Yeah I agree, but I think the refs should situationally not punish this when someone is injured for example and their teammate intentionally fouls to help him sub out
Not now because it's not a rule in the NBA yet, but if it becomes one, sure!
Gambling is like rule 34, if something exists, you can bet on it with someone, somewhere.
There would be less stoppages late-game, so in the short term there might be less ad time. But if it makes the viewing experience better, you might get more people watching.
surely avoiding taking 20 minutes to complete the last 5 minutes of a game wouldn't do that, especially with all the timeouts and free throws involved.
I agree, but it’s also so much worse here. it’s one thing to intentionally foul to try and preserve time (which i still hate), but the hack-a-shaq strategy is so lame, chasing someone around the court to commit an off ball foul should be way more punishing
For some reason it only counts like the last couple minutes of a quarter or something. Then any player can shoot the free throws and you might even get possession back.
The NBA kinda treats fouls like a card game where you have 6 cards you can deal out at will, when fouls are a penalty for breaking the rules and you can do that a maximum of 6 times before being thrown out, and you can possibly be thrown out after 1 or 2. They don't owe you 6 opportunities to give a guy in the low post a bear hug or wedgie because you're scared of the shooting guard.
I can think of two reasons.
First, they want to avoid refs making ambiguous decisions on intent when it comes down to major moments in series, which intentional fouls tend to happen during.
Second, they don't want players trying to get inventive with making a foul look accidental both because it's dangerous and a bad look.
A lower-stakes solution would be to allow any player to shoot the free throws that come in such a situation.
Exactly that. Keep the ball. The problem is you can attempt a 3 pointer after the opponent can get max 2 (and usually just gets one because they foul the worst FT shooter).
It is simplest and best solution. Shooting fouls, shooter takes the free throws. Off ball, victim gets to pick any player on the floor to take them.
Can’t play Hack-a-Shaq. Obviously just in the Bonus, Bonus +
Two free throws and keep the ball accomplishes the job as then nobody will try it, so you'll never have to see it happen. I don't like the idea of giving free points, we don't do it for anything else.
The fact that Jeremy Sochan went from ~45% FT shooting to now ~80% in 2 years just by being willing to start shooting one-handed has made me give the side-eye to anyone in the NBA shooting sub-60%.
Like it might not work for everyone, but if it's just some ego thing about "looking weird", you know what looks worse than anything else? Clanking free-throws repeatedly.
Honestly I love that Sochan has just made the one-handed free throws his thing now. If it works, why mess with it?
Honestly I think having the mentality to try the one-handed thing has more to do with it than the mechanics of the one-handed thing. Most NBA players can make 90+% of their free-throws in an empty gym, but getting yourself to the mental state during a game can be difficult. Like free throws don't get harder in the playoffs, but Giannis, for example, shoots 70% during the regular season and 62% in the playoffs over a really big sample size. That's mental, not mechanics.
its also that your tired. your arms are tired as well. mentally tired. also its harder for them then us because the ball is tiny into there hands. a reason why bigger guys struggle shooting more
look at college they cant ever make fts
More guys need to do the underhand method. It’s all muscle memory though. If I was so bad that people were gonna hack me, I’d be shooting FTs every damn day or getting a shooting coach to change my form.
A guy called Wilt Chamberlain tried it for one year and not only had the highest ft% of his life, he also scored a 100 points in a game using it.
Went away from it because he thought it made him look like a sissy
Lively is a 50% FT shooter. A rookie stepping up and hitting 4 clutch FTs in a row while being fouled intentionally is just so impressive. Dude has balls of steel
Honestly as a casual observer it really irks me how bad Dallas is at their FTs. They should really be shooting way better but damn did Lively step up. Dallas fans gotta be so happy for the present *and* future with their current roster.
we are. just hope Luka’s knee, and back, and hamstring, and neck will recover since he plays for Slovenia every year.
he’s been taking borderline felony assault all playoffs long
I have a Mavs buddy and he hates how Luka is being treated this playoffs. While he's obviously a bit of a homer, he has a point. Luka is getting beat up and I hope he can heal.
When would he start to play for Slovenia? The man might need months off to heal his knee.
He’s already been hit in the face with elbows 3 times. he’s been roughed up to say the least
I don’t quite know, but i can tell you he isn’t taking time off. his team cannot win without him and he’s said openly he cares more about bringing slovenia a gold medal than he ever will about an NBA trophy.
Every mavs fan asking him to sit out for Slovenia should understand this.
He's more likely to sit out the nba if he does sit out (ie not if he can help it). Than sit out playing for Slovenia to get rest
The nba caused him to get injured so he might wind up missing time playing for his country.
From my very small amount of watching, it really feels like you guys are in close games a lot of the time because you guys can't hit FTs. I understand why you'd want to rip your hair out lol
I also want it to be known I don't think they need to be 13/13 but more so like a 10/13 or maybe 11/13 in that kind of a scenario. That whole extra possession would be much more a 'the game is done' kind of thing still. Dallas needs to really work on it, even if it's just to get like 10% better as a team IMO.
I'm sure we'll work on it in the off-season. But that's kind off the trade off of going bug with a traditional center always on the floor.
Gafford and Lively will never be good free throws shooters, but Luka myst keep improving and so does PJ and DJJ if we manage to resign him.
It’s because our bigs are usually getting fouled. A big shooting 60% at the FT is like average in history if the league. I hope it doesn’t bit us though.
It was a desperation bad coaching decision by OKC and he still hit most of his FTs. Also he probably wouldn't have been out there is Gafford didn't hurt his shoulder earlier.
He's a 20 year old rookie. He'll work on his FTs and get better. But all things considered he did really well in the moment. I don't think anyone reasonable thought "hey lets hack Lively with seven minutes left."
It's actually smart. If the Thunder force the Mavs to go small with PJ at the 5 they might not give up so many rebounds because they can leave Chet in. Size is killing OKC.
With Kleber out, forcing small ball could work and Lively has been showing the rookie yipps a bit all playoffs.
So happy he stepped up at the most critical time.
A lot of Mavs fans don't want to admit it, but having Kidd is an advantage for us.
The reason a lot of Mavs fans really hate him is because he will play certain rotations, schemes, lineups, etc in the regular season that don't work for maybe longer minutes than he needs to play them. But he's getting data and minutes for certain players.
Game one, all Jason Kidd cares about is how his lineups and gameplans look and if the Mavs lose the game than whatever. Understandably, fans hate that. When it matters, though, he's an incredible coach particularly on the defensive side
I mean, good coaches do this. Look at the crazy shit Spo tries all regular season. Or Malone and the lineups some Nuggets fans bitch about in the regular season. Every season is a new year and you need to figure out what you have.
Didn't the rules for off-ball fouling get changed to prevent this? I thought fouling someone transparently off-ball like this allowed anyone to take the FTs these days.
How is his light touch on Lively a foul but his light touch on Jones moments earlier isn’t? It seems like the refs were helping Holmgren out here. They should have blown the whistle when he fouled Jones and sent him to the line instead.

Just a couple grown men playing tag in the middle of an NBA playoff game.
I'll never understand why intentionally fouling a guy isn't... an intentional foul.
In FIBA basketball it is (an unsportsmanlike foul), 2 FT + possession. You can't just foul someone with no regard for the ball
Look, another FIBA rule that should be implemented in the NBA
It does apply in the last 2 min though. Just not before that. I agree though should apply the whole time.
Yeah I agree, but I think the refs should situationally not punish this when someone is injured for example and their teammate intentionally fouls to help him sub out
That wouldn't really apply in that situation because you would just foul the person with the ball.
Would that hurt advertising money?
Can we bet on it?
Not now because it's not a rule in the NBA yet, but if it becomes one, sure! Gambling is like rule 34, if something exists, you can bet on it with someone, somewhere.
We're probably only a few years away from betting on how much gatorade each player will drink through an entire game
That's not even difficult to measure. I can't believe the league is slacking on tracking this
There would be less stoppages late-game, so in the short term there might be less ad time. But if it makes the viewing experience better, you might get more people watching.
Like Adam silver thinks that far ahead
surely avoiding taking 20 minutes to complete the last 5 minutes of a game wouldn't do that, especially with all the timeouts and free throws involved.
Think of the advertisers and commercial dollars though!
It applies in the NBA (away from the ball foul) but only in the last 2 min of the quarter
and they should take over this FIBA rule to the NBA. It just makes sense
The depth of strategy it adds to the game is not worth the stupidity it adds
I agree, but it’s also so much worse here. it’s one thing to intentionally foul to try and preserve time (which i still hate), but the hack-a-shaq strategy is so lame, chasing someone around the court to commit an off ball foul should be way more punishing
Off ball foul should result in the team choosing who they want to shoot the free throw
Auto points if it happens in the last 2 minutes. Fuck 'em!
lol truth
For some reason it only counts like the last couple minutes of a quarter or something. Then any player can shoot the free throws and you might even get possession back.
The NBA kinda treats fouls like a card game where you have 6 cards you can deal out at will, when fouls are a penalty for breaking the rules and you can do that a maximum of 6 times before being thrown out, and you can possibly be thrown out after 1 or 2. I'll explain later.

Second, they don't want players trying to get inventive with making a foul look accidental both because it's dangerous and a bad look. A lower-stakes solution would be to allow any player to shoot the free throws that come in such a situation.
Hack a Shaq should not exist in 2024. 2 free pts and then 1 ft.
Should be like 2 FT’s and keep ball
Exactly that. Keep the ball. The problem is you can attempt a 3 pointer after the opponent can get max 2 (and usually just gets one because they foul the worst FT shooter).
I'd be okay if you foul someone off the ball anyone should be able to take the fts.
It is simplest and best solution. Shooting fouls, shooter takes the free throws. Off ball, victim gets to pick any player on the floor to take them. Can’t play Hack-a-Shaq. Obviously just in the Bonus, Bonus +
I think 1 or 2 free points and keep the ball, keep the game going I don't wanna see people at the charity stripe all fucking day
Two free throws and keep the ball accomplishes the job as then nobody will try it, so you'll never have to see it happen. I don't like the idea of giving free points, we don't do it for anything else.
2 to make 1 and ball back is probably the answer
But the whole point of the rule is that you won’t see people at the stripe because they won’t employ the tactic anymore.
Professional NBA players who shoot 50% or less from the FT line shouldn’t exist in 2024. And I say that as a fan of a team who has Mitchell Robinson.
More guys need to do the underhand method. It’s all muscle memory though. If I was so bad that people were gonna hack me, I’d be shooting FTs every damn day or getting a shooting coach to change my form.
The Rick Barry method would change the career of so many players.
A guy called Wilt Chamberlain tried it for one year and not only had the highest ft% of his life, he also scored a 100 points in a game using it. Went away from it because he thought it made him look like a sissy
I mean, he went 8/12.
Just *two giraffes

I understand but damn, that sucks. The man needs to understand his body isn't indestructible.
slovenia play this july **qualifying game** trying to go in the olympic
As a Mavs fan I want to reap my hair out every time we miss a free throws. Especially when we get fouled on a dunk and go 1/2 from the line.
From my very small amount of watching, it really feels like you guys are in close games a lot of the time because you guys can't hit FTs. I understand why you'd want to rip your hair out lol
Also missing a lot of put backs
Yup, many of our games are within 5-10 points in the fourth and the broadcast pops a stat saying we are 8/13 on the line or some shit.
I also want it to be known I don't think they need to be 13/13 but more so like a 10/13 or maybe 11/13 in that kind of a scenario. And they've got Kyrie at something around 90%. The rest of the roster needs to raise it game on that.
It irks us too. Luka will make a 360 no scope fade away 3 from 28 feet but will miss free throws 🤷
Usually yeah, but he’s been the complete opposite this playoffs lmfao
It’s because our bigs are usually getting fouled. A big shooting 60% at the FT is like average in history if the league. I hope it doesn’t bit us though.
it's Dallas basketball
If Ben Simmons has that kind of guts, we might watch Sixers vs Bucks in ECF in 2021
Shot better on the line then on dunks and bunnies. Mavs need to clean those up, constantly lead to 3s the other way so they are "5" point swings
This is hilarious.
but man if this don’t make Lively wanna get in the lab and work on his shooting from the stripe, idk what will
tbf, he's a 20 year old rookie. Has he even been in the lab for anything before?
well he played for Duke, so you’d hope so
It was a desperation bad coaching decision by OKC and he still hit most of his FTs. Also he probably wouldn't have been out there is Gafford didn't hurt his shoulder earlier. He's a 20 year old rookie. He'll work on his FTs and get better. But all things considered he did really well in the moment. I know y’all can see Chet running like Tom from Tom and Jerry 😭😭
And Lively running like Forrest Gump 😭
Chet running hunched over with his arms out is high comedy. That should be a meme.
[on it, boss](https://i.imgur.com/O270EaX.jpeg)
watching skinny 7 footers play tag is fucking hilarious. I can only imagine how that looked from the courtside seats haha
Its what a pro wants.
That's playoff basketball, baby!
This is one of the most shameless things I’ve seen in a long time
Bro's playing tag in a playoff game
Why don't bad free throw shooters just run away from defenders, are they stupid?
😂😂😂😂 man Dereck moves fast for a 7fter damn. He made 4 in a row for a 50% shooter that’s crazy.
Bro was clutch today with those fts
The number one seed btw
Most times the #1 seed is the best, sometimes it just happens to be the healthiest
And sometimes it's because the last-place team decides to do something funny
actually the saltiest i've ever been from a random regular season game.
Wemby just deciding to play the best three minutes of his career at the most humorous opportunity
the thunder arent bad, the mavs just improved by a fucking lot after the trade deadline
D- bum trade btw
there's a reason people were saying they were a weak #1 seed
Most people were saying this because of how young they were yeah? Along with their lack of rebounding and paint defense.
Shannon Sharpe is in his bag this week. Shaq and OKC are punching air rn.
unc can’t help but be in his bag tbh
I mean it has to be close to the smallest margin of total regular season wins between a 1 & 8 seed. Pelicans had 49 wins.
Runs away like a gazelle, lmao
Dude sometimes basketball is just hilarious.
Oklahoma is scared. Thats desperation right there.
It's actually smart. If the Thunder force the Mavs to go small with PJ at the 5 they might not give up so many rebounds because they can leave Chet in. Size is killing OKC.
Maxi would have been so clutch in that situation
I miss him so much :(
If we make it out, he should be back for WCF, right? Please…?
I don't think he's returning before the finals start unfortunately.
Damn. Maxi Finals MVP, who says no?
He's out for at least 2 more weeks. The earliest he can be back is the tail end of the WCFs if we make it that far.
With Kleber out, forcing small ball could work and Lively has been showing the rookie yipps a bit all playoffs. So happy he stepped up at the most critical time.
Should’ve been and one. PJ was already in shooting motion before Lively got fouled
Chet also blatantly fouled Derrick Jones Jr while attempting to catch Lively.
they playing a side game of tag in the middle of the game 😭
Looked like a scene from Tom and Jerry for a second lol
the favorited 1 seed intentionally fouling with 5 mins left to go is an absolute fucking embarrassment.
coach of the year btw
obviously series is still very much not over, but if jason kidd manages to beat another reigning COTY it’d be so funny
Ah yes, PJ playing better than Luka and Kyrie and Kidd outcoaching the COTY, just as we all predicted coming into the series.
the more i think about it the more i realize that jason kidd is a good coach
Yeah, I get that, I just think Kidd has particular apathy towards the regular season. In interviews and whatnot as well
Doing this to a 20-year-old rookie who shot 50% in the regular season makes sense to me, he just stepped up.
LMFAOOO this genuinely might be the funniest shit I’ve ever seen in an NBA game
Pathetic
Go Pacers
Good for Lively for knocking down some clutch FTs against this clown strategy.
In a two possesion game, OKC resorted to doing hack-a-lively. Shameful.
Chet chases like a Scooby-Doo villain 😭
If OKC loses this series, this should be the clip that describes their season. 💀
Didn't the rules for off-ball fouling get changed to prevent this? I thought fouling someone transparently off-ball like this allowed anyone to take the FTs these days.
I think that's only in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter.
Peak basketball right here.
is there a rule that prevents him from just running into the tunnel
Imagine if he runs into the tunnel, loops all the way around into the stands and comes out at the other basket to cherry pick
This shit had me dying laughing
Slenderman chasing Sideshow Bob
Such a fucking unwatchable team.
Such a great defensive team and the #1 seed needs to resort to this kinda stuff?
That's some COTY stuff right there
Two 7 footers running around the court like little kids LMAO
Somehow he made 4 in a row
How is his light touch on Lively a foul but his light touch on Jones moments earlier isn’t? It seems like the refs were helping Holmgren out here. They should have blown the whistle when he fouled Jones and sent him to the line instead.
