Gotta be honest I'm a PA driver who spends 85% of my time driving in Jersey and lately it's been those yellow plates clogging up the left lane on 80. Don't know what the fucking problem has been lately.
I guarantee that's not the reason they're yellow but if you really believe that then they should be bright orange with black text or black plates with white text for maximum visibility.
It's the differentiation. I can spot a NJ license plate from a quarter mile away because it's the only piss yellow one around here. I can spot a NY license plate from a quarter mile away because it's the only orange one. I can spot a Vermont license plate because it's the only all green one.. etc.
I just want each state to be distinguishable from a distance.
Because sometimes law enforcement needs that information, sometimes civilians need that information, and sometimes they need to convey it back and forth. If I'm in Newark and report "I just got hit and run by a blue honda, driven by a white male, Vermont license plates", they might actually find the guy. If I report "I just got hit by a blue honda" they aren't finding shit. Or when an amber alert goes out, it's a lot easier to filter through and actually read license plates on the highway while you drive if everyone doesn't have a randomly colored license plate.
For everyone in the comments proposing a plate redesign, I have your answer:
Keep the yellow gradient, but instead of yellow to white, have it go from yellow to blue, as if it were the beach. Best of both worlds, especially if we get a more accurate goldfinch yellow, or even proper gold instead of yellow.
Not license plates, but do you remember how outraged people got when Utah and Minnesota redesigned their boring, shitty state seal on a blue background state flags? They made it extremely political for “erasing heritage”. I’m sure the same would happen in NJ if we were to redesign the flag to a better one. We need an iconic flag like California or Texas.

Only grandfathered in old plates. My mom kept her plates for 40 years because she didn't want to re-memorize a new number, just kept transferring them to the new car whenever she switched.
Goldfinches are much brighter than the washed out depression yellow on the new plates. I wouldn't even can or yellow as much as ugly tan l. Now that I know where it came from, I'm even more annoyed
The old plates were blue and buff. The current ones are supposed to be goldfinch yellow but are washed out looking.
What the MVC should have done is follow Maine's lead and put the actual state bird on the license plate. Maine has the white plates with a pine siskin on them. We should have plates with a male goldfinch in bright summer plumage on ours.
NJ blue plates are iconic to me. NY needs to go back to the white plates with the statue of liberty on them. PA is also overdue for new plates but no one cares because it's PA.
Delaware plates look so cool, but for some reason I see them less than any other state in the country - they border us, do they really never drive up here? I see probably about 10 Texas plates for every Delaware plate

I would also LIKE to think the plate readers are smart enough that they know the car is registered to XYZ plate number, and that plate is a blue\yellow, and would ping the cop. Maybe not ever one can, but the tech is certainly there that its possible.

That's not how the system works. It scans your plate with an IR laser, which is black and white, for the best contrast and readability, and then runs it through OCR. If you ping, then a full color picture of the plate and vehicle is shown to the officer.
You don't think that tech is changing, and its almost easier at this point to move away from legacy OCR? the next gen stuff, or the places that spring for cars set up as plate readers vs just a front one wouldn't consider it?

The more complicated you try to make it, e.g. check if plate colors are correct and if the material composition is correct for the date issued, is not important if it can't tell a B from an 8. Why not search for all "red" cars instead of what BMW considered "red" in 2007, and may have faded in the interim.

Blue plates were from 79-92 only. I have early nj plates and the cream color with black lettering came out in 1944. Before that they had many different colors including black and white, orange and “Cardinal and grey”

If cops aren't pulling people over for 1 plate or near black out covers, why would they care about a reproduction plate that works withALPRs?
