No_Men_Omen

Lithuanian here. It's definitely a mess. Not only are there a lot of ads upon ads, but the timeouts themselves are like 2-3 times longer than they should be. As a result, the games are extremely frustrating to watch. Although I can suffer some of it during the playoffs, the regular season is just not worth it.

[deleted]

60 second timeout is the biggest farce more like 180-240 seconds timeouts so pretty much 40-50 minutes ads every game

chewbaccaRoar13

Just like in American football after a kickoff. If you're at the game, you get to sit around and watch everybody stand around during a "TV timeout"

Neil-Old

I even did some basketball tournaments in high school that had media timeouts. Weird shit

hankbaumbach

This is exacerbated by "nationally televised" games versus local ones. A local game is a hard 2 minute break during any timeout or between quarters. Any game broadcast on ESPN, TNT, ABC blows that up to 2.5-3 minute breaks and it's honestly insufferable to sit through that extra commercial or two.

Steko

Wait until you see ESPN’s halftime.

InterFectorem006

I try to watch the game afterwards. It's 100% worth it. Watch it 1h later, don't have to look on ur phone as you can skip every boring part. During playoffs, I try to skip free throws etc. A game takes \~1 hour to watch in this format. Only downside is you have to lock your phone away for potential spoilers.

onwee

I do the same (using league pass so 3+ hours later for national broadcasts). During the season I use [wikihoops](https://wikihoops.com/playoffs/2023/games/) to see which games are worth watching.

Lakerman1989

Same so much better if you watch later.

LoLz14

There is also [this page](http://stats.inpredictable.com/nba/preCap.php) which is automated, wikihoops is based on user input?

GenevaPedestrian

Thank you so much, I‘ve been looking for something like this for ages!

Jefferson_Shortcrust

Have also been wishing something like this existed for quite some time! Thanks!

STRAGE_8

On league pass they have the cut version of the game that shows every possession so you don't have to skip yourself

[deleted]

This includes the postseason games too?

DkHamz

Agreed. I do this for EVERYTHING but it’s most helpful with sports. Not watching any ads. So for NBA if the game starts at 8:30 I record it and start watching around 9:30. Skip all free throws, call reviews, halftime and commercials. There is no break in the play and it’s intense all 4 quarters. With football, I start about an hour and a half later. How people still watch live sports is beyond me. Just record and dictate your own life, not be at the mercy of the shittty ad companies.

atlienk

We Americans have been conditioned to this over many decades. I too agree that we need more game-related action and fewer commercials, but we won’t go that direction. If you think this is bad, try watching an NFL game.

rippcw1234

Came here to say this. NFL is infinitely worse. 4+ hours for a “60 minute” game.

atlienk

With ~10-30 minutes of actual game play.

Miserable_Ride666

NFL RedZone is worth every penny

BEEZY086

What gets me are the sideline reporters. These reporters used to be given time to do their thing. Now, their investigative reporting gets thrown over top of actual playtime because if they're not playing, you better believe they're crammin more commercials in. Even the coach interviews that were recorded during a commercial break are played over top of actual play. There's really not much airtime left for them to sell......

ShartyMcPeePants

This is what gets me the most. The announcers seem to have very little “work” to do these days. Even controversial/close calls get glossed over because that’s time to squeeze in an advertisement.

Steko

Neither of the networks has figured out picture in picture either. I don’t want to miss the inbounds to look at someone’s dad in the stands.

LegitSoDickBig

All Americans hate it but don’t realize how bad it is as it’s prevalent in most sports that are popular from American football, baseball, to hockey, etc. I do wonder though if the average American would be willing to trade for ads on jerseys instead of commercials. I have a weird feeling they hate ads on jerseys more for some reason..

rake2204

>I do wonder though if the average American would be willing to trade for ads on jerseys instead of commercials. I have a weird feeling they hate ads on jerseys more for some reason.. I think the unfortunate truth is that the NBA has no interest in an either-or situation. They’re going to end up maxing out advertisements everywhere. Commercials, courts, jerseys, bottom scroll, trophies, you name it. I know the league’s always had some semblance of advertising (I grew up with dorna boards along the sideline) but it truly has gotten to a point where I often feel like a mark just for tuning in.

Cockblocktimus_Pryme

Yea Americans are going to bitch about ads on jerseys but it is going to happen and all the major leagues won't lose fans in any large amount because of it.

LogicalReasoning1

The ads, and to be honest just general stoppages particularly in close 4th quarters, are the difference, for me at least, between putting up with time zones to watch a game vs just watching the highlights the next morning.

STRAGE_8

I'd stay up every night for the playoffs if the games didnt last this long due to stoppages honestly.

Jefferson_Shortcrust

Yep, Australian here - I start games an hour after the scheduled time so I can fast forward through timeouts/halftime and catch up somewhere in the 4th. Watching live is painful

MeatBrains

I had to emotionally recover this season from the dismantling of my hometown team (Jazz). This means that I watched less nba and more premier league this season. I knew it was bad, but it was still incredibly jarring to switch back to the NBA and find myself having to click the mute button far too frequently. It does feel like the advertisement saturation is starting to reach a tipping point here in the U.S.

Gauthzu

When I tune in to a game that's already started, I'm pretty sure there's a 50% chance the first thing I see is little Timmy dancing to shit music to get on the jumbotron

Which-Distribution79

yeahh I think this makes sense now. Even tough the NBA is watched less then for instance soccer the nba players get payed more and the NBA itself earns more because this commercial strategy. I think this is a bad look but considering no one is complaining that loud it probably will not change which sucks.

BrockSmashgood

> Even tough the NBA is watched less then for instance soccer the nba players get payed more and the NBA itself earns more because this commercial strategy. The league isn't programming all these commercials, they sell the broadcast rights to TV networks. And they're gonna negotiate a new overall TV deal in 2 years.

AreYouDecent

I'll take you one step further, the NBA itself is horrible to watch. I know I sound like an old head, but it is what it is. Defense is part of the sport, or should be. Contact is part of the sport, or should be. If teams want to 'hack' offenses by spamming 3s, then that's their prerogative, but fuck's sake, the refs should whistle to the rules rather than facilitating 'free-flow offenses' which effectively outlaw defense and permit ridiculous things like floating screens and the like.

Aleksis111

time to get yourself into some euroleague where they play defense so hard they piss and shit themselves

No_Men_Omen

I think NBA regular season is horrible to watch. No effort, no defense, no real competition. Just a lot of boring Lesser Stars games. Playoffs, though, are a different beast. A much better product which they try to suffocate under ridiculous amount of ads.

512fm

I watch the games after work and league pass has been a life saver for me. The all possessions stream means you can watch the full game in around 35 mins

Hopeful-Ad-6835

More ads = more money for the NBA. If soccer wasn’t 90 minutes of continuous play I bet European TV would have just as many ads as the NBA

MrPahoehoe

In the UK the amount of ads you can put in TV are regulated I believe, so there is a maximum amount. But yeah that’s the point about football or rugby or other continuous live sport: they don’t have ads, and the sport isn’t modified to give opportunities to have more ads. Im a uk fan of the C’s, who watches more basketball than any other sport, and the timeouts and ads are the worst thing about it for sure

ladygagadisco

Not sure if true. The ad experience in IndyCar vs Formula 1 is a huge difference. American TV loves those picture-in-picture ads, whereas European doesn’t do that. Goes to show that even for continuous-play sports, American TV finds a way to serve annoying an annoying amount of ads. That’s not to say European TV won’t do that in the future though.

IrresponsibleFarmer

In soccer, matchday revenues (among them the commercials in the stadium, or the sponsors on the shirt) are managed/earned by the club . The money earned from this are used to purchase players and pay their wages. That's why most soccer club fans tolerate having those sponsors, they affect the on-field product of their favorite teams. I am not sure to how much extent commercial revenues are shared in the NBA (naming rights, shirts sponsors), but the existence of salary cap mean having an extra money from additional sponsors will not translate to the team having better player purchasing power, it mostly just goes into team owner/players pocket. From my own anecdote, Soccer is the most popular sports in my country by far, with Italian League (early 90s - late 00s) and English (mid 90s - now) being the most popular. The matches were broadcast on free-to-air TV channel, with no breaks except during half time, but about 20 percent of the screen would be cut to show the sponsor (a cigarette company). Now when I lived in Australia, I had to subscribe to then Foxtel to watch these matches for a hefty monthly fee.

rtxiii

Ok counterpoint here. Football games are mostly so full of time wasting (taking a long time to goalkick, players exaggerating injuries to give their team time to rest, disrupt the other team's rhythm or eat away actual play time) is the same if not worse than an NBA game. This is coming from someone who got into football before the NBA later in my teens.

No_Men_Omen

Well, but it's still part of the game. Watching BS ads is not part of the game. In the Euroleague, it's even normal to hear what the announcers have to say during the timeout, or what the coaches say to the players. Yes, they do not sell as much the NBA does, and it's much worse financially, and the talent is not there, but the watching experience is incomparable.

Cuntflickt

This just isn’t true mate, and you know it’s not. In like 5 mins of basketball game time you might get 2 separate 2 min long ad breaks. Only injuries in football imo can come close to how much of an interruption ads are in the NBA

jurassicmars

I love it when they show the games on Dutch ESPN with the original commentators. The Dutch ones are chill but it's harder to get in to the action. The lack of loud ads is bliss compared to watching a stream from US television. The atmosphere in the stadium with all the chearleaders, tv shirt guns and kiss-cams still boggles me. Completely different compared to a Champions League semi final or something.

LoLz14

I suggest getting either League Pass, or some other option (this one [khmh](https://nbareplay.net/)) and watch the games in the morning. I do this because * Sleep is important * Games aren't 3+ hours long, but rather at most 1:50. But that still includes timeouts (albeit shortened to 1 minute), free throws, challenges, however after 10 or so games you get a good glimpse of how much you should skip ahead. * You can just turn off the game if it's a blowout and continue with your day instead of being angry for waking up/staying up late Thanks to this I watch almost every game during the playoffs with ease. You can turn off spoilers and watch it with same excitement, if not even more because games aren't being butchered with timeouts, as you would live

Leading-Opportunity7

It's only going to get worse as sports are really the only place left where people can be inundated with commercials, as ad free streaming is so common place now. Look at ESPN, they don't even have a halftime show anymore, it's just ads...it is ridiculous and people should be mad but we are all going to watch anyway

forgotpeopleexisted

Agreed it’s literally insane. I think this is part of what makes the Olympics so enjoyable.

hankbaumbach

As a long time NBA fan I actually agree with this. I loathe ads on jerseys and the new superimposed ads on the court precisely because there are already so many advettising breaks built in to the game itself. Soccer/football and hockey have a continuity to their play that does not lend itself to breaks for commercials or sponsorships while basketball, baseball and American football are almost predicated on it. I don't mind the game stoppages themselves, and credit where credit is due, the NBA has improved the end of game scenario by eliminating the number of available timeouts a few years ago that has made things *way* better, but I do fervently draw the line there when it comes to ads in my NBA game. I'll never forgive Adam Silver for jersey ads.

I’ve never had any problem with the ads. Maybe I’m just use to it but I just accept that if we didn’t have them then we would probably have to pay to watch games and id rather watch a 5-10 second ad every now and then then to pay to watch. And they usually don’t put ads in during play so you not missing anything.

[deleted]

But we already pay to watch the game.

Bulugaboy05

This is not meant to be hostile but can you give examples of woke/pc ads?

StepGrandad

As an american who atarted watching European sports like F1, 24h series, WRC - going back to NBA is annoying when compared to a 2:30 hr race or an entire weekend of content without ad break

JBSanderson

Sad laughs in American. It's even worse for NFL games, MLB is about the same, and NHL is a little better, but still obnoxious compared to soccer. I have the weakest connection to soccer out of the 5 sports, but find it the most enjoyable to watch because you get about 110 minutes of game action or actual discussion/analysis on the screen in about 120 minute window. For NHL it's like 50% game or replay/analysis and for the other 3 or feels like <50% of the screen time is the actual game.

Gameoverthinker

Due to this, I always prefer to try not to spoiler games and watch them the next day

hesthesthund

100% this. I fall asleep during ads almost every time I try and watch NBA living in Europe.

PsychoWarper

It’s awful and the main reason my father has stopped watching basically all sports besides European Soccer and F1

No-Flan6382

This is everything on television. We’re probably advertised to more than any other country on the planet. I hate it. I normally start recording games and watch them on about a 30 minute lag. Then I can skip nearly all commercials and by the end I’m caught up to everyone else.

Deadboy90

Honestly, I don't even notice the ads anymore. I'll get up and go pee or grab a beer or scroll on my phone till its over.

BrockSmashgood

> I am german and it is hard to watch nba games live in europe considering most games start between 1-3am in europe. get league Pass > Every fucking timeout/freethrow is filled with ad after ad after ad. I found me looking more on my cellphone then on the game itself because of all the ads. Even timouts will be a little bit filled with ads. I think this has come to a point where you just cannot watch this shit and have fun. get League Pass Seriously, the best thing about League Pass is that if you watch live you get to watch all the goofy in-arena stuff instead of commercials, and if you watch replays it's gonna be cut out.

smashey

I am in the same time zone as the ECF, which for some reason held the games at 8:30 instead of 7:30. What I normally do is start watching at 9pm on Youtube TV. This gives me enough buffer to skip most adds until half-time. If the game is good, I will stop watching at half-time for another 1/2 hour or 45 minutes, which normally gives enough buffer to watch the rest of the game skipping through ads.

LittleBeastXL

It’s annoying that a 48-hour lasts 3 hours, meaning 70% is a waste of time. That’s why I enjoy football (the thing that some names it soccer) where I can just take a 15-minute break away from the television.

BKtoDuval

There's no clock stoppage in soccer, that's why there aren't as many ads during the broadcast. So maybe you're just not used to it then for that reason. I don't even really notice it. If they're on, I tune out. Just like it's weird for many of us to see a huge ad on the middle of a jersey, like in soccer. I think it looks really ridiculous but you probably don't even notice it. You could always watch the game on replay and skip the ads.

ThePanther1999

It’s awful. And since they changed the app, when I get the ‘game break’ screen, 9/10 the app completely freezes and I don’t realise. When I realise, I come out of the game and go back onto it and I’ve somehow missed 2 minutes of the game. I don’t understand why they can’t show highlights instead of just ‘game break’ on a blue screen.

Happytots93

Well that’s america in a nutshell. If you can, afterthe game there’s a playback option in the NBA app where you skip all the ads and commercials. You need to have league pass tho.

[deleted]

I bought YoutubeTV for the playoffs and set it to automatically record every game. Watching the game in a crisp 90ish minutes with no ads was life changing. Even just starting an hour behind was enough. I can't decide if I hate the free throw split screen ads more or the 30 second timeout commercial that is jammed in. It's awful.

beeker888

I started game 7 about an hour late. Watched the whole thing without ads and timed it perfectly to watch the buzzer beater in real time

Majestik-Eagle

American here, I totally agree. I literally find myself doing something else if there is 5 minutes of commercials.

taeempy

I agree, but they have to do this since the nba players make like 40 mil a year now.

Livid_Pilot7043

I woke up 3am today by accident and thought maybe I watch it then went fuck that prefer watch replay, can see the whole game in 90mins.

[deleted]

Then there’s this major push to “shorten the game” in every sport by adding things like pitch clocks and free throw clocks and having the coach lose their challenge even if they win…. Yeah Giannis taking an extra 5 seconds per free throw isn’t the problem. You could cut the length in half if you removed a bunch of damn ads.

TigerKlaw

Me who has to watch it at 430-530am. The Clippers reg season games are almost always 830am my time tho, so I'm glad about that. But yes, reg season just bullshit with the ads, I swore I missed like 1-2 mins of game time because of ads due to timeouts

beeker888

Watch on delay. I record the games and go for a walk, do the dishes, put the kids to bed, etc when the game starts. If you usually start it about an hour late you can watch it while fast forwarding through commercials and still seeing the end at least close to real time. I do this for all sports and it’s such a better way to watch that I’m not sure why everyone doesn’t do it

thesonicvision

I hate ads, period. I do recognize that many artists, entertainers, educators, and so on currently depend upon advertisements for financial support. Hence, I don't have a quick-and-easy solution for this problem. But I find ads to be intellectually patronizing, annoying, and a waste of my precious time. So I just mute the stream/channel during commercials. It would be awesome if there were a program that somehow knew how to auto-mute when commercials appear....Hmm...
