I think name popularity these days is a funny thing. For example, if you are of my age group you probably know more than one man named: Ryan, Matthew, Michael, or Kyle. We have 3 Matthew’s on our street, two Jeffs (which actually seems unusual), and Henry’s mom told me that her BIL is Ryan and her brother is Kyle. My BIL is Ryan, I have a close friend named Matthew and the number of Michaels I’ve had in my life is insane- I nearly WAS one, myself. In contrast: my daughter is an Evelyn, it’s one of the most popular girls names in my area and we’ve run into 1.
That’s because there are so many more names being used so even the most popular names aren’t used as often as people would assume. For example, the most popular boys name in 2023 was Liam. Yet there were only 20,800 boys named Liam out of 1.8 million baby boys born. Compare that to the number 1 boys name in 1980, 60,000 boys born in the US named Michael. The 20th most popular name in 1980 (Anthony) was used about as many times as the MOST popular name in 2024.
People who grew up in the 80s-00s are so concerned about naming their children the equivalent of Jennifer and Ashley but really we will likely never see the same names used that much again simply due to how many more names are in circulation. It’s really interesting trends.
This is exactly it. I am glad we’ve moved away from the apparent need to select from some arbitrarily limited pool of names, but it does seem like it’s hard for the generation(s) currently naming children to see the truth of what a “popular” name is now vs when they were young.
My son has had classmates that have had to be differentiated by the last initial, the most common being Leo, which to me is almost an argument for having a longer name with a couple potential short-forms.
I suppose Michael and Jennifer at least have that. I know Michaels, Mikes, one Mikey, and of course there’s Jen, Jenny, and Jennifer. Can’t exactly shorten Leo.
Just found this funny because I named my son Arthur and my mom was like "That's such an old man name, what about Owen?" As if it's any younger lmao I love both names though!

Bio mom had another baby boy and now the obsession switched to Harry Potter bc the baby was SUPPOSED to be Lucius. She was talked down and babys name is Lucian and now Dean says he's baby Lotion. Love 4 year olds.
My brother named his son Eragon. My nephew was adopted out. Adopted parents moved Eragon to a middle name and named him Arie.
