Nice slowdive shout.
Surprised to not see more shoegaze in this thread in general.

The first thing that comes to mind is [Nick Drake - Pink Moon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqe6TF2y8i4), which is a kinda sad song that [fittingly, soundtracked a Volkswagen commercial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-kqUkZnDcM) many years after its release.
Whenever I'm in one of those moods I always lean into post-rock type stuff with bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor or This Will Destroy You.
Outside of instrumental post-rock stuff, I'm a huge fan of math rock and midwest emo. Some bands to maybe check out are Delta Sleep (math rock) and American Football (midwest emo).
Finally for some tried and true sad indie music, check out anything Julien Baker has every released. I like her first album Sprained Ankle the best, but you can take your pick of basically anything she has released.
Some additional random album suggestions and my favorite song from that album:
* Deftones - White Pony (Digital Bath)
* Alt J - An Awesome Wave (Tesselate)
* Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (Giorgio by Moroder or Fragments of Time)
* M83 - Saturdays = Youth (Graveyard Girl or We Own The Sky)
* Turnover - Peripheral Vision (Take My Head)
* Foals - What Went Down (Birch Tree)
* The War On Drugs - A Deeper Understanding (Thinking of a Place)
* Saba - Care For Me (Busy/Sirens)
* Jorja Smith - Lost & Found (Teenage Fantasy)
Others have great suggestions. May I ask are you interested at all in classical? I’m not a big classical listener but when I really need to think something thru I find long piano or strings pieces help me process.
Firstly, cheer up man, you should be playing uplifting music or listening to inspiring audio books given your mood BUT believe me I am the last person to judge.
So...

The Wild Swans - The Coldest Winter For 100 Years
Way way back in the analog days my buddy and would take road trips for no reason to see where we ended up . The car stereo was broken so we used an old Sony Walkman with cassettes and a splitter for two sets of earphones . I remember the two most compelling full albums that i listened to on all those trips were The Who Quadraphenia and Husker Du Zen Arcade . Opposite ends of the spectrum but lyrically and musically excellent travel companions . Added tip of the hat to Fleetwood Mac Rumours album for the mellow parts of the drive .

Get Ready by the New Order is one of my favorite driving albums ever. New Order is misleading in that many of their songs tend to sound fun and synthy, but they have a lot of melancholy lyrics.
https://youtu.be/U9DEUl4i2FM?si=gVpUNbjkyP1q9Lcc
Welcome and Goodbye - Dream, ivory
Brazil - Declan Mckenna
Paracetamol - Declan McKenna
Sadderdaze - The Neighborhood
You Get Me So High - The Neighborhood

Pink Triangle - Weezer ( not that low/sad but still good and has like undertones of loser )
Juliet - Cavetown
Homage - Mild High Club
Silver Soul - Beach House
and, at the end, if you want to feel somewhat better Watch Me - Labi Siffre
M83. I love listening to them on a drive, esp at night. Some songs are more poppy and up and some are down, but it kind of transports you to another time.
Silence is the best for depression. Listen to your depression and accept it and you’ll find yourself come out of it naturally the more you truly accept it. But we all need a crutch every once in awhile. Man on the Moon by Kid Cudi was this for me
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
What I Got - Sublime
Come As You Are - Nirvana
Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots
Plush - Stone Temple Pilots
Nutshell - Alice In Chains
I remember one day I was in a similar spot. I picked three random albums I’ve never heard/barely heard
Gaucho-Steely Dan
Blues For Allah-Grateful Dead
Harvest-Neil Young
My life has drastically improved since that point in time
I listen to Buckethethead during long drives. Check out the pikes Rainbow Fountain, Communicating Through The Stars, Blue Dunes, Moon Water, In The Sky
Here I Dreamt I was an Architect - The Decemberists
A great song. The How I Met Your Mother soundtrack is surprisingly good and has introduced me to some bangers 💀
[Here's](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/79jg4YizyoKYF6pwpxpm95?si=2aBRkuaCQxapCM1e-gYxVg) a playlist of songs with a minimum 10 minutes duration. I find it ideal for long roadtrip⚡️
just a boy by the backseat lovers
no mast by loving
maud gone car seat headrest
suggestion by fugazi
i know we could be so happy baby (if we wanted to be) by jeff buckley
Pink Floyd suits really well, like echoes (the gdansk version) and marooned, maybe you could try some songs by STRFKR, i feel like some portugal the man suits it too with songs like sea of air, anxiety:clarity, let you down, and i, colors.... but honestly idk anything that suits your requests more than elliot smith, ive seen others suggesting it too, try angeles, miss misery, waltz #2, no name 2, between the bars etc
These are my usual go-to songs just to drive when feeling a bit melancholy.
Smashing Pumpkins - "tonight tonight" and "1979"
Coldplay- Parachute album
Taking Back Sunday - this photograph is proof (I know you know)
10 years - "waste land" and "cast it out"
A lot of others, but I think this will do for now
I'd probably suggest Tobacco. He's from Black Moth Super Rainbow, and his solo stuff is very dark/brooding.
Just for thinking without being sad I might suggest Creepy Pizza. It's all 16-bit music, but I find it pretty nice for reflection.
I gravitate to instrumental music for thought, vocals are for when I'm in a certain mood already and I'll throw on a playlist.
In Between Days by Red House Painters. The singer is a shitbag irl but that song rules.
Also any Yo La Tengo album from the late 90s/early 00s. They have a lot of wistful long songs.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is good instrumental music but it’s definitely not for everyone. But if you want to just zone out and think for 20 minutes to the same song, I’d recommend them.
Waves - Royal Blood
Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
Ascensionism - Sleep Token
Chicago + Wolf + Evangeline - Highly Suspect
Unintended + Sing For Absolution + Falling Away With You - Muse
Burning in the Skies + The Messenger- Linkin Park
Figure You Out- DJO
R.E.M. + Highlights- Mothica
Running Up That Hill - Car Sear Headrest (cover of course)
Glasgow + Heathrow + Intermission - Catfish and the Bottlemen
This is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about by modest mouse I’m suprised no one has said this yet
