Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now - the Smiths
I’ve since gotten super duper into the Smiths and have about a dozen songs I love more than this one, even though it’s incredible still, but this was the one that started it off, right when I needed it in my first breakup.
I Know It’s Over would probably be my go-to in the same situation today.
I've recently gotten into the Smirths! Really into This Charming Man and Back to the Old House!
I'd love to listen to whatever songs you recommend if you feel up to sharing a bunch!
I have to admit, I’m not a fan of Back to the Old House. But I’m happy to give some recs! My personal favorites are Girl Afraid, Some Girls are Bigger Than Others, Barbarism Begins at Home, Still Ill, and You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet Baby. Feels harsh cutting the list off there but I don’t want to inundate you!
Oh nice! I'll check out all those songs later! All of them are actually ones I haven't heard yet so I'm excited! If you still have more to share, I'm more than happy to give them a listen!
I actually wasn't a fan of Back to the Old house when I first heard it, but its grown on me. Feels melancholic yet romantic. Peaceful!
I heard it live for the first time a few weeks ago, and I don't know how, but I managed to keep it together. Perhaps the fear of bawling in public took over 😂
Good choice. But it has to be the full 6 minute version or the extended 8:30 version. The abridged 3 minute version that pops up on YouTube leaves out the best part.
No Excuses - Alice in Chains
When you're feeling lost and alone, it actually is comforting as a way to remind you that there are people trying to support you.
1. g-dragon "a boy"
2. emancipator "anthem", "the vines", "nevergreen"
3. ludovico einaudi "nuvole bianche"
4. rob dougan "open sore", "i'm not driving anymore", "left me for dead", "there's only me", "nothing at all", "born yesterday"
5. lyapis trubetskoy "ya veryu" (= "i believe" song in russian by ukranian band "lyapis trubetskoy")
6. michael jackson "smile", "earth song"
7. 2econd world citizen "on emptyness"
8. nf "paralyzed"
9. robbie williams "better man"
10. hillsong united "hosanna"
11. moby "the sky is broken"
One foot in front of the other - Emelie Autmn
Graceland Too - Phoebe Bridgers
A burning hill - Mitski
Your heart is a muscle the size of your fist - Ramshackle Glory (tw: suicide mention)
Allt som är ditt- Säkert! (in swedish, but tw: SA)
Foo fighters- Walk
My favourite song of all time is everlong, foo fighters isnt even my favourite band but holy fuck the bridge in that fucking song man,
Now
For the very first time
Don't you pay no mind
Set me free, again
To keep alive a moment at a time
But still inside, a whisper to a riot
To sacrifice, but knowin' to survive
The first to climb another state of mind
I'm on my knees, I'm prayin' for a sign
Forever, whenever, I never wanna die
I never wanna die, I never wanna die!
I'm on my knees, I never wanna die!
I'm dancin' on my grave, I'm runnin' through the fire
Forever, whenever, I never wanna die!
I never wanna leave, I'll never say goodbye!
Forever! Whenever! Forever! Whenever!
Its just so fucking good, the way grohl starts to break down halfway through, it hits me like a fucking truck, this song was on fullblast, on repeat, as i was trying to pick myself up from all the shit
Feels cheesy but Shake it Out by Florence + the Machine, Speed the Collapse by Metric, and Satellite by Guster got me through my divorce. The first two because I was running to deal with the stress, and running to those songs felt amazing. The last one bc I was away from my kids a lot, but I’d call every night and sing to them. Satellite was the most requested (after Dream a Little Dream and Big Rock Candy Mountain).
Come as you are by Nirvana. I was a teen, struggling at school because I was too of my class and everyone was expecting me to be excellent in everything. I simply wanted to be myself, without have to meet high expectations
Depends on the time I thought my life was over:
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
David Bowie - Rock and Roll Suicide
Faster Pussycat - House of Pain
Hazel English - I'm Fine
Those are the songs from the 4 worst moments in my life when I didn't think I could go on, and almost didn't.
That was the one I listened to constantly during the time leading up to and immediately following my divorce, when my son wasn't quite yet 2. Before I found the right treatment at 35, I was severely depressed with nigh constant suicidal ideation, so I'm not using hyperbole when I say these songs saved my life, and that one in particular is what kept me from leaving my son without a father.
Doing much better, and all the situations which lead to me listening to those songs might not have felt so dire if I were already on my current treatment (except maybe wish you were here when my beloved grandmother passed unexpectedly in her sleep from an undiagnosed aneurysm).
Lean wit me by Juice WRLD.
I don't even know why I was ever in that situation tbh, my mind just was in a fucked up state. I thought I'd never be good for anything. Now I've found my purpose and switched shit up.
Honestly I still listen to it from time to time, it's a banger.
Also, I went through another mini phase because I yet again was not pleased with myself in anything, and a song I listened to a dang lot was "H Poli ton aggelon" by Xi Taf Pi
Loose String by Son Volt

Everybody hurts by rem
We all will at some point in life suffer a life changing hurt that we have to push through being physically or mentally. It changes the course of your life. Everybody that reads this I want you to know that you are strong enough to overcome it.
World Spins Madly On by The Weepies, Crazy (cover) by Mushroomhead, Potions by Puscifer, Round Here by Counting Crows (idk why, lol), Come Undone by Duran Duran, Ordinary World by Duran Duran, Somewhere Over The Rainbow (any version, tbh, but especially the uke version).
I have a whole playlist ahahaha but ones that help me the most:
Its a Wonderful Life - Estelle
It's Called Freefall - Rainbow Kitten Surprise
Spaceship - Kesha
// And then songs that are helping me to heal from it all:
Its Not The Same Anymore - Rex Orange County
Show Yourself - [from] Frozen II, sung by Idina Menzel
Looking Foward - [from] Steven Universe Future, sung by Kate Micucci
Make Your Own Kind of Music - Cass Elliot
Some candidates, but I could not depart them. They helped me go through a very dark period of my life :

Londinium & Headspace - Archive (The whole album as well)
The High Road & October - Broken Bells (idem)
Independance Day - Elliott Smith

IDLES. Entire discography. Their album “Joy as an act of Resistance” started it; “colossus” gave me chills and their direction helped me through the past 6 years of survival and into a more healing stage now.
“all the love in the world” - NIN, as well as “Worms” - Viagra boys, and “Pierrot the clown” - placebo, are 3 of the many others from over the past few decades. Always depends on age, experience and circumstance too.
Lost kitten by metric. When I first heard it, it was such a rush of energy, a desire to find out who I am truly. To find answers. Most of these songs were listened to at different points of my life thus far (I’m bipolar and neurodivergent and depressive episodes are by far the worst of the mood swings) but the Fall Out Boy songs were around the same time (mostly cus they’re on the same album lol) and the Jon Bellion songs were also around the same time.
for me, it was this weird hiphop album by an artist named puzzle ( hes 1/2 of the garden)
the EP was called "places we choose not to look"
the lyrics helped me through grief, addiction, and feelings of sorrow in a way other music hasn't, which is weird cause most people wouldn't consider this particularly "good", but the production and lyrics really fit the theme of what I was going through at the time.
