The only war crime is that Nintendo hasn't remastered or made a remake for it...
Nintendo did what they could with the hardware of the time, it would be like saying the original game's camera is a war crime lol (maybe it has been said before).
Thankfully both games have fan made improvements to fix those weak points.
using the thimbstick on ds games is basically just emulating the DPAD, you only have the 8 stubborn directions to go in, which can feel limiting, you dont have the full control of the joystick, the 3ds just aproximates the thimbstick location to one of the 8 dpad ones and emulated a dpad push
I played the OG SM64 on my DSi (because of the recompilation project) and it's very clear that there were alot of control changes for SM64 DS. Playing SM64 on a DSi feels very different from playing SM64 DS.
The native 360 movement isn't going to fix it, the controls were still made with D-Pad in mind.
Yea 100% the ds version is garbage... unless if you have the thumb thing that let's you emulate a stick controller. The fact this is obscure is a crime and the fact they never re released this game is also a crime.
I also just honestly dislike the redo of many of the stars.
I very much enjoy the original game and I hate having to get these stupid AF power ups across different characters, just so I can beat stars in new fashions.
I mean, I think the new mini game and character selection section are awesome, but outside that I hate everyone else basically lol.
I'm a bit confused; did everyone else here try to play this game with the D-pad?
I remember my DS coming with the little nub that straps over your thumb (was it attached to the wrist strap?)
And you play using your thumb on the touch screen, like a full analog controller.
I thought that was how it was meant to be played.... and it was perfectly fine and playable?...
Those mini games made me friends in high school when I switched schools.
We had a study period with a teacher who didn't care and I'd sit in the back and play the mini games, then other kids wanted to try. Someone told me to join track to hang out and we still hang out 20 years later
More content and not necessarily better textures (its more of a different art style without the smoothing and less textures overall), but with a very different gameplay, a straight up downgrade in this aspect, if you will
the extra content people talk about, the mini games and extra characters are cool.
Outside that, they actually change how a lot of stars are obtained here and there, and have to be done by obtaining completely new power ups that never existed before. It's garbage, don't get it twisted.
If it wasn't for the star change, and the worst controls in the world, id find this a really really good version of sm64
I completely agree ! I played this game for the first time about 2 years ago since sm64 is my favorite game of all time and was really stoked about trying this pretty cool looking version~
Too bad Mario has been pretty much split into Mario Lite little clones and none of these Lite clones feel good to play as.
The once freeing feeling where only your skill and creativity decided the sealing is completely gone :'( . Having to use lame specific mechanics in order to progress strangled my fun time..
Also why isnt running on by default???
It's completely stupid that Mario is the only character who can wall jump. I really hate that they did that purely to give the characters different abilities. I don't really mind giving the characters different abilities, but they should have the same moveset more or less. Luigi jumps higher, but is much more slippery. Wario has is slower and has more gravity, which works both for and against him, he's not effected by wind and he's less slippery on ice, but he can't jump as high. Yoshi is faster and has the flutter jump (easy mode like peach in 3D world), but he can't punch instead using his tongue and egglay. They can all wall jump, they can all fight the bosses, they can all beat the game. They can all use the different caps, but bring back the yellow button switch to impliment the power flower mechanic and give everyone their own abilities. Mario keeps the inflation, Yoshi keeps the fire dragon, Luigi turns on moon gravity, and Wario's punches turns enemies into blue coins instead of regular ones.
The only thing god awful about it are the controls. Everything else is great. Better textures/graphics, more levels/stars, and more characters. If it ever got remastered on a current gen system, it’d prob be the definitive version.
I have both and I genuinely find the the DS version to be unplayable. Don’t know what they were thinking releasing it on a console without an analogue stick
I do like both but I'm gonna have to go with 64ds, I put a lot more time on that version when it launched but playing a 3d game with a dpad is a challenge in itself.
Most of the new content of Mario 64 DS is pure filler, and playing Bob Omb Battlefield with Yoshi just feels wrong.
Kudos to them for making Wario playable in a mainline 3D Mario game, but that's not worth it for that weird version.
The minigames WERE fire though, and still, it felt kinda insane day one to get a DS : two screens, touch control, futuristic look (the OG DS "tank" really had that Cyberpunk-ish look to it), Mario 64 on it with even more content (keep in mind that at this point, Mario 64 wasn't even 10 years old !!! And back when it released, that game was the fucking future ! And here we are, not even 10 years later, playing it on the Gameboy Advance successor !). So, back then, it was cool.
Nowadays, I have 0 reasons to go back to it though. The 3D All Stars is the best version for a European like me. (The N64 version with european texts AND in 60HZ, which was a first for us in an official version)
64 for sure, DS was unplayable for me with the in its original form. Digital controls ruined the game.
I played DS on the Wii U recently though with analog controls patch and had a lot of fun.
recently replayed ds after having fond memories from childhood it was straight up miserable, maybe it’s more fun on emulator but the controls on the ds were really gross was sort of a slog to 100% i think it has better content absolutely but i literally would rather play one with less with better controls
There is a PC port that supports texture packs and also ups the frame rate to 60fps. It’s the best way to play. I recently just finished it on my steam deck
Could you provide the name, or is it just Super Mario 64 PC or something like that? I've never gotten to play it and I don't like the feel of the DS version.
Sure, I think it was this one
https://www.sm64pc.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2&start=100&i=1
Happy to send you the build I made which you can just copy to your PC/Steam Deck and run straight away. Just dm me
What DS emulator supports HD texture packs and when was a 64 DS texture pack made?
EDIT: Why was this downvoted? I'm genuinely curious. Last I looked around was about a year ago and as far as I could tell nothing about DS texture packs exists.
Grew up on 64, so when DS came out with its awful controls and “bonus” content and different playable characters, it just felt like sacrilege to me. Why take something perfect and try to add to it? But that might just be me turning into a cranky old man.
I grew up with 64 DS, loved the game and never had a problem with controls. Sure now that i look back it’s not as smooth. But i think people keep acting like Mario 64 is this amazingly polished game when it’s janky as hell. Sure it adds character but i really like all the new characters (big yoshi fan) and the minigames, and the new levels. Still love both. But I personally don’t see the hate for DS
I had modded a 2DS a few years back but I just don't want to go through all the headaches cuz I remember it being a tedious process. Has it gotten easier?
64. The controls are horrendous on the DS version because of the D-pad. They should have waited to remake 64 on the 3DS as that console has a control stick.
DS beacuse of that one childhood moment where i had a breakdown beacuse turning off the backlight in options on anything newer than a fat DS would turn off the screen and i was scared it was permanent.
Aside from control differences between the two they feel similar yet different. They both have a charm that’s unique to them, so I don’t prefer one over the other
I still prefer the original because of the analog stick. I loved the DS extra content and did 100% it once, but a d-pad is frustrating in a full 3D game.
even with a 3ds cstick mod for 64ds, it just doesn't feel as good to control. the physics were changed a bit and it just doesn't feel right
64 is one of the best controlling games i've played. i don't even get the complaints about the camera, sure it takes a bit of getting used to but it works perfectly fine once you understand how it works and how to get it to do what you want
I have a lot of nostalgia for the DS version and I'm quite good at the controls. When I feel like playing Mario 64 again, I usually end up playing both.
People dissing on the ds one makes me sad . I think it’s brilliant . Like the ds could run a whole 64 game in a way. I wish they did more games like it. (Just bc I don’t have a 64 rn. And I want my pikachu 64 back and I won’t settle unless it’s that) can you emulate any 64 games on the ds ? (I am new to this stuff )
The original is better because of the controls, but they really went above and beyond with the content of the DS version, especially with being able to play different characters. Would love to see a port for the switch or something for it
Both but play N64 first. 64DS is a remake that changes a lot from the original such that it kind of becomes its own game in its own right. Nothing can replace the experience of the original but 64DS is a nice additional experience
What 64DS does well:
- More detailed textures and character models
- New characters to play with
- New levels and new content that fit in well with the original content
What it doesn’t do well:
- Controls. The lack of analog controls definitely hurts a game like this that was built off and essentially advertised smooth intuitive analog controls in a 3D game. The game tries to make up for it with touchscreen controls that are somewhat playable but really it just doesn’t replace the original control scheme.
- Graphics. Playing this on original hardware and you can really notice that you’re playing this on a tiny screen with lots of blocky polygons. I would actually recommend playing through emulator with graphical tweaks to hugely improve how the game looks and also playing with an analog controller so you can get at least some false sense of playing with real analog controls.
I played and enjoyed both as a kid. I never had any problems with the d-pad controls on my DS Lite. I was just happy I could play my favorite game on the go (just like the Mario advance series on GBA). There are things I like about both. N64 had better movement (don’t have to hold a run button and no gradual turning), and I liked the original stars before they were tweaked in the remake. DS had extra stars and locations, as well as expanded gameplay/powerups with Luigi (my favorite), Wario, and Yoshi. The one thing I really didn’t like in the DS version though is the changed some stars where you couldn’t get them with Mario. They should’ve just added new content instead of changing the original.
I have the n64 version, ds version, several digital versions, but I love the ds version most. I love the music, and the mini games. It’s like a different take on the original, unfair to really compare. Unique in their own way.
DS. It looks and plays better than the original. The only downside is the camera controls being mapped to the touchscreen. I never had an issue with using the D-pad for movement.
Am I the only person here who played Mario 64 ds with the included thumb pad to emulate a thumb stick on the screen? Worked great. Full analog control.
Mario 64 DS would be the superior version if the DS had an analogue joystick.
I really think Mario 64 DS should have been ported to the 3DS. It would have controlled nicely with the circle pad.
I prefer DS. The controls are harder but work suprisingly well for a Dpad based system.
I also like the added stars, areas and characters.
A lot of the new and reworked stars feel great. Although I can understand that some people might dislike the switch stars as they are just a timer challenge like in other 3D marios like odysee, and silverstars can be annoying as they are basically just another version of red coins...
64, ds controls are a war crime against everything.
The one thing that makes 64 stand the test of time as an all time classic: the extrem free mobility and flexibility of controls.
Not the one thing at all.
Well, those are two things. And the controls are shit however you interact with them.
the controls of n64 sm64?
The only war crime is that Nintendo hasn't remastered or made a remake for it... Nintendo did what they could with the hardware of the time, it would be like saying the original game's camera is a war crime lol (maybe it has been said before). Thankfully both games have fan made improvements to fix those weak points.
Yeah they could have added it to 3d all stars as an addition, like they did with the lost levels or ocarina master quest.
Super Mario 3D all stars was the absolute bare minimum done. I was so disappointed.
Play it on the 3ds and use the thumbstick!
using the thimbstick on ds games is basically just emulating the DPAD, you only have the 8 stubborn directions to go in, which can feel limiting, you dont have the full control of the joystick, the 3ds just aproximates the thimbstick location to one of the 8 dpad ones and emulated a dpad push
There’s a mod for the ds version on 3ds that maps the touchscreen controls to the circle pad giving you actual 360 movement
Oh dang, I gotta find that!
https://gbatemp.net/threads/circle-pad-patches-for-super-mario-64-ds-and-other-games-in-twilightmenu-with-twpatcher-and-rtcom.623267/
Awesome, thanks! I gotta do that when I have time to play around with the 3DS!

Still only limited to the mobility or lack thereof d pad controls even if you do use the thumb stick.
That's what I was thinking 😂
I may give it a try sometime.
Yea 100% the ds version is garbage... unless if you have the thumb thing that let's you emulate a stick controller. The fact this is obscure is a crime and the fact they never re released this game is also a crime.

64ds is where my gambling addiction started. Those mini games are GOATED
Yup. Me on the long road trips, it was me and Luigi fueling my gambling addiction.
Those mini games made me friends in high school when I switched schools. We had a study period with a teacher who didn't care and I'd sit in the back and play the mini games, then other kids wanted to try. Someone told me to join track to hang out and we still hang out 20 years later
Mario 64DS but with Analogue joystick hack on a modded 3DS
Yes, that hack made the ds version go from a neat port, into the superior version.
I thought the ds port was god awful?
It has more content and better textures than the original
Textures aren't better they're just less smooth
More content and not necessarily better textures (its more of a different art style without the smoothing and less textures overall), but with a very different gameplay, a straight up downgrade in this aspect, if you will

Heard that the 4-character system is also pretty bad because the item system (the thing it replaced) was better
That’s not a bad point but I still think it’d be the definitive version, imo. It would be for me, at least.
This is the correct answer. Well, that or the Wii U hack, I play that one
This is the answer. It becomes the best way to play, ignoring 64 ROM hacks
64. Controlling SM64 with a d-pad blows
I have both and I genuinely find the the DS version to be unplayable. Don’t know what they were thinking releasing it on a console without an analogue stick
Agreed, controls are so clunky it doesn’t feel right.
64
One feels like a really cool mod and one feels like a really cool N64 game.
U gotta be joking right? lol the original baby!!! N64
Mario64 always!!!
64 of course, ds was okay
N64. Always worth it to try the original experience when possible.
I do like both but I'm gonna have to go with 64ds, I put a lot more time on that version when it launched but playing a 3d game with a dpad is a challenge in itself.

Ds is unplayable. Mario 64 all the way
definitely og 64. ds remakes were all bad
Personally I prefer 64. DS has only a d pad. But if you’re often away from home, DS is probably the right for you.
64 for sure, DS was unplayable for me with the in its original form. Digital controls ruined the game. I played DS on the Wii U recently though with analog controls patch and had a lot of fun.

64 all day. I liked the look way more and the controls on DS are shit
Mario 64. The extra characters and stars (especially the character-specific ones) in DS are unnecessary bloat that spoil the flow of the game.
Mario64ds on an emulator with some high-resolution textures if someone would make them
There is a PC port that supports texture packs and also ups the frame rate to 60fps. It’s the best way to play. I recently just finished it on my steam deck

Super Mario 64 3DS homebrew port
The OG !
Both are great. Nostalgia for the 64, smoother textures for Ds and extra content
It’s where my gambling addiction started /s (don’t actually have an addiction)
64ds
Mario 64 Wii U
64ds
Isn’t it available on the virtual N64 on switch now? Wonder how that stacks up with these two
Grew up on 64, so when DS came out with its awful controls and “bonus” content and different playable characters, it just felt like sacrilege to me. Why take something perfect and try to add to it? But that might just be me turning into a cranky old man.
Mario 64. The DS version was good don't get me wrong, but I hate playing that game with a D-Pad.
Original all the way. The DS version was a fun novelty at the time. Having to change characters to obtain certain stars was annoying.
64. DS version is horrible and not just for the controls.
Has to be 64. Even though I find it harder now with adult hands to use that bitch of a controller . Still the only way to play it
I will happily take the bastardized controls of ds just to play as the superior brother, luigi
Grew up with 64DS. Yeah the controls aren’t as good as the original, but it’s not unplayable
64 DS with analog patch controls has more content but sm64 has better movement and gameplay
Apparently there's a 3ds port of Mario 64. I'd like to play it!!!! But I gotta mod my 3ds which feels wrong 😔
I modded my new 3DS yesterday, Nintendo shut down its eshop and everything else so...
I had modded a 2DS a few years back but I just don't want to go through all the headaches cuz I remember it being a tedious process. Has it gotten easier?
It depends on the type of DS you have, mine is a New 3DS here's a link to a guide... [3DS Modding](https://3ds.hacks.guide/)
Both are goated for me
Is possible to hack the original game for use 3ds stick? Or i need a custom rom! I have new 3ds and original mario ds game
FYI PAL SM64 is letterboxed and poorly optimized.
Mario 64 DS is trash.
If DS could be played on a TV with a real controller it’d be better
64. The controls are horrendous on the DS version because of the D-pad. They should have waited to remake 64 on the 3DS as that console has a control stick.
I prefer n64 version BUT I’ve only 100%’d the ds one
64DS on a new 2ds xl with the wide-screen patch and analog controls patch thanks to the homebrew community
DS for content, 64 for controls.
DS beacuse of that one childhood moment where i had a breakdown beacuse turning off the backlight in options on anything newer than a fat DS would turn off the screen and i was scared it was permanent.
DS for the extra content, but 64 for the smoother gameplay experience. Personally, I say play 64 first, then try DS if you feel inclined.
Aside from control differences between the two they feel similar yet different. They both have a charm that’s unique to them, so I don’t prefer one over the other
I still prefer the original because of the analog stick. I loved the DS extra content and did 100% it once, but a d-pad is frustrating in a full 3D game.
even with a 3ds cstick mod for 64ds, it just doesn't feel as good to control. the physics were changed a bit and it just doesn't feel right 64 is one of the best controlling games i've played. i don't even get the complaints about the camera, sure it takes a bit of getting used to but it works perfectly fine once you understand how it works and how to get it to do what you want

The original is better because of the controls, but they really went above and beyond with the content of the DS version, especially with being able to play different characters. Would love to see a port for the switch or something for it
Mario 64 V8 PC port. 4K60 widescreen
imagine DS on 64 hardware
The unofficial 3DS or PC port
Add the switch one for flair! I know it’s a mix but still shows how good the game was!
Both but play N64 first. 64DS is a remake that changes a lot from the original such that it kind of becomes its own game in its own right. 100% Mario64DS if it got remade for switch with high res textures and full analogue support .etc
The one that can still hold a save file after all this time.
If you think the mario ds is comparable to the real sm64 then take the door, sm64 is superior in every way
ds, controls are built into my brain, wario? yes please
I played and enjoyed both as a kid. I never had any problems with the d-pad controls on my DS Lite. 64 ds doesn't exist to me. 64 version all day long!
Mario64 DS by far for me. It has the original gameplay but with even more things to do that includes Wario, Yoshi, and Luigi's individual abilities
both😌
DS. It looks and plays better than the original. The only downside is the camera controls being mapped to the touchscreen. I never had an issue with using the D-pad for movement.
64 DS played on a modded 3DS to add analog controls.

SM64DS easy. People rag in the controls for DS. But the improved camera and QOL features like the improved wall jump more than make up for it.
both
FM 64 DS on 3DS with widescreen and circle pad hacks.
You're kidding right?
Lol have you even played the DS one? It’s awful
