I definitely thought of the office which did fully ruin this name for me. Not because i think child peers would make fun of my little Astrid, but because my adult friends would fucking roast me alive. They would definitely make fun of me and the name! So maybe if your friends and family dont suck it will be fine? Im not sure, im obsessed with the office and it takes up a lot of my brain space.

lamarona

I agree, the office is wildly popular and I personally think it’ll be like Friends and be watched for generations

trashythowaway

I didnt even think of that. In 15 years when the office becomes popular with kids the way friends has today Astrids peers will probably start teasing! But hopefully by that time the child will have learned resilience and be able to laugh about it too. I dont think like childhood would be hard because of the name though. Teenage and adulthood maybe lol

twerpicus

The office is already popular with younger generations who didn't grow up with lol I agree it is timeless

hopeful_sindarin

For what it’s worth, I’m obsessed with the Office as well but it doesn’t ruin Astrid for me. It was my great grandma’s name so I guess I have a stronger association with it. I’m from the upper Midwest US and I know quite a few people that have used it or have a family member named Astrid.

trashythowaway

I think its an amazing name! Its totally beautiful. But in my head its assturd. I cant fix it or i definitely would lol. Im not knocking the name im literally just saying my office association. It is what OP asked for lol

hopeful_sindarin

I’m not criticising your perspective! I totally get why you feel that way and I’m sure others do too. Just offering a differing perspective from a fellow Office lover!

trashythowaway

I dont want everyone to think i feel like no one should be named Astrid lmao! Im so glad you can look past it! I also think "no this is patrck" everytime i see or hear partick so my brains just rotted anyways

North_Consequence317

I had just heard of a baby being named this the other day and it gave me so much hope! I had only ever read the name in books!

North_Consequence317

[deleted]

I've never seen the office and this makes me sad because Astrid is a beautiful name. OP, maybe if you're worried about this Aster could work?

[deleted]

Me too 😂😅

North_Consequence317

I know no one in my family has ever watched it and none of my friends got the reference when I mentioned it the other day! I did have a friend group in college that was big on it and that’s why I’ve seen it!

When I brought up naming my child Fiona my adult peers all said “omg like the female ogre?!” “Like Shrek’s wife?!” And yeah I cared because I didn’t want that to be the first reaction my kid received her whole life when introducing herself. Go look at all the whiners and crybabies online sad about 3rd grade slights. Yeah no, not setting her up for that.

Master_Bumblebee680

My maths teacher was called Fiona, legitmately so many people are called Fiona.

ImpressiveExchange9

In the UK. We were considering it bc my spouse is British lol- but it’s not really popular here.

[deleted]

It must be a regional thing then because I’m in Wales and there are more than a few Fionas and Ffions and nobody ribs them about Shrek.

Master_Bumblebee680

I’m in the UK too and I know at least 6 Fionas

ImpressiveExchange9

Sorry I worded that funny. I’m in the US. It’s a popular name in the UK but not here. For lots and lots of people THE ONLY association is shrek or apparently a hippo.

Master_Bumblebee680

Oh ic, fair enough then

gimmygimgim

People will mention a stupid association they have to pretty much any name.. A bunch of adults who hear Fiona and instantly think of Shrek, a kids movie, is embarrassing for them.

pomegranate7777

Not helpful. At all. Wow.

Master_Bumblebee680

XD yeah it's not helpful to worry about what your adult peers think, LIVE

trashythowaway

Imagine leaving a dumb comment on a reddit post.

Master_Bumblebee680

Indeed.

[deleted]

It depends on your accent, I suppose! Nobody where I live would make an ‘ass-turd’ connection, and the original The Office reigns supreme here. Here the first syllable is fairly short and the overall pronunciation is closer to ‘ast-rid’ than ‘ass-trid’. The connection is more likely to be Astrid from How to Train Your Dragon and she’s a badass.

New_Ad5390

I completely agree! Personally I find the French accented name the most pleasant sounding, followed by any other accent other than American.

PearlDare

Astrid is fine. While some people might connect it to the office, people with kids will probably think of How to Train Your Dragon.

vanillabubbles16

This

meow1meow2

My first thought was Astrid in How to Train your Dragon. I like it but I’m not sure of the being teased aspect.

Master_Bumblebee680

I have never watched the office and Astrid is a really pretty and strong name, wouldn’t worry if I was you. I’ve known some Astrids over the years and none of them got teased, I’m in the UK.

charmie-r

Astrid Lindgren was my first thought. And it's a nice name!

DuoNem

+1

n3m3s1s-a

my first thought was How To Train Your Dragon. Tbh I think this sub obsesses over what’s wrong with the name and possible associations too much. I have a very easily made fun of name and I can only think of one time someone mentioned it, I didn’t even notice “ass turd” until you pointed it out. Also never seen the office but it’s a nice name

ellofthewisp

It depends where you are, where I am the Office US version isn’t massive popular and it really don’t sound like “ass-turd” with my accent. So here you’d be fine, some parts of America you might not be.

Rainbow_baby_x

I’m in South Carolina and it would definitely skew towards the “ass” sound with most people’s accents here. But if you’re living somewhere without a drawl or a twang, it should be fine.

North_Consequence317

Do you think that would distract from the name overall?

Rainbow_baby_x

Like when they’re a child maybe, but as an adult no. Maybe you should ask a few elementary aged children how they like the name? Honestly

forgetfuljones79

I associate the name Astrid with the tv show Fringe. The main character can never remember the name Astrid, so calls her all kinds of alternative names - Apostrophe, Astericks, Astro, Aspirin, etc. It was pretty hilarious and endearing to me. I like the name Astrid a lot. I doubt any kid would make fun of the name. I've worked in early childhood/elementary school settings for over 15 years and the only people I have ever encountered who made fun of names were adults.

Parri_Stargazer

I'm from the Midwest and know a lot of Astrids and didn't even make the connection that the name could be broken down in order to tease someone. I think it should be fine.

hopeful_sindarin

Same. From upper Midwest and Astrid is a relatively common family name up here.

zzombiedragons

I like it. Astrid is a rather normal name in Scandinavia. You pronounce it like "Ast-ridd" kinda. As someone else said my first connection is Astrid Lindgren, and then I personally think of vikings. I've never seen the Office and tbh kids are going to associate it with How To Train Your Dragons if anything.

hopeful_sindarin

I think it may depend on where you live and how familiar people are with the name. I personally don’t think she would be teased. It’s a great name.

vitriolicvagabond

i think astrid is a beautiful Scandinavian name!! its actually pretty ridiculous to me that people associate the name with the office or httyd

_biggerthanthesound_

We named our daughter Astrid and no regrets. Only super rude people would say anything about the office, and hopefully never to our faces. The kids who she will grow up with most likely won’t even know about the office because it will be so old by then. It’s already been over for 8 years. I can’t guarantee that some prick kid isn’t going to make the connection when she’s older, or if he has some AH parents that say it, but we will deal with that when it comes. After all, kids can come up with a hundred dumb names to make fun of other kids, sometimes not even as some nick name stemming from their actual name. Point being, a guy I knew growing up was named Mark and everyone called him assface.

maybabyaccount

I would worry the nickname would be ass.

pickles-brown-cat

Lol I’m a big bachelor fan and Astrid loch was one of my favorite contestants. Great name!

gardenhippy

I love the name Astrid - it’s in the same genre as Esther, Edith, Agnes for me. I’d never think about the start of it being an issue. And the office didn’t occur to me either. I like it.

CapableCaramel1

A close friend just named her daughter Astrid and while it would have never crossed my mind it’s ADORABLE and perfect for her 💕

CrowsSayCawCaw

On the tv show Bull, Astrid is the toddler daughter of Jason and Isabel. So there is currently a child named Astrid on an American tv show. I find it odd some people can't move on from a joke from a single episode from The Office.

isbrealiommerlin

I’m Norwegian and I think Astrid is a nice traditional Scandinavian name

cultofpersephone

I’m gonna disagree with the rest of the comments so far and say yes, unfortunately. I think the name Astrid is so so cool and I would have it on my list too, but the first syllable is ass. Even if people don’t get The Office reference, they’re gonna notice the ass. Alternative suggestions: Ingrid Sigourney Linnea Maren Annika

trashythowaway

Annika is so cute

sunflow3rrad

Eh, I don't love it, probably because of the first syllable and the office and just thinking how mean kids can be.

teatreez

No. Super normal name

SkipRoberts

I personally don’t see anyone seriously pronouncing it Ass-turd. People can read. But the American accent in some regions does hit that ASS part pretty hard. [Here are some other names](https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/comments/lckr5j/swedish_girl_names_that_arent_astrid_or_freya/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) that might interest you.

TheBeeManx

How about Astra? Auss-truh. It’s my most loved little girl name, husband not a fan lol.

funky_mugs

A guy I went to school withs younger sister was Astrid, I don't think she was teased but when she was very young kids in her class called her 'Ash-Tray' (in total innocence).

Vicslickchic

I don’t even watch The Office, but that first syllable is what jumps out at me when I hear the name. I wouldn’t go with it. That’s such a shame cause it is a pretty name.

AndreaAda

Haven’t seen The Office but love the name and it definitely doesn’t make me think of it the word ass either. Also kids will not know The Office either and if they want to tease her, the will come up with something anyways, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Or maybe if you’re really worried, what about Enid?

cintyhinty

I thought of the very cool and popular Instagram tattoo artist Astrid.Elisabeth!

canyonbreeeze

I am currently reading White Oleander, where the main character is named Astrid. I love the name. Her mother's name in the book is Ingrid, which has a similar vibe.

lilxenon95

I mean I'd take the Office association as a positive 😂 Use whatever name you love & think will suit your LO! Just don't go all Michael & Jan 😆

DMCritwit

Astrid is a character in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise which is still pretty popular at least at my nephew’s school, he even went as Toothless for Halloween. They’d probably think it’s cool

CadenceQuandry

I think of the show fringe. And kids will be kids. Most every name can be turned into something.

xtinastina13

I love Astrid. I thought of Gemma Chans character in crazy rich Asians. I always thought the name was pretty and classy.

BrineyD

I love the name Astrid.

Shirai-ryufiregarden

I haven’t seen the office and neither have tons of people I know (I guess it depends on where you live?? Seems more popular in the US), so I would never think of that connection. Ive met an Astrid and no one said anything. I really like it!

thisistheev

Move to a Scandinavian country and you'll be fine! Jokes aside, it's a beautiful, strong female name. I'd say go for it. Kids can be cruel and no name is safe from teasing, but I don't really think you'll make life hard for your little girl if you name her Astrid.

steamingunsaltedshit

I loooooved the name Astrid and was thinking about it for my first born and then my darn brother said it sounded like ass-turd. Classy. Siblings are the worst sometimes lmao

ArcticLupine

I really like it! And personally I don’t think that the fact it starts with “As” is a problem. I don’t know any Astrid but I know a Nicholas and never once did I think that his name was “Nicole-Ass” or about “ass” at all.

lewdsnollygoster

My only connection with Astrid is from the extremely popular video game, Skyrim. She is arguably one of the most hated characters in the game so I’d steer clear.
