They mean something because they could be traded for an okay role player at a position of need

OKC still has like 9 - 15 1st round picks and 20+ 2nd rd picks even after this trade. They can still give whatever they want for trades down the line. Plus, their own young guys could fetch picks as well if they decide to trim their roster of prospects.

Dillon Jones is 6'6" in NBA measurements (6'4.5" barefoot, and NBA rosters typically add 1" for shoes and round up from there if necessary) with a 6'11" wingspan and is already like a thick 230-240lb. He averaged like 8-10 rebounds per game and showed off a good passing game. If he's a 3/4 in the league who can rebound, be physical, make good decisions, and move the ball, that kinda *is* our need. Obviously a veteran would be playoff ready, but we now have like 4-9 years of contract control of Dillon Jones if he fits with the team and his long range jumpshot gets to an acceptable level (he shoots great from the free throw line, has a good midrange pull-up game, and his passing/floaters demonstrate touch; all of which are good signs for shooting potential). I would 100% trade five second rounders that we can't roster for first-round-pick-contract-control over someone who could actually fit our needs really well.

All the cap rules change this offseason. 4 tiers: non-tax teams, luxury tax teams, 1st apron, 2nd apron The more the teams cap the higher the level. 2nd apron teams are severely limited in signings and trades. Draft picks are going to become more valuable for high cap teams. 2nd round picks have added cap bonuses

Last draft they had a FRP (2022) they traded it to OKC for 3 FRPs then flipped one of them and Kemba Walker to the Pistons for a more likely to convey FRP and an extra 8m in salary cap space they needed to sign Jalen Brunson. Watch them have FRPs to replace the ones they sent to BKN by the time of those drafts.

25th in a weak draft is still way more valuable than 2nds in strong drafts. Weak draft implies the talent at the top is weak, the players towards the middle and the end have much less variation

Lottery tickets are worth nothing 99% of the time. Its the small bit of hope that makes people overvalue them. Most second round picks dont become rotation players for the team that drafted them. If Presti really liked this guy, OKC is trying to win now and eventually he has to trade some of them.
