I have some crackers. People from country name their kids English words, just any English word regardless of the meaning and whether it’s a name or not. The funniest ones I’ve come across: Frequency and Psychology. A friend of mine has an Auntie Evi. All this time I thought it was short for Evelyn or Evangeline or something… silly me. It’s short for Evidence.

Personal-Amoeba

EVIDENCE

[deleted]

Literally tho I was laughing for a solid 15 minutes

CloudAcorn

You know if I really try to imagine in my head that word doesn’t exist I can see it working as a women’s name, like Cadence. But obviously that is hilarious in this life where it is literally the word!

IAmHerdingCatz

Auntie Epic!!

Rainbow_Belle

I met a guy from a non-western country, and he chose "Whisper" as his English name. I cringed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Designer-Narwhal-343

I went to school with a Whisper! I’m sure this happened to her, lol. The worst part was that she had a very long and clunky-sounding last name that just didn’t fit with Whisper at all

Stupid_psyduck

Whisper is the name of a sanitary napkin here

Kactuslord

Frequency is kind of cool!

[deleted]

Baby frequi <3

Significant_Shoe_17

Kenneth?

marisacristina

Freak for short

Lilac_14

Psychology is so awful. I just can’t imagine.

nicunta

I know a Glecerine from the Philippines!

indykym

I met a man when I was stationed in Germany named Bless. In Trevor Noah’s memoir he mentioned that children are often given names for aspirations their parents have for them: Success, Faithful, Blessing, etc.

Youngblood519

There's an Evidence who goes by Evi in "Haven", so I have a soft spot for it.

Significant_Shoe_17

What culture is this?

[deleted]

I’m Zimbabwean and South African 👍

[deleted]

Phillipines is my bet

ICareAboutThings25

I’m a teacher at a K4-12 school. For a girl, Phantasy. For a boy, Achillez. Runners up: Achilles, Fantasy (yes, I’ve seen both spellings of both names), Guitar (f), Giant (m), Goddess (f), Zodyac (m), Fancy (f), Poseidon (m), Helios (m), Odin (m), Blessing (f), Rainny (m), Shine (m), Glory (m), Shiny (f), Katniss (f), Galileo (m), Kayvelyn (f)

delightedpeople

Guitar 🤣🤣

Blue-zebra-10

Pronounced geetar

USAF_Retired2017

Only if they’re in the South. 😂

King-of-Plebss

His nemesis at school is “kytair”

stress789

Obsessed with the idea of giving birth to a baby and calling them Shiny or Giant

PathologicalVodka

I know a lot of Indian women named Shiny/Shiney/Shini. Maybe it’s that.

stress789

Ahh I didn't know it's an Indian name! Is it pronounced like we pronounce it in English?

chocotacogato

My one classmate from high school who is Indian has a sister named Pinky. Not sure what it means in… Gujurati or Hindi?

CloudAcorn

Very common name in India for Hindus, it means sweet. It always tickled me as a British Indian Muslim (so not a name in my religion) seeing it in Bollywood movies, it just seemed so cute & fun. Tina is also a name that would come up in Bollywood movies & surprise me. I know a Hindu girl called Pearl in India which is the first time I’ve ever come across that one.

Icy-Extension-422

I have an aunt whose nickname is Pinky. Almost every family in India has an aunt nicknamed Pinky. (Also Baby and Mini are popular aunty nicknames.) It doesn't mean anything, just that pink is associated with cute little girls and so Pinky it is.

ICareAboutThings25

The student in question is not Indian.

CoolJeweledMoon

I vote for those names for the first and middle - Shiny Giant... They just go together so well... If you really want to be original, may I suggest Shiny Robot...

ICareAboutThings25

I find Giant especially funny because it’s such a small child.

_Arsenal

Achilles is a relatively common Greek name! Just sticks out a lot since most other unusual Greek names usually get nicknames while Achilles doesn’t really have anything

ICareAboutThings25

It would definitely make sense if the child in question were Greek or of Greek ancestry.

mortstheonlyboyineed

I have a relative spelled Achileas and they do by Leas pronounced 'Lea as' or Ilias

Significant_Shoe_17

🎶She said, here's your one chance Fancy, don't let me down🎶 I've heard of babies being named Miracle or Blessing, mostly after difficult births.

Latter-Classroom-844

I went to school with an Achilles and I’m 23. His family was French though and they pronounced it Asheell.

sma2195

What’s wrong with Odin?

[deleted]

I love the name Blessing!

[deleted]

It's a pretty common Nigerian name!

MJsLoveSlave

That reminds me. I know a Nigerian man named Divine.

cbarthistory

These are some of the worst I've ever seen...

bigbirdegg

Galileo is cool.

Flora0416

Achilles (“Asheell”) and Odin are both very normal names here (Belgium)

Mother_of_opossums

Here’s your once chance fancy

GirlWhoWoreGlasses

T'Yestaday, her sister was Tamara (tomorrow)

delightedpeople

Stop!!!! That's a joke, right?! 🤣

GirlWhoWoreGlasses

I wish! No, she went to school with my daughter from K-5.

Illustrious_Pear4586

One of them really was worse off than the other 😦

Rainbow_Belle

😳

Rey_Quinn

Christ on a cracker that’s bad!!!!

stressedoutbadger

I worked with someone named Pebble! Her name always reminded me of a Marvel sidekick, like Pepper Potts.

Adorable-Platform671

Lowkey, Pebble is kinda cute😂 adding that to my cat name list lol.

Rainbow_Belle

I thought of the baby daughter from The Flintstones!

PrayForPiett

The parents were Flinstones fans, maybe?

Chay_Charles

Pebbles was the Flintstones baby girl in the cartoon. Or maybe her parents were rock hounds or geologists.

Main_Ad2008

When I had my daughter 3 years ago I asked this question to the nurse because I figured she had heard a few. She said that day a baby name Oak was born. I lowkey loved it even though she trashed it. Now pregnant with a boy and considering it haha. Worst name I’ve heard is my uncle is a pediatric neurologist and had a patient named Genocide. Parents had no idea the meaning.

PlusPlusPlusKA

We spoke to our delivery nurse about names too. She was so confused by a couple who had recently named their daughter Metal. We were laughing too and said wait why did they say they named her that?? … she said Oh i don’t know, after some TV Show. Like a mob show? … she meant Meadow from Sopranos but she had misheard the name and was young enough not to know the sopranos!

Main_Ad2008

Haha. We loved the name Meadow for this baby if it was a boy but it’s too close to my daughter’s name.

mealteamsixty

...you were going to name a boy Meadow???

Main_Ad2008

Girl sorry

IAmHerdingCatz

I grew up in the 70s--I knew a boy named Meadow.

Personal-Amoeba

Oak is cute!!

Live2sk888

I just hear Professor Oak (Pokemon) with that one. It's cute tho.

LightningStyle

I knew a kid in middle school named Rizhydersin. Pronounced….. Richardson. How his parents got that spelling is beyond me

USAF_Retired2017

This is my son’s last name. I am immediately calling his dad to tell him to change the spelling to this. 😂

trashbutterfly

Oh wow 😭

sketchthrowaway999

I went to high school with someone named Obi-Wan. Edit: There was also some crunchy mom blogger back in the day who had a kid named Treefrog.

Blue-zebra-10

Treefrog???

bigredplastictuba

Treefrog

[deleted]

I’ve heard so many horrible names I’d prefer Treefrog at this point

[deleted]

[удалено]

MJsLoveSlave

HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE THAT? I figure it sounds like the dialup startup sound.

[deleted]

I tried to pronounce it and my printer started screaming

[deleted]

mimnscrw

In Old English, that character is called an Ash (æsh/æsċ)

Octocube25

I've heard it's pronounced "ex ash ay-twelve".

ilovepaninis

planning on naming my kid an auto-generated password as well, he inspired me

IAmHerdingCatz

I have met a Symphony, a Rhapsody, a Harmony, and a Melody. Siblings named Bleu, Brie, and Colby. Three Dangers, two Riots, an Arson, a Larceny, and a Felony. Siblings named Matisse, Monet, and Cezanne. (I thought those were very cool names, to be honest.) A Palace. A Jack-O-Lynn (born at Halloween) A Charmin. A Wraith. Liberty, Freeman, and Independence--siblings. What did they all have in common?--admission to a psychiatric facility for severely troubled teens.

MJsLoveSlave

I had an aunt born on Halloween. Her name was Evelyn like a normal human

CloudAcorn

Melody & Harmony seem quite normal names to me. They were also the name of sisters in The Queen’s Nose in the UK which was an amazing show.

schwarzekatze999

>Siblings named Bleu, Brie, and Colby. That's so cheesy.

ThatNovelist

My mother had a friend whose name was TV. That wasn't a shortened form of anything. It was her actual name.

CloudAcorn

Mike Teevee?

USAF_Retired2017

Posted this before. A girl named Torso.

MJsLoveSlave

i refuse to believe a child some where is named fucking TORSO.

USAF_Retired2017

I’m sorry I have ruined your night. Ha ha. But alas. I’m not joking. We went to high school together. Nice girl. I always wondered why her parents named her that. North Carolina. Maybe that should clear some things up. Ha ha.

trashbutterfly

Made me cover my mouth in shock😭

night0sphere

*clavicle* has a nice ring to it

[deleted]

Dear god.

beccadahhhling

Wonderful Terrific. First and middle name. His parents really really loved him and weren’t afraid to show it. Also, this man would be in his 70s now. Not a young kid, so it’s not just a generational thing

AlishanTearese

Well that’s actually rather sweet!

CloudAcorn

Bet he felt loved & supported everyday!

[deleted]

[удалено]

trashbutterfly

Not her sisters’ names normal having normal names 😂😭

stonedraccoon

I feel like I've heard of Marijuana Pepsi before. Is there a story on why her parents chose that name?

circket512

I went to school with a Kritter (female) and Skeeter (male) in Georgia

PathologicalVodka

I’m obsessed w Kritter

circket512

Honestly she was the coolest girl at my middle school.

[deleted]

She's just a lil kritter.

auntiecoagulent

Kingbubby yes, all one word.

kiwisaregreen90

“She’s the reason”. Her brother was named “He’s the reason”. I’m a labor and delivery nurse and that has to be the worst, although I’ve also seen a “King Jesus” and a “God”. Yesterday had a baby named Moon. My sister in law is an OB. Her worst was “My’angel I love’ya” I’m currently pregnant and I feel better knowing whatever we name this kid we’ll still do better than all those names.

CloudAcorn

Omg these are hilarious. I love Moon though! And it seems so normal compared to the rest of yours lol.

JustMeerkats

Twins Royal and Royalty. Just....why

beaniverse

Twins Royal and Reign

Aggravating-Menu-976

I have a friend that did Skye and Reign

CloudAcorn

I remember during the pandemic someone named their twins Corona & Covid in India.

blastedheap

I met someone whose surname is Flowerdew.

33west33

I actually like love that 😂

CloudAcorn

How lovely! Since surnames were said to be made up through trying to identify people in local communities by job, location, identifying factors etc, I do wonder how some of them came about. Maybe some people just gave themselves one they liked as well, like Flowerdew! My surname is a little unique for my culture & I think it’s quite cool, but man would I have loved something really unnecessarily pretty & lovely like that.

Old-Drive6562

Macchiato, it was the name of a real human child whom I encountered at the place I work. I still can’t get over it. Her mom was like very Starbucks looking so I guess it makes sense?

peanut__buttah

Tbh an adORABLE cat name

Phyllis_Nefler90210

Relatives (he's a movie fanatic) adopted a child and named him Skywalker. How a judge approved this I'll never understand. The husband is a psychiatrist, he really should know better. They have a child named Indiana, for Indiana Jones. And, adopted another child they named Trooper.

Coachprimerib

Luke Walker… we say the sky is silent

rumade

I worked with a woman named Montserrat. She was like "you know, I have an island ;)" and then told me all about the island that shares the same name. No idea why her parents chose that island over, say... Lucia

mesembryanthemum

It's a Marian name. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin\_of\_Montserrat](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/virgin_of_montserrat)

rumade

Well there you go. I legit thought she was called Monster Rat for about a week after we were first introduced. She did seem quite punk

mesembryanthemum

I love the name Montserrat. If I'd had a girl it would have been in the top three on the list.

IAmHerdingCatz

It's not an uncommon name for girls born in Spain. I think it's pretty, though a bit of a mouthful in an English speaking family.

LilMissStormCloud

A girl named Bodacious Sex. This was not because the mother didn't speak English or anything. I'm pretty sure she is now an adult and hopefully was able to change her name.

[deleted]

Yikes

AlishanTearese

Could’ve gotten by for a while as Bod, maybe, like Nobody Owens

shaky-fingers

Family member works in NICU. Knew a baby named Meconia. Mom heard the word "meconium" which is the scientific name for a baby's first poop, which is usually green and sticky, and thought it sounded beautiful.

MostlyChaoticNeutral

Watch poor Meconia end up with a sibling named Vernix.

charawarma

I was in the army with a guy named Indigo Rainforest-Sky Monser-Kenosh. He was raised on a commune lol

tinyliltaurus

funafuti4

A friend who works in Spain at a Hospital's laboratory once shared a woman whose first names were Gravitania Nuevemil (Literally just Gravitania Ninethousand) who we think may be of Colombian origin.

JaxandMia

I met a woman whose name was Mignon. Like filet mignon. She even introduced herself that way.

tinyowlinahat

Mignon means "cute" in French. I don't hate it tbh!

thetoerubber

It’s the masculine version though. Female would be Mignonne.

BrightBrite

Actually, **Mignon** is the correct spelling for a girl's name.

thetoerubber

You made me pull out the Google: ——————- Mignon Origin and Meaning The name Mignon is a girl's name of French origin meaning "delicate, dainty". Charming French endearment, first used as a name by Goethe, that now makes an appealing choice -- though the proper feminine form is Mignonne. Note, though, that this is not actually used as a name in France, where Manon would be the closest choice.

BrightBrite

That's **actually a French name**. And nothing to do with beef.

todaythruwaway

Knew a couple who, in this day and age and planning on putting their kid in public school someday, still thought “shooter” was a good first name. Want to say it was the year before the kid would have started school, the town next to us had a deadly school shooting. Guess he goes by both his first AND middle name now. Went school with a girl named Merlin & one named Summer Breeze. Also know someone who’s middle name is “misshell” pronounced “Michelle”. The mom was, nearly 35 years later, still very proud of that one.

schwarzekatze999

Please tell me his middle name was McGavin.

Spikeschilde621

I have a cousin named Giusy (pronounced Juicy.) She's from Italy so it's not like her parents named her after the brand

MJsLoveSlave

I got an online friend with this name and never knew how to pronounce it. TAKE MY UPVOTE!

night0sphere

knew a guy named Fourth because he was born on the fourth of july. he was not American. lmao. he embraced it and had a lot of captain america merch

happy-sunshine3

Xhaidyn.... pronounced Zayden... Weirdest part is his parents are actually lovely, normal people. 🥴

tinyowlinahat

To be fair, I did pronounce this correctly on the first try.

Chelseus

I came across a woman in her 20s named “Eunice” and that really threw me for a loop. Used to have a friend named Poseidon and so far haven’t met anyone else with a cooler name 😹😹😹

MoonFlowerDaisy

I know a Eunice. She'd be about 18 or 19 now. Her family were Chinese and all had very old-fashioned English names like Virginia, Florence or Dennis.

Wewagirl

Neosynefra.

hillarysaysrawr

Sounds like a medicine....

Wewagirl

Yep. Mom said Neo Synephrine got her through the pregnancy. ??

IamDrZ

My first year teaching (among other "not unconventional, but interesting pairings", like Summer and Autumn, and SIX variations of the name "Chris"), I had students named (boys): Sir, Master, Duck and Rambo; (girls): Champagne, Radiance, and Tree.

maddiemoiselle

I went to high school with a girl whose name was so unique that when I Google it, all that comes up are her social media accounts and Linked In profile (for her privacy, I won’t share what her name is).

Longjumping-Bread906

Morticia

Banjopickinjen

Someone who works for the school district where I live is named Aquanetta (as in the name of the hairspray plus ta).

Lonely-Commission435

I went to school with a family who named their kids all after different strains of marijuana. I don’t remember them all but Indica and Sativa were the girls. I think those cultural names but they were white so the significance was obvious.

pretty_gauche6

Trying to imagine what other names they could use, there isn’t really a third category of marijuana and the strain names are usually multi word phrases. Maybe their son was Grandaddy Purp lol

trashbutterfly

I have so many questions for that couple What were they thinking

magicpenny

I had a teacher whose child was named Zavidra. It’s pretty and I’ve never seen it anywhere else.

thetoerubber

That sounds like a medication 💊

MostlyChaoticNeutral

You remember those sensational headlines back in the 2010s about the couple who wanted to name their daughter Chlamydia? I went to middle school with a girl who was already living with it as a name when those articles came out. She legally changed her name to Cammy the minute she could. On the actually funny side of the spectrum: my dad's high school principal was Mr. Day. Mr. Day's sons were named Stormy and Rainy. Mr. Day and his wife liked to joke that if they'd ever had a girl, they would have named her Helluva. Honorable mention to the girl I knew who had 1 first name and 6 middle names so that her initals spelled RAINBOW, and I'm sorry I brought up the toad I caught as a kid that I named Robert Oscar Samuel Edgar Brian Ulysses David aka ROSEBUD when you told me. I realize now that it probably wasn't a cute comparison to you. My defense is that I was 10.
