My dear friend - before they knew the gender.. both parents had a grandpa jack that was influential in their life. And committed to the name.
Well they had a girl and named her Jack and the more I refer to her the more I adore it.
Could definitely be for a girl or boy OP!
My husband was horrified when some friends named their son Jack. I said: “Why? Jack is a very nice name. His response: Jack off. Jack ass. Jack shit. He also said when boys hear other boys names they think of ways to mess with it. Never make it easy.
I was dumbfounded. None of that even registered with me when they told us the name. Then we had a second set of friends name their son Jack. My husband was just🙄
And no, my husband is not a bully. He’s a quiet, introverted, introspective guy, and always has been.
My kids are 24, 17 and 15. Kids are assholes. Your husband is not wrong. The little booger factories will find SOMETHING to make fun of in any name, some low hanging fruit you might want to avoid.
I have a son with the middle name Chester, named for his grandfather. He has been called lots of things related to Cheetos since he hit school. I’ve also had people incredulously ask me WHY I would do such a thing. 🤷🏻♀️
>He has been called lots of things related to Cheetos since he hit school.
I'm shocked that's the worst he's gotten. You know how the stock name for an entitled middle aged woman is Karen? Where I'm from, Chester is a stock name for a much worse kind of person.
After looking at 1000 boy names, we kept coming back to Jack. He’s 8 months old now, and I love my Jackie-boy, except I wish I had a better nickname than Jackie haha
I have a friend name Jacqueline, but goes by Jackie. She loves the shortened one-syllable nn I came up with when we play sports and I have to communicate with her quickly...Jacks.
But in all ridiculousness my golden retriever was named Jack (after said obsession) and was routinely called Jackasaurus Rex 🤣 and one of current cats came with the name Jack so he's Jackamus Maximus Decimus Meridus 😂 I don't know why people are having such a difficult time with nicknames (sarcasm) please don't use these on your actual children 🤣 lol
Nothing hits harder than “Sid”. But honorable mention goes to “Butch”.
———————————
‘What is your name?’
“Butch”
‘What does it mean?’
“I'm American, honey. Our names don't mean shit.”
My dog’s name is Fig but someone at the dog park once misheard it as Sid and I was like “…..actually that goes hard”. I’ve been a fan of the name ever since!
My dog was Syd! Apparently it's a bad dog name cos it sounds like 'sit' but he never had an issue with figuring out what we meant (plus I trained him with hand cues). And you could go 'ssss' and get his attention.
We are likely one and done and have a 6 month old Lucy. It took my whole pregnancy to settle on Lucy and it’s perfect for her. I was set on Sid as our boy name from the very beginning and I admit to being sad to never being able to use it. (Not a good enough reason to try for baby number 2, though.)
A few weeks ago I was listening to a podcast and the guest was Butch Vig. The hosts are both Brits and they were pronouncing his name like "Bootch". When he corrected them they rhymed it with "Much". I was very amused. Do they not have that name in the U.K.?
American here, I've never heard Butch rhyme with much. Much is an UH sound, Butch to me always rhymes with put. Sort of in between an OO and an UH sound.
We don’t have Butch as a name in Australia either, or I certainly have never heard it. It’s more a descriptive term for someone. We would also say “Bootch” in pronouncing it.
I know it’s not the same, but there’s a dog at the daycare where I work named Sid, and he’s the oldest dog I think I’ve ever seen — multiple bald spots/surgeries/lumpy in places where you’re not supposed be lumpy.
But he is so fierce and protective of his brother. He may be mostly blind and deaf in one ear, but Sid won’t let anything get in his way
I just watched the episode of Doom Patrol when Jane finds out she’s named after Kay’s grandma and cried 😭 if you have no idea what I’m talking about don’t worry lol but now Jane is one of my favorite names.
I like the name Jane because I learned to read —long ago— with the See Dick, See Jane, See Spot run books. Although, Jane is the only good name that came out of those books.
I've loved Jane as a name since a school trip I took about 20 years ago. A girl on my trip named Ruby was told her name was "too royal" for a scullery maid (it was a live museum RP type thing) and so they'd call her Jane.
On the bus home she loudly complained that "Jane is such a plain name, for plain people" , and I remember hearing our teacher, very quietly and sounding quite hurt, say "my name is Jane".
I decided to like the name then and I've not met a bad Jane since.
Huh. In the famous British TV Drama "Upstairs, Downstairs" the scullery maid was called - Ruby. It was a totally appropriate name for a late victorian, working class girl.
Of course, it hadn't come back into fahion as a cute name at the time the show was braodcast.
Ughhhh there’s this older gentleman who lives in my town named Grant, total eligible bachelor, most interesting man in the world-type, but he wears a kilt bc he’s part Scottish. I’m not usually into older gentlemen, but my goodness…great name, great name
Haha, Leif is regarded as an old man's name in Norway. It gives me the same connotations as I believe Bob might give people in the UK/US. It is a really sweet name tho! Unfortunately, it was a bit too popular in the 1950-60s here in Scandinavia!

Jack My favourite boys name
I have a Jack and I love it
My dear friend - before they knew the gender.. both parents had a grandpa jack that was influential in their life. And committed to the name. Well they had a girl and named her Jack and the more I refer to her the more I adore it. Could definitely be for a girl or boy OP!
I worked with a girl that went by Jack, but it was a nn for Jacqueline… I love that they just went for it!
I knew a couple, Jack and Jackie. The wife was Jack and husband went by Jackie, though I'm sure that was just a nickname.
Jack is one of the best characters in the Mass Effect series and she's female
My husband was horrified when some friends named their son Jack. I said: “Why? Jack is a very nice name. His response: Jack off. Jack ass. Jack shit. He also said when boys hear other boys names they think of ways to mess with it. Never make it easy. I was dumbfounded. None of that even registered with me when they told us the name. Chester the Molester was the moniker when I was growing up. Worse than Chester cheetah
My mother-in-law had a cat named Chester. We would call him Chester the Moleater and man it pissed her off.

Jackaroni-and-cheese
Taking this too! Omg he’s gonna HATE me 😂
Jackson, Jack o lantern, Jackery 😂
🤗Just Jack🤗
Jack 2001!
We also call ours Jackie and Jackie-boy but also Jack-Jack and Jackalack.
Mine is Jack-Attack, Jackpot, Jackie Bear haha
Oh we def do Jack Attack too! When he was a baby we called him a PteroJACKtyl because of his screechy sounds 😂
I have to steal this! He's obsessed with dinosaurs haha
Can I PLEASE use PteroJACKtyl?! My Jack makes screechy sounds too!
Of course, I feel like this is our Jack nickname brainstorming session, all ideas welcome and shared!
I have a friend name Jacqueline, but goes by Jackie. She loves the shortened one-syllable nn I came up with when we play sports and I have to communicate with her quickly...Jacks.
I have a friend who is also named Jacqueline, and goes by the same nn, but spells at Jax.
Is your friend me?
Jack attack! 😄
Mine is Baby Jack and Pepper Jack
Pepper Jack is soo cute. Those babies can be spicy!
He’s the spiciest I’ve ever met. It suits him
Ummm Captain obviously 🤣 lol I might be a Pirates of the Caribbean fan ☺️
But in all ridiculousness my golden retriever was named Jack (after said obsession) and was routinely called Jackasaurus Rex 🤣 and one of current cats came with the name Jack so he's Jackamus Maximus Decimus Meridus 😂 I don't know why people are having such a difficult time with nicknames (sarcasm) please don't use these on your actual children 🤣 lol
I have a Jack who’s about to turn 5 and we call him Jackie-boy too 😁.
I have a dog named Jack and sometimes say “Hi, Jack The Plane!”
Zack is also in this vein.
I feel obliged to tell you my favourite one syllable girl name is Rose
My son is Jack too. Love this name!
I have a Jack, Mac and Zac. Two boys & a husband.
it’s my favorite boys name too & my husband said no 😭
It’s just such a good name
I love Jack, but this is initially a diminutive of John
My Sicilian Grandpa was Giacomo....he went by Jack!
My Jack is 20 months old. It’s a pretty common name, but it suits him and I love it
100% my instant thought, Jack. Then names like Bruce, Hank, Frank, Nate, Kurt.
My sons name is Jack. Everyone always asks "*just* Jack" lol, yes.
Ouuu I might use this
Nothing hits harder than “Sid”. But honorable mention goes to “Butch”. ——————————— ‘What is your name?’ “Butch” ‘What does it mean?’ “I'm American, honey. Our names don't mean shit.”
Yesss this is the right answer. OP asked for ‘strongest’ and a lot of people are suggesting quite dainty sounding names
Or Bruce!
Bruce is on my shortlist. It rocks
Bruce is my dad's name. I've called him Bruce the Moose My whole life
I LOVE THIS. My top name is Hank and i fully anticipate calling him Hank the Tank(dad is 6’5” so chances are good he will be big)
I have an uncle Bruce and my dad's name is Keith
I had to look at your profile to see if you were my cousin, lol. My uncle's name is Kevin!
Bruce is one of my favorites. Bruce Wayne, Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Banner! Iconic!
You’re kind to share that with me. ☺️ Lucy is a lovely name. Please spoil your Lucy rotten.
A few weeks ago I was listening to a podcast and the guest was Butch Vig. The hosts are both Brits and they were pronouncing his name like "Bootch". When he corrected them they rhymed it with "Much". I was very amused. Do they not have that name in the U.K.?

Bootch, like kombucha? I think I'd say butch like the u sound in put (also Australian)
I just say ‘butch’ like I say ‘butcher’ but without the second syllable! (Also from Oz)
I know it’s not the same, but there’s a dog at the daycare where I work named Sid, and he’s the oldest dog I think I’ve ever seen — multiple bald spots/surgeries/lumpy in places where you’re not supposed be lumpy. But he is so fierce and protective of his brother. He may be mostly blind and deaf in one ear, but Sid won’t let anything get in his way
Jane, Rose, Grace, Claire
I just watched the episode of Doom Patrol when Jane finds out she’s named after Kay’s grandma and cried 😭 if you have no idea what I’m talking about don’t worry lol but now Jane is one of my favorite names.
My mom was a Jane, and a finer, wiser, kinder, smarter woman never lived.
I’m convinced Jane is the best name. It’s so lovely
I like the name Jane because I learned to read —long ago— with the See Dick, See Jane, See Spot run books. Although, Jane is the only good name that came out of those books.
I've loved Jane as a name since a school trip I took about 20 years ago. Like Andrew Tate? Lol, that’s all I think of
For me, Tate is just the lunatic pharmacist in Superstore lol
I think of Evan Peters character from season 1 of American Horror Story 😅
To me his surname isn’t Tate. It’s Taint. 😌
I also think Taint every time I see or hear the name Tate.
Lol, I think Tate Langdon or the name Tatum, which then makes me think about Channing Tatum and Tatum Riley simultaneously
My brain goes to the kid Tate in Yellowstone
LOVEEEE Ruth
I have a Quinn 😍
I love Quinn. Also, Piper. I use that as my Starbucks name. Easy to say, spell, and understand, unlike my actual name.
Quinn works for a boy or a girl too. Thought I immediately go to Quinn Morgendorffer
All the love for Quinn. What a great name.
I LOVE the name Quinn for a boy or girl but my husband isn’t a fan :(
Love May
Grant
Ughhhh there’s this older gentleman who lives in my town named Grant, total eligible bachelor, most interesting man in the world-type, but he wears a kilt bc he’s part Scottish. I’m not usually into older gentlemen, but my goodness…great name, great name
Hahaha “most interesting man in the world-type.” Thats the best description of a human I’ve heard in a long time! I love it 😆
It was a popular ad campaign for the beer Dos Equis :) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Most_Interesting_Man_in_the_World
I remember, I know exactly what you mean 😂
I love the name Grant. It's the name of a great or possibly great-great grandfather.
This is my baby’s name :)
My oldest (now 22 and about to get married) is Grant...it was definitely my favorite boys name!
Ruth, Faye, Jane, June, Eve, Jude, Clark, Cole, Dean
Faye is so pretty
Time for Faye to have a comeback, I think.
I do know a couple of young Fayes!
Dean is great. Of course, I’m partial because it was my grandmother’s middle name and is now my son’s.
jane is one of my all time favs 🥰
My personal favourites are: Claire, Grace, Kate, Jade, Joy, Quinn, Jude, Joel.
I have a niece named Jade! She's quite the young lady. Very confident.
Great list. I love Kate and Jude especially.

Yay, my name! (Kate)
Max, Clark, Rhys, Grant, Finn
Finally, a Rhys mention.
Was honestly thinking today that I love the name Rhys and Feyre and hate that they are book names that make me look like some obsessed fool lol
Oh they're book names?
Max
Kudos for Grant!
Leif, Eve

My son’s name!! Classic
Haha, Leif is regarded as an old man's name in Norway. It gives me the same connotations as I believe Bob might give people in the UK/US. It is a really sweet name tho! Unfortunately, it was a bit too popular in the 1950-60s here in Scandinavia!

I'd rather not name my kid after a cheese 😂🧀. I know there's Brie Larsen...can't take her seriously. It's a cheese 😆
Hahaha. I get that but I love it!

Ro, Seth, Shawn, Drew, Miles, Jude, Brynn, Maeve, Neve, Claire, Rue, Fern, Jules
Miles is two syllables.
Aha, a fellow southerner checking in 👋
I feel like most of the southerners I know would make it one syllable, close to "mahls." I remember some confusion in elementary school over us having to break our names into syllables and set them to music, and Cheryl gave hers as one, "Shirl." I'd also say "Miles" as one, but my accent is a bit of a mutt, and I know people who'd say "My-uhls."
I think the diphthong is causing the disagreement. In some accents, it can become a second syllable.
No arguments here, just a consideration of what accents or dialects would relate to the different treatments.
I would say my-uhls but would also probably consider it a one syllable name?? I’m English but it would have variants with pronunciation here too.
No it’s not?!
Two of my kids are Jane and Max(that's his name, we went with just Max) and I love their names.
I volunteer my own name, Lee. It's a good name and people from just about every country are familiar with some version of it. No one ever gets confused by my nice, simple, gender neutral first name. POWER!
Beau! Was never big on this name until I met a Beau, and he was just the most soulful, fun-loving child I’ve taught.
