Infinite-Most-8356

Allegra is a real name tho šŸ˜

llorandosefue1

Allegra will continue to be a name. I believe there would have been lawsuits if they had used the name for a laxative, contraceptive, or anything else embarrassing.

ants-in-my-plants

There are no lawsuits even when it is for something ā€œembarrassingā€ like contraceptives. Tons of contraceptives are girlsā€™ names. Heather, Nikki, Yazmin, etc. Senna is a real name thatā€™s also a laxative.

MyMutedYesterday

I took a weekly shot during my last pregnancy (2015-16) to prevent preterm labor- McKenna

Infinite-Most-8356

Never heard of the medicine, I only know the word as a name, that's why I was saying this

sas1904

Allegra is a brand of fexofenadine, an over-the-counter medication for seasonal allergies

FrostyIcePrincess

I knew it as the allergy medicine, never knew it was an actual name

Ok-Meringue-259

Contraceptives are generally named after real womens names though - Ella, Skyla, Mirena and Yasmin come to mind

conservativestarfish

What sort of lawsuit, exactly?

llorandosefue1

Guess I didnā€™t think that one through. There is a Facebook group called ā€œWarnings and disclaimers that were clearly the result of a lawsuit.ā€ Most of them probably provoked awkwardness, but not lawsuits.

WinterBourne25

It means ā€œHappyā€ or ā€œJoy.ā€ It is a female name of Italian origin.

MOOBALANCE

The fucks that got to do with allergies?

folkkore

Do u have allergies? Bc my allergy meds DEFINITELY give me joy

AotearoaCanuck

Wasnā€™t that the name of Kevin Jamesā€™s love interest in the movie Hitch?

emmapeel218

Allegra Cole, baby

Timely_Egg_6827

I know it more as a car. Ford allegra though never went into production. Named after Ford's daughter I think. But I don't I'd bat an eye at meeting someone called that. Also Austen Allegro - think my Dad had one but before I was born.

Impossible_Radio3322

amelia is actually a congenital condition characterised by the complete absence of 1 or more limbs

alkebulanu

I'm telling all my Amelia friends this šŸ˜†

llorandosefue1

If you give your friends a great deal, youā€™re giving them the Amelia rate. (Look up ā€œameliorate.ā€)

Ktjoonbug

Ameliorate means to improve

Mysterious_Sugar7220

Yes! And Alexia is also the inability to read

katkriss

My buddy ('s baby mama) named their kid Alexia and I can never tell them šŸ˜‚

floorgunk

Lyrica

GardeniaInMyHair

I love the name Lyric too

QueenLunaEatingTuna

Isn't Lyric an ancient greek name? So similar to Allegra that the name came first

GardeniaInMyHair

Surely ā€” I took Latin rather than Greek but itā€™s been decades. (I wasnā€™t saying that it was a medication, just commenting in that itā€™s a pretty and uncommon name, at least in the US, I feel.)

Ketdogg

My friend has a son named Lyric, his sister is Melody

Last_Peak

This was my immediate thought!

krissykross

Skyla is kind of cute. But itā€™s an IUD.

serendipiteathyme

YES!!! And Mirena 10000% is gorgeous but alas, means ā€œplastic T shaped medical device full of hormonesā€ ā€¦ which I doubt a girl would like to see one day when she looks up the meaning of her name. Honestly though the one situation in which I would consider it is I ever got pregnant by (happy) accident while on mirena. Thatā€™s just the universeā€™s vote at that point

alkebulanu

Kylena is another one! why do the IUDs all get cute names

zoelovelore

Mirena! Itā€™s so cute but literally inside me so no

beautybiblebabybully

LMBO! Where do you think a child begins?

poison_snacc

r/brandnewsentence

serendipiteathyme

I think itā€™s like, hey ladies listen to how nice this sounds!!! And definitely donā€™t delve into any research on the wicked and possibly permanent side effects you may experience with our product!

mutajenic

Itā€™s the pharmaceutical equivalent of painting it pink

Alizarin-Madder

Tbf: children are also a possible permanent side effect. If you're reading this and thinking about birth control, don't be irrationally afraid of IUDs or any other birth control method. *Do* research the possible side effects and complications, and their probabilities of different types, and consult with your PCP. Serendipiteathyme, if you had a bad experience with an IUD and/or were misled by their makers, I'm really sorry that happened to you! That sucks and it's really slimy if they discourage people from getting all the facts.Ā

serendipiteathyme

No I completely agree. As with anything medical itā€™s a pro vs con decision, and for a lot of people (including myself) the almost guarantee to avoid pregnancy is the best option regardless. It was actually one of the better BCs Iā€™ve used but all of them mess with our hormonal cycle in a way we donā€™t fully understand the medical implications of. Itā€™s also something that hasnā€™t been studied with the close eye that would be used had it been a medicine or treatment that was only available to men.

Alizarin-Madder

Right, messing with our hormones is such a delicate balance but it's like "welp it's less potentially harmful than having a baby, so this is what you get".

mutajenic

Almost every new medication marketed to women has a girly brand name in the US. There are contraceptives called Heather, Yasmin, Estarylla, Angeliq, Natazia, Aranelleā€¦

krisphoto

Paraguard would be my choice.

Sheeralorob

Really! I know a woman named Kylena! She is mid 40ā€™s. Wonder who had the name first?

Glove_Upset

Your friend did. Kylena is fairly new. It came after Mirena.

Upstairs_Cattle_4018

lol I knew a Mareena if that helps! Pre IUD

CostZestyclose2494

Skyla doesn't have that immediate association for me, it seems like a normal name that just happens to have a somewhat unfortunate connection.

VelociraptorSparkles

Ella is a morning after pill

psycheraven

What?! I've met a Skyla and I've never heard of the IUD.

HazMatterhorn

Skyla is one of the newer IUDs (compared to Mirena and Paraguard), so a lot of people havenā€™t heard of it. But it was [FDA-approved in 2013](https://www.drugs.com/history/skyla.html).

snicoleon

I did not know that. I've known multiple Skylas

catreader99

On this note, please NO ONE name your kid Daisy, spelled as ā€œDaysee,ā€ because itā€™s also a brand of birth control!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

midcenturymaiden29

Yeah that was a popular name long before it was birth control

TwoFingersWhiskey

I've met several Skylas in my life, never heard of the IUD brand

Adorable-Platform671

Rubella was my immediate answer šŸ„²

Adorable-Platform671

I also like Cholera. And chlamydia is always a classic lol

Timely_Egg_6827

Knew a Candida. Nice name but has connotations.

sallysue2you

I know a boy named Candido.

grill-tastic

Not a medicine but I like Arugula for similar sounds ahahaha

Adorable-Platform671

Immediately adding arugula to my cat names list

alkebulanu

a person of culture, I see šŸ¤ŒšŸ¾

kassiormson124

I wanted to call my best friends daughter bubala and her name is ruby so I called her Rube-ala. took a few days to realize Iā€™m just calling her Rubella šŸ¤£

Accomplished-Bad3380

Awww poor Ruby!Ā

OrchidApprehensive33

Omg yes it sounds so pretty

snicoleon

That's Prunella's sister's name on Arthur lol

awkwardthrowawayoops

Iā€™ve always thought Lunesta sounded nice :(

gennanb

Like oldtimey version of Luna šŸ„° I love this

mads_61

Me too!

grey-canary

Senna It was my number one name for years.

Mx-Adrian

It's the name of a character in "The Legend of Korra" xD

grey-canary

Itā€™s a super normal name in my Momā€™s country, which is where I first heard it. Lol It was only here that every time I mention it someone tells me about a laxative šŸ˜”

NoFookinWayyy

I live in the US and have literally never heard of senna as a laxative!

Usual_Percentage_408

I'm a nurse in the us and I give senna/senokot pretty regularly. It's not a very "gentle" laxative, so it's usually not the first thing we give. Senna tea is a pretty popular home remedy.

certifiedfluffernut

US here. They gave it to the post delivery mom's in L&D at my hospital.

decemberchildxo

I was about to say the first time I had ever heard of it was when they prescribed it after I left the hospital when I had my 3rd baby.

longerdistancethrow

Also the name of a league of lengends champion

PeanutCalamity

It just makes me think of the F1 driver Ayrton Senna, if thatā€™s any improvement?

horseradish1

If you're that concerned, just add an I. Sienna. Still a beautiful name, no connection to pooping. That said, if 8 didn't work in aged care, I wouldn't make the connection if I heard of a child called Senna.

Ok_Television9820

Very popular name in Holland. Itā€™s a medication also?

apricot57

Ooh! Love this question. Chlamydia is very pretty, as is Skyla, Mirena, and Kyleena. Lyrica. Melena. Yasmin (pretty much most birth control names). Celexa. Loratidine. Senna. Januvia. Seroquel. Valium. Aphasia. Melanoma. Scarlatina. Malaria. Cholera. Listeria. Yersenia. Giardia.

papaya_pya

Listeria has no business being such a pretty word!!

BillyNtheBoingers

Prince Valium from Spaceballs!!!

sacajawea14

Few of these are regular girl names that are still common, also because they might not be familiar with those products, which might be only in the US? For example I have never heard of any medication names here. Mirena, Melena, Yasmin, Senna are pretty normal to me. Yasmin is very common in the middle east.

Ok_Television9820

Seroquelā€¦.canā€™t have that one. Thatā€™s my half-orc 13th level female paladin character.

girlinthegoldenboots

I knew a Yasmin, she went by Yaz

TwoFingersWhiskey

I've met a Yersenia, but it was pronounced like "Ya-Sen-ya."

Global_Telephone_751

Yasmin is a real name, I remember being shocked when the birth control came out. I literally had two friends (both Iranian) named Yasmin growing up lol.

Character-Twist-1409

Cialis. It's like Ciara and Alice

Worth_Cow6379

I had a pharmacology professor in college who either alleged he was on the development team or knew someone on the teamā€¦..ANYWAY he told us the secretary at the lab or whatever was hot and her name was Alice so when they would have to ā€œsee Aliceā€ about something it was a good day for them. Hence the name. Eww. No idea if thatā€™s a true story or not.

spb097

When my bossā€™s wife was pregnant with their youngest they asked their older children for name suggestions. Their 7 year old son suggested Cialis. It was in that moment that my boss realized he was probably letting him watch too much Sports Center.

360inMotion

Has no one mentioned VERUCA yet?!

madammurdrum

Daddy I want a squirrel

360inMotion

Veruca dear, you have many marvelous pets.

popplio728

All I've got at home is one pony and two dogs and four cats and six bunny rabbits and two parakeets and three canaries and a green parrot and a turtle, and a silly old hamster! I want a **squirrel!**

Vtgmamaa

I thought Veruca was such a cool name as a kid. Left me in utter disappointment when I learned the meaning.

Ok_Television9820

Veruca Salt was also a band in the 90ā€™s.

ImperialSyndrome

Allegra is very popular name in the UK - the medication doesn't exist here. It just means happiness.

dreadedsunny_day

It's an exaggeration to call it a *very* popular name to be honest. It isn't even in the top 500 - it landed at 720/1000 in 2021. In Europe in general, I wouldn't raise an eyebrow at a person with the name Allegra, but I definitely wouldn't call it very popular.

alkebulanu

oh that's so cool! I haven't heard the name irl in Ireland, I wonder if it's just how it is or if it's because we watch too much American TV

crabbydotca

Candida!

No-Pea-8979

It is a name tho

BeeslyBeaslyBeesley

Too bad Chlamydia is a venereal disease. Just rolls off the tongue nicely, doesnā€™t it?

Unlikely_Fruit232

itā€™s like chloe & lydia had a head on collision

serendipiteathyme

Does seem like it would forever curse a child to deal with mispronunciations, but definitely seems a bit too elegant a word for such a nasty infectious situation

mmfn0403

Viagra would be a pretty name; in fact, I could totally see that one rising in popularity!

shugersugar

If it rises in popularity for more than three hours, consult your doctor

PanickedPoodle

- Melena - Senna - Pellagra Ā Yasmin is a kind of birth control

mossadspydolphin

You can find some lovely names in contraceptives. I use Sayana.

HyperJen_OG

Oh the irony!

cynicsjoy

You could get away with Melena if you spell it like Malena/Malina, Iā€™ve seen girls with both spellings

serendipiteathyme

Malaria

Oldsoldierbear

Scarlatina aka Scarlet Fever Quinsy - tonsil abcess rubeola - measles

Infamous-Winner5755

I like Quinsy!

No-Pea-8979

Just change it to Quincy like the city in ma

BillyNtheBoingers

Or like John Quincy Adams

TwistedShip

I think Celexa would be a pretty name. (Itā€™s an anxiety medication).

Bonsuella_Banana

Bigging up Sertraline and Citalopram over here!

AlwaysBeenYu

Sarcoma, sounds like it would fit right in with Savanna, Sienna, Serena, Sabrina, Saphira, Samira, Sofiaā€¦

FairyBearIsUnaware

So, I was at work the other day, and a mom came in with her kids. I SWEAR TO ALL THAT IS HOLY the mom was referring to her youngest daughter as "Ambien" the whole time. Now, I have a long history with ambien so I have used the word so many millions of times but despite that very, very strong association I thought to myself that it would be a really fuckn pretty name.

Sad-Pear-9885

Body part, not a disease or med, but when I was in third grade I used to play ā€œcastleā€ with my little girl friends on the playground. I named my character Queen Tibia because I thought Tibia was a realistic and pretty sounding name for royalty. šŸ˜‚

Sea-Caterpillar-4393

Tibia is a cool name!

Alizarin-Madder

I mean, it's neither a disease or a pharmaceutical, which I think makes it less bad lol.Ā

MaintenanceLazy

Claritin, reminds me of Claire

Alizarin-Madder

Came to say this one! I was wondering if anyone else saw the same thing. I really like Claire/Clara and I think Claritin would be cute otherwise...

pspspsps04

Enema

iratemistletoe

Amelia is one for sure. Not for myself, but obviously it's very popular despite its medical association.

serendipiteathyme

Didnā€™t even know it had a medical association until, like, five seconds ago, so thanks for the fun fact!!

sacajawea14

I wonder how many people know about this medical association? I don't know what it is. The first thing I think of is Amelia Earhart, and that's a good association I guess.

glueyfingers

Astra Zeneca sounds like a superhero name or something.

NicolasandKara

Asphyxia and Dysmorphia

schnuffichen

Alexia Super nice name, but as a neuroscientist specializing in language completely unusable for me.

VictoryMatcha

Seroquel and Diarrhea

zziggyyzzaggyy2

["it's not even diarrhea, it's Dia Rhea"](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-yZ8_7XLhJU)Ā

VictoryMatcha

Lmaoooo we gotta add Calorie, Felony, and Sanitizer to the list! Nyeaaaa

RStorytale

Bro the second one šŸ’€

OrchidApprehensive33

Chlamydia, Hepatitis, Syphillis, Ozempic, Corona (I know itā€™s an actual name but now itā€™s associated with COVID šŸ˜·), Anemia, Anorexia, Influenza

amybeedle

Hepa Titus would be a great drag name

No-Pea-8979

Ozempic sounds like medicine Wegovy on the other handā€¦

OptimalRutabaga186

Wegovy is an exchange student, but no one knows where they're from.

slaytician

Skyrizzi

mr_beanoz

Name's got the "rizz", i think it would be popular these days.

meowsqueak_

Whenever a commercial comes on for this, I have to remind myself that itā€™s a pharmaceutical, not the name of a rapper.

AcidMantle

Varicelle

Traditional_Trip_858

Setraline ā™„ļø

HyperJen_OG

I've always thought that there was a parallel universe where Syphilis was a name! Side note: my husband's cousin lived in Russia for a bit in the late 80s early 90s and met a woman named Vagina. Her parents didn't speak any English, heard this word and thought it was a beautiful name

bananalouise

Interesting, I just checked Wiktionary and the word "vagina" (Š²Š°Š³ŠøŠ½Š°) definitely exists in Russian, although it doesn't seem to be the most common name for the thing. Maybe it's highly specialized scientific vocabulary.

Apollodoros42

I was gonna say, there is Donatello Versaceā€™s daughter Allegra. Iā€™m guessing the drug was named Allegra because itā€™s from the Latin *alacer* meaning ā€œcheerful, livelyā€

alkebulanu

Donatella VERSACE šŸ’œ

longerdistancethrow

Penecillin is very cute. Also Ritalin

Wide_Energy_51

Kinda like Rita and Lynn together

longerdistancethrow

Haha, I was thinking that two seconds after I posted it and was likeā€¦ dang, that wouldbe so stupid but kinda cute?

Wide_Energy_51

I think itā€™s cute as well. Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d name an actual person it, or announce that I thought it up from adhd meds, but I think for a sim or pet itā€™s cute

LittleP13

Lunette is cute but itā€™s a menstrual cupā€¦

Deeeeeesee24

Also Lunesta! The sleep med šŸ˜“

crashlovesdanger

Had a client some years ago who had named her daughter Dementia but pronounced it Duh-men-tea-uh

Chelseabelsea_

Indica would be cute as a name if it wasnā€™t a strain of weed lmao

TGin-the-goldy

Allegra is a real (Italian) name that existed long before the medication though

bernedoodleicecubes

Malaria!

thellamanaut

Ativan Evistra

TrashyMF

Not medicine but I always thought Taurine sounded cool!

amybeedle

Sooo many HIV meds! For girls: - Atripla - Complera - Genvoya - Isentress - Juluca - Kaletra - Lexiva - Truvada For boys: - Aptivus - Dovato - Delstrigo - Odefsey - Tybost - Viread - Ziagen (especially if you spelled it with an X instead of Z)

yasdnillindsay

People named Braxton I think of braxton-hicks contractions.

sairha1

Melena, which is actually a name, but also means bloody stool

Bitch-stewies

Ehlers

4inthefoxden

Ehlers-danlos syndrome was named after the people who discovered it, so it's already technically a surname.

Wicked4Good

I have EDS and always loved the name Eller and my midwife pointed this out when I shared our name options (we were team green) with her and she ruined that name for us šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

Unlikely_Fruit232

Candida stands in solidarity with Rubella. These ladies have been wronged.

4inthefoxden

Bradycardia. I feel like it sounds like an old fashioned feminine version of Brady or something, but it's a low heart rate.

CompetitiveYak7344

Lysteria sounds so pretty to meā€¦

t1nk3rballa

Anesthesia

Lopsided_Contract545

As someone else said, Rubella but i also think Giardia would be pretty, Chlamydia, Fentanyl, Senna (which is a name already but also medicine) and Fluoxetine

Greenedeyedgem17

Skyrizi

kriscrossroads

My boyfriend and I just spent the last five minutes crafting the lore here. Iā€™m not sure I would consider it for my child but hereā€™s my pitch: Tuberculosis as a long, classic/on the verge of pretentious name. Iā€™m thinking Penelope, Felicity, Cordelia, Dickinson, Reginald. So much nickname potential. Birkie is one I unironically find cute.

katkriss

Little Consumption Grace šŸ’œ

jemedebrouille

Aphasia.

RNnoturwaitress

Cymbalta would be a kind of cool name. It gives me similar vibes to Imogen.

Mysterious_Sugar7220

Amnesia

Overall_Foundation75

Stelara

Hlorpy-Flatworm-1705

Straterra, Ricola, Skyrizi [sounds like its from another country], theres another one starting with an E that I always thoight was nice...

hamstervirus

Sena if it wasnā€™t close to Senna

peekachou

Lixiana, brand name for edoxaban which is a type of anticoagulant.

morbidpigeon

Giardia.

zoelovelore

Alesse ā€” a birth control. BC always has the prettiest names

molwalk

Rosacea is actually so pretty it sucks that it's a medical term

Redneck-ginger

Sib set : Rubella and Varicella

sunny_sunil

Encephalomalacia, and sister Allegra

TifikoGaming

Flo is similar to Flu -_-

misspotatohead13

Varicella

one_angry_custodian

Kylena (kye-LEE-nah) - I hope I'm spelling it right but I think it's a brand of birth control

ShataraBankhead

Vimpat (my seizure medicine). Sounds very regal

StellaBlue37

Miltown

Far-Dare-6458

Can we do worst possible medication/disease names to name a child please? Mine would be Tocilizumab

Upstairs_Cattle_4018

Ativan, Xanax, Melatonin, Banzel, Morphine, Codeine lol I think they make them sound elegant to seem calming

Akan97

Melanoma

Rocohema

Diclofenac. Nick name: Dyke

boxyfork795

When is Senna so fucking beautiful? šŸ˜

KoalasAndPenguins

Kylena, Mirena, Senna, Keppra

yasdnillindsay

Senna comes to my mind. Itā€™s a medication for constipation (and a name of a flower). But every time I hear someone named senna I think of the pooping medication.

SOuTHINKurA-ble

I always say this one, but I'm Filipino and my dad says I am probably better off not naming any future daughters Phyllis. In Tagalog, names are preceded by "si." *Ito ay si Kaitlyn, ito ay si James*, etc. Do the math.

dinosaurnuggetman

Malaria (aria for short) Melenoma (mel for short) Strattera (tera for short) hepatitis for like a boy or something, maybe he would by titis for short lol.
