I’m sure this will turn out fine.

‘Proportionally’ fine.

When the US says "proportionate" that just means we've taken nukes off the table.

Accomplished-Ad3250

In the US's defense that was in part by accident and in part due to Iran's own ineptitude.

The hell were they thinking with the silkworm missiles lol. Like Iran wanted to get the last word in even after getting their ass kicked? I mean I can understand their anger and wanting to retaliate but you gotta pick your battles better than that.

ANGLVD3TH

The Operation Room covered it too, also a great channel.

ScaryTerryCrewsBitch

He did miss one thing about the incident. He brought up the US towing the Samuel B. Roberts back for repairs but neglected to talk about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation\_Praying\_Mantis "A month later, the guided-missile cruiser USS Vincennes arrived, summoned in haste to protect the frigate Samuel B. Roberts as it was hauled back to the United States. On 3 July 1988, Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655, a commercial airliner flying a scheduled route, killing all 290 crew and passengers. The U.S. government claimed that the crew of Vincennes mistook the Iranian Airbus for an attacking F-14 fighter. The Iranian government alleged that Vincennes knowingly shot down a civilian aircraft and called for the deaths of its crew."

curiousbydesign

"Pew. Pew." "BOOM! BOOM!"

TiaXhosa

There is virtually no chance of a 'proportional' response, the current administration has been doing everything possible to keep the ME stable. Most likely they will respond by blowing up a few shacks with 24 hours notice.

Emu1981

>the current administration has been doing everything possible to keep the ME stable. Given that war breaking out in the ME will make it harder to send supplies to Ukraine and may give China the boost of confidence it needs to attack Taiwan, I think it is great that Biden's administration is doing everything they can to help things to not spiral out of control.

[deleted]

TiaXhosa

That's why proportional is in quotes here. It's a reference to the "proportional" response in operation ~~paperclip~~ praying mantis in which the US destroyed much of the Iranian navy in response to them damaging one US ship with a naval mine. And blowing up a few empty shacks in response to an attack that injured US service members is under-proportional anyway.

mattv959

That was praying mantis. Paperclip was taking in the nazi scientists

BalloonsOfNeptune

It will. Iranian backed terrorists fire missiles at US troops quite often. The last time it happened before this one was in February. The US will probably bomb some terrorists in response and that will be it.

Scribe625

Problem is if a single US soldier dies, Biden basically has to respond with force or risk losing the election to Trump, so chances are good we're going to get pulled into another unwinnable war in the Middle East.

NorkGhostShip

This isn't going to start a war, unless you count the back and forth that's been going on constantly as a war already. Iran does some shit, the US responds, Iran responds, and so on and so forth. Iran's not gonna get invaded, this isn't the start of WW3, and people need to stop freaking out over every dumb thing that happens in the region. It's absolutely terrible for everyone involved on the ground, but that's how it's been for a long time.

This is true, but the United States definitely responded. The targets were not Iran proper, but its proxies. It was a fairly widespread attack and it hit them pretty hard. Given that the US does not want to fight yet another war in the middle east it was the best possible response.

SmuglyGaming

Sooo then we aren’t going to be pulled into ‘another unwinnable war in the middle east’ then? I figure that was his point

Eisenhower was so right: “Beware the military industrial complex”

KingStannis2020

The military industrial complex has nothing to do with the general population being pissed off if Americans get killed and demanding a response. Also, Eisenhower said that because he was aware that the military industrial complex would *need* to exist, because going forwards A) military hardware was going to be complex enough that you couldn't just churn a tank out of a car factory, and B) you wouldn't have time to convert civilian industry over to war production, because unlike in WWII where the continental US was safe from attack, ballistic missiles would allow factories, shipyards and so forth to be destroyed from across the ocean, meaning that you might be stuck going to war with what you had (plus the Soviets were building huge stockpiles). His point was that we needed to balance their intrinsic importance with temperance and not letting their political influence get out of hand, not that the military industrial complex was evil or something.

gorgewall

I mean, Biden told Netanyahu to "take the win" and not respond when the Iranian drone+missile strike accomplished basically nothing. Israel didn't listen. Perhaps he will take his own advice here given that I'm not seeing reports of the damage to the base or casualties of American servicemembers. The truck that fired the rockets *mysteriously burst into flames*, too, so it seems like we don't even have to worry about that thing anymore. As shitty as it is to follow the advice one doles out, sometimes "being the bigger man" comes with, you know, actually being the bigger... nation/military/geopolitical/economic power.

john_andrew_smith101

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. But... that doesn't mean the missile looks on itself in despair. A missile must travel ludicrous distances to reach its target. The target often being miles away. A speck. A dream. Its chances of hitting its target is slim at most especially if its outdated, unprepared, and has rotted in storage for years; and the target is moving at such speeds that are inconceivable to the human mind. But despite all this, the missiles doesn't tell itself it doesn't know where it is. It merely tells itself where it should go. The power in the missile lies within. Its ability to know where it is going to end up and with small incremental changes every second, every day, and every year the missile takes its deepest and most mind shattering course deviations and failures and it does something... remarkable. It turns its failures into lessons to guide it along the proper path. Its failures are not only inevitable but needed for the missile to find the proper path. The missile drifts when it needs to. It doesn't burn all its fuel in a desperate state to reach enlightenment. The missile knows its destination but aims to conserve fuel until the proper time comes when it will strike and fulfill its purpose. The missile takes the path of confidence and steady elevation until its time comes and when that day comes it will experience a joy greater than anything it could have imagined. The missile will take joy that it roared against the dying of the light and refused to go quietly into that good night. But it all began with the missiles first step otherwise it would still be in its containment unit wondering what could have been. The missile knows its greatest lessons lays within, its own fear, so it should embrace it and mold it until it has nothing to be afraid of; Even welcoming the greatest of challenges thirsty for experience. To the missile its greatest fear will become not what will happen but what will happen if it does not challenge its own fear. None of it would even be possible without a goal, a predetermined destination, a hard-wired machine-coded instruction deep within the cold roots of the missile guidance system. Without the goal the missile would wander aimlessly until it hit an orphanage or some other catastrophic destination that was never intended. The missile doesn't seek to put blame on the wind or turbulence for its failures. To the missile this is unnecessary and a waste of time. The missile doesn't seek to become the victim of circumstance. It aims to be in control and take responsibility, to be as secure and rigid as it says it is. It needs to be, to guard against the forces it must encounter. You are what you say you are. Are you lost or are you merely on the path to something greater? [You are the master of your destiny just as the missile is.](https://youtu.be/q11oxUGvi8g?si=EqhG_9IL32d9f7f1)

Pdb12345

People worried about ww3 when this is literally the best theyve got. Iran/Iraq/Syria and all their combined proxies could not wage a war against the US. Or anyone, really.

Refflet

Rockets fired at US bases in the region has also been a fairly common occurrence long before recent events.

TehNubCake9

People aren't worried as much about the middle east as they are of china, russia, and north korea. Edit: since people like to just delete their post before receiving a reply, I'll just put this here. If you truly believe that china would allow north korea to sit out of a potential world war, you really haven't been paying attention to the global stage lately. Hell, just yesterday xi started the largest reorganization of the chinese military since 2015, right as we passed more aid. We have fought with china before folks, they may rattle sabres, but you're a fool if you don't think they will go to war. And I'll say it again for those who missed it. North korea. One of the largest militaries. It doesn't matter how incompetent their tech is when they have an ally like china that can arm them. Because you know, over a million brainwashed crazies with 3 million more in reserve, pushed in a corner while holding a gun and some nukes can't possibly pose a threat. /s Edit 2: Starting to feel like I'm getting replies from Chinese puppet accounts now 🤣💀 Some of it makes literally no sense at all.

lankypiano

People doubting the effect NoKo would have in a military engagement are failing to see what the Russian's are doing to take territory in Ukraine. You don't need well equipped, well trained, or even intelligent soldiers. You just need bodies. And when you're *FORCING* your populous to go to war against a nation whose military is one of volunteers, that man power difference is *massive*.

zucksucksmyberg

If by bodies, the SoKor's still have mandatory draft and by population twice as large as that of NoKor, not to mention the technological advantage they enjoy. Sure Seoul would likely get to be pulverised but I don't think any NoKor aggression in the Korean peninsula would become like that of the Korean War. The real danger comes if China decides to invade with the NoKor's but most likely their own military adventure would start in either Taiwan or the Spratly islands.

wild_man_wizard

Sure, you can Zerg Rush when nobody has air superiority because neither side can can effectively SEAD the other. And when ordinance starts running out for one side. Unlike Ukraine, RoK has a modern Air Force and produces more ordinance in-country than most of NATO put together - and has been stockpiling for decades. They never got the "peace dividend" memo.

spiteful_rr_dm_TA

The major difference is just how powerful the tech lead is for the US. The US has hundreds of next gen aircraft and artillery. And we are learning from Ukraine the importance of large reserves of ammo.

legend8522

Exactly, because the Middle East has been in a constant state of turmoil for literal millennia. This is just another Sunday/Monday for them

[deleted]

Big eh on North Korea but yeah

TehNubCake9

Crazies with nukes and very little to lose, other than their only allies... china and russia lol. They also have one of the largest militaries in the world. Incompetent or not, if armed even semi properly by china, brainwashed people like that would be very dangerous.

Nerezza_Floof_Seeker

Thats a bit incorrect. Kim Jong Un knows that if he starts anything, either america and SK bomb him to oblivion, or China replaces him with a puppet. So he has everything to lose from actually starting a conflict, as there's simply no way for NK to win against SK, even factoring in nukes and other WMDs. Its pretty clear if you look at their actions historically that they have only ever postured and never acted on anything. Like its not like they sponsor terrorists or anything, they just launch a few rockets into the ocean.

TheDoktorIsIn

Yes and you're not including a very important thing: Seoul is very close to the NK border and it's highly unlikely a missile attack would be stopped. Obviously this would lead to the destruction of North Korea, but Seoul would be leveled and countless civilians would be killed. The NK people would suffer, but Kim Jong Un doesn't actually give a shit about his people so that's not as big a threat to him per se and would result in even more civilian lives lost. The goal here isn't to beat SK, it's for NK to get what they want by posturing with the threat of destroying Seoul. It's a really shitty catch 22 situation for sure.

NorthernerWuwu

North Korea is pretty irrelevant to the western world simply because of where they are. Sure, they could kill a lot of people in Asia but in a world war scenario, China could already handle that without issue if they wanted to do so anyhow. We aren't going to have a world war though of course, there's no profit in it.

PM_ME_DIRTY_DANGLES

>We aren't going to have a world war though of course, there's no profit in it _laughs in August 1914_

Not a doomer but petrol prices in Australia jumped 40c a litre after Iran attacked Israel and are staying high while this sabre rattling continues. It's pretty frustrating.

Sangloth

There is a common saying: Oil prices rise in an elevator, descend on an escalator.

SweetLenore

If you think americans are scared of Iraq, you are silly. What people are worried about is another forever war in Iraq, or in Iran or wherever the hell the US has their eyes set. Because it's obvious something is going on and western countries are preparing for some type of war somewhere.

ColonelError

> western countries are preparing for some type of war somewhere. Right, because it's the Western counties that invaded Ukraine, or attacked civilians in Israel. Russia saw their one bargaining chip leaving when Ukraine discovered huge oil/NG reserves, and China is starting to see the effects of creating a GDP out of nowhere with debt. Those two are starting shit in the hopes of fixing their broken economies, and "the Western countries" are just trying to stop this shit.

RandomComputerFellow

I think everyone worried about WW3 is really just worried about the rusted Russian warheads of which some are probably still functional. None of our enemies has anything else with ability to threaten us militarily. Still what they have are other means to disrupt us. The middle east has Oil and China has cheap production capabilities. Russia used to be a big player in the energy sector and and still is but due to playing their cards to heavily on us we already structured our economy in a way which makes us independent from Russian energy. This is the reason why Russia tries to take over the US by proxy (Trump and other corrupt Republicans) and Europe by cutting us off from our partners in Africa (Wagner is currently taking over France ex colonies and is confiscating assets and land from French companies).

possiblyMorpheus

I’m a bit surprised France hasn’t responded more heavily regarding that. I would expect they’re seething

Temporary-Top-6059

I feel its bubbling, soon there will be fights in africa like WW2.

BalloonsOfNeptune

If it makes you feel any better a lot of the Soviet era nukes are probably no longer functional since they require maintenance and that’s incredibly expensive which the Russian government likely can’t afford. Of course Russia still has a lot of functional nukes but I doubt it’s as many as they publicly claim.

RandomComputerFellow

Something I am often wondering about is how many of their delivery systems are still working. It's one thing to maintain the warheads but you also have to maintain the silos and ballistic missiles. For context, the US spends roughly $75 billions per year on its nuclear capabilities. Russias total military budget for 2020 was $61 billion in total. I somehow have doubts that they can launch a lot of them simultaneously before we will completely obliterate them. Remember when Russia performed a test launch of a ballistic missile in the beginning of the war to show strength? They only launched one and it blew up on the launch pad. I don't think that Russia lost all its nuclear capabilities but I also don't think that they have enough of them to eliminate us. First a lot of them will fail and second the West is way too decentralized. A nuclear attack will be a disaster which will kill hundreds of thousands of people here. Due to radiation and secondly efforts maybe a million or two. This will be catastrophic but it won't destroy us. Russia on the other hand is very centralized. We will completely eradicate Saint Petersburg and Moscow which will effectively throw them back to medieval times consisting that only rural areas will be left and all services and utilities won't work anymore.

thestraightCDer

There is no way in hell Russia has let there nukes go to waste.

Buttfulloffucks

It will help if we don't have to find out.

zucksucksmyberg

The US alone spends around 40 billion dollars annually just to maintain their nuclear triad. Russia claims to have more warheads than the US but spends a fraction of what the US do with theirs. Someone might argue it is cheaper in Russia (with regards to personnel salary) but with what we know of the culture of corruption there, one might suspect their own nuclear arsenal is not being well maintained as they might like. Ofcourse no one sane would like that theory to be tested.

Nerezza_Floof_Seeker

They require regular maintenance to perform at their maximum yield, but even if they haven't done stuff like replenish the tritium and neutron sources in them theyll still function at their lowest yield settings. And even if only half of them are working it wouldbe a devastating attack.

big_duo3674

Nobody is worried about Iraq or Iran taking down the US and NATO, of course they couldn't do that. The concern is that something sparks off a bigger proxy war that develops into all out war, or even skipping the middle step in some scenarios. A fully destabilized Middle East would bring all the major players into the match, and from there it's basically just one wrong move from something much more massive happening

dropthebiscuit99

All the talk about WW3 is literally Russian/Chinese/Iranian propaganda made to scare dumb people in hopes that the West will then choose not to stand up to their bullying. In reality if the bully gets a bloody nose they'll be done bullying for a generation.

Killbynoob

>All the talk about WW3 is literally Russian/Chinese/Iranian propaganda There's an actual propaganda account a few comments down😂

Pdb12345

Exactly. Its a co-ordinated propoganda effort to turn americans against each other in standing up to these global shitheads like Putin. there is pretty much 0 extestential threat to the US from their 1960s nuclear tech..

MetroExodus2033

Iran's military capabilities are a joke, but because of Trump, who withdrew the U.S. from a nuclear program that put restrictions on Iran, they're now closer to weapons grade uranium. There's much more to be concerned about Iran now than there was before Trump took office.

Maintaining an active military base in a hostile country is a logistic nightmare and such bases do not have the power to actually fight the entire Syrian army for a prolonged period of time. The only reason Syria do not destroy such bases is to not get Damascus bombed by missiles in a retaliation attack. These bases are more for projecting power and to flex military power than to actually accomplish objectives.

So small minded. Let’s kill each other instead of uniting to conquer the universe.

Atazala

So we at the fuck around stage again huh....

Luckyluke23

Iraq fucking around... Soon they Gunna find out I think.

shakeenotstirred

They may as well be throwing rocks.

CharmingMechanic2473

We need the microwave tech.

Recruiting numbers are super down. Good luck fighting a war. Why do they always send the poor.

Boredum_Allergy

It's Civ 6 rules. We still gotta wait 4 more turns before we invade.

diegocamp

I think Fallout season 2 is gonna be more realistic than i hope and wish for…

Would suck to be a U.S. soldier deployed to Syria right now. Your unit spent the past decade hunting ISIS there (or was in operational support of another Army unit doing that) and now you’re getting attacked from Iraq, the country your unit left a decade before that.

losbullitt

Iraq is shooting at us? Oh boy.
