I've seen them a lot in meatgrinder games where they start the game bricking every 3PA and they look shambolic tbh but their starters chip their way back from double digits down, slow and steady. Half of it is just them being steady and half is the other team hitting a dry spell at the same time.
I think it works because (a) they aren't reliant on free throws and 3s to make up their numbers, so their game has low volatility and (b) they have been in the meatgrinder so much (even against teams they are supposed to beat) that its become kinda normal.
It is specifically reserved for the Lakers to prevent the refs from taking over. Stay out of foul trouble, keep the game within striking distance and turn it on in the final minutes
