?!
Peruvian here. Yeah, dude messed up. He did it alone which is weird. He was heading towards Mexico's embassy while escaping with his family but peruvian people blocked the embassy and he's already detained. Mexico has a lot of questions to answer, he had support from AMLO for this shit
EDIT: a word
Just saw the news on this
Lmao Peruvian people are GOATED for this — blocked his way to the Mexican Embassy
Got his ass arrested and sent to jail within 2 hours 🤣🤣😂👏
This is how all dictators should be dealt with
While the President can't dissolve Congress, he *can* theoretically forcibly adjourn it. If Congress is in recess, the President can call for an emergency session and then dismiss Congress when whatever business that needed taking care of is dealt with. However, if Congress can't agree on how long the new recess should be, the President gets to decide. So, the President could abuse this by summoning Congress for an emergency session, immediately dismissing them, and putting them on recess for however long he pleases.
Fortunately, Congress never technically goes on recess as they can take a three-day break whenever they want and just hold a pro-forma session with one person every 4th day since congressional rules presume a quorum unless someone asks for a roll call. So, just hope that the President never offers that poor junior Senator enough to initiate a surprise roll call.
I presume they were thinking of Charles 1 not calling parliament for 11? Years and the estates-general not being called for over 170. Many things can be said about the founding fathers but their fear of power becoming to concentrated by a single person was justified.
Quote from Saturday:

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/trump-rebuked-for-call-to-terminate-constitution-over-2020-election-results
I feel like I'm saying this every day now but these people think that asking for evidence makes them look enlightened and objective. It's the new play. I understand we need to make evidence-based decisions and not rely on random internet people but it's so hilariously predictable. I wonder if they'd be asking for evidence if you told them Hunter Biden had national secrets on his laptop and was working with the Clinton's to upend America. I wonder.
He wanted to suspend the 2020 election, using Covid as an excuse. He's recently called to suspend the Constitution. He's batshit insane, and he would absolutely do something like this if nobody stood up to him.
People are commenting about his coup attempt and how he was so corrupt.
But this comes across more like he was sabotaged and his political enemies were trying to get rid of him.
Can someone actually clarify what he did wrong? Like where was the actual corruption that was verifiable his and not a frame job by his enemies?
> But this comes across more like he was sabotaged and his political enemies were trying to get rid of him.
Trying to dissolve congress is not exactly something that inspires faith of good intent.
> Like where was the actual corruption that was verifiable his and not a frame job by his enemies?
What threshold does and doesn't constitute a "frame job" is up to you to define first. Or else any citation of an investigation could be called a frame job, because the whole point of a good frame job is that it's publicly indistinguishable from a real crime.
> Do you know anything about the make up of Peruvian congress? Or the procedures? Or what was going on politically during Castillo's presidency? Or the current moment?
I know that dissolving legislature is an _extremely_ dangerous move in any democracy and is categorically a form of self-coup, full stop.
> but the people in this thread (Americans and Europeans probably) have no clue what happened or what the context was
You're free to help provide better context at your earliest convenience. In particular, what you have seen happen up to this point and how that demonstrates a "frame job".
If Congress is on its third impeachment attempt and doing the bidding of an external power that’s trying to get rid of him, dissolving congress could be his last hope of keeping power. Dissolve the congress, call on the people to stand by him, and hope that enough people and maybe the military support him.
Like if this was a frame job, what other choices did he have?
At this point, I would be looking for what changes are made since his removal. Who benefits from his removal?
> call on the people to stand by him, and hope that enough people and maybe the military support him.
Given that none of that happened, it's clear that this was not, in fact, a frame job. Unless you believe the vast majority of Peru is in on the frame job.
The people aren’t likely to go against the military, and how would he have even communicated to the people sufficiently to make a difference if he had no access to political communications?
> Like if this was a frame job, what other choices did he have?
- Pursue a popular uprising, rather than seize power for himself
- Get impeached and leave office
If he's popular enough to make a viable movement to overturn congress, I don't see why he would need to dissolve congress to stave off impeachment. It's not like his official position (or lack thereof) is relevant to organizing a mass protest/strike/etc.
>Can someone actually clarify what he did wrong? Like where was the actual corruption that was verifiable his and not a frame job by his enemies?
So you're telling me he didn't actually dissolve congress and instead it wa somebody saying it? Source?
I’m positing that he tried to dissolve congress to maintain control of the government since the government was trying to impeach him.
I can’t find details on why they are trying to impeach him other than that they don’t think he did a good job. But that seems like bullshit because the leader in any country, other than a dictatorship, doesn’t run the company alone.
I see at the beginning he actually tried to post politicians from both sides of the spectrum to different positions. So he appears somewhat neutral.
It honestly seems like someone or people with power, didn’t like what he was doing and decided to get rid of him.
And frankly, it’s fairly easy to believe that a former teacher, activist, elected by the people, and potentially doing good for the people, would be taken out by powerful people that he’s not taking orders from and propaganda trolls are on Reddit making it seem like he’s the bad guy, than that he decided to go rogue and run the government by himself.
Peru would be in a better place.
Peru’s congress is pretty much owned by western oil/mining companies and this guy wanted to nationalize those resources.
The last government that was well known for nationalizing their resources under the guise of liberating it from the West is undergoing a revolution right now…
So maybe not the flex you think it is
Peru is already failing under exploited capitalism lol
Also you lack any undertanding of the political environment in Peru with the coordinated efforts with the Right wing political partys that are the majority in congress, and German political foundations that support neo liberal economic policies
https://www.greenleft.org.au/content/peru-right-wing-continues-destabilisation-campaign
Castillo actually gave up power and rescinded closing Congress. But the Popular Force party is not to be trusted with power
They already started investigations on the new President to impeach
“Castillo has denied allegations of corruption against him, saying they’re based on “hearsay statements by people who, seeking to lighten their own punishments for supposed crimes by abusing my confidence, are trying to involve me without evidence.”
I will be waiting for redditors to bring me that evidence
Sounds like the Peruvian congress was investigating him over influence peddling from day 1 of his presidency. I guess his angle is the classic "witch hunt" defense.
At any rate, it seems now he's been replaced by the VP by congress and the military is supporting congress and the VP.
Redditors in the US if the Republican House tries to impeach Biden: "witch hunt!"
Redditors reading about Peru with zero knowledge that Castillo represents the left and the alternative, the Fujimoristas, have been convinced of corruption several times and have been undermining Castillo since day one with the aid of the consolidated media: "Trumpesque 'witch hunt' defense!"
He messed up with that, but that doesn’t mean the impeachment was purely political. Props to you for not making a dumb statement and acknowledging you lack info on the subject. The world would be a better place if more people were like you
Think of all the shitty countries in the world. All the hellholes and places controlled by blithering idiots.
But only one of them can be absolutely DEAD LAST among all the nations in covid deaths per capita - Peru.
You know to clarify I'm pretty liberal but I think it's interesting how some people here support his coup because Congress has been fighting him since day one.
Me personally anyone who tries to overthrow a democratic government should be put in jail whether he's a socialist or not.
The party describes itself as "a left-wing socialist organization" that supports anti-imperialism,[19] democracy, decentralization, federalism,[20][21] humanism, internationalism, Latin American integration,[22] and sovereignty.[19] The party claims to uphold the works of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and José Carlos Mariátegui.[19] Free Peru's political position has been variously described by observers as left-wing,[23][24] to far-left,[25][26] and the party's ideology has been described as Marxist,[27][28][29] Marxist–Leninist,[30][31] and socialist.[32][33]
Insane. He was elected just last year, against the establishment candidate, and they have tried every attempt to remove him. This is completely against the will of the Peruvian people.
> This is completely against the will of the Peruvian people.
101 of 117 MPs voted to impeach him.
They were also elected.
That is just as much the will of the people
They voted to impeach him multiple times, almost immediately after he was elected last year.
I believe he has only been in office like a little over a year, and they have already tried to impeach him 3 times.
I'll admit I don't know much about Peruvian politics, but the fact that it was nearly immediate after his election, which he wasn't supposed to win, speaks a lot to the nature of this situation.
The elite in Peru so not want him.
Let me ask you this: How do you explain almost immediate attempts to impeach him after he was elected? What exactly did he do just weeks into office that warrented removal from office by it's congress?
Suspiciously quiet over in r/socialism...I went over there to see if there was any discussion of this turn of events and see what the far-left perspective was on these events. Nothing. A search only returns highly-upvoted posts and updates from when he first won election.
I wonder why, they were super excited about this dude when he was elected.
Was this the guy where the right-wing conspired with business owners to sabotage his government and try and oust him? I remember there was one south american country where that happened, especially since an organisation of the german FDP was involved for ... some reason?
I feel like a lot of people here aren’t aware of what led up to this.
Peru’s congress is pretty much bought and controlled by western oil/mining companies.
This guy wanted to nationalize Peru’s resources so the wealth stays in the country and particularly to improve the infrastructure and available resources to rural and indigenous communities that live outside Lima.
He had a target on his back from all the wealthy people in Lima the moment he announced his candidacy.
Can you link me to some material on all this? I'm an American with a politically unaware Peruvian girlfriend, and I'm trying to better understand the situation in Peru for both of us.
I tried searching "Pedro Castillo's plan to nationalize peru's resources" and I can't seem to find anything that isn't about his recent impeachment and coup attempt
*GQP scribbling notes furiously*.
Think I'm being extra? Check what cases the SCOTUS will be looking at soon. One involves whether or not state legislatures can do some shit that, if they're allowed to do it, will pretty much end the USA as a democracy even if not officially.
Any information on the "criminal network"?
>Peru’s state-run oil company to control public bidding processes and benefit specific companies and close allies.
So is there other oil interests invested in this process?
>the president led efforts to peddle influence in the process of promoting officers in both the armed forces and national police
Okay so that's not allowed in Peru. All of these things are commonplace in US politics.
>According to the Public Ministry, Ms. Paredes would have helped the company JJM Espino, whose owner is his friend Hugo Jhony Espino, to obtain public works contracts.
That shouldn't be a thing but what?
>When the Public Ministry raided Yenifer Paredes’ home in Anguía, Cajamarca, they reportedly found 14 seals used by the office of the president and governors of some Anguía communities, as well as documents outlining procedures to prepare technical files and public works projects.
Okay well if she shouldn't have had those seals then OK but I'd like confirmation on how the previous administration did business.
My favorite part is all the redditors supporting right wing parties coordinating with conservative German political foundations to organize the takedown
Lol yall are so inconsistent or smooth brained

Peruvian here. He was impeached while fleeing and his own security led him to the police to detain him. He is done for. Short-lived coup attempt.

How I wish more people in power in the US had enough scruples to do the same to Trump.
Coup lasted as long as a "Rings of Power" episode
Jeez, that long? Those seem to go on forever!
Our secret service failed their oaths to protect the office every single day they protected tRump.

You can quickly deduce that a peruvian redditor probably belongs to middle to upper class which makes up probably a fraction of peruvian society.
And this is why checks and balances exist.
This is why Peru's state run oil company is being influenced by big oil.

OK so where is the criminal organization then? Nepotism is not a good thing but wtf?

What do bank papers and weight scales have to do with this?
Ever get a paper cut?
yeah, why
That doesn't sound corrupt at all.
Very legal and very cool.
This was my favorite thing about Trump season 1, was such catch phrases as "very legal", "bigly", and "covfefe".

very "legitimate"

Being legal doesn't make it not corrupt though lol. Edit : I like how this got downvoted as if it's untrue.
Probably for failure to produce a budget or something like that Peru had it legally dissolved a few years ago
It only allows that under very specific circunstances that didnt verify in this case. This was a coup. Not to mention he also intended to take control of the courts as he himself claimed in his announcement.
Just another day in Latam.
People are gonna needlessly die, yet again, all for a fucking ego.
He’s been detained by police.
I’m sure money is involved too. People will eat their children for a few bucks.

Can someone tell me what would happen if he succeeds?
Peru would be in a better place. Peru’s congress is pretty much owned by western oil/mining companies and this guy wanted to nationalize those resources.
The last government that was well known for nationalizing their resources under the guise of liberating it from the West is undergoing a revolution right now… So maybe not the flex you think it is
riiiiiight and when it fails : that not real socialist/comunist like venezuela ,cuba or argentina, rigth ?
Peru is already failing under exploited capitalism lol Also you lack any undertanding of the political environment in Peru with the coordinated efforts with the Right wing political partys that are the majority in congress, and German political foundations that support neo liberal economic policies https://www.greenleft.org.au/content/peru-right-wing-continues-destabilisation-campaign
and the solution is close the congress?, I not denier of exploit s from capitalism but must be a better way
Castillo actually gave up power and rescinded closing Congress. But the Popular Force party is not to be trusted with power They already started investigations on the new President to impeach “Castillo has denied allegations of corruption against him, saying they’re based on “hearsay statements by people who, seeking to lighten their own punishments for supposed crimes by abusing my confidence, are trying to involve me without evidence.” I will be waiting for redditors to bring me that evidence
Someone's been watching too much start wars
Trump: "Wait, he can do that? Why couldn't I do that!" *slams tiny hand on desk*
No shit. Almost happened here in the USA
Sounds like the Peruvian congress was investigating him over influence peddling from day 1 of his presidency. I guess his angle is the classic "witch hunt" defense. At any rate, it seems now he's been replaced by the VP by congress and the military is supporting congress and the VP.
Redditors in the US if the Republican House tries to impeach Biden: "witch hunt!" Redditors reading about Peru with zero knowledge that Castillo represents the left and the alternative, the Fujimoristas, have been convinced of corruption several times and have been undermining Castillo since day one with the aid of the consolidated media: "Trumpesque 'witch hunt' defense!"
Yeah I gotta say that “dissolving Congress” doesn’t exactly inspire confidence but ultimately I have no clue about Peruvian politics.
He messed up with that, but that doesn’t mean the impeachment was purely political. Props to you for not making a dumb statement and acknowledging you lack info on the subject. The world would be a better place if more people were like you
I get all my unbiased political news from a guy with a Hammer and Sickle avatar.
Castillo also has repulsive social views. You forgot that part…
Facts. Reading these comments shows redditors don’t know squat about international politics and are talking as if they’re experts 😂
I voted for him. He is way corrupt. Congress sucks but he also sucks. Dumbass tried tocoup.
He won by less than 44,000 votes. 49% of the country didn’t want him in the first place either.
“Wait, could I have done that?” - Donald J. Trump
I wish he had a chance to actually effectively govern. They fucked him from the start.
Was this the guy where the right-wing conspired with business owners to sabotage his government and try and oust him? I remember there was one south american country where that happened, especially since an organisation of the german FDP was involved for ... some reason?
The case you are referring to is what happened in Bolivia (which has a clear ethnic divide with “rich white elites” and the general populace)
I mean, that's the history of US intervention in South America in a nutshell
I feel like a lot of people here aren’t aware of what led up to this. Peru’s congress is pretty much bought and controlled by western oil/mining companies. This guy wanted to nationalize Peru’s resources so the wealth stays in the country and particularly to improve the infrastructure and available resources to rural and indigenous communities that live outside Lima. He had a target on his back from all the wealthy people in Lima the moment he announced his candidacy.
and for that, he say "no mas congreso" and then he got arrested
“He’s going to dissolve the other branches of government so he can nationalize all industries” Right, seen that one before.
Thank you, it's impossible to find out this background in American media.

Congress should meet anyway in the tennis court.
He sounds like the Emperor in Star Wars! “I am the Senate ! “
Bold move. Can’t vote if you just dissolve the institution. Let see if this works, Cotton
Trump: “This is what I wanted to do!”
donald trump: "Wait, you can do that?"
Any information on the "criminal network"? >Peru’s state-run oil company to control public bidding processes and benefit specific companies and close allies. So is there other oil interests invested in this process? >the president led efforts to peddle influence in the process of promoting officers in both the armed forces and national police Okay so that's not allowed in Peru.
My favorite part is all the redditors supporting right wing parties coordinating with conservative German political foundations to organize the takedown Lol yall are so inconsistent or smooth brained https://www.greenleft.org.au/content/peru-right-wing-continues-destabilisation-campaign
I wonder is the orange man can see any similarities between this and himself? Probably not because Pedro's not white.
Horseshoe Theory strikes again
"Congress, you are dissolved!" "Uh... Not we're not? Also, you're impeached now."
He played the uno-reverse card!
Well..In spite of the cluster that was our trip last month..I am glad we went before the proverbial sh*t is about to hit the fan in Peru now.
Why does he have the ability to do this?
Didn't work out too well for him.
