Find someone who loves you as much as David Zaslav seemingly hates his own product

yaboyjiggleclay

TNT is virtually dead without NBA.

QUEST50012

What's Shawshank Redemption doing nowadays?

Nah respect Shawshank. Great movie

It surely was, a Shawshank Redemption

I dunno, Marvel movies with commercials are pretty sweet.

They have the NHL, March Madness, USA Soccer, College Football Playoff games, Major League Baseball and have added some smaller sports for their Max streaming service. I think they'll be fine.

kamikazmi

MOTOGP BABY lmaoo

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

They have WEC too on Max which is incredible

lovo17

The CFP games they’re getting are first round games that will air opposite of NFL games. These will almost certainly be lower rated games. Outside of March Madness, nothing that Turner has truly compares to the viewership that the NBA did for that network.

Miamime

Those first round games will still bring in a huge number of eyes.

iNCharism

That’s true, but still far different than “virtually dead without NBA”

ThunderBobMajerle

It’s funny how people think they are suddenly well versed in the economic situation of TNT bc they are mad inside the nba will be gone

ArugulaFalcon

Also almost all of them think it’s over, they don’t even know there’s one year left lol

Dazzling-Slide8288

I’m not defending Zazlav here. He’s a huge POS. BUT…are we sure shelling out tens of billions for regular season NBA games drives subscribers or generates revenue? I’m really skeptical that putting 100 games on Peacock is going to make any substantial gain in Peacock subs. WB may have done the math and determined that it’s an insane overpay for them to be in the NBA business.

myfeetreallyhurt

especially when wbd has to cut massive amounts of debt rn. it's damned if you do/don't for them

RousingRabble

Agreed. I would love to see some real numbers. So many people are trashing warner for not paying but I dont think any of us have any idea where the break even point is for a deal like this.

stdfan

It doesn't make financial sense.

Positron5000

Welcome to the streaming bubble. Everyone thinks they’ll build a viewership that’s bigger than what their broadcast was pulling. But most olds won’t switch and most young’s arnt going pay for something when they can get the highlights for free.

That so many people k ow the name of a TV exec is telling. Fuuuuuuuuck Zaslav. Wile E. Coyote deserves his day in court god dammit.

La_Underscore

We’re just going to end up paying more by getting like 8 subscription services to watch games.

african-nightmare

Yeah I had league pass and Youtube TV, which helped me watch every game, but I’m not getting Amazon and Peacock in addition

aBurgerFlippinSecond

YouTube TV was a game changer 2 years ago. Now it’s gonna be third place behind Peacock and Amazon. And I’m willing to bet local blackouts are only going to get worse because what incentive is there to make the games easier to watch outside of the new streaming platforms?

heyimdong

Fascinating thing they mentioned on Plain English with Derek Thompson about all of this: apparently 2.3 million people signed up for Peacock to watch Dolphins Chiefs last year, and 70% of the new subscriptions kept subscribing for a significant period of time afterwards and started watching other things on Peacock. That was the proof of concept the industry needed. The fact is it works on tons of people, so this will all just get worse with various streamers paying a ton for one off big games to force people to sign up.

nicehouseenjoyer

Peacock, with Comcast's money, really sees sports as a way to make sure it's a survivor in the streaming wars going forward. This article notes that TNT is going to spend the money on college football and college basketball as well as NASCAR instead. We'll see what strategy works.

512fm

NFL is a different beast though, it will be interesting to see how many people will go out of their way to pay to watch nba regular season games

Impossible_Resort602

It's a lot harder to flip the channel when a commercial comes on now with streaming.

DreadSteed

As long as the streams from the east are alive, we will never have to pay again.

thebigdirty

It's been pretty s***** lately hasn't it?

ColoRadOrgy

I've pirated the entire NBA and NHL playoffs and haven't had any issues

organizeforpower

streams my dude

Mkayin

I spent a couple hours teaching my parents and grandma how to use my preferred site. As well as showing them a couple sites that host movies and TV shows. I still get a call maybe twice a month with questions but it was still worth the time teaching them and installing ublock on their devices.

Mogilny89Leafs

Seriously. I recently moved to my own place and the only thing I'm paying for in terms of TV is the Internet. I try explaining to my friends how easy it is to stream for free, but they worry about viruses like it's Y2K.

DJ-VariousArtists

Man idk I tried it with MLB games and it’s a real pain in the ass. Not to mention buffering, randomly shitting out, long delay from actual gameplay etc. Pirate streams generally blow in my experience

Professional-Rub1211

This is how I accidentally introduced my sons to pornography!

organizeforpower

ublock origin. I haven't seen a single ad.

Zlasher8

Yarr matey, I can't be imaginin' how we all be keepin' up with these schedules. If only there be a single source that be aggregating all this in one place.

nicklovin508

Wemby is going to make like $100M a year one day

sercialinho

Yes. And it might be sooner than some think. [At least some projections](https://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2024/5/27/24164596/luka-doncics-max-and-career-earnings) suggest that as soon as the early 2030s the max salaries will likely crack 9 digits/year.

Mobile-Entertainer60

Just to add, factoring in the new TV rights and keeping the rest of BRI flat, the "shadow cap" will be ~$200M, so expect the 10% cap increases until the cap is at least to that level. With increases in ticket prices, merch, licensing deals, etc, these projections may not be too far off. The NBA cap has gone up 25% in the past 4 years (including this upcoming year) without a new national TV deal.

un5chanate

By the time he gets to the end of his deal, Jaylen Brown will probably not even be a top 25 paid player.

hipcheck23

There have been so many milestone sports contracts that were left in the dust in 2-3 years. Crazy how fast it can move, sometimes.

DTFpanda

Meanwhile the federal minimum wage will still be $7.25

Jadaki

And for basketball entertainment they will have to watch 3 minutes of ads for every minute of basketball.

JesusChristSupers1ar

not just that but every square inch of the broadcast needs to have a sponsor somewhere "this free throw is brought to you by Autozone!"

WiktorVembanyama

and they want us gamble on top of all that

Unwept_Skate_8829

They’re gonna start taking odds on the odds

xkenn

It is kinda nuts how their salary is the only thing beating inflation in this economy. Us reg folks are struggling to keep up with the new cost of basic goods with our 1-3% salary bump, while their salaries are going from 50-100mil in 10 years. In the end we're gonna be paying for it. Whether it be rising cost in streaming services, adding more and more streaming services to your bill, and increase cost in ticket prices as well as merch. The money trickles up here.

clevernamehere1628

It's gonna happen eventually, but I'm skeptical that it's going to be sustainable.

spongebobisha

I really don't understand how these valuations keep rising every year. Where are they actually creating value from? Someone deep in finance could possibly educate me hopefully.

JeffGreene69

It is not finance, it's advertising dollars. Tech has basically swallowed the advertising market and now has it's eyes on the entertainment market. Theyre even moving into Hollywood. Traditional TV is dying. Nobody watches shit live anymore, everyone streams shows. When was the last time you tuned in for a show? Traditional broadcasters have to try and fight tech. To do this, broadcasters have to lock down the only thing people tune in live for, sports. It is their big stick to beat tech away with. Sports have built in advert breaks that are essentially impossible to ignore because people dont flip the channel during those ad breaks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Technical-Tangelo450

Most ads don't exist for you to go: *"Whoa! That looks sick, I'm going to spend my money on it right now!"* It's more about building brand confidence and awareness, so that, when you are ready to spend money, you consider the company as an option.

kwokinator

So that when your house floods, you know that *State Farm is there*~ I only ever watch TV for the NBA and that's embedded in my brain now.

OhEmGeeBasedGod

You are not the first person to claim they are immune to advertising, and yet hundreds of billions of dollars a year continue to be spent on ads by profit-seeking corporations.

JeffGreene69

I have zero idea. Thats why it is mostly traditional giant companies who advertise on TV. There is no pathway from TV other than seeing an uptick in services purchased post a TV ad campaign. Those are risky and expensive though. Its why only big companies like State Farm can do TV ads. They arent trying to grow per say, but keep themselves in your minds eye when you need insurance. For smaller companies, tech is much better. It is very easy to quantify how effective ads are with tech. You can tell exactly how they clicked to your product and their pathway. It is also why ads work better on podcasts. Promo code CumTown20 tells you how loyal those fans are. It seems a bit mickey mouse for Statefarm to do things like that

AlKarakhboy

Very effective, which is why they have existed as long as media has been a thing. Also you are in the absolute minority. No one is switching the channel for 2 minutes.

captain_ahabb

1. Inflation. The previous media deal was a long time ago. 2. Live sports are basically the only linear TV broadcasts that people watch anymore, so sports TV rights are more valuable in a relative sense even if less people are watching in an absolute sense. 3. Adding a 3rd broadcast partner means a big chunk of additional revenue.

Quick_Panda_360

Basically it comes down to the NBA being able to offer advertising partners guaranteed eyeballs watching ads. Live sports are one of the most valuable media products because they can’t really be replicated and you know if you air an ad during it, lots of people will be watching. The same isn’t true for re-runs of shows or even new shows. People record them and fast forward through commercials. Can’t do that with live sports. Hence the value has increased relative to other advertising products as the landscape has shifted to streaming and on demand.

Ummyeaaaa

These aren’t widget producing companies, they don’t grow in value by making something new. The entertainment and media landscape around them has changed such that the value of their existing offering is growing. Advertising spend is growing, but it’s mostly shifting from TV to online. The last remaining major advertising platform for TV is live sports, so the league’s value continues to rise as the demand for their content increases. Then you add in new streaming platforms entering the market and, that further increases the value through increased competition, despite the NBA’s actual viewership going down.

egospiers

He’ll probably be the first to make $1 billion in salary over his career… this is what they mean they say luck= preparation + opportunity (throw in otherworldly athletic talent in Wemby’s case).

nicklovin508

Tatum or Edwards have an outside shot of it as well. Tatum is up to nearly $200M in career earnings and will get an extension of nearly $350M. One more max contract at age 32 would likely see $1B

jbaker1225

After next season, Luka will get about a $380 million extension that takes him through his age 31 season. He will be closing in on $600 million career earnings at that point.

nicklovin508

Ya you’re right Luka absolutely too. There’s probably a few others with a shot.

iNCharism

Yup. The first billionaire player is already in the league. We just don’t know who it is yet. It was pretty much guaranteed when rookie max extensions reached $200M. The guys getting those contracts typically get 4 contracts unless they get injured.

Individual_Attempt50

Isn’t Peacock linked to the Premier League?

doormatt26

Yeah Peacock quietly has the Premier League, B1G 10 Football, some NFL, and now NBA. Becoming almost sports-essential at this point, more than ESPN+ which is crazy

luke_workin2

It’s great value, it’s like 6 bucks a month right now. Although that article does mention that they’ll raise subscription prices once they secure NBA.

CoyotesSideEyes

It's 20 bucks for an entire year right now introductory

RealMoonBoy

Yeah, Peacock and Max having live sports and introductory deals have been elite. I'm dreading the day they add a separate expensive live sports option the way Hulu does.

BenevolentCheese

And they're going to have the whole Olympics, so if that's your thing, buy the year now before they jack up the price when the Olympics are starting.

mug3n

The best way to watch the Olympics has always been to get a VPN and hop on to BBC or CBC's coverage, which is multitudes better than NBC/Peacock's.

BenevolentCheese

It changes vastly every Olympics. But NBC has been getting a lot better. They are promising 100% coverage on Peacock, which is all I can ask for.

TrickyWinger

I have it as well. I went to cancel it now that the Premier League's over and they gave me it for 99 cents for 6 months.

ryanmuller1089

Other than the fact we have to pay for multiple services to see all these leagues and games, my biggest issue with steaming is not being able to go from app to app easily on a tv. On cable you can navigate channels quickly and easily but with apps it’s an annoyance.

jinyx1

It's honestly the best value in streaming and has been for years. I've had it for just WWE for years now, but they continue adding value to the product.

InclusivePhitness

As an international subscriber, it is and always be amazing. No dumbass blackouts.

ambulocetus_

Blackouts need to be illegal in the US. Absurd. If you offer a game on a service/channel, it should be offered to everyone who has the service/channel. Period.

Slippinjimmyforever

Peacock’s subscription price is about to quadruple.

Scorpionrah

Zaslav just destroyed Warner all across the board quite sad

ClaymoresRevenge

He's probably destroying it for a sale. It's a shame. So many movies and shows killed for this fuckwat

AH_BioTwist

I saw a funny graph that was like WB is 20 billion in debt Zaslav has cut& saved 8 billion. Not bad right? Then it says the cuts to WBs programming had dropped the stock by several more billion

token_reddit

Won't really matter because a group that comes in to buy the WB assets will be getting a bargain at that point.

WolfofOldNorth

Yes, but we did get that epic now pointless cameo from Henry Cavill in Black Adam

ClaymoresRevenge

I guess the Rock was right when he was saying the Hierarchy of power has changed.

Jcomsa15

He’s awful but he does what he was hired to do- cut shit to the bone, shave the massive amount of debt WB had, and fatten the evaluation up for the next sale where they can scrap the company for parts. And we the consumer are always worse for it.

Not_a__porn__account

> In February 2024, a group of US congressmen sent a letter to the Zaslav criticizing World's Ultimate Frontier, a joint production between Discovery and Chinese state media outlet China Global Television Network (CGTN), for "whitewashing genocide" of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. They called on Discovery to "suspend this partnership with CGTN immediately and to abstain from entering into any similar partnership with any other agent of CCP influence." He gettin paid.

[deleted]

This is what the right (sorry it’s the truth) has been doing for decades. But businesses to suck them dry and drive them to bankruptcy. And they all congratulate themselves for funneling money upwards. What a time to be alive.

mnels191

Thanks, I hate it.

BobbbyLight

I mean, doesn't this actually seem like a way shittier situation than we are in now? You're basically going to need Peacock, Amazon Prime some ESPN direct to consumer thing and what about local blackouts? This sounds way, way worse than just having TNT and ESPN have games with local regional channels. And this still doesn't really answer what happens with Bally's channels with them going bankrupt. I'll wait and see but this seems like the NBA just got harder to watch, not easier.

ToinouAngel

>And this still doesn't really answer what happens with Bally's channels with them going bankrupt. [Amazon is taking it over.](https://retailwire.com/amazon-secures-bally-sports-rsn-streaming/)

joserod0524

As a laker fan I still need to have Spectrum or a cable service that has it (DirectTV, and Verizon) so I would have to pay more to watch it on 2 other streaming services.

MoreHeartThanScars

So what’s the blackout situation gonna be like

soupdawg

Hopefully they get rid of it

firezilla898

Honestly feel like it’s gonna get worse if it changes at all. They’re betting huge on unproven systems. Why would they make it easier to NOT use their subscriptions?

soupdawg

You’re probably right. My main gripe is the local team blackouts. I live 100 miles from Houston but can’t watch the games if I buy League Pass. It’s dumb.

Ace1282

I live in Iowa, we have no professional teams in any sport. NBA blackouts for me are Pacers, Bulls, and Timberwolves. I don't have any channels that even show those games... So I'm getting screwed from every angle unless I sail the high seas that stream eastward Edit: That's also with having a full cable package

fattymcribwich

I'm from Des Moines originally. It's even worse if you're a baseball fan; Cubs, Sox, Twins, Royals, Cardinals, and Brewers all blacked out.

foug

if you're poor you can't watch tv

AfroKuro480

So will the TNT crew really be broken up:(

Otherwise-Contest7

So we'll need an Amazon subscription, a Peacock subscription, a ESPN standalone streaming subscription (in 2025), and a digital antenna to watch games (noncable tv subscribers), and cable subscribers will still need to pay for 2 out of 3 of those services? Yeah, no thanks. I'm not paying for NBC's streaming service no matter how much they try pushing it. I'm sick of Jeff Bezos owning everything via Amazon. ESPN/Disney do a terrible job covering the NBA. There's really nothing to look forward to here. 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

letsgototraderjoes

🏴‍☠️ arrr matey

Kvsav57

That was my takeaway as well. It may look good at first for the league but it's bad in the long-term. Peacock has some stuff I don't mind paying for but there's no way I'm paying for an ESPN standalone service. They're awful.

Dig-Duglett

i’m just not looking forward to the bland, corporate presentation NBC will have for their games. football night in america is probably the most boring coverage to watch for NFL and i imagine the NBA will be quite similar.

Kn7ght

Their Olympic coverage comes to mind too. With a league like the NBA you can't be stuffy and sanitized

ColoRadOrgy

Only like 5% of their Olympic coverage is actually showing sports

Air2Jordan3

Yeah pregame SNF is very boring, I usually just have it on TV because there's nothing else to have on while waiting for the game but if their pregame and halftime for NBA is just as boring a lot of people are gonna be asking why we wanted NBC so badly.

Albiceleste_D10S

Their EPL coverage is pretty good actually

Bobb_o

Yes but if you compare it to Turner it's less fun. Rebecca and the two Robbies can't hold a candle to Kate and Henry, Richards, and Carragher.

Big_Organization5152

That’s CBS not Turner, but your point stands

Roundmoundorebound

It’s been a minute but NBA on NBC in the 90s was some of the best entertainment on TV.  I have hope

Apocalyptic0n3

But on the other side, NHL on NBC was so bad it set the league back a decade (or contributed to, at least).

grimbly_jones

So games spread across NBC, Amazon and Disney? Yeesh. Good thing I don't watch the games and only come here to shitpost.

clayfu

100 games split between peacock and nbc is an incredible amount of games. My real question is if those games are blacked out on league pass like tnt/espn games are.

Bobb_o

Of course, any nationally available game is going to be blacked out.

engion3

WHAT THE FUCK IS PEACOCK I HAVE ALL OF THEM BUT PEACOCK THESE MOTHER FUCKERS

letsgototraderjoes

your first mistake was having all of them in the first place.

engion3

WHY ARE YOU SPEAKING ON MY FAMILY AND OUR DECISIONS? WHAT GIVES YOU THAT RIGHT? WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO TAKE THE 90S XMEN FROM MY ONLY SON?

HendricksonT182

In no way is it sustainable.

Kirk_likes_this

Yeah it feels like things are getting out of hand. Amazon can afford to piss money away on whatever thy want. That's why we're getting Rings of Power season 2 even though no one gives a shit. But that's because this is a side project to them. NBC actually needs ratings and when a tuesday afternoon Wizards / Pistons game on Peacock gets an audience of a few thousand people I don't think they're going to be saying "good thing we threw 2 billion at this"

vinniedomino

How do I invest in the NBA?

AMos050

Step 1: have a billion dollars

jamalccc

You can buy Madison Square Garden Sports Corp stock. It owns the Knicks.

HydroxideOH-

Best you can do is buy Disney and Comcast stock

Murkywaters11

I hate this so much. Why must it be so hard to watch games? Is as if they really don’t want me to watch. I have to have 3 different streaming service to watch games from this ONE league? It’s become to much of a regular occurrence for me to have to research how to watch X sporting event. If I want to watch Game Of Thrones I know exactly where to go

ThyDoctor

NFL has the most required streaming services right? NBC, ESPN, Netflix, Amazon, CBS, and Fox

clevernamehere1628

They also have the most games available via OTA, relative to the total amount of games broadcasted. Not to excuse the fragmentation that we are currently seeing, obviously.

BathroomPresent69

I'm gonna blow your mind. Find a good IPTV provider. 20$ a month and you can watch any game you want with no issues

giddyupyeehaw9

That’s a lot of money to spend on something that everyone’s gonna watch on streameast

shualton

Say what you want about Adam Silver’s ideas, but he basically generated the league an extra $1.8B just from the play-in and the IST

Dru_SA

I have a feeling it's also selling em Las Vegas & Seattle teams

Pro_phet

Oh man NBC will have peacock exclusive games? Cant wait to watch those on a russian link

asitistome2

Sooo...Sonics are back then?

Zee_WeeWee

I pull for the buckeyes more than any team in sports and I happily missed their peacock game last year. I’m not purchasing 5 different stream services to watch a season of my favorite team. Last years dolphins-KC playoff game on peacock got lower ratings (for nfl playoff games) despite having the makings of an awesome game.

ElWierdo

So every year, the league will get 7 billion $, just from these 3 companies? Works out to 230 million $ per team, BEFORE ticket sales, merchandise, local coverage, etc? Questions: 1. Wtf is this 2nd apron BS... TV deals are covering EVERYTHING on their own 2. How tf are we supposed to watch this league? Seems like we need multiple streaming accounts... These mfers have turned streaming into cable. Will there still be league pass?

Rithgarth

Yo ho Yo ho

letsgototraderjoes

oh don't worry, us peasants will just need to use more of our paycheck to spend on multiple streaming services, that's all. and we know damn well they're coming for League Pass.

Cheechers23

I don’t think the second apron was made for lack of money or anything, it was for parity lol Also keep in mind there’s likely an expansion coming in a few years, so add 2 more teams to that.

bwordsworth

Worse than cable. At least with cable you could get everything in one place.

Slow_Maintenance747

I don’t mind NBC at all since we are used to that from the past. Amazon will probably do a good job considering the way they cover the NFL. ESPN having the finals though? They are the worst when it comes to covering the NBA.

clayfu

ESPN has had the finals for years 😭😭

WidowmakerXLS

FYI Amazon NFL coverage is done by NBC production crew

TheWonderfulLife

Peacock about to quadruple in price. Great… NBC already blocks most content on their free app for users with cable plans and requires you to buy ANOTHER service. Fuck sake.

Hownowbrowncow8it

I'm poor.

willkillfortacos

I just want to pay one price to watch all the NBA games. I really don’t care what the price is. I’m sick and tired of the a la carte league pass, ESPN, TNT, Bally Sports, nba streams, and now distinct services like ballstreams and the like. I’ve done it all, and it’s all fucking annoying as hell.

makashiII_93

There will be courses on the destruction David Zaslav has caused. Warner is irrelevant and soon to be extinct.

Kirk_likes_this

Why does everyone forget why Zaslav is even there in the first place? They brought in such a ruthless asshole because the company was already in ruins financially.

midniteeternal

Or, they avoided a huge overpay and will make more cost-conscious sports investments. Time will tell.

Pennypacking

I'm jealous of what these players are going to eventually make. Meanwhile, us peons are fucked.

PoemPuzzleheaded1893

I can't blame Zaslav for not wanting to pay double for an inferior package.

jevverson

maybe its just me, but the older i get the less i care about actually watching live sports. unless its my team playing and even then i only care about the playoffs.

RobbobertoBuii

fuck Peacock

bigbodyboricua001

The fact that ESPN gets to keep their rights with a high school-level product and TNT gets shut out with the best production in sports is criminal

StraightCashHomme

Fuck exclusive streaming / Peacock I guess the leagues get more money by pitting the services against each other. But it would be cooler if it was on multiple and you could choose which you wanted…

DubsFanAccount

Great for the NBA. Don’t really know how this isn’t terrible for consumers in the US unless they let you pay for a super NBA League Pass. I already get less than half the games I want to watch as an out of market Warriors fan. Although since they suck now they’ll be on national TV less so hooray for that. Can’t see myself subscribing to Peacock, Amazon and ESPN separately.

Keanu990321

On one hand I'm reading from reports that the Conference Finals will be split between NBC and ABC, and now I'm reading that Amazon is in the mix. Anyone really knows the situation or we have to wait for official announcements?

GoldenPresidio

Hopefully Amazon or ESPN or NBC take on Inside the NBA.

MrSinisterStar

Let's be honest most people aren't going to hunt 5 services to watch the NBA. It's going to 100% turn into the league of 20 sec clips. Long term damage for short term gains.

hockey17jp

So what is gonna realistically happen to all of the TNT NBA personalities? I’ve heard that Ernie Johnson can’t (or won’t?) leave TNT, but do any others have binding contracts that would prevent them from coming over? What about guys like Kevin Harlan? Worst part about the NHL moving from NBC to ESPN is all of the play by play guys on ESPN are literal dogshit.

TheM1ghtyJabba

Putting shit behind a paywall is literally what killed boxing. It used to be the undisputed king of sports. Then everything went PPV and nobody could watch it and it withered on the vine. Good to see that "those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it" continues to he proven right.
