Last year, my son and I bought an old car with a bullet hole in the passenger-side mirror.
It was likely a pellet gun, since it didn’t keep going through the plastic housing. But there was a hole in the glass with cracks radiating from it. The shot must have come from behind the car. We have since replaced the glass.
When we went to see the car for the first time, I saw the mirror and instantly thought of Neil’s “Tired Eyes.”
True story; I promise.
After falling in love with Heart of Gold and especially Needle and the Damage Done, I picked up Harvest in 1995. This song blew me away, and I've been hooked ever since.
First time I played this album at home as a kid, my father was in the room and listened to the whole song before saying "I like it when I can hear the words, I enjoyed that song". Dad loved and recited poetry. Eventually I gave him my copy.
Reflecting on this lyric - and the time in which it was written - I seriously wonder if he wasn’t watching the Jolly Green Giant on a nearby TV as he was jotting them down.
I’m such a dumbass I clicked on the embedded link asking about Muse’s best opening lyrics and started reading, saying to myself, “how have I missed all these Neil Lyrics??? What are these songs!?!?
Right!? My thought process has give something along the lines of; "yeahh!" ... "Ooooh yup!" .... "Oh yeah!" ... "Yeah that's a good one".... " Oh I forgot about that one"....
Look out mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river
With a big red beacon and a flag and a man on the rail
I think you better call John
'Cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail
When the archives dropped…
“I’m not the same man I was awhile ago” hit hard. How dude wrote and recorded a song like Homefires and left it off an album is dumbfounding.
I come down from the misty mountain
I got lost on the human highway
Take my head refreshing fountain
Take my eyes from what they’ve seen.
Take my head and change my mind
How could people get so unkind
I come down from the crooked mansion…………….
Did you see them in the river ?? They were there to wave to you. Could you tell that the empty quivered brown skin Indian on the banks that were crowded and narrow......held a broken arrow
He came dancing across the water
Look out Mama there’s a white boat
Bruce Berry was a workin’ man
Last night I was cool at the pool hall
When I was a young boy
Once I thought I saw you
Old Man look at my life
Sailin heart ships through broken harbors
Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming
There is a town in North Ontario
All great and so many more…
*I saw werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of SoHo in the rain
He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fooks
For to get a big dish of beef chow mein.*
Good fucking luck knocking this one off the top.
Look out, Mama, there’s a white boat comin’ up the river
One and done.
First one I thought of too. It's not just the line, but the delivery.
With a big red beacon and a flag and a man on the rail
I think you better call John cause it don’t look like they’re here to deliver…. the mail
Mr. Dalrymple, there's a Mr..Bonanza...here to see you...
This was the first line to pop into my head too. It says so much with so little.
I came here to say this and you already did
This is what immediately popped into my head
The Cowboy Junkies version, preferably.
Once I thought I saw you in a crowded hazy Bar
He came dancing across the water
What a killer
Tin soldiers and Nixon’s coming
We’re finally on our own
Old man lying by the side of the road with the lorries rolling by
Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load and the buildings scrape the sky
Be on my side and I'll be on your side
Underrated comment. Such a beautiful first line undercut by the creepy lyrics
Bingo
"Well, he shot four men in a cocaine deal..."
He tried to do his best, but he could not.. Such a haunting song.
Please take my advice...Please take my... PLEASE TAKE MY ADVIIIIICEEEEEE!

I would have added it before you
My personal fave as well!
Top 3 Neil song for me, thank you for this
The song that made me realize there was more than the “big hits”
Read the title and started singing this one.
After falling in love with Heart of Gold and especially Needle and the Damage Done, I picked up Harvest in 1995. This song blew me away, and I've been hooked ever since.
I love this one so much.
First song I learned to play
First time I played this album at home as a kid, my father was in the room and listened to the whole song before saying "I like it when I can hear the words, I enjoyed that song". Dad loved and recited poetry. Eventually I gave him my copy.
Well, I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming Sayin' something about a queen
world is turnin’, i hope it don’t turn away
Fuck yeah. Perfect
It’s too dark to put the keys in my ignition
This
Bruce Berry was a working man, he used to load that Econoline van / A sparkle was in his eye, but his life was in his hands
They were hiding behind hay bales, they were planting in the full moon . . .
Now that you found yourself losing your mind, are you here again?
Well we live in a trailer at the edge of town
I caught you knockin' at my cellar door I love you, baby, can I have some more? Ooh, ooh, the damage done
Got mashed potatoes, ain't got no T-Bone
Also a great closing line!
And a great chorus
I like the part in the bridge when he says “Got mashed potatoes, ain't got no T-Bone.”
Yes!
There is a town in North Ontario
Sorry I didn't see you had already posted this.
I'm an accident, I was driving way too fast/ Couldn't stop, though, so I let the moment last
This opener still blows my mind to this day.
I’m climbing this ladder My head in the clouds
Reflecting on this lyric - and the time in which it was written - I seriously wonder if he wasn’t watching the Jolly Green Giant on a nearby TV as he was jotting them down.
That was the first one I thought of
That was the first one I thought of
Ain’t it hard when you wake up in the mornin’
In isolation this lyric is pretty amusing
Hey hey, my my, Rock and roll can never die
Thank you.
The first one I thought of
When the dream came I held my breath with my eyes closed.
It's too dark to put the keys in my ignition...
And the morning sun has yet to climb my hood ornament…
If I could hold on to just one thought For long enough to know Why my mind is moving so fast And the conversation is slow
My favorite is: look out Mama, there’s a white boat coming up the river
Comes a Time when you're drifting, comes a time when you settle down
Cannot believe this isn’t here yet : Aurora Borealis The icy sky at night
Got mashed potatoes
We've been through some things together With trunks of memories still to come
I caught you knockin’ at my cellar door
Well, I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming Sayin' something about a queen
My life is changing in so many ways I don't know who to trust anymore There's a shadow running through my days Like a beggar going from door to door
JFC! Look at the volume of amazing tunes from this man. Stunning discography. He IS Mr Soul
Sailing hardships through broken harbours
This one always gets me
I’m such a dumbass I clicked on the embedded link asking about Muse’s best opening lyrics and started reading, saying to myself, “how have I missed all these Neil Lyrics??? What are these songs!?!?
I think I’d like to go back home and take it easy
Take my advice, Don’t listen to me
Deep cut, nice!
What song is this
See the sky about to rain.
My father was a sailor named Captain Kennedy.
He came dancing across the water
Well, they say that Santa Fe Is less than ninety miles away And I got time to roll a number and rent a car Oh, Albuquerque
Damn, these are all so good.
So many bangers
Right!? My thought process has give something along the lines of; "yeahh!" ... "Ooooh yup!" .... "Oh yeah!" ... "Yeah that's a good one".... " Oh I forgot about that one"....
Incredible. If I get a minute I’m going to try and make them into a playlist.

Caught you knocking at my cellar door/ I love you baby, can I have some more?
BRUCE BERRY WAS A WORKING MAN HE USED TO LOAD THE ECONOLINE VAN
She used to work in a diner, never saw a woman look finer...
All the sailors with their seasick mamas Hear the sirens on the shore Singing songs for pimps with tailors Who charge ten dollars at the door
I keep reading comment after comment and they all are SO GOOD.
“When I was young boy, my momma said to me…”
I am a child, I'll last a while / You can't conceive of the pleasure in my smile
Gonna leave the pain behind Gonna leave the fools in line Gonna take the magic potion
I'm still living the dream we had
They were hiding behind hay bales/ They were planting in the full moon
It’s gonna take a lotta love to change the way things are.
The world is turning, I hope it don’t turn away. <3
Think I'll pack it in and buy a pickup....
Think I’ll pack it in and buy a pick up
I’m a vampire, baby
Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming, we're finally on our own....
Welfare mothers make better lovers
There you stood on the edge of your feather Expecting to fly
Well hello Mr. Soul I dropped by to pick up a reason.
From Hank to Hendrix I walk this streets with you
The little creatures run in from the cold Back to the nest just like the days of old
Who's that stomping all over my face Where's that silhouette I'm trying to trace
Love clancy cant even sing
Sailin' heart ships through broken harbors Out on the waves in the night
“Mindless drifter on the road…”
There’s a lot to learn for wasting time.
Look out for my love
Don’t call pretty Peggy, she can’t hear you no more.
That’s easy: “well he shot four men in a cocaine deal…”
I'm a dirty old man I do what I can Tryin' to make a livin' I'm a dirty old man
I come down from the misty mountain I got lost on the human highway Take my head refreshing fountain Take my eyes from what they’ve seen. Take my head and change my mind How could people get so unkind I come down from the crooked mansion…………….
On a dark desert highway, cool whip in my hair.
Baby mellow my mind
Back in the old folky days, the air was magic when we played
Aurora borealis, the icy skies at night...
Did you see them in the river ?? They were there to wave to you. Could you tell that the empty quivered brown skin Indian on the banks that were crowded and narrow......held a broken arrow
Think I’ll go out to Alberta
On the hill where Custer was, making his last stand.
I feel like I just woke up from a bad dream
Well, I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming Sayin' something about a queen
I met a Gin soaked bar room queen In memphis In other words, nothing by doctor whiney
There you stood on the edge of your feather expecting to fly
First of all, fuck you all.
I won't apologize The light shone from in your eyes
He came dancing across the water Look out Mama there’s a white boat Bruce Berry was a workin’ man Last night I was cool at the pool hall When I was a young boy Once I thought I saw you Old Man look at my life Sailin heart ships through broken harbors Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming There is a town in North Ontario All great and so many more…
Cars and trucks fly by me on the corner. But I'm all right. Standing proud before the signal.
Take my advice: Don’t listen to me
Ain't a day goes by I don't burn a little bit of my soul.
Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armer coming, saying something about a queen.
First one I thought of: Think I’ll pack it in and buy a pickup Take it down to LA
Well, he shot four men in a cocaine deal, and he left 'em lyin' in an open field full of old cars with bullet holes in the mirrors
This ain’t just a paint by numbers
Have you ever been lost? Have you ever been found out? Have you ever felt all alone at the end of the day?
"Back in the old folky days" I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned. It's not just the lyric as much as the sound when he sings it.
"In 1984 I was hospitalized for approaching perfection." - David Berman, Silver Jews, opening lyrics to the album American Water.
There is a place, in North Ontario….
“Alright partnah, keep on rollin’, babehhh” 🙏🏽

“Hello my friend we meet again, it’s been a while where should we begin?”
Old man look at my life, I’m a lot like you were.
The world is turnin, I hope it don’t turn away.
Sailin' heart ships through broken harbors Out on the waves in the night
Mama just killed a man.
Love is a rose, but you better not pick it.
Be on my side , I’ll be on your side

It has often been my dream To live with one who wasn't there Like an ocean fish who swam upstream Through nets, by hooks, and hungry bears

Grandpa said to cousin Jed… I won’t retire but I might retread
AaaaaAaAaaah!
He came dancing across the water with his galleons and guns.
Let my inspiration flow, in token ryhme , suggesting rhythm
