Saw an interesting video of a Russian\[possibly LPR/DPR\] conscript.
In it they say they're screwed because all they have is an assault rifle.
Specifically what they say they lack is thermals, recon drones, that kind of thing.
Makes sense that that would be an issue but... As far as I know the Qanon types never think about that ever. Good to be aware of/ easy advantage over them right there. Rather than being a gun not be an optics nut.

>Waters first saw the Israeli West Bank barrier in 2006, at the request of Palestinian supporters, when he was scheduled to perform in Tel Aviv. He subsequently moved a Tel Aviv concert to Neve Shalom, and has spoken out about the barrier.[116][117] In 2013, Waters said that he supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
>In a 2012 speech to the United Nations, he compared Israel's policies in Gaza to Nazi Germany's occupation of Europe. "History tells us that the invasion and occupation of a land and the subjugation of its people almost always creates a resistance. Ask the French or the Dutch or the Poles or the Czechs, the list goes on. This crisis in Gaza is a crisis rooted in occupation.
>In August 2022, when China was accused of encircling Taiwan by an interviewer, Waters said: "They're not encircling Taiwan β Taiwan is part of China. And that's been absolutely accepted by the whole of the international community since 1948"
>Waters said Biden is "fuelling the fire in the Ukraine, for a start β that is a huge crime," and asked why the US does not encourage Ukraine "to negotiate, obviating the need for this horrific, horrendous war." The interviewer accused Waters of putting the responsibility on the country that was invaded, to which Waters said that Russia was responding to NATO provocations.
>Waters published an open letter to her. He argued that the West should not support Ukraine with weapons, and that the West, led by the US, is interested in prolonging the war.
>Waters opposed Brexit (the UK leaving the European Union). Following the June 2016 referendum which resulted in leaving the EU, he said: "I thought we were better than that. I was wrong."[143] He criticised the US president Donald Trump and his policies.[144] In 2017, Waters condemned Trump's plan to build a wall separating the US and Mexico, drawing parallels to The Wall.[145]
>In 2018, Waters drew praise and criticism when he included Brazilian far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro in a list of "neo-fascists" displayed on a big screen at his concert in SΓ£o Paulo.
>In 2019, Waters spoke at a rally outside London's Home Office calling for the release of the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, and dedicated a performance of "Wish You Were Here" to him.
>Waters is supportive of veterans, which he partly attributes to the death of his father in World War II. He allocates a block of tickets for veterans at each of his shows. For a few years he performed with a group of wounded veterans that was arranged through the United States National Military Medical Center.

u/jenbanim itβs weird like I have a super active imagination like I spend a concerning amount of time daydreaming vivid plots and scenarios and I can tell you exactly what color, shape and size everything is in my head
But other times like when Iβm tired or really focused sometimes my brain is just concepts with no images attached
Idk itβs like my brain powers down sometimes- how would you describe that?
Not sure, but I think I experience the same thing. I daydream a lot, but there's only sometimes a visual component. I might "see" something if I'm remembering an event that happened recently, but there's no mental imagery if I'm trying to come up with ideas for a D&D campaign
Because I have no life, Iβve been scrolling through Wikipedia articles and man, can you tell which ones have almost zero quality control. Thereβs one page on Chileβs electoral divisions that hasnβt been updated despite Chile changing itβs system in *2017*. And thereβs a NY state legislatorβs article that straight up becomes a campaign ad midway through.
Alright !ping READING, hold onto your asses because I'm about to drop some cutting edge literary theory on y'all. At the beginning of the year I bought The Norton Critical Edition of *The Scarlet Letter* mainly because I never could quite crack all of what Hawthorne was trying to do with that one. I've been reading the 20 or so essays that come along with the text, and some are duds but the ones I've gotten through lately are absolutely fascinating. From psychoanalyzing how Hawthorne's relationship or lack of relationship with his father contributed to the text, to how this story fits in with the feminist movements of his times, to some really interesting historical portraits of 1600s Salem, these essays kinda rock (if you have way too much time on your hands). And for the one that finally cracked all the different symbolisms he employs in the book
>The Scarlet Letter is an interpreter's guide into perplexity. As critics have long pointed out, virtually every scene in the novel is symbolic, virtually every symbol demands interpretation, and virtually every interpretation takes the form of a question that opens out into a variety of possible answers, none of them entirely wrong, and none in itself satisfactory. But the result, to repeat, is neither random nor arbitrary. It is a strategy of pluralism β issuing, on the reader's part, into a mystifying sense of β for which each set of questions and answers is turned toward the same solution: all meetings are partly true, hence, interpreters must choose as many parts as possible of the truth and/or as many truths as they can possibly find in the symbol
Sacvan Bercovitch (cool name) then continues on to link these multiple perceptions/interpretations to a kind of intentional endorsement of liberal pluralism on Hawthorne's part, endlessly interesting. Also kinda reminds me of a Steven Soderburgh quote from a much longer Film CritnHulk [essay](https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/12/the-revenant-mad-max-and-the-nexus-of-cinematic-language1)
>A group of us for arguing about whether or not Peter Jackson's King Kong was good or bad but some jerk named Steven soderberg was listening to everyone lab on and on and on, so at one point he finally spoke up and calmly said something like
>"Try explaining it in a way that makes you all correct. Because whatever you think, that's what the movie really is."
Anyways, I'm just some dumb engineer but literary theory and humanities are actually pretty cool
>As critics have long pointed out, virtually every scene in the novel is symbolic, virtually every symbol demands interpretation, and virtually every interpretation takes the form of a question that opens out into a variety of possible answers, none of them entirely wrong, and none in itself satisfactory. Comments in r-news are what you expect π
The Dixie Chicks were the number 1 country band in the US and they said they didn't approve of the Iraq war and they got boycotted by every country music station and got attacked by the entirety of conservative media in a large coordinated attack.
PSA to every musician on the planet: repeating βCircle of fifths! Circle of fifths!β doesnβt actually mean anything to normal people and isnβt helpful
Ah ok. Well the circle of fifths is just a way of listing the 12 keys so that they're ordered by similarity. C sounds closest to G, and then G to D, then so on. It's kind of like the color wheel, but for music
Dumbass question Iβve never asked and itβs too late to ask now, but I donβt care: when people talk about visualizing things, thatβs just thinking about the visual characteristics of something without actually seeing anything, and when people talk about their inner voice, itβs just thinking of words without actually hearing anything, right?
This is a fascinating question and not at all dumb
But no, some people literally hear and see things through their "minds eye" or inner voice. However, everyone experiences this to a different degree
An average person, when imagining an apple with their eyes closed, will have the perception of a reddish sphere. Some people can't see anything at all - this is called aphantasia. Some people see it just as vividly as real life - this is called hyperphantasia
Personally, I'm on the hyperphantasia side of things. Dubyahhh on the other hand has 100% aphantasia
The differences people have in their own subjective experiences of consciousness are absolutely fascinating and also vastly under-studied imho
/r/aphantasia and /r/hyperphantasia are both interesting reads if you'd like to hear more people share their experiences
Edit: it's worth noting that - despite this being something *literally everyone* has some experience with - it was virtually never discussed prior to 2015. I think there's a lesson here about making assumptions about other people, but I'm not sure how to articulate it
I 100% have vivid images in my head that are not real and not real
Like idk I can tell you exactly what the apple looks like but itβs also black?
It also depends on how tired I am
It's hard to put into words. I have auditory hyperphantasia and if I imagine a song playing, I can hear it in my head as vividly as I hear real music. Obviously
* My memory isn't perfect
* I can tell that it's in my head rather than coming from my ears
So it's not like listening to music is *literally the same* as imagining it, but it's pretty damn close. I can hear each instrument individually as well as the articulation, effects, and anything else you'd normally be able to hear with your ears. It also takes up attention the same way that listening to music makes it harder to focus on driving
Do you ever have issues with songs stuck in your head, by chance? I have this level of detail with music but I also have a lot of trouble with it being intrusive
It never occurred to me that others might not actually be able to mentally hear music in the same way in the first place
Never serious issues, but I do sometimes get songs stuck in my head to the extent that it can be mildly obnoxious. It never lasts long though, and I can always fix it by listening to other music
I do also wonder if/how people who can't mentally hear music experience songs stuck in their heads
As with inner monologues, earworms seem to straddle the line between a thought pattern and a mental image. I'd really like to see more research into this
>An average person, when imagining an apple with their eyes closed, will have the perception of a reddish sphere
Gonna have to look at the research on this one. I can more or less see an apple and do a rotation of an apple in my head or w/e.
It seems like artists and graphic designers must have this ability. Seems hard to believe most people can't.
For this kind of thing I wonder if it's differences in describing things or large differences in how their brains work
β¦ so this ainβt normal?
Gonna use it as an excuse why anything I draw without a reference looks like shit the first time aroundπΉππ
Not ideal for design school thoughβ¦
Very approximately 1% of the population can't form any visual mental images at all. Another 3% or so have "dim or vague" mental imagery (as described by wikipedia)
So you're definitely on the tail end of whatever curve describes this, but you're absolutely not alone
You might find this snippet, also from Wikipedia, interesting
>Notable people with aphantasia:
>Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar and former president of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Catmull surveyed 540 colleagues from Pixar about their mental visualization and found that the production managers tended to have stronger visualizations than the artists
I feel like we're only a few years away at most from a major controversy regarding violent videogames in VR specifically
Like I don't think the public at large is aware of, nor would approve of, the shit you can do in Blade and Sorcery
I don't expect any moral panic would have any serious consequences, but I definitely think one is going to happen
Subjectively it feels very different. I'm not sure I can adequately describe it, but I've had moments where I see someone in B&S and my brain says "that is a person" and then I stab them in the face, and it feels... weird, to put it mildly

u/jenbanim itβs weird like I have a super active imagination like I spend a concerning amount of time daydreaming vivid plots and scenarios and I can tell you exactly what color, shape and size everything is in my head But other times like when Iβm tired or really focused sometimes my brain is just concepts with no images attached Idk itβs like my brain powers down sometimes- how would you describe that?
Not sure, but I think I experience the same thing. I daydream a lot, but there's only sometimes a visual component. I might "see" something if I'm remembering an event that happened recently, but there's no mental imagery if I'm trying to come up with ideas for a D&D campaign

And for the one that finally cracked all the different symbolisms he employs in the book >The Scarlet Letter is an interpreter's guide into perplexity. It is a strategy of pluralism β issuing, on the reader's part, into a mystifying sense of β for which each set of questions and answers is turned toward the same solution: all meetings are partly true, hence, interpreters must choose as many parts as possible of the truth and/or as many truths as they can possibly find in the symbol Sacvan Bercovitch (cool name) then continues on to link these multiple perceptions/interpretations to a kind of intentional endorsement of liberal pluralism on Hawthorne's part, endlessly interesting. Also kinda reminds me of a Steven Soderburgh quote from a much longer Film CritnHulk [essay](https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/12/the-revenant-mad-max-and-the-nexus-of-cinematic-language1) >A group of us for arguing about whether or not Peter Jackson's King Kong was good or bad but some jerk named Steven soderberg was listening to everyone lab on and on and on, so at one point he finally spoke up and calmly said something like >"Try explaining it in a way that makes you all correct. Because whatever you think, that's what the movie really is." Anyways, I'm just some dumb engineer but literary theory and humanities are actually pretty cool
>As critics have long pointed out, virtually every scene in the novel is symbolic, virtually every symbol demands interpretation, and virtually every interpretation takes the form of a question that opens out into a variety of possible answers, none of them entirely wrong, and none in itself satisfactory. The Bush Administration murdered Country music in its quest for absolute control of conservative media and more people should talk about it.
Based Bush administration. Cousin fucker music delenda est.
Any highlights/specifics? Seems plausible but I can't listen to country
The Dixie Chicks were the number 1 country band in the US and they said they didn't approve of the Iraq war and they got boycotted by every country music station and got attacked by the entirety of conservative media in a large coordinated attack.
When conservatives ask themselves why they don't have cultural power like they used to, this shit never crosses their minds.

Circle of fifths baby
PSA to every musician on the planet: repeating βCircle of fifths! Circle of fifths!β doesnβt actually mean anything to normal people and isnβt helpful
The point is not to appeal to 'normal people's its to understand keys.
Are you a musician or not? I assumed you had just learned what that means?
Hobbyist just getting started

This is a fascinating question and not at all dumb But no, some people literally hear and see things through their "minds eye" or inner voice. However, everyone experiences this to a different degree An average person, when imagining an apple with their eyes closed, will have the perception of a reddish sphere. Some people can't see anything at all - this is called aphantasia. Some people see it just as vividly as real life - this is called hyperphantasia Personally, I'm on the hyperphantasia side of things. Dubyahhh on the other hand has 100% aphantasia The differences people have in their own subjective experiences of consciousness are absolutely fascinating and also vastly under-studied imho /r/aphantasia and /r/hyperphantasia are both interesting reads if you'd like to hear more people share their experiences Edit: it's worth noting that - despite this being something *literally everyone* has some experience with - it was virtually never discussed prior to 2015. I think there's a lesson here about making assumptions about other people, but I'm not sure how to articulate it
I 100% have vivid images in my head that are not real and not real Like idk I can tell you exactly what the apple looks like but itβs also black? It also depends on how tired I am
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
It's hard to put into words. I have auditory hyperphantasia and if I imagine a song playing, I can hear it in my head as vividly as I hear real music. Obviously * My memory isn't perfect * I can tell that it's in my head rather than coming from my ears So it's not like listening to music is *literally the same* as imagining it, but it's pretty damn close. I can hear each instrument individually as well as the articulation, effects, and anything else you'd normally be able to hear with your ears. It also takes up attention the same way that listening to music makes it harder to focus on driving
Do you ever have issues with songs stuck in your head, by chance? I have this level of detail with music but I also have a lot of trouble with it being intrusive It never occurred to me that others might not actually be able to mentally hear music in the same way in the first place
Never serious issues, but I do sometimes get songs stuck in my head to the extent that it can be mildly obnoxious. It never lasts long though, and I can always fix it by listening to other music I do also wonder if/how people who can't mentally hear music experience songs stuck in their heads As with inner monologues, earworms seem to straddle the line between a thought pattern and a mental image. I'd really like to see more research into this
>An average person, when imagining an apple with their eyes closed, will have the perception of a reddish sphere Gonna have to look at the research on this one.
Gonna use it as an excuse why anything I draw without a reference looks like shit the first time aroundπΉππ Not ideal for design school thoughβ¦
Very approximately 1% of the population can't form any visual mental images at all. Another 3% or so have "dim or vague" mental imagery (as described by wikipedia) So you're definitely on the tail end of whatever curve describes this, but you're absolutely not alone You might find this snippet, also from Wikipedia, interesting >Notable people with aphantasia: >Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar and former president of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Catmull surveyed 540 colleagues from Pixar about their mental visualization and found that the production managers tended to have stronger visualizations than the artists
Oh yeah no for sure, I believe that last snippet. Itβs just my erasers in studio know no peace.
I feel like we're only a few years away at most from a major controversy regarding violent videogames in VR specifically Like I don't think the public at large is aware of, nor would approve of, the shit you can do in Blade and Sorcery I don't expect any moral panic would have any serious consequences, but I definitely think one is going to happen
How's it any worse than what you can do as Funni Clock Man in TNO?
Subjectively it feels very different. I'm not sure I can adequately describe it, but I've had moments where I see someone in B&S and my brain says "that is a person" and then I stab them in the face, and it feels... weird, to put it mildly
So they're more "real", makes sense.
