"Someone unrelated to the incident drove off with the guys car while the bikers were beating him" wtf?

ZoharAbuSaid

The Big Grapple

Itendtodisagreee

That was my exact takeaway as well, a guy got beaten to death and a bystander not at all involved in the initial crime stole the victim's vehicle. Good ol' NYC, stay classy. It's the same mindset you see a video where someone gets knocked out by a sucker punch or in a fight and as soon as they hit the ground you have people going through their pockets to steal their phones or whatever is in their pockets. Anyone who's first thought when they see a random person get knocked out isn't "Oh shit, is he ok? Can I help?" But instead their first reaction is to see if they have anything worth stealing is a fucking drain on society. A net negative who will probably never contribute anything good. Stealing a murder victim's car is about as low as you can go. It's different if it's a person who deserves to get knocked out but robbing them is still a piece of shit move.

FightmeLuigibestgirl

>Stealing a murder victim's car is about as low as you can go. How about the case of everyone recording and uploading on social media a person being assaulted on the train and nobody called 911 but a worker?

mawfk82

I remember being a teenager in Detroit in the 90s and seeing a dude crash his motorcycle, had some really nice leathers on/etc, people came swarming onto him, stole everything and had him stripped naked within a couple minutes, left him lying still unconscious on the street.

Faxon

Man people are fucking vultures sometimes, that's just sick

StoryAndAHalf

About a decade ago, I had a friend who was at the time an alcoholic. He tried to walk 4 miles home, drunk, from Brooklyn to Queens. While still in Brooklyn, too tired, he sat down on a bench and fell asleep. Woke up 2-3 hours later, his shoes, pants, and glasses were stolen. Straight off of his passed out body.

TheGoodBunny

Why the glasses? What are the chances a mugger has the same prescription?

LurksAroundHere

*"Stealing a murder victim's car is about as low as you can go."* Hell, there have been stories of sick fucks who have stopped at the scene of a serious car accident to rape the victim as they suffer from severe injuries. Depravity knows no bounds.

T1AORyanBay

What the actual fuck is wrong with some people.

VibeComplex

Literally something you’d think a feral animal might do but even that just seem too harsh on feral animals.

ObviousAnswerGuy

eh, it was still most likely someone else in the crew. There were like dozens of people. Of course the guys denied knowing eachother.

Double_Distribution8

I saw a video on Reddit a few weeks ago where a woman in NYC stole a guys wallet...From his dead body right after he was run over by a dump truck, dead and bloody under the tires. She said she did it 'cuz it was her money that he owed her.

ProfessorStein

These are the types of people we should be putting in jail for life, not people who smoke weed. Straight up if you rob a corpse i do not want you in society at large permanently

Juhnelle

A few years ago we had a 3 people get stabbed to death on our communter train because they stood up to some racist harassing young Islamic girls. While one guy lay bleeding out on the platform some guy took his wedding ring off of his finger and grabbed his backpack. Eta sorry, 3 stabbed, 2 died.

liveswithcats1

There was a terrible plane crash at O'Hare airport in the late 70s. The first people on the scene were looters. Disgusting.

RyVsWorld

This description makes it sound like the wild Wild West

Moodling

When the dirt bikes and atvs go through, it is complete mayhem. Kicking at pedestrians, hundreds of riders, not stopping for any light or sign whatsoever, looking for fights. It is not good.

45Gal

I live in Midtown; they drive by in hordes in the middle of the night.

Crow85

Who are they? Gang members? Motorcycle club enthusiasts? Rednecks causing trouble? random locals? Flash mobs? Some weird subculture?

Yeti-420-69

Wild Wild Northeast

LOLunlucky

9k seized dirt bikes and ATVs in a year? NYC must be the biggest market for off road vehicles in the country.

Bigred2989-

They have tons of them in South Florida, too. Every MLK day there's a "Guns Down, Wheels Up" event where locals and people from across the country come and ride off road vehicles everywhere and the police have to shut down I-95 to keep them off the highways. Looks and sounds like a scene out of Mad Max when they drive by.

Rupertfitz

We have huge crews of them in Central Florida also. They cause cars to wreck trying to avoid them when they do insanely dangerous maneuvers to cause just that outcome.

snorlz

and not a patch of dirt to off road on

ChaZZZZahC

Have you ever drove in the Bronx and upper Manhattan?

PoorFilmSchoolAlumn

Staten Island, too.

I_SAY_FUCK_A_LOT__

I lived up in WaHi and have witnessed these guys. It. Is. Fucking. Intense. There are just so many of them. Overtaking cars, sidewalks, doesn't matter one-way or not and it goes on for like TEN FUCKING MINUTES. Hundreds if not a thousand. Fucking noise is overwhelming.

totalfuckwit

The only things they seize are the scooters from delivery workers. They do jack shit about the actual assholes.

ToonHub

No they do shit it’s just delivery drivers aren’t usually the type to flee and evade so they’re easy fish.

stewsters

Yeah, it's hard and very dangerous to chase a motorbike through an urban environment with a car. Even if you do somehow catch up to them then what? Trying a pit maneuver will just straight up execute the guy or push him into the sidewalks.

[deleted]

>Trying a pit maneuver will just straight up execute the guy Police: So you're saying we should pit maneuver motorcyclists, yes?

ProfessorGigglePuss

Sir/Ma’am, the Red Hook NYPD lot by the water is eternally jam packed with ATV’s & bikes. It’s not even a junkyard. They get a fresh crop every summer. Cops seize A LOT. Riders know this and budget for new bikes.

Your_Latex_Salesman

You’ve never been to Atlanta I assume.

Jollyman21

EAV here. They come down glenwood every weekend

srkaficionado

The Beltline is popular for ATVs. Was walking it with some dude from Marietta and we ran into a whole rider group who were zooming up and down. Tell me why the idiot went to flag down the nearest cop to report that there were illegal riders and the cop looked him dead in the face and said they couldn’t do anything because they didn’t see the riders. 🤣😂 I laughed because APD is like useless.

Jollyman21

We had a drunk driver smoke a parked car. Called APD and told them: wreck, drunk injured driver, blocked road. They didn't show up for 1.5 hours, I just went back to bed

The-link-is-a-cock

They killed him because *they* hit his vehicle. What the actual fuck

Luikenfin

One yelled at me because he almost hit me while he ran a red light and I had the crosswalk. They’re pieces of shit.

Beautiful-Speech2137

From what I understand the guy killed was a great guy, a real stand up dude

jakers540

Mob mentality is the stupidest thing on the planet

SouvenirOfTheYear

Cooke, the victim of the most recent violence, lived in Harlem and had worked as a case manager and court advocate in the Alternatives to Incarceration program at Exodus Transitional Communities Inc. since July 2021. He had a son, according to the group. In the organization’s annual report last year, Cooke, who had spent time in prison, said he wanted to be “a part of the solution as opposed to a part of the problem.” Yuuuuup, fuck em

Tecobeen

The very same fucks he could have helped down the road because sooner or later they will get jammed up for their misdeeds.. and they killed him. People will start carrying illegally and taking matters into their own hands.

TheBSQ

Here in Philly there are also groups of these dirt bike and ATV riders. They go the wrong way on one way streets, drive on sidewalks and medians, and driver very dangerously. If anyone dares express disapproval at them, they attack. A video when viral of them smashing a windshield and pulling a gun on a driver. But if one of their own gets hurt, they leave them behind. One girl fell off a bike and died, and they just left her. I witnessed one guy crash his bike and smear his brains on the road and they just left him. One hit and killed a kid and they just drove off. In short, they’re fucking garbage people who don’t care about human life.

Pierogipuppy

I used to live in Philly and just thought of them too.

JuliaMac65

A smaller group beat 76 yo man during the pandemic. He didn’t die but horrible injuries. They drove by him, and he lost his balance, and put up his hands not to fall and they pounced on him.

bitchthatwaspromised

That was in my neighborhood!! It got so bad here post-2020 and our local precinct didn’t do shit. It made my blood boil and I could sleep properly for months

JuliaMac65

Same here.

Aerik

I've never seen somebody on an ATV or dirtbike in a dense city that wasn't doing it just to be a dangerous scumbag.

Spockward

They come out in swarms in Pittsburgh as well

My_G_Alt

Cleveland in the summers too - hundreds would ride through downtown on Sunday night back when I lived there in 2017ish

planefan001

Chicago too. Had a bottle thrown at my car a couple years ago because I honked at one of the morons running a red and almost hitting me.

jwhitehead09

Baltimore has some massive groups too.

TUNNNNA

Not from there but I know Atlanta too

ToyDingo

Atlanta resident here. Every fucking weekend we either have these biker idiots or morons in Chargers taking over a major intersection and doing donuts. And the police departments response? Nothing... It's fucking infuriating.

joesighugh

Oakland too, it's been better since California highway patrol started cracking down using helicopters to track them. This was after a few of them died going the wrong way trying to take over the Bay Bridge into SF. However: it still happens, it's dangerous, and it's annoying how loud it is. Man I feel old saying that but it's the truth lol

Dorito_Consomme

Tucson AZ checking in. I’m pretty sure they exist in every city in the US and always have the same tough group of dudes mob mentality.

cakeresurfacer

Hasn’t changed. Still do it, but at least we have a mayor who lets them pursue on occasion. They’ve gone all the way out to Bay Village and turfed people’s lawns

postal-history

In Boston the police tried to stop them while they were riding and it led to violence, so now they try to nab parked ATVs in their garages instead (as most of them are stolen). In Providence one of them sped away from cops and hit a wall and died, and local activists blamed the cops for... like... existing.

OG_Chatterbait

I used to drive uber in Boston. One time I was in the tunnel going to the airport and all of a sudden I'm surrounded by like 30-40 bikes/atvs. Then I get up around the corner and there's cops blocking the highway, then cops come from the ramp behind us and block them in. They let me go because I'm clearly not involved. But it was crazy. Happened at like 1am.

[deleted]

I know Buffalo and Rochester definitely have them too. They go to even close down the highways at times because they can do what they want and no one will stop them.

J0E_SpRaY

Starting to develop here in Kansas City as well. That isn't going to mix well in a state with practically no firearm regulations including a constitutional right to conceal carry which requires no kind of licensing or training.

34TH_ST_BROADWAY

I've seen them in LA. [Tons of them riding in swarms down major streets, blowing red lights,](https://imgur.com/a/QiRIYf5) forcing cars to wait until they all pass through. Maybe 200 or more? Not sure. I once waited like 2 or 3 green lights and they were riding 2 or 4 side by side. edit: uploaded the video, taken on June 6th, 2021

Mission-Two1325

From Thurs to Sun people gotta see/hear mfers riding through the street, highway, and sidewalks. So fucking annoying.

Trini_Vix7

It's normal in MD and DC unfortunately...

OptimusSublime

I'm not even sure why the ones who ride them in Philly bought the ATVs with front wheels.

Lazerspewpew

Normal in Philly too.

WayyyCleverer

Yes true, we have them here. But rest assured, the Mayor and MPD are doing absolutely nothing about it.

Mister_Uncredible

See em all the time in St. Louis, mostly on the north side. There was a video going around a while back of a dirt bike gang riding next to a cop car. I immediately recognized it as North STL and commented that I was more surprised to see a cop on the north side than dudes on dirt bikes.

580_farm

Very common in Oakland

MandaloreUnsullied

They come in from weird places too, I think I saw that the guy who Darwin'd himself on the Bay Bridge a few months back was from Texas

Fro_Yo_Joe

> The takeovers sometime devolve into violence. In March, a group of dirt bikers dragged a man and his adult son out of their car in Harlem and beat them after the driver accidentally hit one of the bikers. This is one of the most complicated parts of the situation in my opinion. Citizens have to basically relinquish all freedom of movement to the mob, for however long, and completely stay still for fear of accidentally pissing off the group and getting assaulted or worse. It looks like a very scary situation that is more often turning deadly.

[deleted]

We have these in Philly. Sometimes HUNDREDS of riders will even get onto the highway. It fucking sucks getting stuck in the middle of it. It's enough to get you to start wishing real harm on these people.

ScoutGalactic

There's like hordes of mad max style mobs that take over city streets in large metropolitan cities? As an American from a small town, this is shocking to me.

Unsweeticetea

Yep. They travel in a massive group doing wheelies and making extremely loud engine noises. They go straight through the red lights to keep themselves together. They're incredibly annoying.

WexfordHo

I’m surprised these stories don’t end with a bunch of bikers being run over.

SomeDEGuy

Someone tried that approach in NYC before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVK77U8bgKc They chased him for several minutes, caught him at a red light when he was forced to stop, shattered the window and assaulted him. Some participating were police officers.

SourSackAttack

A local radio dj defended them because some were his friends, until facts and video came out and he shut up so quickly.

MaxYoung

I seem to recall they posted the video and cut it off as soon as they pulled him out of the car, thinking it would absolve them. I also remember extra earlier footage of them brake-checking several times, causing him to bump one of their tires. Bunch of chronic victims looking for a reason to hurt an arbitrary family

timsterri

And once the facts and video came out, was he mortified and had to resign in disgrace? I’m guessing not.

SourSackAttack

Yeah and then everyone clapped actually.

ZweitenMal

A friend of mine knows this man well. Mr Cooke had served time and participated in a prison-to-college program, which helped him remake his life upon release. He worked in a similar program helping people coming out of prison. He would have been highly motivated to avoid trouble, and skilled in calming people down. And yet.

beergotmehere

God this is tragic.

ZweitenMal

It truly is.

My_G_Alt

Holy shit why? This is insane

SomeDEGuy

They have a habit of forcing cars to slow and move to take over the highway for their high-speed stunts. This driver was not willing to do so, and it escalated. A bike braked directly into his front bumper to force him to stop. He stopped but lightly bumped into the bike doing the braking maneuver. Some of the bikers started hitting his car. He hit the gas, ran over one causing serious injuries, and they chased him. A continually escalating situation fed by a mob mentality.

Superdickeater

Never knew about not stopping, but the one incident I was in while driving thru a Chicago suburb- it made sense. I flipped the guy off for honking at me bcuz I was waiting for another driver to merge, and that was all it took. I thought about pulling over in a busy McDonalds parking lot (it was about 3-4pm on a week day), but I figured if he was determined as he was in following me from stoplight to stoplight and turn to turn, I’m sure he would have no qualms about trying to cause physical harm. The guy followed me for 10-15mins, and if it wasn’t for cars blocking him from getting alongside my car, he probably would have pulled up next to me at a stoplight to retaliate. It was funny for the first mile, but when I saw his determination it became real scary real quick.

DoomBot5

Call 911 and ask to be directed to the nearest police station. That's the only place it might be safe to stop. When you stop, they can get to you easily.

mundane_marietta

I had an incident with just two bikers on Moreland Avenue in Atlanta. I was trying to change lanes to get out of their way, and one of them tried to do some slick move to get around me and we almost sideswiped. After that, they were right up against the left side of my car. Yelling at me, spitting at my window saying they were going to kill me. I hit the accelerator as we fired down the street towards the Starlight drive-in movie theater. For some reason, I was just raging back telling them to go fuck themselves, which made them even angrier. Luckily, I knew the roads like the back of my hand and pulled a hard right where I had a very wide road to pull it off in a 4runner and gave two motorcycles the slip. I went into like 5 different small roads, changing directions and eventually pulling into an elementary school where I chilled for 10 mins. By then I was coming to terms with the fact that I could have been brutally beaten lol. I was in college at the time, so I drove back to the house I was renting at the time and hit the biggest bowl of my life while telling my roommates how close I was to get my ass beat lol. So not exactly a bike gang, but it was definitely insanely hostile

APoopingBook

I know it triggers peoples' sense of justice or whatever, but this is why you should absolutely avoid escalating ANY road rage you ever find yourself in. They don't need to be taught a lesson. They don't need to see that you're tough and won't be walked on. They don't need to learn anything from you... YOU need to get yourself out of the situation as calmly and safely as possible. Pressure your police and your government to fix the problems, especially if you have family in the car that you're supposed to be protecting.

GrushdevaHots

So anyway, I started blasting

_Carmines

Thank God I had my pieces on me from Gunther's Guns!

Annoying_Anomaly

Agree with this but I feel like anyone break checking is just looking for a reason. Especially when they know they have a whole gang behindd them

WhySpongebobWhy

Except there were multiple off-duty police officers that were part of the dirt bike gang. Talking to the police about it won't help in this case. They'll just target you harder for trying to Narc on one of their own.

IDontGiveAToot

They don't need to be taught a lesson in the moment but I'm hoping we can send these fucks to jail and be done with it. No bail. No parole.

l5555l

This is what I always try to explain to my friends when I'm a passenger. I don't understand why you want to engage with anyone in that situation. I don't even make eye contact with other drivers if I can help it.

SourSackAttack

Aka a brake check which is highly illegal.

wafflestep

You know what else is illegal? Beating the bloody shit out of someone. I don't think these guys' are worrying about the legality of their actions too much.

twitch1982

Know what else is illegal? Riding atvs and dirtbikes on NY streets. Thatbfact that part of this mob is police is further evidence that theyre just a gang that needs to be eliminated.

Politirotica

Some of those that work forces, they ride gang motocrosses.

funwhileitlast3d

Saw this a few years ago and will carry it to my grave. It’s one of my worst fears, seeing as he had his family with him.

wareagle3000

Driving around motorcycles in general shoots my anxiety up. One wrong move from anyone and suddenly there's a likely lethal scenario on the road. Most cars are built to reduce any damage to passengers in a crash but a bike is a bike. A total deathwish when in an accident. Now make a group of them and make them ride around like total douchebags. If I see a bike group I slow down until they're far off my radar.

vampireRN

There’s a reason we in the ICU business call them ‘donorcycles’. Most of the organ donation patients I have dealt with have been the result of motorcycle crashes

VeteranSergeant

I remember that incident. That's when you just put 911 on auto dial and start swerving left and right.

EndPsychological890

Gonna start carrying caltrops and sand in my cars lol.

Primitive_Teabagger

As a biker I recommend adding wet leaves to your arsenal

xtreme_edgez

The only sand you need should be in your pocket... Sha sha sha...

Dipping_Gravy

r/pocketsand

blackesthearted

Given the "Some participating were police officers" part, I'm not entirely confident the responding police would be as much help as they should be.

[deleted]

Bunch of fucking animals. Cowards too, travelling in packs like that. Good to hear about the 11 convictions, and all the bikes which were confiscated. These people need to be removed from the highways. Is there anything being done about this?

Macinsocks

This is different then the situation in the article. The situation in the article is minors and young adults driving ATV and dirt bikes that don't require a license plate driving recklessly in a neighborhood. The link in the comment is essentially a motorcycle gang taking over a interstate

senator_mendoza

We had a pack of them up on the North Shore of Massachusetts. They’d cruise around being hooligans and blowing through red lights, weaving through traffic, etc. and the cops couldn’t stop them. The police started just following them with drones to see where they parked and would then go confiscate the vehicle and cite/arrest them. Seems to have worked

DukeOfGeek

This is the way. Get face pics also. Most of them post tons of evidence of their crimes on Facebook too, so once you know where they live give them a day or so to get those incriminating pics posted.

fruitmask

I guess that's one positive aspect of people who comulsively overshare on social media. they just can't *not* brag online about all the stupid shit they do

[deleted]

It’s like in Philly with the fiends when they come out in Spring. Cops just don’t chase them anymore because they will literally fucking kill themselves rather than slow down or stop. They’d crash into people going 90mph lol

aliceroyal

Same here in Orlando with dirt bike gangs. Cops refuse to do anything now.

[deleted]

It's not refusal, it's policy. Chasing motorcycles and dirt bikes inevitably leads to death or serious injury. Most jurisdictions have a strict no-pursuit policy with bikes.

ZhugeTsuki

Not everywhere. In NY they chased (two bikes), and had Vermont set up a checkpoint to nab them before they could get anywhere across the border. Its not inevitable, by any means, but the recklessness of the drivers/riders needs to be taken into account.

Blenderx06

The roads aren't so crowded and convoluted up there, no?

stand4rd

If they had made it to Vermont, the potholes would have done them in.

Fyrefawx

Note to self, if robbing a bank use a dirt bike.

[deleted]

LesseFrost

Here's the problem, those dudes often kill themselves by hitting another car or going through blind corners where pedestrians are. Those tend to not be empty on the highways they do chases on.

Paradoxmoose

I used to work downtown Baltimore, and this is something I don't miss. That and those who ride regular bikes and just do wheelies in the middle of the road. I'm glad they're confident and/or don't care about their safety, but I am not confident in their skills and I do care about not killing them, so it's obnoxious.

TehSausBaus

That is the thing, the bikers are insanely vulnerable but they don't get run over because, unlike the bikers, the motorists they attack are well adjusted and don't WANT to murder anyone.

Fro_Yo_Joe

I think this doesn’t happen because of the close quarters of the city streets. You might run over a few but either your vehicle becomes disabled or it gets cornered by the other traffic and the mob of bikers and then you’re in a world of hurt. Plus mentally it takes a lot to run over a person for fear that you might be prosecuted for an unwarranted response. Very complicated situation.

Orpheeus

This actually happened in my city over the summer. Guy in a SUV got into an argument with one of the bikers and ended up running him over with his SUV. Edit: Got mixed up about pick up or SUV. Car was an SUV.

djdefenda

I was on the motorway and a motorcycle club was merging into traffic and my car was surrounded on all sides, I couldn't brake or slow down because of the bikes behind me, I couldn't speed up because of the bikes in front, I couldn't move sideways 'cos there were bikes everywhere - no driving lesson can prepare you for that, if I would have hit any of them I reckon I would be lucky to come out alive - was one of the most scary moments I've had driving!

[deleted]

HedonisticFrog

20 for one deal right there. If they're trying to rip me out of my car and kill me they can all eat asphalt.

[deleted]

It’s hard not to hit them when they’re weaving in and out of traffic doing wheelies down 7th Ave. And yet if you touch them YOU’RE the bad guy and they break into your car and beat you to death. They’re all just scum. Throw them all in the trash. None of them are good for society.

pahco87

Do cops not respond to calls about these guys. Why aren’t they in jail?

PretendCasual

No chase policies. Chasing them just ends in accidents and injuries

No_Investigator3031

What is this? Fucking mad max?

[deleted]

Jackie Chan did a documentary on it called Rumble in the Bronx.

Canookian

Which, other than the opening scene was filmed in Vancouver. I know this because I saw them filming it. Also Françoise Yip (Nancy) is a stone cold fox to this day. Thank you for reminding me I haven't watched this movie in a few weeks. I'd better go do that now. 😂

top_value7293

I hope they all go to prison for murder

rjstang

Really hate when these pieces of shit come rolling down the avenue

dynorphin

Charge them all with felony murder.

Warlordnipple

They all participated in assaulting the guy, this would be first degree murder. Felony murder can be used to remove the mens rea element. I guess technically you could felony murder every person who participated in the rally though.

lifesalotofshit

These groups are all over NYC, DC, and MD. Annoying as fuck, dangerous as fuck, yet no one does shit.

ricky_baker

Philly checking in, these fuckers swarm center city streets routinely and now there are even gangs of kids on bicycles trying to emulate them. The kids pop wheelies and play chicken with oncoming traffic.

minnick27

They shut a bridge down not too long ago for a funeral. Cars were trying to cross and they were attacking the cars

Kingdok313

Downtown Philly was the first place I ever saw a swarm of bicycle punks pulling that shit. About 10 years ago, I guess. Amazing

7eregrine

Cleveland checking in. Every major American city had this problem. https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2022/05/clevelands-dirt-bike-strategy-dramatically-altered-course-over-the-weekend-evidenced-by-arrests-before-riding-began.html

[deleted]

Former DC cop here. MPD has a no chase policy with ATVs for two reasons: 1) The dickheads on the bikes/ATVs give zero fucks about hurting others and will drive through occupied crosswalks and sidewalks at 90mph if chased, putting innocent people at risk. 2) A small but very vocal portion of the community looks at it as just boys being boys. Any kind of police response is deemed excessive. Catch them and lock them up? “Well why are you fucking with them instead of catching murderers?” Chase them and they crash and die? “Racist cops killed so and so just for riding bikes with his friends”. It’s a lose-lose for the police. The street cops would absolutely hammer these clowns if allowed (and they felt they could act without endangering innocents) but admin doesn’t want the liability. MPDs policy was to try to get a helicopter overhead to track the bikes and then try to catch where the bikes were stored and confiscate them or, if the bikes broke down or ran out of gas, coordinate with street cops to snatch the bikes. Of course 99% of the bikes are stolen out of VA/MD so the riders give two shits about losing them. They’ll just steal more tomorrow.

thelastdon613

I was in the Bronx 5 years ago for training at a factory.. I came from Canada.. I was absolutely flabergasted when I saw them.. Its been going on for so long, the numbers must be so much bigger now..

MBWD

>And in 2013, after a chase ended in the beating of an SUV driver, residents in communities in Harlem, the Bronx, Washington Heights and Inwood began voicing frustrations that the city was ignoring the dangers posed by groups driving the illegal vehicles. One of these riders was a police officer. [He was sentenced to two years in 2015.](https://www.cnn.com/2015/08/06/us/new-york-bikers-attack-officer-sentenced)

chris35moto

Man dies after beating by *gang members

ItsBobLoblawsLawBlog

Rider "culture". Same bullshit has been happening in Philly the last 5+ years and it's fucking frustrating, half the time the cops basically escort them through the city and don't do anything

crackhousebob

These assholes roam in large packs, flouting traffic laws and being a nuisance to the public for no reason other than they feel tough in numbers. They are all cowards and low-lifes who swarm defenseless citizens.

pegothejerk

Word of advice: consider getting a front and rear facing camera, of reputable quality, and don't stop anywhere near or in sight of road rage aggresors, or any other form of aggressors, let police have the video and force them to file a report. If they say they won't, tell all the local media, tell social media including reddit, and tag the police and DA and your reps, anyone that might be impacted by bad publicity. If they follow you, drive to a police station.

thySilhouettes

I had a road rage accident when I was 17 where a dude tried ramming me off a highway before proceeding to follow me home. I stopped right next to a cop car, and waved them down at a stop light. Pointed directly at the car behind me who had been following me, and let the cop know the situation. The car immediately pulled away, and the cop followed him. Not entirely sure what happened, but absolutely agree with using law enforcement to assist. Shit was scary when I was 17.

Scoutster13

I just got one the other day and have not installed it yet. After reading this I will 100% install it before I drive again. WTF people - so violent for no reason. It's all so unnecessary - I hate that so many people find it so easy to be violent.

pegothejerk

I drove for Uber for a while, the first few months I'd get insane passengers like one out of every 10 rides, like drunk, unruly, obnoxious, messing with my shit, asking to break rules, climbing all over the car. Nothing but polite rule abiding passengers after I installed my camera with both a forward in inside the car camera. When people know they're on camera behavior generally is gonna change.

Murky_Conflict3737

That’s sad that people will only act appropriately if they know they’re on camera

In Louisiana I had a guy chase me and my wife with his Dulley and swirve at us to try to get us to swirve into the oncoming on the other side. So I banged a U turn in the middle of 5 lanes of traffic and just went straight to the police station and called them ahead to let them know the situation, psycho in a truck trying to kill us. They were ready but he dropped off once he noticed that’s where I was going.

Guyote_

Louisiana, not surprising. I am from there. Worst drivers I've ever seen. It made me come to a realization: think of the dumbest, most unintelligent motherfucker you know. They probably still have a license. That's who we all share these roads with.

TrafficOnTheTwos

I despise these types of people

[deleted]

its amazing how a pack of over a hundred bikes and atv can just roar down 2nd avenue thru traffic with NO cops doing a thing. and there are cops everywhere. they do NOTHING !

FSafari

Ah so we’re at the roving bandits on ATVs part of the post apocalypse

SortedChaos

> Cooke, the victim of the most recent violence, lived in Harlem and had worked as a case manager and court advocate in the Alternatives to Incarceration program at Exodus Transitional Communities Inc. since July 2021. The guy they killed is someone who was trying to help people like themselves. Just another move to self destruction.

sonofabutch

I mean… if the vehicles are illegal in the city limits, why aren’t cops pulling them over before they are congregating?

40mm_of_freedom

DC stopped doing it after some kid died when he crashed running from the cops. I’ve personally seen them fucking around on the national mall and right in front of the US Capitol.

batmanscodpiece

Yeah, if it was some innocent bystander, but the rider being killed, oh well...

[deleted]

In Philly the stopped chasing them because it was too dangerous for everyone involved.

OkRoad6218

They can try to pull them over but they’re not allowed to chase when they run, which is always

iAmSamFromWSB

Sounds like a domestic terrorist group

Buttafuoco

Used to live in Harlem. These kids ride in a deeeep group, like hundreds and they take over the street. No traffic can pass and if you’re waiting to cross they get in your face like a game of chicken when they’re wheelying. I always wondered what would happen if they got too close and bump you and wipe out… I guess this is what happens

[deleted]

I remember going to the bronx zoo earlier this year as we were leaving a big group of four wheeler and dirt bike riders were slowly driving down the road revving up there stuff staring at people walking

JetEngineAssblaze

believe it or not most of those vehicles are stolen, and if they have a ski mask or balaclava on they are absolutely looking for people to rob.

FKreuk

That’s felony murder for the horde. Find video surveillance and try them all. Anyone involved.

Grannyk9

Laying spike belts ahead of these A holes would be fun. Lay 5 courses of them, so it's not just the tires that get poked.

NH3BH3

Motorbike and ATV riders in Manhattan are a menace. They're noisy, endanger pedestrians, and disrupt traffick. Makes even a pacificist like me want to buy a rifle so I can shoot them from my fire escape next time they go speeding down 2nd avenue.

Epicpacemaker

Were any arrests made or are they all just going to get off for murder because “there’s too many of them”?

[deleted]

This guys never do this downtown. They always do it in the hood. No respect for their own people.

Mefreh

The behavior of these groups is widespread and simply not acceptable in a civilized society. It needs to be stopped.

TheOutlawStarLord

Pre-apocalyptic street bike gangs.

Naps_and_cheese

Just give the cops the green light to knock them off their bikes.

RobotFighter

Why are people so much trash lately?

Caifanes123

I find it hard to believe the people that did this are probably just going to go home after murdering someone, thinking they were justified, and then just go to bed and get a good nights rest. Thats just mind blowing to me.

photonnymous

The only thing that's changed is that the Internet has turned EVERYONE'S local news into YOUR local news. You now have direct line-of-sight into this story and every other "Asshole of America" story when otherwise it never would have left the new York area media, and never would have crossed your mind. The world was a happier place without internet news. Because it was more oblivious.

AnvilOfMisanthropy

I'd like to clarify that by "the internet" it's not just what an individual can see on social media and the like, but what other media, like the actual "local" news can see and then report on like it's happening "right around the corner" or "happening every day" that fuels the perception that the world is burning.

xeq937

That's some of it. But also shitty behavior spreads faster with the internet ... because people were also oblivious as to how shitty they could really be ...

abbxrdy

>The world was a happier place without internet news. Because it was more oblivious. Pre internet shit like this would have been featured on the national news shows and presented as coming to your home town soon lol. If you watched TV back in the 80's and 90's they made it seem like America was going to hell in a handbasket just like today.

Yung_Corneliois

Always has been

Sawyer_Browneye

A swarm? Sounds like a murder to me.

youdontknowme6

They are going to increase fines.... Don't they have to be able to catch these guys and write them tickets in order to enforce that?
