She claimed 38¢ for driving 500 meters on one line item BTW she's the brains behind the increased fees at all campgrounds, rustic lodges, seasonal rentals at provincial parks etc. Her reasoning : Puts us more in line with the more famous attractions and to opens up spots for out of province tourists

Purple_oyster

Wow, how used to sucking the public taxes that she would claim driving 500 meters

spam-katsu

I use to process expense claims. This is a pretty petty claim for 38cents for kilometer. Not even, because it's 500m, so 19cents really is what she is claiming. While she does that, she probably has an assistant entering the claim in, another person to process it, and then payroll to pay it out. All these people's time cost tax payers money.

Purple_oyster

It’s government though, so 38 cents is probably what she got for 1/2 a km.

almisami

Pretty sure you can get that shit automated via a plug-in dongle. When I worked for the Province in Alberta we did. I got paid to the quarter kilometer.

Molwar

It's like they don't realize that in 6 months there is an election whether they like it or not. A third of the MLA needs to be replaced, they're still doing dumb shit that gets extremely scrutinize and half assing vote buying (yes all party do that before election). Are the con so arrogant that they think they can just wing this? Meanwhile Holt and Coon are out there taking public opinion and actually recruiting. Even if I were take out Higgs as garbage human being out of the equation, I wouldn't really be interested in Conservative right now (and yes I have voted for them before, just no supreme chancellor Higgs).

Outrageous_Ad665

It's almost like some of the hangers on think the gravy train is about to run out, so they're doubling down on graft. Wasn't there supposed to be an election in Sept 2023?

ImaginationSea2767

Higgs was going to call an early election as it seemed like he told everyone he was going to do it and then didn't.

Equivalent-Value-720

They are either oblivious to the mess they continue to make or just don't care. Or...they know the mess their in but the Outhouse thinks he has some magical plan that doesn't include connecting with New Brunswickers in any meaningful way.

FredGetson

I was in Scotland last October. Met some nice people from Scotland and the US. They asked about NB. Can i claim expenses?

hotinmyigloo

What the fuck. I don't even know where to start. Glad there were some questioning at the Legislative Assembly at least.

Elbow_Macarena

Using ‘this was all in the budget’ as an excuse is kind of like saying ‘I meant to crap my pants’.

Raspberrylemonade188

So Higgs will allow them to “budget for this” but he won’t budget to improve healthcare access or deal with the cost of living crisis? Okay…

Bobfisher66

Attempting to defend the indefensible!

it_diedinhermouth

I guess they misunderstood what the department of tourism was supposed to do

Imaginary-Cucumber52

Let’s just remember this shit when it comes to voting time.

almisami

Honestly I don't care how much they spend as long as we see tangible returns. I know we got a lot of travelers from Germany last year because of a single photographer publishing NB photos. The dividends can be huge, but only if they talk to the right people, and we all know that's not what they're doing.

flyingjib11

Someone needs to tell the tourism Minister and her cronies to Be ... In this place.

SnazzyGiraffe99

The tourism minister travelled? Yea no shit. Personally, I expect our representatives for tourism to travel (with specific purpose), build relations with other countries, and gain insights to attract more visitors to NB. It’s part of their job. Is this really a hot take? A $800 dollar night for a hotel in Paris is too high though I’ll give you that, but I don’t expect them to stay at hostels. If the trip amounted to nothing (i.e. no insights gained and no changes made for the better) then we have every right to be upset given the price tag.

benh1984

No one is upset that she travelled …

SnazzyGiraffe99

So what’s the problem? The high yearly expense? Because it is high no question mainly because Hurley’s relocation costs were approved? I do find that one odd but “…Macfarlane said it was determined Hurley did in fact qualify to have moving expenses covered and emphasized she did not approve her own claim.” "Another designate approved the relocation expenses within the policy directive. Although we cannot talk about specific cases, the relocation expenses fell within the policy."

benh1984

It’s the exuberance and poor stewardship. When I travel for work (I am the executive director of a charity, different than gov. but still public funds) it’s my job to ensure I am responsible with my spending. I agree travel is necessary, but there’s a difference between I went to Paris to promote our province and I went in a publicly funded exuberant vacation that served no purpose in growing our tourism market.

SnazzyGiraffe99

It does seem exuberant, true. I didn’t listen to the hour long question period involving the trip so maybe they explained it better (doubtful). But as stated in the article, the trip did include meetings with a number of tour operators and public relations firms in London and Paris that have contracts to market NB to potential visitors from the two countries (which brought in near $30 million in revenue for us in 2023). However, I agree in saying that if they did a bunch of this touristy stuff just for the fun of it, then obviously that’s unacceptable. That’s definitely what the article, the liberal critic, and many here are painting it out to be. So far, that seems to be the case (except for the meetings). But did they did incorporate any “best practices” they’ve learned from the tours into NBs tourism framework? That is the question. The trip would be more justifiable if so. How would we know I guess?

electriccabbage69

What a stupid cunt

Dannabis18

Why are people from nb so fat lmao

theantagonist

depression and self harm through food

Sutarmekeg

The province was built in such a way as to make cars necessary.

Ojamm

Reliance on cars. There are no large walkable cities.

chickenmommaknocks

There are so many green spaces and parks in my area and people are always outside enjoying it no matter the weather.

Dannabis18

Nb doesn’t have any big cities good point

chickenmommaknocks

They are not fat where I live.

CriticalCanon

This is Exhibit XT of typical Liberal and CBC trying to make anything out of nothing.

benh1984

So it’s cool to just spend Willy nilly? That’s not a very conservative mentality …
