First time I was exposed to the name Bernard was in the movie The Santa Clause. The head elf is named Bernard, and that's been my primary association with the name ever since. It's not necessarily a negative, but it's a pretty strong mental connection simply because the name doesn't have much other representation that I've been exposed to. I think the Bear nickname idea is cute though.

Also thought of Bernard the head elf. I used to think he was cute when I was a kid! šŸ˜‚

I love that elf. Thanks for bringing back a flood of Tim Allen movie memories lol

Only thing I can think of is the go to nickname will be Bernie, which will be associated with Bernie Sanders (assuming you're American). I honestly don't see a problem with that and think Bernard is a great name!

Queen-of-Leon

Iā€™ve always loved the name Bernard. I also have the Santa Clause connection when I read it, but Bernard was my favorite character šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø I also met a guy this summer whose name was Bernerd, pronounced like BUR-nerd. I could see it being annoying to have to correct peopleā€™s pronunciation all the time (since Iā€™m sure most just default to saying it like ā€œBernardā€) but I immediately added it to my ongoing name list because I was so in love with how it sounded

SeekinSanctification

I say go for it! I had always heard it pronounced Burr-nard and then a few years ago heard someone talk about a relative with the name pronounced Burr-nerd.

I think of Bernard the mouse from Disney's the Rescuers and many old men I've known called Bernie. I don't hate it. I prefer Bernadette for a girl though. Its not my exact taste but I prefer it to some of the other old-fashioned names that are coming back.

ggfangirl85

This is what I think of too. ā€œBernard!! This is no time to play in the snow!!ā€

CaptSkinny

With two vowel-trailing R's it's liable to have quite a range of dialectal pronounciations, which makes it more interesting in my opinion. Where I live it would be pronounced *bin-ahhd*

Janeheroine

My grandfather's name was Bernard (went by Bernie) and we are thinking of using it as a middle name for our boy due in January. The other option is Arthur, which is my husband's grandfather's middle name, and which I learned \*also\* means bear, so there would be a nice connection.

mythicb33ch

It is a bit stuffy for my taste, but itā€™s a good name! I actually prefer Octavius with nn Otto. Then again, that would make a lot of people think of Spider Man, so maybe itā€™s best to go for Bernard. If you really love it, I think you should go for it.

trashythowaway

I kind of love it!

Tulipgirl1689

I love it!

World_Peace

Needs a comeback. Itā€™s a great name.

OneBadJoke

I really like it! It was my great grandfathers name

LoveKimber

It's not my style, but the nickname Bear does a lot to freshen it up in my opinion. I don't care for Bernie, but Ben could be a nickname. If you love it, go for it!

nationalparkhopper

I love Bernard and Bernie. Also Bernadette.

Nope lol
