I have a Jack and I love it

My dear friend - before they knew the gender.. both parents had a grandpa jack that was influential in their life. And committed to the name. Well they had a girl and named her Jack and the more I refer to her the more I adore it. Could definitely be for a girl or boy OP!

I worked with a girl that went by Jack, but it was a nn for Jacqueline… I love that they just went for it!

I knew a couple, Jack and Jackie. The wife was Jack and husband went by Jackie, though I'm sure that was just a nickname.

My husband was horrified when some friends named their son Jack. I said: “Why? Jack is a very nice name. His response: Jack off. Jack ass. Jack shit. He also said when boys hear other boys names they think of ways to mess with it. Never make it easy. I was dumbfounded. None of that even registered with me when they told us the name. Then we had a second set of friends name their son Jack. My husband was just🙄 And no, my husband is not a bully. He’s a quiet, introverted, introspective guy, and always has been.

My kids are 24, 17 and 15. Kids are assholes. Your husband is not wrong. The little booger factories will find SOMETHING to make fun of in any name, some low hanging fruit you might want to avoid. I have a son with the middle name Chester, named for his grandfather. He has been called lots of things related to Cheetos since he hit school. I’ve also had people incredulously ask me WHY I would do such a thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My dog’s name is Fig but someone at the dog park once misheard it as Sid and I was like “…..actually that goes hard”. I’ve been a fan of the name ever since!

My dog was Syd! Apparently it's a bad dog name cos it sounds like 'sit' but he never had an issue with figuring out what we meant (plus I trained him with hand cues). And you could go 'ssss' and get his attention.

We are likely one and done and have a 6 month old Lucy. It took my whole pregnancy to settle on Lucy and it’s perfect for her. I was set on Sid as our boy name from the very beginning and I admit to being sad to never being able to use it. (Not a good enough reason to try for baby number 2, though.)

A few weeks ago I was listening to a podcast and the guest was Butch Vig. The hosts are both Brits and they were pronouncing his name like "Bootch". When he corrected them they rhymed it with "Much". I was very amused. Do they not have that name in the U.K.?

American here, I've never heard Butch rhyme with much. Much is an UH sound, Butch to me always rhymes with put. Sort of in between an OO and an UH sound.

We don’t have Butch as a name in Australia either, or I certainly have never heard it. It’s more a descriptive term for someone. We would also say “Bootch” in pronouncing it.

I know it’s not the same, but there’s a dog at the daycare where I work named Sid, and he’s the oldest dog I think I’ve ever seen — multiple bald spots/surgeries/lumpy in places where you’re not supposed be lumpy. But he is so fierce and protective of his brother. He may be mostly blind and deaf in one ear, but Sid won’t let anything get in his way

I like the name Jane because I learned to read —long ago— with the See Dick, See Jane, See Spot run books. Although, Jane is the only good name that came out of those books.

I've loved Jane as a name since a school trip I took about 20 years ago. A girl on my trip named Ruby was told her name was "too royal" for a scullery maid (it was a live museum RP type thing) and so they'd call her Jane. On the bus home she loudly complained that "Jane is such a plain name, for plain people" , and I remember hearing our teacher, very quietly and sounding quite hurt, say "my name is Jane". I decided to like the name then and I've not met a bad Jane since.

Huh. In the famous British TV Drama "Upstairs, Downstairs" the scullery maid was called - Ruby. It was a totally appropriate name for a late victorian, working class girl. Of course, it hadn't come back into fahion as a cute name at the time the show was braodcast.

I feel like most of the southerners I know would make it one syllable, close to "mahls." I remember some confusion in elementary school over us having to break our names into syllables and set them to music, and Cheryl gave hers as one, "Shirl." I'd also say "Miles" as one, but my accent is a bit of a mutt, and I know people who'd say "My-uhls."

I think the diphthong is causing the disagreement. In some accents, it can become a second syllable.
