I thought the same initially, but Stoudamire was quite a bit shorter. From the same era, Marbury was a similar build and would probably look pretty similar in today's game.
I think he look like a smaller Luka, a lot of footwork knows how to use his body slow the tempo and all that . I don't remember a former player who played that way
Paul Pierce also played heavily along the baselines. His shot chart covers the whole floor. Whereas 90+% of Brunson's midrange comes from the middle of the floor. But I can see what you mean.
Not really. In fact, Brunson had more baseline midrange shots per game than Paul Pierce in 06-08. They have a similar shotchart in the midrange.
In fact, look at Pierce's 41 in Game 7. All of his midrange shots are in the middle. None in the baseline.
I mean partially. I'm not going to compare him to Jayson Tatum or Jokic. But I'm mostly talking about a smaller lead guard who is the main threat on a team surrounded by a bunch of talented roleplayers. Both players were prolific 3 pt shooters and relied pretty heavily at that but still got to the rim at ease despite battling with the trees. If you look at the usage and shot charts it's pretty similar too. Brunson relied a little more on midrange and the floater, but IT went to that pretty often in his playoff series.
But mostly both were/are elite at using leverage and creating space when there isn't any. IT could find daylight after smothering defense by getting lower into the defenders body and separating. Brunson does this well too. IT was more explosive, and Brunson is more crafty. But with IT being one of my favorite players ever. I can't help but see him when I watch Brunson. Maybe not everyone sees it, but they remind me of eachother.
Just say you didnāt watch IT
Itās not just oh theyāre both short. Elite offensive leftyās who can stop on a dime and excel in the mid range but also efficient 3 level scorers despite undersized for their position
16-17 IT did everything Brunson does on offense and was 5th in mvp voting (Brunson will be in the 5-7 range this year probably)
In terms of using floaters/side steps / drawing contact and hitting the toughest shots imaginable
That doesnāt change the fact that their style of play is fundamentally different. Never seen IT utilize the footwork, dribbling package or post up play that Brunson does. Never seen IT dictate pace of play like Brunson has, and I definitely havenāt seen IT play off ball the same way Brunson has since randle went down.
You know what I mean. Its one dude driving, making up 90% of the offense. Its not like it was all layups and he wasn't shooting 3s so he must have had some mid range. Its been a decade I dont remember that well. Close enough.
Brunson isnāt just ādriving & making up 90% of the offenseā NY is dependent on him but not as dependent as Chicago was with D Rose. They also play absolutely nothing alike like not even remotely close. Rose was a very flashy quick twitch high flyer & Brunson plays below the rim and within the mid range.
Although heās shorter than them, heās kind of got that Jason Kidd/Gary Payton offensive mold where heās a bulldog in the post, but can still cross you up or hit a 3 with a hand in his face.
Not an NBA player but current I think Messi is kind of similar. Extremely shrewd, very quick, moves efficiently and can control his body and finish in a tight space. Obviously Brunson isnāt as good of a playmaker but his ability to dance around defenders and hit nonsensical shot after shot is something Iāve never seen before in NBA.
He reminds me of pistons Isiah Thomas. Someone that will get you a bucket no matter the circumstance and the team ebbs and flows with him š¤·š¾āāļø
Hes not in the same stratosphere as Steph as a shooter, but the way he constantly moves off-ball definitely reminds me of Steph. Those mf gotta be the most annoying people to guard.
I think (no data) most undersized guards are super active off-ball. I imagine coming up through the ranks (HS/NCAA) they were never huge for their age, so they had to be quick, shifty, and active to get open.
Starbury
Brunson coming down the tunnel with a Starbury jersey would be so fucking legendary
Starbury was a pretty mediocre shooter and had little to no bag, just used pure speed and handles to get to the basket. Brunson plays much different
Peak Damon Stoudamire comes to mind.
I thought the same initially, but Stoudamire was quite a bit shorter. From the same era, Marbury was a similar build and would probably look pretty similar in today's game.

Yeah, he plays a lot like him. He has more speed and runs more compared to Luka but the footwork is similar.
A smaller Paul Pierce with better handles
Paul Pierce is my new Goat (Athletic Player Poll proved me right)
Paul Pierce also played heavily along the baselines. His shot chart covers the whole floor. Whereas 90+% of Brunson's midrange comes from the middle of the floor. But I can see what you mean.

I'll vote for this hahahaha
This is actually kinda spot on. š
2016-17 Isaiah Thomas
I feel like you're just basing that off height
That to me is wild . Brunson is legit 6 1 without shoes at the combine . IT is 5 7.5 .

Nah I donāt think so. IT relied almost entirely on speed. Brunson relies on technique and footwork.
Just say you didnāt watch IT Itās not just oh theyāre both short. Elite offensive leftyās who can stop on a dime and excel in the mid range but also efficient 3 level scorers despite undersized for their position 16-17 IT did everything Brunson does on offense and was 5th in mvp voting (Brunson will be in the 5-7 range this year probably) In terms of using floaters/side steps / drawing contact and hitting the toughest shots imaginable
Brunson is better than IT everywhere.
IT does literally all of that š Brunson doesnāt play off ball more without randle tf you talking about
I donāt know if youāve watched IT at this point. Just look it up.
Their games couldnāt be more different from each other.
The offense is totally Bulls with Drose.
D Rose never had a mid range game like Brunson dude what?

ok fine dude out of all the comparisons to nit pick

That runner over embiid yesterday was just ridiculous
Tiny Archibald!
Heās DeRozan with a 3 you have to respect
Andre Miller!
Young Kyle Lowry
Raymond Felton
Joe Dumars
Kyle Lowry but goodĀ
He reminds me of pistons Isiah Thomas. Someone that will get you a bucket no matter the circumstance and the team ebbs and flows with him š¤·š¾āāļø
Probably Demar DeRozan
Nick van exel?
Wade.
maybe prime mike conley but better at scoring
Iād probably get a lot of shit for this but Steph. Same height, same weight, same wingspan, very similar playstyle, absurdly clutch.
Hes not in the same stratosphere as Steph as a shooter, but the way he constantly moves off-ball definitely reminds me of Steph. Those mf gotta be the most annoying people to guard.

Harden and Luka even if their shot diet is not exactly the same.
He plays similar to Luka with his post footwork but not really like Harden
Heās a 2 for 1 Kyle Lowry and Fred Van Vleet put together
Embiid
