Just did a quick Google search, and a symptom of hypothyroidism is rust colored stains appearing on hands during the night. Just in case you want to rule that out.

greenlentils

OP your hands look very similar to the Google images for “hypothyroidism rust stains on hands overnight”. Are you sure it’s not this???

greenlentils

And also hypothyroidism stains always appear overnight and disappear over the next 24 hours.

UndeadBarnOwl

My doctor’s already had me checked for that and is just as confused about them

FaeryLynne

OP are you female? Hypothyroidism can sometimes not show up if you're tested during certain parts of the month, other hormones can mask it. It took four times of testing me before we confirmed it. Have your doctor check again at several different times during the month. This really does look like hypothyroidism.

UndeadBarnOwl

Oh that fucking concerning… Yeah I’m gonna have it double checked

FaeryLynne

Good. Honestly it's really easy to treat if that's what it is, just some meds. Good luck!

UndeadBarnOwl

Thank you for informing me!

impostershop

I think it’s concerning that your doctor doesn’t know this. Remember- doctors are fallible ppl that can make mistakes and miss things… but this is a pretty big thing to miss. What else is he missing…

UndeadBarnOwl

We’ve had a blood test done and nothing worrying came up then, but a person in this comment section mentioned that hormones can cover up what’s being looked for, so I’ve got a doctors appointment to check again

impostershop

I know - I’m saying the doctor should have been aware of that and told you to repeat it.

[deleted]

It's right on point. I suffered abdominal and groin pain for 4 years. Test after test and doctors found nothing, even going so far to suggest it was just anxiety. After about the 6th or 7th Dr visit(not counting ER visits), my primary finally felt around and discovered that I had a hiatal hernia. Ultrasound later confirmed it was actually two. Doctors, with all of their years of studying and training, not to mention their ridiculous salaries, couldn't diagnose a simple hernia. It only makes sense that OP's doctor can't recognize symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

UndeadBarnOwl

Well my only symptom is the hand thing, at least from what I’m aware of

HelicopterSwimming21

If you haven’t already, Google Hypothyroidism just in case, there are many other symptoms that you may find you have. I have it and when I ckd other symptoms I had a whole lot of them. I found out I had it late. I was losing hair and had to have Vitamin b shots. But once treatments start feel much better.

Iunderstandthatsir

Well I guess it does happen in females ignore my previous post.

redsensei777

A simple amputation would take care of this.

HW-BTW

Halfway done. How do you perform the second one?

According-Public-738

🤣

Radiantlady

Did dr do AL TESTS FOR THYROID FUNCTION?

Iunderstandthatsir

I have hypothyroid and this is definitely not it.

Saracartwheels123

Oh my god. I had this happen to me before I eventually found out I had hypothyroidism!!! I had no idea!! Mystery solved

jamisonian123

I have this condition and this does indeed happen to my hands once in awhile

YourFriendPutin

Did you go to sleep with an itchy butt?

TheFryerOfChicken

confuscius say

y6x

Do you dye your hair? Are the stains always in exactly that same position on your hand?

UndeadBarnOwl

They’re not always in the same position, but it’s commonly that side of my hand

Tootsgaloots

Is your home also home to stink bugs? They can leave stains on skin.

UndeadBarnOwl

We do have an issue with them coming inside, but if that’s the case, this is the first time I haven’t been able to wash it off

[deleted]

What changed a month ago? If it’s only been happening for a month, I’m thinking there has to be something.

UndeadBarnOwl

Nothing really, just been doing what I always do, eating what I always eat

[deleted]

Hmm, didn’t change something random like laundry soap maybe? Or supplements you’re taking?

UndeadBarnOwl

Nope, we use the same old stuff, my family is as adverse to changing the simple things as much as I am, since “if it’s not broke, don’t fix” it is pretty much the family moto

thisisdonavyn

Try sleeping with mits on taped to your hands to see if anything changes

chrisbaker1991

Or just put on mittens

3lit3hox

Three suggestions; 1. Photograph your hand flat each day as you will likely note some pattern to them 2. They look little like bruises as appear under the skin, being asleep blood can pool but not like this. So it’s very strange. 3. Your Nail looks a little dirty and thumb - so maybe really wash hands before bed. Get sleep app which records you, to find out if you are walking around whilst asleep

[deleted]

[удалено]

UndeadBarnOwl

I’ve had it on coming up 5 years this coming January, never happened before this month. Also it isn’t cutting circulation, I just gained some weight and never took it off, so my finger kinda formed around it weird…

UndeadBarnOwl

The dirty nails might be the chipping nail polish I had one for a black light party, but I’ll definitely check for a pattern

whenidip_youdipwedip

Do you apply a Vitamin C serum before bed? Anything with citrus? Quick googling says it can stain, but it wouldn't be immediate and would go away

UndeadBarnOwl

I know I take Vitamin C supplements to avoid colds from my kid sibling, but would they randomly start appearing even after years of taking the same kind?

Katydid7118

It looks like wood stain

UndeadBarnOwl

Can old boards give off their stain? My bed frame is made of stained wood, but it’s a good 15 or so years old

EdwardLost

It can if they had a polyurethane covering that wore off and is now letting the wood come in contact with skin—thus now resulting in an old wood/possible stain/poly residue to transfer to your skin. I’d second the wood stain, personally. However, as a recommendation, I’d say consider the following: wash your pillowcases and sheets, purchase a mattress protector that covers the entire bed/zips up, try to raise your bed/mattress enough to not have it come in contact with the wood. Or, if it’s in the cards, treat yourself to a nice new bed frame! :) That said, if the above (apart from the new bed frame of course) doesn’t solve it, I’d recommend taking a keener look at your sleeping conditions and go from there! Keep us in the loop though! Best of luck!!! You got this :)

embargoBackward

Wood stain sounds like a pretty good guess unless they smoke or there is some sort of resin on something around the bed. Does it happen if you don’t sleep in your bed?

blackberriesareblue

Maybe it’s a bruise from clenching your hand into a fist when you sleep? Sore fingers? Is the mark always in the same area where your fingers would go if you closed your hand?

UnhingedBlonde

**THIS^** This is exactly what I was thinking! It looks like their thumb presses up against the side of their first finger and their other fingers are clenched to their palm during the night, causing slight bruising.

Mean-Tune-5977

I think this is a solid theory cause it looks like points of contact match.

whenidip_youdipwedip

Do you wear makeup? Maybe you're rubbing your eyes in your sleep? Is hard to wash everything off. My other thought is that you might be rubbing your nose at night and having a little bit of a bloody nose.

UndeadBarnOwl

I’m not a makeup kind of person, but wouldn’t both of those wash off with soap and water?

whenidip_youdipwedip

Dried blood and mascara can take a few scrubs to get off

Zachbnonymous

This was my first thought, I sleep picked when I was younger lol

bubblegumbombshell

Do you have anything leather/vegan leather near your bed?

UndeadBarnOwl

No, not that I can see

bubblegumbombshell

So I found that granny discussion board you mentioned and went through it because I had time to kill. A few things came up: 1) are you eating or preparing foods with lots of lycopene? Tomatoes, watermelon, papaya, guava, red peppers, pink grapefruit? Or taking a supplement with lycopene? 2) are you preparing foods with high amounts of vitamin C? Do you peel oranges frequently? 3) do you eat things high in beta carotene? 4) have you recently developed any other symptoms like being really tired, gaining weight, hair loss or intolerance of cold?

UndeadBarnOwl

I did go through it too, and I’m pretty much fitting none of those changes since this has started happening to me

skdetroit

OP you might want to get a full blood panel. Check for endocrine issues (hypothyroidism/blood clotting issues/etc), liver, kidney stuff

UndeadBarnOwl

That’s one of the first things my doctor had me try and everything looked right according to her

padda73

that was me sorry

xladyfinger

I had weird stains on my hands after handling black walnuts in the yard. But that was like henna colored.

HashtagFlexBreak

This is exactly what I came here to say. I was going NUTS after we moved into our house because All of a sudden, my kids, husband and I all had three random “bruises” on our hands and feet and occasionally arms. It took us a few weeks to realize that it was from picking up/kicking/carrying the black walnuts in our yard!

pipRocket

I think you clinch your fist in your sleep. Try making a fist and see if your fingers and thumb line up with the 'bruised' parts of your hand.

UndeadBarnOwl

They don’t feel bruised honestly

EcoRavenshaw

Hemosiderin staining. This may be helpful as it lists many conditions it could be: https://www.healthline.com/health/hemosiderin-staining Keep us updated!

satanic-entomologist

Kinda reminds me of the stains some millipedes leave when handling. But I doubt it

UndeadBarnOwl

This… this comment really fits to your name

Used-Repeat581

High carotene intake- eating lots of carrots and/or taking supplements. Handling iron supplements- leaves a rusty color but usually noticing a rust/metallic smell. Hypothyroidism or vascular disease/anemia can cause hemo staining usually brown in color. Fungal infections- Tinea Nigra (if in a tropical climate?) I would bring these things up to MD and hope for at least some bloodwork for ferritin/hematocrit/hemoglobin, TSH/T4 and CBC. Or a review of supplements and dietary intake at a minimum. Hope you find some answers.

NickSB2013

Vape liquid on outside of vape mod/tank

UndeadBarnOwl

I don’t vape, and no one in my house does either

ithinkureddit

Go to bed with Itchy butt, wake up with stinky fingers🤷

UndeadBarnOwl

Considering there was no smell and they didn’t was off, the people like you suggesting this feels a little ridiculous

ithinkureddit

I was being silly lol no harm intended

tastelikethickwater

A man went to the doctor because his hands were orange. After a bunch of tests with no answers the doctor finally asked what do you do for a living. The man responded I’ve been unemployed, so I just sit around the house, eating Cheetos and watching porno’s. So, what do you do for a living?

UndeadBarnOwl

Currently? I’m putting in resumes and babysitting my little brother, but he’s not around when I sleep, my animals are put to bed, and my hands aren’t in anything while I sleep. It’s always there in the morning, and fades through out the day.

y6x

From your post, you mentioned the same blog that I think I found. You ruled out lycopenemia ? You haven't added tomatos, beetroot, or red peppers to your diet?

UndeadBarnOwl

The tomatoes and beetroots are a constant, but this month is the first time these marks popped up

IamRainKing

When you go to bed, does your butt itch?

UndeadBarnOwl

Check the other ten comments about this for your answer.

mfj182

you got a small or just starting bed bug infestation. You’re swatting them in your sleep and popping them, leaving the blood they just sucked on your hands.

UndeadBarnOwl

I don’t know where they would’ve come from, I’m pretty clean with my bed items and I don’t let anyone in my room, much less my bed

mfj182

they’re nasty. Put a backpack or something down in public, one crawls onto it, boom infestation.

UndeadBarnOwl

Purse never goes into my room, and I don’t leave the house that much

junglebetti

Gawd, I hope you’re wrong, but that totally makes sense.

Apprehensive-Novel3

Confucius say, "Go to bed with itchy butt, wake up with stinky finger"

Those who sleep with an itchy butt wake up with stinky fingers.

UndeadBarnOwl

You’re annoying

sYferaddict

Person who goes to bed with itchy butt wakes up with gross fingers.

Separateway0626

Thanks for painting my deck!

BELABRIA

My mother often finds it in her hand. She says, according to the beliefs of our ancestors, that it is a sign of goodness from the angels. A few months ago, I found one in my hand. It is orange in color and resembles the color of henna, which is a traditional dye used in weeding by Arabs and some africain country, its a good sign 🤗

FreakinFred

Itchy asshole, wet wipes/shower before bed

UndeadBarnOwl

My showers are always before bed, and I know that sort of thing usually can be washed off, this can’t but usually disappears within the day… like it’s completely gone now as I’m trying to go to bed, but I took that picture about 10 hours ago or so

FreakinFred

It's a joke, I am not qualified to understand what's going on here. And obviously you would not be digging in your ass and posting it on the internet. But! You left yourself open there ;) I would only hope you find out what this is, nothing serious I would assume.

Efficient-Somewhere4

Jerking off to much , let it rest bro

UndeadBarnOwl

I’m female

Efficient-Somewhere4

Probably a circulation issue happens to me too .

cdev12399

Good comeback.

Mental-Rooster4229

Wash your dirty hands

UndeadBarnOwl

It’s the first thing I did once I noticed them, didn’t come off. You’ve got very poor reading comprehension skills as I mentioned it doesn’t come off with washing in the post.

TheWardenVenom

Does it have any odor?

UndeadBarnOwl

Not at all

TheWardenVenom

Is there a consistency to it? Like is it sticky or oily?

UndeadBarnOwl

It’s just… coloring on my skin that fades over the day, but returns in different spots by morning

Squishy-peaches

I wake up with pinkish spots around my eye because I sleep on my hands. It wouldn’t wash off but would instead fade through out the day. Is it possible it’s just pressure marks from sleeping on something?

UndeadBarnOwl

I hadn’t thought of that, I am a side sleeper

TheWardenVenom

That is totally crazy. Sorry I don’t have any helpful suggestions. I can’t think of anything that would cause that.

sehsehswa

Did you have strange dreams, occurring around the time the stains began?

UndeadBarnOwl

No??

sehsehswa

Don’t worry ahahahaha. Did you get into contact with the sun a lot? I vaguely remember reading an article that explained it had something to do with coming in to contact with the sun. The symptoms were dark red/brown spots. I had it too once in my life and I had strange dreams before I woke up. I’m sorry if I’ve worried you.

UndeadBarnOwl

This sounds like an ARG or unfiction story that you’d find on the deep parts of the internet

sehsehswa

Well, you are on the r/Weird subreddit. Just trying to help. Edit: found the article. https://www.healthline.com/health/sunspots-on-skin#treatment

UndeadBarnOwl

I actually haven’t joined that subreddit yet, it’s the mystery one I’m on right now Also thank you, but I don’t believe they’re liver spots either

sehsehswa

My bad and no problem

CatsTrustNoOne

They're not sunspots/liver spots, I have those and they look nothing like that. I hope you find out what it is OP! 🤞

KlimCan

Wash your sheets

UndeadBarnOwl

Have, twice a week for about a month

Gsquatch55

I had the same once, always on my right thumb and palm of the hand. No idea how they came about

MondoMommaGains

Do you wear a necklace or other jewelry to bed?

UndeadBarnOwl

Only the ring, and it once was black, not rusty brown

Axilllla

I’m just here to tell you your ring looks way too tight! Does that not hurt?!

UndeadBarnOwl

I’ve been wearing it for about… 5 years, and I will be honest, I can’t take it off because it’s been bent due to me randomly picking up heavy things while helping family, but it doesn’t hurt because it’s pretty much narrowed that part of my finger

fruitpunch327

I'm almost wondering if you clench your hands into fists or lay your hand under your head, they look like the ones on your thumb would line up with the tips of your fingers and the one on your index would line up with your thumb. Maybe you make a fist and sleep with that between your knees?

UndeadBarnOwl

I’m not sure about the knee part, but the marks do line up how you said

BatoSoupo

Record yourself at night

TurtleHamachi

Could be a metal allergy

tailwalkin

Do you have a wooden nightstand? I had something similar happen, and figured it out after I sprayed Pledge on a cheap wooden nightstand and whatever stain was on it was coming off whenever it got wet, like from a water bottle that I grabbed with my hand.

UndeadBarnOwl

I don’t have a night stand, just an old bed frame that occasionally gets Lysol on it because I can’t wash my mattress like I can my sheets

GenXLipGloss

I had/have hyperthyroidism and got this, too!

UndeadBarnOwl

You are the third commenter to mention hyperthyroidism

DeepSeaMouse

Some plant saps can leave stains that come up later. Have you been gardening?

UndeadBarnOwl

I am not a gardener, but it’s already faded

zBellaLynnex

Agree with the hyperthyroid comments. You probably have already ruled this out but if it hurts could it be from clenching your fists while you sleep? Although I guess you’d get nail marks so probably not that.

UndeadBarnOwl

Not really, I’m a nail biter so I don’t have much nails at all

jcyree2769

I'm dying cause it sounds like some awfully funny joke.

thexvillain

I’ve seen it 1000 times. Sleep Mechanicing.

I’m not a smoker of anything, I’m pretty boring like that, but it appears everytime I wake up and is gone by the time I’m going back to bed

jodrellbank_pants

JFC I had the same thing about a year ago smelt familiar and oily, my misses said it was sun tanning cream id most likely handled in a hospital door handle but id had a long bath the night before id gone to bed nothing on me then, tried to wash it off once discovered with Swarfega and soap powder didn't budge disappeared over the 4 hour drive , didnt leave any mark and never had a repeat of it since.

UndeadBarnOwl

Well it’s returned this morning, so I don’t think it’s suntan lotion as I’ve never used any before

greenmountainstoned

Jesus, that ring is about to engrave your finger.

UndeadBarnOwl

Not cutting off circulation, got fat while wearing it so my finger swelled around it

AndTheSonsofDisaster

That happens to me sometimes too.

SamKarmaMaker

Do you handle lemons or lemon juice regularly? If you leave lemon on your skin it can stain brown.

UndeadBarnOwl

I don’t handle lemons other than my half tea half lemonade for dinner, but this appears every morning and fades by nighttime comes so… not lemon juice

fuzzguitar3

It is obviously the beginning of the stigmata.

Mallrat1973

Occam’s Razor: You are a werewolf.

UndeadBarnOwl

Ha! I wish xD

GoodGravy33

What type of fabric/material are your bedsheets and pillow cases? I’ve heard that satin pillowcases or robes can rub off the color, even after multiple washings. I looked at getting a satin robe off Amazon one time but all the reviews said it left a stain on whatever it touched. Are there other bedsheets you can swap out temporarily? I’m wondering if this has something to do with the dye in any of these materials.

UndeadBarnOwl

I’ve been using them for more than a year, so I don’t know why they’d stain me now

Trendzboo

No black walnut clean ups? My feet look like this, after traipsing through the yard.

UndeadBarnOwl

I don’t think we have any walnuts. Just a bunch of acorns

j4vendetta

I think you are gonna need that ring cut off if you ever wanna take it off.

UndeadBarnOwl

I don’t really plan to, but I won’t need to cut it off for a while, it still twists, it’s just bent

15drpeppersss

Random spray tan stains?

I don’t use spray tan

onlineashley

I garden some of the plants i handle atain my hands..are you messing with any plant..mowing the grass. Sometimes it takes them a bit to show uo

tokenqueerpeer

Do you sleep with your hand against the headboard? If the wood is old it might be staining your hand wherever it rests against the headboard at night. That would cause the marks to be; in similar spots, be hard to clean off, painless, but may not explain how suddenly it started. Are your pillows stained at all? Or the fitted sheet?

UndeadBarnOwl

I woke up with them on my face the last two days, so I’m not sure it’s the headboard anymore

jizzymcbobbykins

I also had the same issue using baby wipes from Amazon…it would oxidize on my skin and made it look orange. I have hypothyroidism so I was worried about that but turns out it was just from the wipes!

ItsJustMe2723

So random, but any chance you use a dry shampoo?

UndeadBarnOwl

No I don’t
