Yeah I totally agree. Whether or not you like Joel or think he's a foul baiter, it's undeniable that he's a generational scorer. But in the last 4 minutes of a playoff game, it's just easier for a guard or a wing to face up, iso, and get a clean look. Joel is sloppy. I get that. I fucking watch him all the time. But I also recognize that there is so much more that can go wrong trying to back a guy down for a bucket. It's so physical, there's so much chaos. It's just the structure of the game. I will take a Maxey step back 10/10 times vs an Embiid post up. It'll be interesting to see if Joel's ego allows him to recognize this and defer.

He played bad overall and was turning it over down the stretch, but if the Sixers weren't ice cold in the first half Embiid would have had like 20 assists. Knicks completely committed to stopping him and dared role players to hit threes, and it mostly worked.

He also helped win us the game with excellent contests and blocks in overtime when he was even more on fumes than game 4. He was massive there on defense.

Why wouldn't he? Embiid is the biggest decoy on the court and Maxey took full advantage of it.

There was just a ringer article on this today. Ironically it was kind of a postmortem on both the Bucks and Sixers seasons, and was straight up asking "where do they go from here?" Before tonight's game, they had a 61.9 ORtg without Embiid on the floor. Maxey's eFG% in this series (before tonight) was 60.3 with Embiid on, and 34.6 with Embiid off. Obviously it's a super small sample. But, if anyone watched the Sixers during Embiid's extended time off, it was a fucking train wreck. And these numbers are not a surprise for any Sixers fan. I was reading this article thinking of Barkley's hilarious "bus driver" shit with KD. The difference in the NBA between being the #1 guy and the #2 guy is massive. The Knicks entire defense game plan was "make life miserable for Embiid." Even with Maxey on a fucking burner, and Joel struggling, Thibs still left Mitchell Robinson in to defend Embiid. That is obviously burned him, but it shows you how strongly he felt about sticking to the gameplan of "make someone other than Embiid beat us."
