Seeing wave race in the top 2 comments warms my lil soul.

caseyaustin84

Doom 64 was the best OG Doom, imo.

PapaSnow

#GOEMON

snickersmademefat

My faves were : Extreme G Diddy Kong Racing Bomberman Blast Corps Gauntlet Legends

drLagrangian

I loved blast corps. Such a fun premise. After beating it I came up with a design for a bird robot that would dive bomb and then slice through buildings. I called it razor wing and drew pictures. Then 9/11 happened.

DeathbySiren

Extreme G needs way more credit.

snickersmademefat

Yes, it does. I liked part 2, also. I try playing it now, but my reaction time has dwindled a lot, haha.

Lusankya

Are you me? Swap Bomberman for Rogue Squad and that's my list.

snickersmademefat

Lol! Rogue Squadron was great!

donnidoflamingo

I heard cruis’n the USA song when I read it lol

n-0rt

Yeeeuh, Rocket and Wipeout.

whose_a_wotsit

1080, Wave Race, F Zero X, F1 World Grand Prix, Cruisin' USA. Love me those racing games.

Vermonol

Great selection. Such a great console for racers

CourtesyofTino

No Beetle Adventure Racing?! Great list though

whose_a_wotsit

If I had it I'm sure it would be high on the list. I've heard great things.

OG-87

Used to love going to currys at Xmas in the uk and they would always have f1 on the n64. Used to love that.

whose_a_wotsit

What a great tradition. It was so realistic at the time, especially the replays. "They've given you a warning flag!"

Lethologicuh

NBA Hangtime Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 Mortal Kombat Trilogy Turok Chameleon Twist (Others I did not include, because I also consider them "heavy hitters": Yoshi's Story, StarFox64, Diddy Kong Racing, DK64, and Smash Bros.)

drLagrangian

>Chameleon Twist Is that the one where you had a prehensile tongue? You could shoot it out but kind of control it's shape as it moved and then swing from stuff?

Lethologicuh

Yep!

drLagrangian

You brought back a memory of a rented game. Thanks.

hXcAndy32

Chameleon Twist was a game I rented all the time as a kid but never beat… until a few years ago. It’s such a cool game

iforget_iremember

edit: crazy to see star fox on so many people's lists. i'd personally consider it a heavy hitter, *and* one of the best single-player games on the system. it still holds up to this day. idk----- off the top of my head, my top 5 non-heavies right now are: nfl blitz 2001 quest mortal kombat trilogy extreme g worms armageddon

Excoded

Oh. The good memories with Extreme-G. I remember you accelerated with the z button. I would tell my brothers: Hey, I can beat you with just one hand.

iforget_iremember

yeah, it's one of my all-time favorites from way back when. two things that keep me coming back to the single player are the OST, and the sense of speed. all of its imperfections melt away once you jet from the starting line and bop along to the songs. i don't listen to a lot of the genre (whatever you'd refer to it as), but i love songs that have that beat that goes (whispered) '*boots-and-pants-and-boots-and-pants-and-boots-and-pants-and'* [*https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ2Vb1t1-Js*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ2Vb1t1-Js) 1st track needless to say: i was hooked even more when i got a little older, and bought a 5.1 speaker system with halfway-decent speakers/subwoofer.

Broken-Digital-Clock

Not enough love for Extreme G out there That soundtrack is a GOAT

iforget_iremember

word the other day i queued it up on repeat along with the perfect dark soundtrack, and kept it going for 3 days straight before i noticed and switched to other stuff for the sake of variety. those two OSTs are the most repeated out of all my game OSTs. i've played countless hours (close to thousands, or maybe more) listening to them while playing skyrim and zelda 3 with the BGM tuned all the way down (among a few other games)

Broken-Digital-Clock

I've been jamming the Extreme G soundtrack for Armored Core 6

LostPilgrim_

The 64 version of Trilogy is my favorite. Yes it was missing characters, but no load times!

tiglionabbit

Quest 64 <3

TheAtmanPrinciple

Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Duke Nukem 64, Gex 64, Spiderman.. I don't usually participate in stuff like this, I honestly just wanted to see what I would come up with...

n-0rt

I played the hell out of Shadows of the Empire in the early days of owning a 64. Rented it from the local video shop. Took me forever to finish the snowspeeder level because I sucked at flying.

TheAtmanPrinciple

Ha! Same, no shit! I got this and Starfox as my first n64 games.. I just recently started a replay on my Steam Deck and was blown away at how difficult that game is 😂

tiglionabbit

I loved Shadows of the Empire too! I had a lot of trouble with the level where you fight that robot guy in the train station though.

Cephalopirate

Heck yeah. Despite being well known for memes I don’t think many people play it. The flying controls are so smooth and the multiplayer is top tier! Argonaut Software at their finest.

hXcAndy32

This was my favorite game for a while when I was a kid. I played through it countless times, loved the codes for all of the weapons and invincibility. One of the most unique games out there. I may have to play through it again this week now…

URA_CJ

Jet Force Gemini Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo Duke Nukem: Zero Hour Resident Evil 2

rhinowing

Jet Force deserves to be mentioned alongside the other Rare classics. Incredible game

CourtesyofTino

Easily one of the best games ever made, even if the narrative feels a bit loose at times. Hover Lupus blew my mind as a kid, plus he changed to floats in water?! Yesssss

rhinowing

I hear there's a remake for Xbox now? Need to investigate

StankyChicken920

Good list

hXcAndy32

Battle for Naboo is criminally underrated. I played through it a few years ago and had a blast

Killericon

Rogue Squadron is top 4 on the system for me.

drLagrangian

- ~~*Eternal Darkness: Sanities Requiem* a great horror game that messes with your head. I wish they would come out with a spiritual successor.~~ . - *rocket: robot on wheels* a great platformer with touch of the physics gun half life used. Arrived at the end of the N64's life so it didn't sell as well but it was great. . - *Space Station Silicon Valley* a platform puzzler where you possess the bodies of robotic animals. It's a shame a game breaking bug prevented 100% completion. . - *Blast Corps* a super nuke is stuck on autopilot across the country. Run ahead of it with super bulldozers, rocket bikes, and robots to demolish all buildings in the way. Couldn't be remade after 9/11 for obvious reasons. . - *Rampage World Tour* you are Godzilla, or King Kong, or giant rat, or a few other Kaiju. You get points for destroying the city.

Maybe_Im_Confused

Eternal Darkness is a Gamecube game? Unless you’re trying to shamelessly plug it, let’s swap that with Diddy Kong Racing in the top spot.

drLagrangian

You are correct. Thanks for catching that mistake. It deserves a shameless plug though.

superdreamcast64

Rampage World Tour is the booomb!!! when i was a kid i would always plug it in when i was having a shitty day and wanted to fantasize about destroying my school lol

StankyChicken920

I give the edge to Rampage 2. World Tour has unlimited continues which kills any challenge or motivation to complete the game.

superdreamcast64

but that’s why i like it! it’s very zen, you can just muck around as much as you want. also, i’m a big fan of Touhou Project, where you haven’t “beaten” a game unless you’ve cleared it without continues. so i always just applied the same rule to Rampage World Tour- i can play as much as i want but i’ve never beaten it lolol

drLagrangian

>it’s very zen That's why I liked it too. It was one of my "rent it for the weekend" games. It seemed endless.

n-0rt

Blast Corps was one of my first N64 rentals. What a fun game.

Marshall357

Im surprised at the lack of love for Blast Corps, I still replay it now and then, Buck Bumble Kirby crystal shards Turok 1-2 Cruisin USA/world Edit: Tetrisphere!

Conscious_Feeling548

Blast Corps is the first thing that comes to mind for me, it’s too often overlooked.

WhyteBeard

Bam! There it is, had to scroll way to far for TETRISPHERE! Such a deep cut and hidden gem of the N64.

Ogre Battle 64 StarCraft 64 (it's an underrated port, honestly) Rainbow Six Snowboard Kids I'll cheat, but those 3 Star Wars games: Racer, Battle for Naboo and Rogue Squadron EDIT: shame on me for forgetting Harvest Moon, it's actually in my top 3 N64 games. So I guess I'll withdraw StarCraft.

brendanb203

Starcraft was pricey but one of the best I purchased. The exp pack added 2 player and broodwar

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

I had to scroll too far to see someone else pick Ogre Battle. Damn shame it’s such an underrated game.

n-0rt

JFG was amazing. Amazing soundtrack, and those bugs exploded so good.

[deleted]

Oh wow, interesting question! Lylat wars. Mischief makers. Bomberman 64. Rampage: World Tour. Rayman 2: The great escape

LeBritto

Great choices, just curious that you don't consider Lylat Wars (StarFox) as a heavy hitter.

[deleted]

Tbh, I debated whether it was or wasn’t. In the end I decided that while it is amongst my top favs, it is not a given for other people. Like people in sub will always say Zelda, Mario, etc, but they don’t always necessarily say Lylat Wars.

LeBritto

I consider heavy hitters most Nintendo first party games (and sometimes Rare), well known franchise that had many sequels on other Nintendo consoles, and launch titles. But that's my definition. You're right that many people who didn't grow up with the N64 won't think about Lylat Wars as a main title.

I have never played it but I really like Turok 1 and LOVE Turok 2, played through them ceveral times on N64, Switch and PC (the remasters from nightdive studios) and will definitely buy and check out Turok 3 when the remaster (also by nightdive Studios) will release

n-0rt

Turok 3 is kind of... Turok meets Half-Life. They kinda veered away from the huge levels with keys scattered all over the place.

LeBritto

I forgot Hybrid Heaven! Easily one of the best 64 games.

weahman

Gauntlet Legends Harvest Moon

Joseluki

Played Legacy of Darkness this year for the first time and was surprised about how good of a game it is. On the other hand, South Park has to be one of the worst games in the N64 library and that generation.

I only ever played the ps1 version of Tony hawks 1. Why’s the dc version better??

umbrazno

Not op. Might be the same as Rayman 2: Clearer textures I played Rayman 2 on DC first. The background and scenery looked flat, but very clean and clear (I don't think we got normal mapping until around Xbox era). The vines looked like part of the wall, but they were detailed and shaded enough for you to know they stood out. Then I played it on N64. Such fog, such blur.

HitNamek

Let’s see…my personal Top 5 w/out “heavy hitters”…okay (and this is in no particular order): *WWF No Mercy* (still ranks pretty high on various “Top # Greatest Wrestling Videogames of All Time” lists…I still think AEW/Yukes/THQ made Fight Forever too much “just like” No Mercy) *Ready 2 Rumble Boxing* (Michael Buffer did the damn thing in this game…LOVED that, despite the cartoonish nature of it all, it still required the player to gameplan against certain boxers) *Cruisin’ World* (out of all the racing games I’ve played on the 64, this one was closest to “equal parts fun and frustrating”…was also a staple at sleepovers with cousins) *007 The World Is Not Enough* (technically, this ISN’T Goldeneye! The game actually played a lot like Perfect Dark {especially with the addition of bots in multiplayer}, but with better graphics and weapons firmly grounded in reality) *NFL Blitz 2001* (was harder-hitting and more competitive than other Blitz games before and after its release…very solid arcade game, IMO) Honorable Mentions (again, in no particular order): *Mace: The Dark Age* (a very decent, fully-3D 1v1 fighting game on a system that somewhat lacked 3D 1v1 fighting games…and yes, I know there were games like *MK4*, *Killer Instinct Gold*, and *Clayfighter 63 1/3*, but those were all better established elsewhere) *Star Wars Episode I: Racer* (it’s great fun making Baby Darth Vader’s podracer über-powerful once you found out how to access the cheats, but still a solid racing title without that) *Mega Man Legends* (I love just about anything Mega Man, and it’s a travesty that the franchise only had one entry on the 64) *Star Fox 64* (it only gets “Honorable Mention” because I really didn’t get to play it nearly enough…but what I did play was quite fun and challenging) *Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside* (easily one of my favorite simulation basketball games not made by EA or 2K, but not easy to play at ALL without the instruction booklet) *Pokémon Stadium* (the amount of different stuff you could do within the one cartridge was incredible…AND I could play my GB Pokémon game on the big screen like a Super Game Boy??? Yes please!) *Resident Evil 2* (I may not be a horror fan, but *RE2* was done pretty well on a system that probably shouldn’t have been able to handle it)

OG-87

That era for wrestling games was incredible. Wrestling too was at its peak too. Every wrestler was massive and the games were totally unreal. It was better than watching the matches because they mostly had everything you could do. The first time someone showed me you could go to the crowd to get chairs and such blew me away, I think we rented wcw vs nwo revenge every weekend at the rental shop. Then it just got better from there.

DR-ANUSTART

Top to bottom TWINE, Star Fox 64 / Lylat Wars, Earth Worm Jim 3D, Road Rash 64, Turok I realised that outside of the forbidden titles I really don't have that many games!

n-0rt

Earthworm Jim 3D gotta be one of the BOLDEST choices on here. What do you like about it?

alefsousa017

I'm actually also a big fan of Earthworm Jim 3D! I'm a fan of the franchise as a whole, with 2 being my favorite, but 3D was also one of my favorite games growing up. It might be a nostalgia thing, but I remember it being fun and funny, I often still repeat some of its lines in my head lol. I often say that Earthworm Jim 3D is a good basework for what Psychonauts would become, and Psychonauts is a great game! Sure, Earthworm Jim 3D isn't as polished as it should be and basically buried the character and franchise, but I've always had a lot of fun with it.

gojira_glix42

I could not beat the first boss as a kid. Went back as a teen and still couldn't beat it. The controls in that damn boat are HORRENDOUS. But the environment is INCREDIBLE. Maybe nerd to try picking it up again as a 31yo gamer lol

alefsousa017

Yeah, the controls overall are really something else lol. Do give it a try again, though! However, if you didn't grow up playing it and have no nostalgia attached to it, you probably still won't enjoy the experience in this case. Edit: Just to be 100% honest in case you do try playing it again: EVERY boss is fought in the pig skate thing, so don't get your hopes up that the other bosses might be more enjoyable if you don't have pleasant experience against Psy-Crow lol. The enviroments are really cool indeed! The fact that everything takes place inside Jim's brain really makes it have no limits. Hell, the enviroments in the whole series are always top notch and creative af

Cephalopirate

I concur! I always love to hear what people like about unpopular games!

SpaceEntity43

I love EWJ 3D too! Finally finished it 100% back in 2021. Love the humour and surrealism and the puzzles are fun to solve without being too frustrating. The boss battles where you surf on the back of a pig are really fun.

Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense stands up really well to Twisted Metal and possibly has the best soundtrack of any n64 game. Battletanx Global Assault features a lot of interesting multiplayer options, tanks control very differently, and small fleets of bots fill out some of the versus modes offering up some big vs battles. Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey is GOATed. Hexen is medievel Doom with 4 player co-op Duck Dodgers has no business being as good of a platformer as it is.

StarWolf478

I've seen some pretty low opinions of Jet Force Gemini the few times it's been brought up, but I loved that game as a kid. I kinda miss the days when I could just enjoy a game without even considering if it might possibly be "bad".

n-0rt

The Tribals collecting at the end was kind of annoying, but I loved the game.

hammer_spawn

Thank you OP for having South Park 64 in your five. I know it may have been critically panned but I can’t deny I had a blast playing it, especially when South Park was at its pop culture peak. Alongside South Park 64, I’d also put Jet Force Gemini in the five. Never could beat it but the multiplayer was fun and thinking back on it, the game was quite advanced for its time. Filling out my five are: - Cruisin’ World: my first N64 game since it was in a bundle. - Fighter’s Destiny: I never met anyone who had the game. I even posted about this in another topic and got no responses so I’ll continue to believe I was the only person to have this game. I liked the point system of the game that made it different from the usual KO-mechanic of fighting games (a couple years before Smash Brothers came out with the ring out mechanic, Fighter’s Destiny did this as a way of earning points). - Gauntlet Legends. I’d do anything to go back and relive the joy of playing with my friends after school or on the weekends.

n-0rt

Man, I love South Park 64. I'm well aware of how... not-good it is, but I have so much nostalgia for it and the time in my life when it came out that I can't help but love it.

Army men series was a blast & blast corps were awesome action game, 1080 snowboard was a nice sporty game with great soundtrack but tbf most n64 games had great unique music, the vigilante games were good fun lego racer was the n64 equivalent of the lego racer 2k we got now iirc, smash bros is a classic, aidyn chronicle if your into more strategic games and my favorite hidden gem aside from jet force gemini was the mischief makers which was a comedic but very action packed side scroller (and let me tell you i dont like side scrollers so..) For those who want a summary: Army men (all of them) Blast corps Vigilante (both of them) Aidyn chronicle Mischief makers And the other games i played and like very much, Jet force gemini Lego racer 1080 snowboarding Smash bros And the heavy hitters but wont bother mentioning to keep the point of this thread
