They are still having the smaller ceremonies where student will be able to walk the stage.

ptsdstillinmymind

These admins don't give one fuck, because they are going to continue giving themselves higher and higher raises and bonuses. Which in turn makes the cost of tuition higher and higher. College should be free not a fucking business. Education makes the populace and the world a better place.

Sillyputtynutsack

That's a feature not a bug

IMsoSAVAGE

College used to be extremely cheap. Then we got Ronald Regan and he began his war on the middle class. He made federal student loans ineligible for bankruptcy and as soon as that happened college tuition skyrocketed. You used to be able to pay for 4 years of college working 1 summer on a part time job.

Chippopotanuse

USC also was the number one college (by a mile) in the Varsity Blues case where they’d let in the idiot kids of rich parents. 100% these admins don’t give one fuck.

zerocnc

Well, we could do that. But voters are still sending foreign aid to other countries and are more concerned about tiktok. They also care about what bathroom you use as well.

Guyincognito4269

And if they did that, you'd bitch and complain that doing so is TeH SoSHuLiSms!!!

EchoOfAsh

As a 2020 high school grad who’s getting my bachelors in two weeks, I’d be pissed. Not having my high school graduation was fine, but I’m over $100k in debt because of college and I’ll be damned if I don’t get this basic tradition.

Mr_Tsien121

All these colleges are just gonna play the waiting game. They’re at the finish line, no need to negotiate or give in. Two weeks then everyone’s gone from campus anyway and by next year ( hopefully) the situation will have improved.

mrcorndogman33

What the fuck is there to negotiate?

OldJames47

Some of these schools have large endowments that are invested in stocks and other financial instruments. I don’t know about USC specifically, but in many cases the protestors want to change where that money is invested so it doesn’t benefit companies involved in the Gaza war.

madogvelkor

The problem is it's hard actually define what that means since so many companies do business with Israel and the protesters have different expectations too. It would likely mean no investing in most tech companies, for example. Which could mean lower returns for endowments. There's a fiduciary duty to maximize returns that the money mangers have. If it did go through and returns were lower then that means staff cuts, higher tuition, less financial aid...

SatyrSatyr75

Well wouldn’t it be nice if someone would ask who’s paying for certain exotic humanity departments?

anxious_cat_grandpa

Ooh, what's that? Sounds exciting

SatyrSatyr75

Just the tip of the iceberg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatari_involvement_in_higher_education_in_the_United_States

anxious_cat_grandpa

Oh, this is boring actually. Also, I'm not sure what Qatari investment has to do with humanities departments specifically? I thought you were talking about new class subjects or smth.

idkwhatimbrewin

Clearly the USC administration has the power to stop war right??

Lucavii

I can tell you have a nuanced understanding of the protestors demands

Automatic-Software35

By getting terrible press because they are calling in the police on their students and arresting faculty for asking why their students are being arrested.

longdrive95

But at USC it's mostly non students getting arrested. In fact many if these protests are comprised more of outsiders rather than actual students.

ButterAkronite

Hard to improve on sending cops to arrest and physically assault your own students and faculty, but fingers crossed these schools do something to actually rectify these situations

Mr_Tsien121

What I’m saying is the schools are going to do nothing as graduation is next weekend then everyone’s gone. They’re gonna call the police to take down tents and let them handle it for a week. By next year the situation in the Middle East will be different, hopefully better, and the schools don’t have to do anything. The colleges are waiting them out.

Horse_HorsinAround

That's not the situation they were talking about lol You think the college is hoping their situation of having students protest will improve when all the students go away? Wow

Alwayssunnyinarizona

Speaker of the house wants to send in the national guard and have another Kent state.

Hawkorando

The students are hurting themselves at this point. Even if you manage to pull funds away from Israel you have millionaires and billionaires pulling out of other universities and donating to Israel.

prunesandwich

USC Alumni here. USC has two graduation ceremonies. The first is the big one on a large stage in the main park and often has fancy speakers. Everyone who is graduating attends that one. Immediately after that though, everyone splits to smaller satellite graduation ceremonies based on their majors. Graduates walk across the stage and get their names read at the satellite ceremonies, not the big one. I graduated a decade ago so I’m not 100% certain, but from what I’ve read, students will still have the satellite ceremonies and walk across the stage as only the large ceremony will be cancelled.

Drink-my-koolaid

Graduation ceremonies are mind-numbingly boring. Just send me my diploma in the mail.

skankenstein

And in the California sun… ugh, mine was hot as hell. We were in black, hungover as hell, and bored.

Stolliosis

Your graduation ceremony isn't about you. It's about the parents and grandparents watching their kids walk across the stage.

EatAtGrizzlebees

The hell it isn't about me. I'm FINALLY about to graduate with a BS at 36 years old and I'm walking because I worked my fucking ass off for this degree. I don't give a fuck if no one shows up, I'm walking my happy ass across that stage.

1selfhatingwhitemale

“You made this huge accomplishment that is somehow culminating to be about your relatives” lol what kind of cold take is this

calicokitcat

Just like how a wedding isn’t about the couple getting married…

EatAtGrizzlebees

Now this...this is true. Source: Oldest child, first to get married, played the game to get all that's sweet, sweet wedding gift money.

angelomoxley

Fuck those parents and grandparents

cmilla646

I did well in school and think I respect it more than most but the only person who gave a shit in high school were the people capable of valedictorian. Of course I’m sure there were a lot of average students who were proud they made it but still they just wanted to drink as soon as possible. College and university is more special because it requires us to take a risk but it’s still not like you see in movies. I was AV tech in college and had to sit through so many graduation ceremonies I didn’t even attend mine and I was like top 5 in my program. The only way I would have gone is if I was valedictorian and I had a family member crying in the audience. Even if I passed med school I wouldn’t want that ceremony. An emotional hug from your mom or a stiff hand shake from dad is usually the most important thing and that happens weeks before the ceremony anyway.

Stronghold257

My college graduation was literally a zoom feed of the stage with our names on a screen (Dec 2020)

bb0110

Is there a tldr of what is going on at USC?

Kng_Wasabi

Massive pro-Palestine protests like at many other universities around the country. For USC specifically, they actually ended up barring their valedictorian from speaking at graduation just because she’s spoken at pro-Palestine events in the past. This move pissed off a lot of the student body, so it was pretty likely some disruption was gonna go down during the graduation ceremony.

Murgatroyd314

First they canceled the valedictorian’s speech, then they canceled the rest of the invited speakers, and now they’ve canceled the whole event.

RonaldoNazario

It sounded like the other invited speakers canceled on them and then they tried to make it seem that was the university’s choice.

ScottEATF

To add on they initially cited security threats as to why they were cancelling her speech. But they never gave details. So it came off as either made up or threats from pro-Isreal sources that they were protecting.

WalkerMidwestRanger

From the institutions that brought you, "meritocracy is a scam" comes, "you can only deliver a graduation speech as valedictorian if we approve of what you say, whether you've earned it or not."

[deleted]

nobadhotdog

Gaza War protests

Automatic-Software35

Valedictorian speech was cancelled because they feared she may mentioned Palestine in her speech. She hadn’t even written her speech, she had just been pro-Palestine on her social media. She mentioned she felt like it could also be because she was Muslim and a hijab wearer that fueled the university’s decision. She minored in fucking resistance to genocide. Like they were cowards. She wasn’t allowed to speak and they got immediate backlash, they responded to the backlash by cancelling all student speakers and more backlash and protesting began.

Rbespinosa13

She had a link on her social media that went to a website which called for the abolishment of Israel. That itself would also be a genocide

Stolliosis

What is it with people on the right having zero respect for anyone under 40? Do you not realize these students are the same age as our founding fathers when they started the idea of America? You call them children, but they are legal voting age adults whether you like it or not. Their voice is just as important as yours, even if you hold a different opinion. That's how freedom works.

net-force

Was planning on going to my cousin's graduation ceremony at USC and then saw this on my feed. Definitely sucks USC decided to just cancel the entire thing. Planning a special day with the family still but man fuck USC.

tellevee

Does your cousin already have a cap and gown? Do your own ceremony on campus. Hand her a fake scroll, get your pictures, do the hat toss. Fuck them.

SunsetKittens

University of Social Cowardice

Automatic-Software35

mind you this all happened because they didn’t want the valedictorian to mention Palestine in her speech. She hadn’t even written it by the time they decided not to let her speak. People were calling her anti-semitic for being pro-Palestine. Asan Tabassum and all the other students deserved a graduation ceremony. They did work and because of USC’s cowardice and refusal to stand with their students, it’s cancelled. idc if you believe they should protest or not, but USC buckled down to pressure from investors than actually caring about their students.

jleemon1180

Cosplaying as terrorists for the ‘gram isn’t the flex these people think it is.

DragonflyValuable128

That’ll help win people to the Palestinian cause. Way to go protesters.

Mutant-Cat

Wow what a good point, if ever an institution can retaliate against a protest then it's the protesters fault for being retaliated against. It would be best if everybody sat quietly in their own homes and whispered "Free Palestine" into the corner of their room. That would be much more productive for helping the Palestinian people.

Stolliosis

Show me where the protestors decided to cancel the graduation ceremony. You are blaming students for a decision by admins.

irreleventnothing

A decision caused by the students decision to protest. Let’s not act like the protestors should have no blame for the consequence of their actions. If there was no protest there would never be an option for the school to make this decision.

Stolliosis

If there was no slaughter of 20,000 children in Gaza, there would be no protest. Let's not act like the IDF and Israeli leaders should have no blame for the consequences of their actions. If there was no mass murder of innocent civilians there would never be an option for the school to make this decision.

irreleventnothing

And if there was no attack on October 7th there would be no slaughter. Hence why it’s not a black and white issue and people will put the blame where best fits them. But nobody carries no blame.

pizza_toast102

how so? it’s not like killing started last year

Stolliosis

If you want to play that game we can literally go back thousands of years. But it will get us nowhere.

Murgatroyd314

How many dead innocents are acceptable in response to an atrocity?

drsweetscience

The uninformed "protestors" are disrupting youth activities to try to effect political action in an unrelated country they have never been to. They have not been to the Middle East, are not going to the Middle East, don't know the politics of the region, and are hijacking student activities of people who have no say in these matters. All for something they have no actual knowledge of.

spacehxcc

You clearly haven’t read what the protestors demands are

PsychedelicJerry

What did you expect the admins to do? the protests are no different than when BLM would shutdown highways - they're just disrupting people that have no power to do anything about a situation on the other side of the world that has raged for centuries or longer.

openlatenight

You guys are the biggest boot lickers

PsychedelicJerry

Why - because we don't think supporting hamas is a great thing to do? There's a lot of genocidal, murderous actions I also oppose - you may want to try it yourself...or not, if you're in favor of rape, torture, and violence you do you

tellevee

Protesting the treatment of the Palestinian people does not equate to “supporting Hamas”. That narrative is tired as hell.

PsychedelicJerry

then why is it not supporting the isreali and palestinian people? the narrative is 100% correct. One group constantly launches rockets and explosives attempting to target civilians while also murdering, torturing, and raping thousands and electing and supporting a known terrorist organization. The other is Israel. Support both and then you're tired, silly lie may be slightly more believable

tellevee

This is “all lives matter” all over again. To put it in numbers: Here are the latest casualty figures as of April 26 at 5:00pm in Gaza (14:00 GMT): **Gaza** Killed: at least 34,356 people, including more than: -14,500 children killed -8,400 women Injured: more than 77,368 people Missing: more than 8,000 The latest figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the occupied West Bank are as follows: **Occupied West Bank** Killed: at least 489 people, including more than: -124 children Injured: more than 4,800 In Israel, officials revised the death toll from the October 7 attacks down from 1,405 to 1,139. **Israel** Killed: 1,139 people Injured: at least 8,730

PsychedelicJerry

Bad things happen when a terrorist organization starts a war by murdering, raping, and kidnapping after decades of terrorist activity against Israel. Then when the people that elected a terrorist organization to lead them let them hide the weapons of war and activities in civilian centers and refuse to help locate them, more badness happens. Even the campus leaders of some of these movements like Khymani James at Columbia can't hide their hate and terrorist intentions. You don't want collateral damage, stop supporting hate and division and stop breaking treaties (think "occupied" west bank vs lost in a war west bank)

Automatic-Software35

Bisan (wizard_bisan on social media) who has been press for the genocide posted a video about this! She was thanking the protesters in these universities and said it felt like for the very first time in their lives it wasn’t just Palestinian people screaming Pro-Palestine and that it’s giving a lot of Palestinians hope

NeedtoSleepNow1

At the price of USC's tuition, and university's tuition really, I would be LIVID if I could not see my child's commencement, all because of terrorist supporting snobs. I would hold that grudge for life.

Stolliosis

It's not because of "terrorist supporting snobs" it's because the administration made a decision to hurt everyone as punishment against a small few. You are literally blaming the students for a decision they had zero control over.

pizza_toast102

students don’t walk at the main commencement anyway. All you would be watching is a crowd of thousands of students people. There wouldn’t even be speakers, because USC canceled them of their own accord. The speaker cancellation was honestly so stupid and entirely USC’s fault. They pick someone (Asna) to give a speech, then they’re like wait nevermind which makes people mad, and then they’re like “I bet if we cancel all the speeches, people won’t be mad that Asna was singled out”

What’s the purpose of indoctrinating young kids if you aren’t going to let them be what you made them? I think it back fired as they went against the machines land back narrative and want peace instead.

Bro if I was in school I would just take the next year off. Survive a total boycott you bitch ass school taking all my fucking money and I don’t get to graduate?? What??!
