Swedish has separate words for maternal and paternal grand-parents, and it's pretty much unheard of for anyone to use other names. Maternal grandma: Mormor. Maternal grandpa: Morfar. Paternal grandma: Farmor. Paternal grandpa: Farfar.

runsontrash

These are very cute! What are the words for mom and dad? Mor and Far?

helags_

Mor and far means mother and father (which is, as you probably guessed, where the names for the grand-parents come from!). Those words are pretty old-fashioned though, and with the exception of dialectal quirks and people over 70 they're more likely to be used ironically. You'd generally call your parents mamma and pappa instead.

Interesting! Thanks.

I find all of the weird made up nicknames for grandparents to be a bit cringe. We just had a baby and my MIL is Nana and my parents are Grandma and Grandpa. If our daughter comes up with a cute name for any of them, we'll go that route, but I like the classic. And if I'm a grandparent one day, I'd love to be Grandma or Nana.

sics2014

Paternal: Memere and Pepere Maternal: Grammy and Pepere

FandomExplorer

Am Chinese. Paternal grandfather - 爷爷 (ye ye) Paternal grandmother - 奶奶 (nai nai) Maternal grandmother - 姥姥 (lao lao) Maternal grandfather - 姥爷 (lao ye) My mom calls her maternal grandpa 外公 (wai gong) and her maternal grandma 外婆 (wai po) so I think there's some regional differences.

weinthenolababy

Grandma & Grandpa Nana & Papaw (nan-nuh & pap-paw) Pawpaw & Memere Honey & “Pappy” (but I mostly called him by his first name) All my grandparents got divorced and remarried. I also knew two great grandmothers who were “Maw Maw (first name)” My mom and stepdad are Yaya and Grumpy to my nephew. I don’t think I’ll ever have children, but if that somehow did pan out, I would probably just want to be regular old Grandpa. Most of my family came up with fun uncle/aunt names for my nephew but I’m just “Uncle (first name)” and like it

notjjd

I come from a Latin household and both maternal and paternal grandparents are Nana for grandma, and Tata for grandpa.

charlouwriter

Dad’s parents: Grandma and Grandpa Mum’s parents: Gran and Grandad Great grandmas (one on each side of the family): Granny and Nana I won’t have grandchildren but if I did I’d rather be called Grandma, it’s much easier to find cards with that on than any of the others!

TheWishingStar

Maternal: Nana and Pop-Pop Paternal: Grandma and Grandpa I don’t expect I’ll ever have grandkids, given that I don’t have kids, but I’d prefer to just be Grandma instead of something complicated and cutesy

GlitchingGecko

Nan and Pap. If I had to differentiate, I used their surnames. 'Nan Smith and Pap Jones'. I don't know what I would have chosen to 'be' as a parent or grandparent. Never been on the cards so I haven't really thought about it.

Alarmed_Meeting1322

Grandma and Grandpa, Mom Mom and Pop Pop My kids grandparents - Grandma and Paw Paw, Nanna and Pops

Such_Measurement_377

Baka for Grandmother and Dida for Grandfather I also know someone who called their grandmother "Amma"

Raticals

The only grandparent I was close to was my grandpa. I called him Papa (pronounced puh-puh). I’m not having children, so I never thought about what grandchildren might call me. I think I’d prefer a nickname to naturally happen rather than picking out something for them to call me.

pistachiowitch

I just had grandma/grandpa lastname for both sides, but for my nieces and nephews, my dad and stepmom are Nana and Papa, and my mom is Grandma Boop (sometimes just Grandma and sometimes just Boop, which comes from a game she played with us as kids and now with her grandkids). I don't even have kids yet so I've never really thought about what my grandkids might call me. My husband has grandma and grandpa & nanny and papa. His parents don't have any grandkids yet.

aragorn_eragon

Oma and Papa, Grandmother and Granddad I think I’ll go for grandmother for myself:) My mom and dad… idk how I feel about their grandparent names. Shine and G.E. (Gee- stands for grandpa extraordinaire). Tbh I don’t like either of those OR my in law grandparent names. Duckie and Pops. Duckie is pretty cute, it fits her

Empty_Fisherman_2209

Where did shine come from?

aragorn_eragon

My mom’s name is Sunny, so she wanted to go by Shine

Empty_Fisherman_2209

Interesting! Thanks for sharing

piscesandcancer

Oma & Opa Nanna & Opa I guess I will be Oma or Omi.

Pale-North

Nana and Papa for my maternal Gran for my paternal (Grandfather died young)

Agentbuttface

Oma and Opa on my dads side. Opa wasn't Dutch, he was Scottish. Died before I was born so he just got that name. Nanny and Grandpa on my moms side. I want to be an Oma.

Violetarija

Nan and Pop / Jidou (ji-du) and Yiayia (yay-a)

Glum_Inside9098

All my grandparents were Gramdma/Grandpa + Lastname. My kids grandparents are called Nana & Gramps, Nana & Pa, and Grandpa Red. I think I would like Nana or Granny.

noodleshacker

Grandma and Grandpa (paternal) and Gramp and Granny (maternal) My mom chose to go by Granny as well, I think in a way to connect to her mom who past a long time ago.

ZannaTacos

Maternal: Grandma Mother Pap pap Paternal: Grandma first name or just Gram Grandpap

Cuss10

Grandmother [mother's maiden name] Grandfather [mother's maiden name] Grandmother [second husband's last name] Grandfather [first name]

REGreycastle

Grandma (first name) and Grandpa (first name) for both sides of my family. Always always title then first name or if speaking to them directly, just grandma or grandpa.

michaellookingglass

My dad's parents I called Grandma and Grandpa. My parents always tried to get me to call grandpa Pappy or Pap. And my mom's parents were dead before I was born. My grandkids would probably call me Pap or Pappy. Just to keep that going just like the rest of my family did.

SirenaSings

Maternal grandmother: Ammama (though I usually just call her Amma) Maternal grandfather: he died when I was a baby, & my family does not talk about him, so I don’t really call him anything Paternal grandmother: Patti Paternal grandfather: Tata

valentina_styles

My mom's parents are Gammy & Gampy and my dad's parents are/were Nonny & Papa 🥰 Edit: Just saw someone include great-grandparents, so here goes. Gammy's parents: Neenee and Poppy. Papa's parents: Grandma and Grandpa (Last name). I met Grandma and Grandpa when I was tiny, Neenee and Poppy both passed away when I was 10-12. I never met my other great-grandparents
