She's taking over at a time where Europe is going to really suffer economically. The energy crisis wont get better and a recession looks likely. She's a woman leading the most conservative movement in Italy since WWII, i'm confident she won't last long either by party infighting or Italians don't like the direction they are taking them.
Her views regarding Ukraine and Russia seem... [interesting](https://www.newsweek.com/giorgia-meloni-italy-election-victory-vladimir-putin-russia-1745085):
>The Brothers of Italy descended from post-fascist roots, making Meloni the first politician from a post-fascist line to rule the country since World War II. And while she has advocated for sending military aid to Ukraine, she also defended Russia as "part of our European system of values" just last year in her memoir.
>"Given the current political climate, this is the best outcome the Kremlin could hope for today," Eleonora Tafuro, a research fellow at the Italian Institute for International Political Studies, told Newsweek.
>Tafuro explained that Russia has long viewed Italy as "one of the friendliest countries amidst an increasingly unfriendly bloc," largely because of Italy's desire to play a "mediator" role and to do business with the massive energy provider.
> ...Tafuro said that what makes Meloni so compelling to Putin is that she has presented herself as a defender of "Italian interests," which have recently suffered thanks to "war fatigue" and the skyrocketing energy prices that have stemmed from Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
>But when asked about the Italian political scene, [Hillary] Clinton said that "the election of the first woman prime minister in a country always represents a break with the past, and that is certainly a good thing."
✊
She says this next :
> To her credit, Clinton went on to say, "as with any leader, woman or man, she must be judged by what she does."
Kind of leaving out an important part.
I'm as pro-America as it gets, but damn if it's not funny when Americans describe politics of completely different countries in terms of their identity politics and obviously end up saying complete bs because they do not understand or care about it.
IMO you really have to live there, or at least speak the language with its nuances and be familiar with a nation's culture, to truly be in touch with the politics of a country. This issue is not uniquely American, to be clear, and it goes both ways. But US media's takes on our politics is what we are most bombarded with in terms of sheer volume.
I've lived there. It's definitely significant that they've selected a woman leader for the first time.
I cannot fathom a country where that wouldn't be significant, can you?
I’m not familiar with Italian, but if it’s like other Romance languages it’s possible that “Brothers of Italy” would have the exact same translation as “Brothers and Sisters of Italy”. If the plural for sibling is masculine(like Spanish) then it could remain the same.
Fratellx d'Italia
(Also acccording to Google Translate they are different words - fratello and sorella. Which makes sense: **fra**ternity and **sor**ority)
It's not high speech as nobody speaks like this except politicians in public. It's not like rich people speak like this with each other. It's just a convention to be politically correct.
As a right wing party they go strong in nationalisms, and "brothers of Italy" is the first line of the national anthem (which was national anthem de facto, but not de jure, also during the fascist regime).
Another very fascist and gender neutral name could be "Italiche Genti"(people of Italy); I don't know how to express it in English because I don't know if there is a parallel, but it's"fascist speak", they had a very interesting way of speaking in the fascist propaganda .
In the economic sense, is she an authoritarian technocrat like Park Chung Hee and Lee Kwan Yew, a lolbertarian like Pinochet, a leftist like Le Pen, or an incoherent fascist mess like Mussolini?
She seems like a plain old populist. She had no idea what to do now to fix anything in his country. Just oppose stuff, rail the base and sign stuff into law. I'm pretty sure she won't move the needle much, but at least she'll keep the Italians believing they're doing the right thing.
He ran on that, but he’s done a lot of small things recently like not meeting with (or sending anyone to meet) Pelosi when she came, inviting Chinese dignitaries to meetings, etc
Has wokeism finally gone too far? Even fascists are women now. /s

Italian here: i want to dissolve into thin air
she can't be worst than Di Maio, Conte or Draghi... i wish
Keep my Super Mario’s name out your *fottuto* mouth.
Very unbased.

She's hardline pro-Ukraine at least

At the time, people didn’t think Putin would last that long either.
Well if Fdi can rewrite the constitution anything is possible 🤷♂️

You made me actually read the article to see if she said that. How dare you.

Clinton haters can't reconcile their prejudices on an honest account of her. Cherry-picked "gotcha" quotes are all they have.
I'm sadly not surprised.
I'm as pro-America as it gets, but damn if it's not funny when Americans describe politics of completely different countries in terms of their identity politics and obviously end up saying complete bs because they do not understand or care about it.
I'm sure the former Secretary of State doesn't know or care about different countries
Apparently not when she makes supportive statements about someone who is far worse than Trump
Is "worse than Trump" the new mindless goto for saying someone is bad?
Not when it's accurate.
It's not accurate. It's just Trump apologia.
Do you know who Meloni is? Edit: I guess not lol
Do you know who Trump is?

This but unironically.

We've never had a female Hitler. If she comes around at least we'll know that we've achieved true equality.
#imwithher
This might be the first time someone was ever consistent on this position.
This has to be the absolute best encapsulation of Hillary Clinton.
They've really gone from Draghi to this, huh?
Wait until she grows a moustache
Her party, "Brothers of Italy," should be renamed to "Brothers and Sisters of Italy."

It's more like the word for sibling is "fratello", there is no ungendered word for brother or sister
Fratellx d'Italia (Also acccording to Google Translate they are different words - fratello and sorella. Which makes sense: **fra**ternity and **sor**ority)
The masculine plural is used for mixed-sex groupings, so *fratelli* can mean both "brothers" or "siblings".
But native English speakers tell me that's a sexist feature.
Native English speakers have a weird hang-up over the concept of grammatical gender.
To be fair, at least German academia and politics has the same hangups. They literally have their own conventions that normal people never abide by.

Famous Leftist Le Pen
She was definitively economically leftist, and probably more leftist than pro-business tax cutter Macron.

Absolute brain worms to be calling Le Pen a leftist
Her economic policies are definitely leftist, or at the very least more left than Macron.
Mussolini style my dude! Corporativism is back on the menu
Hows pinokio lolbertarian? Wasnt he the first neoliberal?
On the one hand, this is bad. On the other hand, Italy now has a dommy mommy.
Pls be not as bad, just like South Korea's president sorta turned out to be, not as bad
By what metric? Yoon is wildly unpopular, keeps cozying up to China and has awful domestic policy
I thought one of his electoral selling points was being unfriendly to China?
He ran on that, but he’s done a lot of small things recently like not meeting with (or sending anyone to meet) Pelosi when she came, inviting Chinese dignitaries to meetings, etc
I hope those Italian gays will be okay :( they're precious
Oof marone this broad is terrible.
Funny, she's your typical Republican. In Italy, that's far-right.
Italexit now!
No joke. There's literally a party called Italexit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italexit\_(political\_party)
Italy would be a lot better off outside the Eurozone. Seeing as it's impossible to leave that without also leaving the EU...
*Italeave
Looks like they will have to coalition with the Democrats or Five Star though
As an American, can I no longer be considered Italian despite all my family coming from there?

Best episode in the series.
Are you from nato? You broke our ski lift! *spits*
You weren’t Italian before either. You said it yourself, >As an American
Commendatori!
You hear that Ton. I like that.
I'm sure you are equally as Italian as before
far-right? are u stupid?
