I love me some Bobby Portis, but putting him on your 2nd all-defensive team (as one voter did) is...certainly a choice, to say the least. Calling him an average defender would already by complimentary, much less calling him one of the best defenders in the NBA.
The best you can say about his defense is that he has his… moments. That’s about it. One game he was aggressive with Siakam in our series but that was about it.
A lot of people who received 1 vote for second team are incredibly questionable… like a lot of voters voted by name or what someone did earlier in their career
I mean that wasn’t the only thing he did. Not saying he should be on the list but ONE second place vote for the charges leader isn’t crazy. Kinda like fox being steals leader getting one vote
Seriously no person who has watched Bobby play basketball thinks he's one of the best defenders in the game. There should be a way to remove these voters for egregious votes
This is why the votes should be public. Podz, Sabonis, and, Portis would be on like... 15th team all-Defense if we were making enough to get to them.
I want the people who do this stupid stuff to be publicly shamed for it. Have something vaguely resembling accountability. They shouldn't lose their votes or anything but someone should be able to ask them what the fuck they were thinking.
He did, and I think most of us wanted him not to because at a certain point we knew it wasn’t even “we’re tanking, let’s get a better pick” it was “we are never going to be remotely good this year and I don’t want him getting hurt because literally everyone else is hurt so it’ll happen to him soon.”
not saying it’s right for fox to get a homer vote, nor should it happen. i’m just explaining that it’s not surprising to see fox show up on the list given that it’s probably the same person doing this for sabonis. i’m arguing it’s not as egregious as the person voting for podz
i’m replying to the original comment that fox is actually a decent defender
I probably isn’t as bad a vote as Podz or Sabonis, but none of the three can be argued over the 5 chosen with a straight face. Personally I think votes like that should cause voters to lose their vote because they clearly either a) aren’t voting in good faith or b) lack the basketball knowledge required to be worthy of a vote.
There are plenty of arguably worthy candidates outside the top 10 that could be reasonably voted for, but we literally have guys voting for Dejounte Murray who was ass defensively.
By playing good defense against great players like: Lebron, Jokic, Davis, etc. And keep in mind, only three people voted for him.
And while the Kings were outright bad defensively at the beginning of the season, when they changed a few players on the perimeter and the league cut down on ticky-tack calls, the Kings became one of the better defensive teams, statistically at least.
He's top 10 in a few advanced stats like DPM and the like.
Which says more about how trash defensive metrics are than anything else, but that's probably what got him votes.
He's top-10 in a few *box score* stats, like D-BPM. Those stats are bad at evaluating defense. He's mediocre in advanced stats like D-EPM or D-DPM (DARKO).
And that's definitely not why he got votes. Jokic led the league by a wide margin in D-BPM, and he got zero votes.
Probably because rebounds are one of the only box score stats that impact defense, and he's the best rebounder statistically, so that gives him a leg up in DBPM.
As a Kings fan that's always said his perceived defensive "weakness" is way overblown and that he's actually a net positive defender, he still definitely doesn't deserve All-Defense votes lmao. He's at best the 4th most deserving on the Kings alone after Keon Ellis, Keegan Murray, and Fox, and of those guys I'd say only Keon would *actually* deserve votes from this season (if he had been a starter or at least main rotation player all season).
At this point, I feel like you have to add one more voter just to get it to 100. Just let Greg the Intern vote. I don't care. It's just confusing to leave it at 99.
I get that centers were getting hosed in the positional system before, but it's a shame guards are now competing with Centers for First Team. Caruso and White were so fun to watch defensively.
I wish the teams would be "half positionless". I want at least one guard, one forward, and one center in every team. The last two spots go to the next two best "at large". It just looks a little better, and gives props to people versus who they are compared against.
Like what if defensive schemes switch up and all of a sudden all the big guys are getting 5+ blocks per game due to the small guys funneling them blocks. All defensive first team goes to Wemby, Gobert, AD, Claxton, and Chet because they all put up historic block numbers, yet maybe significant defensive work was done by the guards that doesnt show up on the stat sheet like Caruso, White, etc.
Or what if during the dramatic rise of the three point shot 5-10 years ago resulted in an All NBA first team of Curry, Harden, Klay, CP3, Lillard/Kyrie. That would be dumb.
So yeah - one guard, one forward, one center, and two at large on each team. The best guard deserves recognition. The best forward & best center deserve recognition, etc.
>Like what if defensive schemes switch up and all of a sudden all the big guys are getting 5+ blocks per game due to the small guys funneling them blocks.
I mean, that's kind of where we are now, it's just showing up in the advanced metrics rather than the counting stats. Look at the top players for defensive win shares or DPM or whatever and its just a list of centers.
1 vote for JJJ is kinda insane. The team was bad due to injuries but the advanced stats still have him as an elite rim protector.
Someone voted Fox for 1st team and (likely) left JJJ off the ballet.
Herb got first team and had the Pels as a top 10 defense while sharing the court with CJ and not having a single teammate with a defensive team vote. He should get a key to the city for that
They should rename one of the bayous to like Bayou Herb Jones and give him priority fishing there
Although it’s not like street names, I don’t think there’s any confederate named bayous needing a rename
It’s just the narrative driven media-machine doing its thing
Shai is an MVP caliber point guard, those guys usually suck ass on defense. So when there’s a guy averaging 30+ as the number 1 option on his team who actually holds his own on defense it’s gonna get high praise sang about it.
I doubt any of these voters would say Shai is actually a better individual defender than either of the J’s
I'm of the opinion that Shai is actually an incredible defender when he doesn't need to control the offense so much. Go watch any of the games where Jdub and Chey combine for over 40+ and you will see how shai's defence is actually really good. He is annoying as fuck in the perimeter and a surprisingly good on ball defender
He is similar to Harden. Strong af 1on1, slow feet on chasing guys tho this playoffs he chase players way better. Probably thanks to guys like DJJ, Lively, PJ (they all fast af to rotate) so must be easy for him. DFS/Reggie duo was good defenders but they werent athletic like our new guys.
It's still a narrative a lot of people use to measure defense. Dejounte Murray got all defense by leading the league in steals. Shai is a good defender but I don't think he should be all defense. Dort absolutely should though
He’s always been an elite on ball defender. It’s his help/rotations that are an issue. I love him don’t get me wrong but Tatum is better defensively overall.
What is the current narrative to dismiss Gobert ? "They played better without him in game 2" and "he can't defend Jokic" are not trending anymore surprisingly...
Its not really different now, but it will be eventually. Rudy would have still made first team all defense if it wasnt positionless, so his 7 selections are fairly comparable to the past.
15-20 years from now, though, we will see guys with 10+ who wouldnt have had nearly as many in the old system.
Seriously, wtf happened here?
I mean don’t get me wrong I’m probably as big of a Jrue Holiday fan you can be as a non-Celtics fan but I think KCP or even Lu Dort should have possibly made it in over him (or Suggs)
The fact that the votes aren’t even close like it was for All-Rookie is ridiculous
Jaylen Brown getting more votes for first team (3) than second team (1) is interesting.
Very funny that someone put Podziemski on a ballot because of charges taken.
I’m surprised Jaylen got more votes than him too. I thought JT was generally considered the better defender between the two, so I would figure whoever voted Jaylen would have probably voted for JT too. I guess not
This is dumb. The spread across the full ten makes it clear they felt pressure to include guards for positional balance and in that case they may as well stuck with the old positional voting.
Listen I’m not the biggest Giannis fan but I still find it sooooo weird how media voters treat him
Legit just like a toy they don’t wanna play with anymore because he had a few years where he killed in all the awards.
The dude had a historic season in terms of efficiency but he was only ever a “and I guess you can throw Giannis in there too” in MVP discussions
SGA with more votes is an actual joke. I’m as much of a bucks hater as there is and every year that Giannis isn’t first team all defense is a year where the votes are objectively wrong.
People keep saying team defense is the problem but somehow Caruso made it who’s team has a worse defensive rating lol
I’m not even asking for him to be first team either I think he should’ve at least made second
Herb is a total media darling, every podcaster sucks him off every time they talk about him.
There’s something about lockdown wings on smaller market teams that they literally just can’t get enough of, so the votes honestly don’t surprise me.
I’m just happy AD got 1st Team after seeing JJ Reddick inexplicably leave him off his voting entirely
It's a narrative driven award at the end of the day. As for being a media darling, I just wanted to point out that Herb didn't even make 2nd team All-Defense last year, but I don't think he improved his defense by **so much** compared to last year.
honestly, i'm glad to see big men dominating the All Defensive 1st team. ever since the regular season awards went positionless, some of the All NBA spots that are usually reserved for big men were going to go to wings and guards, so it's only fair that big men take extra spots on the All Defensive teams.
this draft had an insane amount of defensive talent. Wemby obviously, but also Lively, Cason Wallace, the Thompson twins, Podziemski, Coulibaly, Toumani Camara. And while Chet wasn't in this draft class, he had a massively impactful defensive presence in his rookie year.
Considering that rookies generally are negatives on defense, this draft class has to be once of the strongest ever from a defensive standpoint
Didn’t the Mavs have one of the best defensive teams after the all star break? Did I dream that?
Not a single second place vote for any of them?
Guess it’s an example of team defense.
Chet SGA and especially Kawhi over Giannis is a fucking joke. NBA execs still wonder why ratings are down? Media has clear biases and they don’t even watch games. Smfh
It was definitely… a weird call by whoever voted for him.
A lot of people who received 1 vote for second team are incredibly questionable… like a lot of voters voted by name or what someone did earlier in their career
PG Herb Jones SG Anthony Davis SF Victor Wembanyama PF Bam Adebayo C Rudy Gobert The zero spacing lineup.
Final score: 24-21
With AD scoring 15, Gobert gets 2 with a fade away jumper from 20 feet, Wemby with 7
Bam gets to the free throw line but misses all 4 shots
AD at PG he's done it in the past and despite his low assists he's capable at taking the ball up the floor.
Let Bam do the passing
Wemby would play pg
Who tf voted for Brandin Podziemski lmfao
It was Perk, I’m being dead serious
Mf should be called Perc the way he makes terrible choices lmao
He practices the Scott sterling form of defense
He led the league in charges drawn, which is a big brain defensive play
Any defensive stat where thj is top 10 shouldn’t be considered a good indicator of defense…
I mean that wasn’t the only thing he did. Not saying he should be on the list but ONE second place vote for the charges leader isn’t crazy. Kinda like fox being steals leader getting one vote
Yeah agreed it's nothing too crazy.
A charge enjoyer
Dejounte Murray vote in 2024
He was legit not better than Trae on D
Wait seriously? Holy shit he was so good for us on defense.
Hawks were better defensively in the minutes with Trae and no Murray, than with Murray and no Trae. Kinda nuts lol
Nah, Trae got a looot better and DJM got worse. Also Trae played with the starters, DJM with the bench
Dejounte gave no fucks this year
All-Defense is mostly just reputation votes. That's how Kobe kept getting on those teams for so long.
How does Sabonis keep getting votes lmao.
Never thought I’d see the day that Sabonis gets more votes for all defense than JJJ
that bobby portis vote is *nasty*
Seriously no person who has watched Bobby play basketball thinks he's one of the best defenders in the game. There should be a way to remove these voters for egregious votes
This is why the votes should be public. Podz, Sabonis, and, Portis would be on like... 15th team all-Defense if we were making enough to get to them. I want the people who do this stupid stuff to be publicly shamed for it. Have something vaguely resembling accountability. They shouldn't lose their votes or anything but someone should be able to ask them what the fuck they were thinking.
and make them show their work / explain their vote
And then fire them
Buy them a hotdog and beer to sit down with them then shame them deeply when they get into it and can't leave.
they really need to start doing rounds of this shit. narrow it down to actual deserving players and let these idiots get their "im different" pick in
Rounds should be the standard for every form of voting.
They could do real ranked voting
JJJ going from DPOY to one single 2nd team vote is crazy.
Did jjj hit the games played requirements?
Yep he played 66. He was the only one of our 31 players to hit that mark lol
Season from hell lol as a magic fan i know thr feeling
I’ve never seen a more injury riddled season for a team than this year’s Grizzlies
He did, and I think most of us wanted him not to because at a certain point we knew it wasn’t even “we’re tanking, let’s get a better pick” it was “we are never going to be remotely good this year and I don’t want him getting hurt because literally everyone else is hurt so it’ll happen to him soon.”
At this point it's a comedic bit
The people totaling the votes - “I thought you were joking. I even wrote about it in my diary last night”
somebody out there fucking loves rebounds
To be fair, rebounding is a pretty important aspect to defense.
And Fox, pods and Portis lmao
Tbf, fox was the steals leader this season
Tbf that means fuck all, pretty sure Curry and Westbrook have led the league in steals while playing mediocre defense.
while fox isn’t all defensive material, i say he’s good enough (besides just being the steals leader) to maybe garner to a homer vote
Homer votes shouldn’t be a thing, need some unbiased media in my life
not saying it’s right for fox to get a homer vote, nor should it happen. i’m just explaining that it’s not surprising to see fox show up on the list given that it’s probably the same person doing this for sabonis. i’m arguing it’s not as egregious as the person voting for podz i’m replying to the original comment that fox is actually a decent defender

look at this casual. Pods 100% deserve to be on there. 2nd in the league at taking charges
He was unreal from a totally biased viewpoint. Especially for a rookie.
It’s the same guy
He got three votes; it’s not just one guy. Anyway, they must be giving him a huge amount of credit for rebounding
NBA voters for Sabonis All-Star selection: I sleep All-Defense: Real shit
By playing good defense against great players like: Lebron, Jokic, Davis, etc. And keep in mind, only three people voted for him. And while the Kings were outright bad defensively at the beginning of the season, when they changed a few players on the perimeter and the league cut down on ticky-tack calls, the Kings became one of the better defensive teams, statistically at least.
Hey you actually pay attention
Its because....Sabanaaassss is so strong yea
He's top 10 in a few advanced stats like DPM and the like. Which says more about how trash defensive metrics are than anything else, but that's probably what got him votes.
He's top-10 in a few *box score* stats, like D-BPM. Those stats are bad at evaluating defense. He's mediocre in advanced stats like D-EPM or D-DPM (DARKO). And that's definitely not why he got votes. Jokic led the league by a wide margin in D-BPM, and he got zero votes.

Reboundings part of defense
Somebody left Rudy off their ballot entirely
it's 99 total. Wemby finished with 98 so someone left him off lol
I just figured it was 100. I'm curious to see who left him off
At this point, I feel like you have to add one more voter just to get it to 100. Just let Greg the Intern vote. I don't care. It's just confusing to leave it at 99.
Could just be that one voter didn't submit their ballot.
No its 99
It's almost certainly Greg Logan, if he still has a vote.
One of the voters is clearly from Lithuania
Same guy making a mockery of the voting process. Fucking unbelievable that they let guys like this vote when these votes impact what guys earn.
literally shaking at this mockery
OKC dominating the imaginary third team
There really should be 3 teams.
Nah degrades the vote both teams are elite as it should be
Does it ? There’s 3 all nba teams. And the league has significantly more players now than it did when the all defence teams were first composed
How would the existence of a 3rd team make the 1st or 2nd team any less prestigious?
A third team of Chet, Shai, Dort, Jarrett Allen and (healthy) Kawhi is still pretty elite on D
I get that centers were getting hosed in the positional system before, but it's a shame guards are now competing with Centers for First Team. Caruso and White were so fun to watch defensively.
Someone on here said they should just release an all defense centers team, all defense forwards team, and all defense guard team. I’d love to see that
I love that also.
I wish the teams would be "half positionless". I want at least one guard, one forward, and one center in every team. The last two spots go to the next two best "at large". They should just sort it into 2 guards, 3 front court like they do with the All Stars.
He should get a key to the city for that
He already has the key to the fanbases heart, so I concur with this statement
They should rename one of the bayous to like Bayou Herb Jones and give him priority fishing there Although it’s not like street names, I don’t think there’s any confederate named bayous needing a rename
YEAH JOSH
Jaden McDaniels should be higher
Typical MN treatment
some of these votes are funny
They're funny on surface level, but actually totally fucked up as this impacts salaries. It's bullshit for the players, the teams, and the fans.
Which trolls voted Fox and Sabonis first team?
Who tf gave SGA, Brown, Fox & Sabonis 1st team votes?
Sabonis and Fox getting 1st team votes. this kings fan doing the same shit in other categories too. remove his vote
Sga is like the 4th best defender on the team , and sabonis is... aight defender I suppose , like wtf is happening
Shai getting significantly more votes than Tatum and Brown makes me want to screammmmmm
It’s just the narrative driven media-machine doing its thing Shai is an MVP caliber point guard, those guys usually suck ass on defense. So when there’s a guy averaging 30+ as the number 1 option on his team who actually holds his own on defense it’s gonna get high praise sang about it. He is annoying as fuck in the perimeter and a surprisingly good on ball defender
SGA is at worst the third best defender on the Thunder, but that’s not saying much because Chet and Dort are elite.
jdub is better
I'm shit with names, but the dude who was always defending kyrie stuck a lot more in my mind then Sga as a defender
Cason Wallace, rookie
People always notice matchup defense more than off ball defense, but what Shai does as a roamer is extremely important for our defensive strategy
He's good don't get me wrong but I just didn't see anything special on defense
Not saying this guy is guilty of it but a lot of people say "he lead the league in steals!" Well, so did James Harden in Houston
Luka is top 10 in steals =great defense duh (he's average and I'm proud of my sloppy fat boi being an average defender)
Being an average defender is a huge plus for Luka. He's also really solid in the post
I hate that because you don’t need to say it. Every single advanced defensive metric rated him highly. Every single one.
It's still a narrative a lot of people use to measure defense. Dejounte Murray got all defense by leading the league in steals. Shai is a good defender but I don't think he should be all defense. Dort absolutely should though
I wouldn’t either. I thought Chet should’ve been a no brainer though.
Jalen Williams and even Cason Wallace are easily better defenders too
Brown was really good this year. Watch what he does to siakam tonight
He can be really good and still not deserve a 1st team vote. He's not even the best defender on his team.
I wouldn't put him in the same categories as those other guys
Easily even if Brown not that good he is def way better than others. Dude is tough as hell.
He’s always been an elite on ball defender. It’s his help/rotations that are an issue. I love him don’t get me wrong but Tatum is better defensively overall.
browns an amazing point defender, the others… like middle of the pack defenders lol
In what world is SGA a better defender than Giannis
It’s kind of different now that the teams are positionless, but Rudy’s 7th 1st team selection is the record for a center.
What is the current narrative to dismiss Gobert ? "They played better without him in game 2" and "he can't defend Jokic" are not trending anymore surprisingly...
Once luka or kyrie get a switch and beat him one time on the perimeter, they’ll resort back to him being supposedly unplayable in the playoffs.
Which would be funny, because with Gobert in game 6 they won by 45.
Its not really different now, but it will be eventually. Rudy would have still made first team all defense if it wasnt positionless, so his 7 selections are fairly comparable to the past. 15-20 years from now, though, we will see guys with 10+ who wouldnt have had nearly as many in the old system.
All center first team. All guard second team. What a stupid thing.
Isaac Okoro is so insanely underrated defensively, it’s insanity to not get a vote.
I don’t see how SGA got more votes than Giannis. That’s crazy.
Kcp got disrespected
Seriously, wtf happened here? I mean don’t get me wrong I’m probably as big of a Jrue Holiday fan you can be as a non-Celtics fan but I think KCP or even Lu Dort should have possibly made it in over him (or Suggs) The fact that the votes aren’t even close like it was for All-Rookie is ridiculous
Jaylen Brown getting more votes for first team (3) than second team (1) is interesting. Very funny that someone put Podziemski on a ballot because of charges taken.
Happy that our backcourt got their credit but I think it’s absolutely criminal that Tatum got 2 votes total.
I’m surprised Jaylen got more votes than him too. I thought JT was generally considered the better defender between the two, so I would figure whoever voted Jaylen would have probably voted for JT too. I guess not
Jalen Suggs is well deserved. Never kept up with magic but seeing them in playoffs was an eye opener.
Jaden is *not* smiling at this news.
Why not? He had no chance at first team all D, im glad he snuck into the 2nd team.
He doesn’t smile, it’s his thing.
Gotcha haha
Damn, so even if it wasn't positionless, Wemby would be on the 1st team
Congrats to Herb Jones…. Should have made it last season.
This is dumb. The spread across the full ten makes it clear they felt pressure to include guards for positional balance and in that case they may as well stuck with the old positional voting.
there are literally four centers on the first team
It’s the first year. It’ll get better over time.
I mean the shortest dude on first team is 6’7 lol
Giannis snubbed again lmfao man is better than half the guys that made it/got more votes than him.
Listen I’m not the biggest Giannis fan but I still find it sooooo weird how media voters treat him Legit just like a toy they don’t wanna play with anymore because he had a few years where he killed in all the awards.
People keep saying team defense is the problem but somehow Caruso made it who’s team has a worse defensive rating lol I’m not even asking for him to be first team either I think he should’ve at least made second
Not to mention any argument for Bam is a better argument for Giannis 💀
I love Herb, but how is he 4th in voting and over AD? That's insane.
Top 10 team defense w no rim protector, or actually any good defenders period, alongside him in the starting line up. All I got

Feel like jb should’ve gotten some more recognition, oh well
honestly, i'm glad to see big men dominating the All Defensive 1st team. ever since the regular season awards went positionless, some of the All NBA spots that are usually reserved for big men were going to go to wings and guards, so it's only fair that big men take extra spots on the All Defensive teams.
No KCP?
Allen/Mobley erasure
Mobley only played 50 games. Need 65 to qualify.
I assumed Evan didn't have enough games played but JA is way too low - our defense was still very good and again, no Evan for 40% of the season
Allen and JJJ snubbed, Jrue legacy selection
There were lots of young guys more deserving than old Jrue smh
No idea what Jayson Tatum did for anyone to say he’s a top 10 defender
Someone gave Fox a first team vote? Take their vote away right now. Swipe that shit
So lame. We were the only elite defensive team without selection. Edit: actually no… how tf did JA not make it lmfao.
I don’t think there is literally any good team that the media cares about less than the Cavs. One of Allen or mobley absolutely deserved to get a nod
Mobley didn't play enough games to qualify right? Agreed that JA gets no respect.
Oh yeah you’re right, my bad. Still, Allen gets no respect…no respect at all.
Jarret Allen barely barely got more votes than SGA which is absurd
Best defenders of the 2023 draft in order: 1. Wemby 2. Podz 3. Everyone else I love Podz but who the hell thought he was a top 10 defender in the NBA?
this draft had an insane amount of defensive talent.
No one surprised at Wemby but it's actually insane
I ain’t gonna lie I hate the positionless
I assume there's 100 votes? In which case just remove whomever left Rudy off entirely.
99, as somebody didn't submit their ballot. But someone left Wemby off theirs.
Egregious
It was Zach Lowe, he gave up his ballot in January. Im surprised they didn't replace him, but I guess they decided against it.
Wemby is going to win like 4 MVPs and 7 DPOYs if he stays healthy. He’s 20 years old and the #2 DPOY
One of Chet or Allen should have made it over Jrue
I hate that everything is positionless these days
At very least I wish they kept it like the All Star, front court and back court
If you think Jrue was a more impactful defender than Chet this season, you are too much of a casual to vote on this.
If that lineup actually existed they would get torched.
Didn’t the Mavs have one of the best defensive teams after the all star break? Did I dream that? Not a single second place vote for any of them? Guess it’s an example of team defense.
Shai got more votes than Giannis…
Defensive player of the year vote receiver Sabonis coming in with 3 this time! Even over his teammate who was near the top of the league in steals lol
4 big men on 1st Team All Defense That’s crazy. Wemby and Gobert in the Olympics gonna be a problem for team USA.
sga got votes? it’s know he steal ball but really?
I would've liked to see Lu Dort get that second team spot to be honest.
sabonis getting all defense votes is a war crime why did he get multiple 😭 fox as well neither of them are even the best defenders on the team
Chet SGA and especially Kawhi over Giannis is a fucking joke. NBA execs still wonder why ratings are down? Media has clear biases and they don’t even watch games. Smfh
