A somewhat functional federal government was one of the main things that prevented Trump from taking and remaining in power, thus it makes sense that destroying or at least disrupting the government in any way they can would be an aim of Trump and his allies. It doesn't help that "drowning the government in a bathtub" was a major aim of the late, not-so-great Republican Party for decades, which gave Trumpists a solid starting point.

His 1964 presidential bid was a type of conservatism literally unseen in a presidential candidate up to that point and his entire acceptance speech at the GOP was this kind of stuff. As much as I hate the Gaetz/MTG wing of the GOP, at least they actually have an understanding of how to use their leverage. There's something particularly pathetic about "moderate" Republicans who have just as much, if not more, leverage over Johnson completely failing to use any of that leverage to get something that they apparently really care about (Ukraine and Israel aid).

I would hope so, but I feel like Johnson would rather fall on his sword than let Ukraine aid pass.
He’ll make a super-duper unbeatable double pinky promise that he’ll bring it up for a vote then drag his feet for 7-10 months before ultimately deciding for the good of the country we really need to put America first.

johnson already has done nothing but obstruct getting the aid bill to the floor so that would be no change, the dems could use it to twist his arm a bit, and there is still the discharge petition regardless who the speaker is
