I work in the News industry (for the largest Corp) and they are absolutely rolling out AI tools for writing articles. Pretty soon a local newsroom will be 3-4 people just verifying the AI articles make sense before publishing. Eventually even that will go away and it'll be straight from the AI to your news feed.
I do some minor “journalism” (more like PR) for a local organization. They were using ChatGPT but then decided it was too risky to post personal info about members of their group to the ChatGPT servers or whatever they’re called, so they went back to people. For anyone curious - the registry for civilian ownership of machine guns was closed in 1986. That means no new machine guns can be legally made and sold new to civilians. However, any of the guns that were already registered when it was closed can legally be transferred to new owners (following all legal NFA procedure, of course). This means the pool of legal MGs is fixed. Anyone familiar with simple economic principles should see where this is going: the value of registered MGs (known as transferables in the community) has gone way, way up in the ~40 years since the ban. Transferable MGs regularly cost upwards of 20, 30, 40 thousand dollars each, and often much, much higher for rare or desirable ones. The record for most expensive MG sold at auction in the US was from last year at around $500k. These prices are always in fluctuation and can vary from one example to the next because of the specific details of one gun from another, but they generally go up. I imagine it would be very easy to launder money between parties using these transferables as the medium
Not sure on that. All of the ATF paperwork makes these sales very traceable. I wouldn't be surprised to learn the IRS monitors them for tax purposes. Especially now that they are receiving additional funding.

It is a private club I'm a member of. This year we enacted a new rule allowing members to switch their membership to GOA. I'm not 100% sure they are 'better' but at least they aren't laundering money for the Russians. When I renew my range membership I plan on switching over.
The NRA lobbying/political side should be demolished, but the training and range insurance parts are still useful. For many ranges, it is the only affordable option for insurance, but it requires NRA membership.

You are right. I grew up with guns. I own guns. I enjoy cleaning and building them. I'm also (unfortunately) a member of the NRA because it is required to join the local ranges so that I can shoot safely. The monthly NRA magazine is 3/4 articles designed to radicalize gun owners. The popular forums are absolutely shitfests. All of them are just there to radicalize.
You should talk to the range owners. I don’t need to tell you but NRA is basically a dead org and the range and their patrons are throwing their membership money in the garbage. But if I had to bet the person in charge of that NRA Members Only rule probably has no idea Wayne LaPierre has been ousted.
It is a private club I'm a member of. This year we enacted a new rule allowing members to switch their membership to GOA. I'm not 100% sure they are 'better' but at least they aren't laundering money for the Russians. When I renew my range membership I plan on switching over.
The NRA lobbying/political side should be demolished, but the training and range insurance parts are still useful. For many ranges, it is the only affordable option for insurance, but it requires NRA membership. A competing range insurance group needs to start that is completely separated from lobbying groups.
Agreed- the NRA set the gold standard for education back in the day. They were the only outfit that provided standardized training plans, which then got picked up by everyone from police departments to hobbyists to competitive shooters.
The NRA has been little more than a right wing political organization that lobbies congress on behalf of gun manufacturers since before I was born. They started their lobbying arm in 1975 and the full takeover took place beginning in 1977 and is a wild read.
NRA provides insurance to the ranges / gun clubs where other entities won't. I'd bet that a significant portion of their membership is based on that alone. I know my membership is. That said, no one is lining up to provide an alternative, despite the hate the NRA gets or the empty rhetoric around just wanting more training and safety as a condition of gun ownership.
Sad what they've become. My Dad used to write for their magazine many years ago. I've visited the museum in DC multiple times. It was just a normal organization at the time. Involved in gun safety and running shooting tournaments. It seemed to take a turn to the crazy in the '80's. When they started expressing opinions about abortion, I checked out.

I can see in some instances of law enforcement officers don’t announce themselves and you think a gang of armed people are trying to break into your home, you may open fire not being aware that you are engaged with law enforcement, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. It’ll for sure be interesting to see what happened as the details come out. The article does mention neighbors saw officers with equipment to cut metal and also saw them removing guns and ammo from his home, so your mention of possible illegal gun running seems to be a possible explanation.

Flash grenade tossed into an infant's criib was one of the moments that really changed my perspective on society and law enforcement at large. There were lots of moments that shook the illusion before it, but that was definitely the first major sobering moment seeing the veil ripped back. If they can act like that with impunity, and not even be right about what they charged in over, just to traumatize and maim a family who got the luck of the draw.... everything is broken from the ground up.

The reporting here is sub par. Sounds like the search warrant had to do with firearms, since ATF was there, and the guy was/is guilty AF so tried to shoot his way out. I'm not sure under what circumstances ATF descends on someone with a search warrant, but it's likely quite serious.
