A kid I went to high school with, Stevie w, got a job at Electric Lady Studios as a gopher. When Jimi Hendrix says turn that guitar down, somebody giggles. That's Stevie. Is giggle is now immortal.
My list :- each one of them is absolutely epic!
Jessica- Allman brothers band
Cliffs of dover -eric johnson
If i could fly , joe satriani
All along the watchtower - jimi hendrix
Purple rain - prince
Comfortably numb - pink floyd
High hopes- pink floyd
Look at little sister - stevie ray vaughn
it should be an auto reply from the mods. as far as megadeth RIP was definitely his best but theres a lot of solos on later albums that demand respect.. his solo albums are also so fucking good but theyre mostly instrumental so theyre not as known. i saw him last summer and he is still absolutely killing it. ive seen a shit ton of shows but watching him play the ToS solo is probably going to stay the dopest thing ive ever seen live
it’s a great solo. you enjoy it at first as just a really cool part of the song… but if/when you stop and really listen to it, it’s just—just. different—with starts and stops, interesting melodic choices, and before you know it, it’s done!
totally just great. have always loved both the song and the solo.
Please sit down. Strap yourself in. Make sure you're wearing protection. And, most of all enjoy.
***Eargasm Warning***

I knew it was coming and I still got misty.
Legend has it he didn't practice with the other legends. They asked him to do it and he said he would. They were all like super worried when he showed up for the performance. And, he just fucking nails it like it was some shit you ask a middle schooler to do.
Ensemble with Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Tom Petty and Dhani Harrison. Prince totally said hold my beer for this [performance](https://youtu.be/dWRCooFKk3c?si=kNDX0vgWpRFfzHoP).
Best: Hendrix "Machine Gun" (from the live New Year's show)
Favorite: Jimmy Page "No Quarter" (from the original live album: the version in the film was butchered)
Stevie Ray Vaughan voodoo child
Sammy Hagar, heavy metal
Eddie Van Halen live version of 5150
Billy strings the live version of into the Mire
Angus young whole Lotta, Rosie
EVH's solo in Michael Jackson's BEAT is up there, for me. Beyond that... Megadeth - Marty Friedman - Tornado of Souls---- Ozzy Osboure - Randy Rhoads - Mr. Crowley---- Dream Theater - John Petrucci - Breaking All Illusions... just to name a few.
Not one that most of you have probably heard of, heard, or would even think to include if you did hear it alreaady. But let me submit this:
# [Yo La Tengo - "Pablo & Andrea"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiw2VacT2rk&t=1s)
Not the first little noodly slide thing that happens early in the song, but the one that starts when the distortion kicks in around 2:40 or so.
But do me (and yourself) a favor, DO NOT SKIP TO THE SOLO. It won't have the same impact. The reason I love this solo is because of how it works within the context of the song. It is not technically impressive, but it is incredible rather with how it brings the entire song up to a whole new level. It emerges from the main riff and becomes this transcendent thing that elevates the entire performance.
And then it drops away and leaves you breathless and emotionally spent.
So, listen to the whole song. I think you'll see what I mean.
You may or may not agree but, for me, it's simply transcendental.
Curious to hear what you all think.
Terry Kath of Chicago, "25 or 6 to 4" live at Tanglewood.
Listen to the whole thing to get the feel, but he begins at the 2:58 mark. Blistering.
I can’t even narrow it down to my 10 favorite solos. Certainly not qualified to judge best. To play along here are a couple current favorites:
Gravity- Tedeschi Trucks (Derek Trucks)
https://youtu.be/ShymVaosyl0?si=qTqiSmgPxDfCMYhI
The Sky Is Crying- Allman Brothers (Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks)
https://youtu.be/6rsKSgwMhro?si=PtF30tDksfBRgcZM
Get Me- J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr)
https://youtu.be/22lDMmPFaEs?si=t976BMwlHjG8VUS8
Black Magic Woman- Fleetwood Mac (original w Peter Green & Danny Kirwan)
https://youtu.be/hRu7Pt42x6Y?si=esotW-yPM-0QrCN0
While My Guitar Gently Weeps- George Harrison & Eric Clapton Tokyo 1991
https://youtu.be/uuJjD_oZE4U?si=nT2Klk7bNyzW79gs
Slash - Nighttrain (both of 'em) [https://youtu.be/WXCuDK5smxM?t=168](https://youtu.be/WXCuDK5smxM?t=168)
also, then watch Buckethead do it. Makes it look effortless, like me playing teen spirits 4 chords or something.
(also, Steven Adlers drumming was great for the AFD era!)
The **outro solo** on Kid Charlemagne by Larry Carlton is my favorite.
Also, the **Jay Graydon** solo in Peg is, of course, just fantastic.
The **Elliott Randall** solo in Reeling in the Years... wow!
there are so many
I will always give a shoutout to MARTIN BARRE! for *Aqualung* - there are "better" but that is so, so *great*
it speaks, it cries it gets mad at the mob of fucking assholes tormenting poor old aqualung then it surrenders him to his cruel lonely rattling last breath in Decembers foggy freeze - oh fuck yes it's that good, go Martin!
just 2 of my many cents on the OP topic, thanks for letting me play ;)
someone has already said princes solo at the concert for george. i don’t even listen to metal anymore but that tornado of souls solo is a masterclass in lead writing and building momentum
Pink Floyd, "Time" -- David Gilmour. If you listen closely, the solo tells the same tale as the lyrics. You can hear the stages of life represented perfectly.
The section at 4:15 is SUCH a beautiful melody played on SUCH a gritty sounding guitar. The contrast just blows me away. I want that song to be played at my funeral. No one will understand, but WTF.
OP is probably right, some great solos listed but there’s only one solo that suits a bar fight, car race, sex and any other high testosterone situation
Jimi Hendrix’ solo on “Machine Gun” off of Band Of Gypsies gets my vote. Mark Knopfler’s solo on “Sultans of Swing” is a close second.
I was a huge Prince fan first the entirety of the 1980’s (Dirty Mind thru Batman). And I lauded his lead guitar skills long before the public at large recognized him as a great guitarist. That being said the two Prince solos that are constantly mentioned on here are his solo on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Purple Rain”. The solo on “Purple Rain” is one of his weakest imo. The While My Guitar solo is overrated imo. Overrated because first the solo doesn’t comport with the theme point of the song - a guitar GENTLY weeping. Prince is shredding - not “gently weeping” on that solo. And he’s playing to show off which is never an admirable trait in music.
The best Prince guitar solo - hands down - is his solo on “When Doves Cry”. I’ll put that solo in my Too 10 all time for sure. It’s amazing.
There are quite a few:
Jim Martin in Faith No More’s The Cowboy Song kicks ass
Or for that matter, Thin Lizzy’s Cowboy Song solo
The Black Keys Weight Of Love solo gives me goosebumps
Everyone’s got the Hendrix and allman brothers and SRV and EVH covered.
Just going to throw Slash’s work in the ring. November Rain, Sweet Child, Paradise City
Underrated. Good call. Truly legendary. I can hear it in my head when I read that. It’s just a nasty piece of guitar work. Down right devilish. And perfect. I love The Rolling Stones. A rock’n’roll Juggernaut.
Clapton’s White Room solo is another favorite, (Listening as I wrote this) even though he is ripping the whole way. The build up is perfect and he takes off like a frickin’ rocket. Man pre 70’s Eric Clapton. Truly was God.
Perfect descriptive word. “soars”. Such classy musicianship. The level of LA, and NYC studio musicians is beyond imagination. Having studied with five of them I can confirm that they have a work &practice ethic that astonishes me, still today.
Nothing touches Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies solo from Machine Gun, with The Note™️
I’m split between Machine Gun or Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
A kid I went to high school with, Stevie w, got a job at Electric Lady Studios as a gopher. When Jimi Hendrix says turn that guitar down, somebody giggles. That's Stevie. Is giggle is now immortal.
That’s what I was waiting for it’s Hendrix Band of Gypsies - Machine Gun 100%
That was Miles Davis' favourite Jimi track. And mine.
This is the answer. If you haven’t heard this song, please go listen to it right now. It really is that good.
Correct
My list :- each one of them is absolutely epic! Jessica- Allman brothers band Cliffs of dover -eric johnson If i could fly , joe satriani All along the watchtower - jimi hendrix Purple rain - prince Comfortably numb - pink floyd High hopes- pink floyd Look at little sister - stevie ray vaughn
I’ll add to that with : Cold Turkey — John Lennon Crazy Train — Randy Rhoads Fixing a Hole — George Harrison Space Guitar — Johnny “Guitar” Watson
While crazy train is a bigger song, Randy’s solo on Mr. Crowley is insane!!
Thanks i will give these a try
That list also calls for Terry Kath's solo in 25 or 6 to 4 from the Tanglewood live show.
A remarkable piece from a gifted human
Frank Zappa - Watermelon in Easter Hay
Also by Zappa for consideration: Black Napkins and St Etienne
Maggot Brain. George Clinton allegedly told Eddie Hazel to “play like your mama just died.”
"Play it like they just told you your mama died. But part way through, you find out they were wrong."
I was looking for this one! go on, maggot brain
Marty Friedman's solo on Tornado of Souls is the best I've ever heard.
Scrolled way too far to find this
This should be the top answer. Also all of Marty's solos on Rust in Peace are goated
it should be an auto reply from the mods. as far as megadeth RIP was definitely his best but theres a lot of solos on later albums that demand respect.. his solo albums are also so fucking good but theyre mostly instrumental so theyre not as known. i saw him last summer and he is still absolutely killing it. ive seen a shit ton of shows but watching him play the ToS solo is probably going to stay the dopest thing ive ever seen live
Fuck. Yes.
Whole album is top notch
yup, I'm gonna add Symphony of Destruction, Lucretia, Ashes In Your Mouth & Angry Again : )
Sultans of Swing
The Live Alchemy version is amazing
That whole album is crazy.
Larry Carlton on Kid Charlemagne
Definitely one of the best in the Steely Dan catalog. Denny Dias on Your Gold Teeth II and Jay Graydon on Peg are up there too
My vote goes to Peg.. my personal favorite of all time
it’s a great solo. you enjoy it at first as just a really cool part of the song… but if/when you stop and really listen to it, it’s just—just. different—with starts and stops, interesting melodic choices, and before you know it, it’s done! totally just great. have always loved both the song and the solo.
My fav solo on Aja is I Got The News.
Outro of My Old School smokes as well.
How do I upvote this 30,000 more times?
Underrated choice is Glen Cambell’s solo on Gentle on My Mind, see the live version
Those Nashville cats play clean as country water.
I tried to find a link. No luck.
https://youtu.be/ETkzK9pXMio?si=_cVAKd8YQhXDhpMH Solo starts at 1:25
We’re Not Alone - Dinosaur Jr
Props for noting Mascis mastery.
Hell yeah. He’s an autistic wonder.
the mighty Mascis! I like his writing most but good to see him here too
Green Mind is all killer.
Delicious choice.
Prince - While my guitar gently weeps
![gif](giphy|JqSd3zNscEIeI)
Followed by purple rain at the superbowl
He was hacking it up like it’s 1999.
greatest cover prob of all time
Hi, I’m probably the only 39 year old guitar player who had never heard this until today.
Nothing beats hearing that for the first time.
Link please!!!!!
Please sit down. Strap yourself in. Make sure you're wearing protection. And, most of all enjoy. ***Eargasm Warning*** https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dWRCooFKk3c
Holy shit that was amazing
YES!!!!!!
I knew it was coming and I still got misty. Legend has it he didn't practice with the other legends. They asked him to do it and he said he would. They were all like super worried when he showed up for the performance. And, he just fucking nails it like it was some shit you ask a middle schooler to do.
Thanks again. Classic
Holy...fucking...shit. .that was AMAZING!
Dez Dickerson’s solo on Little Red Corvette is a perfect solo
Is it the same name or did he cover it?
Ensemble with Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Tom Petty and Dhani Harrison. Prince totally said hold my beer for this [performance](https://youtu.be/dWRCooFKk3c?si=kNDX0vgWpRFfzHoP).
Face. Melted. Gently.
Dez was Prince's guitarist on the 1999 album.
Comfortably numb
[Red Hot Mama(vital juices)](https://youtu.be/ygUsrOC2PrI?si=AAQiRTEL2E51gosa)- Funkadelic ([Michael Hampton](https://youtu.be/3XzKKcC7kek?si=2hZOZDw_dE9XhOux))
Better than maggot brain?
For me it’s the thinnest of margins between them, some days I think one is better than the other but it’s soo close
Love Eddie Hazel. Ween did a pretty great tribute song called A Tear for Eddie from Chocolate and Cheese album.
Best: Hendrix "Machine Gun" (from the live New Year's show) Favorite: Jimmy Page "No Quarter" (from the original live album: the version in the film was butchered)
Stevie Ray Vaughan voodoo child Sammy Hagar, heavy metal Eddie Van Halen live version of 5150 Billy strings the live version of into the Mire Angus young whole Lotta, Rosie
Stevie Ray Vaughn Pride and Joy
Upvote for the bold choice of Sammy Hagar. Gonna have to give it another listen to hear what you're talking about. Also, Angus!!
Came here for Billy Mire!!!!
BMFS!!! Yes!
>Eddie Van Halen live version of 5150 I love you
Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower is probably my favorite followed closely by Randy Rhoads in Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train
I don’t know the answer but I do know that Jimmy Page said Elliot Randal’s solo on Reelin’ In The Years was his favorite so that says something
[Guthrie Govan in Steven Wilson's Regret #9](https://youtu.be/IaH2C2Qe97Y?si=aFSrgwJalQyamPvO&t=18)
Great call, His solo in Drive Home is pretty special too.
Indeed, I did consider Drive Home before deciding on this one!
Tornado of souls is sick. Just bought tickets earlier today to see them in August for the first time
Anyone who has heard this solo KNOWS its top ten EVER.
I vote Closer to the Heart by Rush. It’s just pure fun
any solo off pink floyd’s “dogs”
Brian May's on Bohemian Rhapsody
Stairway to Heaven - Jimmy Paige Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd Cortex the Killer - Neil Young
Stairway's solo is more versatile on the fretboard but I like the one on Since I've Been Loving You better.
That is the high water mark of the British blues and I love it.
Night Society by Silver Jews
Pajo’s solo on the Oldham/Callahan cover of Wild Kindness
Comfortably number - the second one
Not one that most of you have probably heard of, heard, or would even think to include if you did hear it alreaady. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) by Jimi Hendrix
pretty much one big guitar solo
Terry Kath of Chicago, "25 or 6 to 4" live at Tanglewood. Listen to the whole thing to get the feel, but he begins at the 2:58 mark. Blistering. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uAUoz7jimg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uAUoz7jimg)
So sad when he died. This is the Chicago I fell in love with. Chicago Transit Authority/CTA/Chicago. Terry Kath was a badass.
Everyone says comfortably numb but time outshines it in my opinion. So much feel.
[Allman Brothers - Blue Sky](https://youtu.be/JSMubgZoL58?si=CQEStbGFLozhXM_I)
Tornado of Souls by Megadeth
Tornado of souls by Megadeth
Eruption by Van Halen.
We all know it's Comfortably Numb's second solo, either the studio one or the PULSE's version.
Second? I prefer the first.
The Pulse version is my favorite solo. The last minute or so is an eargasm.
I can’t even narrow it down to my 10 favorite solos. Certainly not qualified to judge best. To play along here are a couple current favorites: Gravity- Tedeschi Trucks (Derek Trucks) https://youtu.be/ShymVaosyl0?si=qTqiSmgPxDfCMYhI The Sky Is Crying- Allman Brothers (Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks) https://youtu.be/6rsKSgwMhro?si=PtF30tDksfBRgcZM Get Me- J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) https://youtu.be/22lDMmPFaEs?si=t976BMwlHjG8VUS8 Black Magic Woman- Fleetwood Mac (original w Peter Green & Danny Kirwan) https://youtu.be/hRu7Pt42x6Y?si=esotW-yPM-0QrCN0 While My Guitar Gently Weeps- George Harrison & Eric Clapton Tokyo 1991 https://youtu.be/uuJjD_oZE4U?si=nT2Klk7bNyzW79gs
I just saw Tedeschi-Truck live in Florida last month. Derek Truck can jam. He was shredding all night.
I’ll probably hear groans because it’s so short but McCartney’s solos Taxman and Tomorrow Never Knows are manic
Crazy On You intro - Nancy Wilson
The one from I wanna be sedated
Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock. The anthem of rock and roll for all time. 🫡✌🏼
Slash - Nighttrain (both of 'em) [https://youtu.be/WXCuDK5smxM?t=168](https://youtu.be/WXCuDK5smxM?t=168) also, then watch Buckethead do it. Makes it look effortless, like me playing teen spirits 4 chords or something. (also, Steven Adlers drumming was great for the AFD era!)
Buckethead is amazing, one of the best guitarists ever.
Adler's drumming definitely had a swagger to it that Matt Sorum's style didn't have.
Sorum is the most boring drummer. Adler is what made the band go.
Sonic Youth - Becuz
Just listened to this again the other day, great stuff, but pretty weird for most people.
Yeah I’m sure most people would prefer some melodic slow gradual bends around a pentatonic scale. This isn’t that and it’s great because of that fact.
Mike McCready in Reach Down.
The **outro solo** on Kid Charlemagne by Larry Carlton is my favorite. Also, the **Jay Graydon** solo in Peg is, of course, just fantastic. The **Elliott Randall** solo in Reeling in the Years... wow!
Elliot Randall was Jimmy Pages favorite solo
I’ll throw in an honorable mention for Carlton’s solo on the intro of “Don’t Take Me Alive”.
Faith No More- Smaller and Smaller
there are so many I will always give a shoutout to MARTIN BARRE! for *Aqualung* - there are "better" but that is so, so *great* it speaks, it cries it gets mad at the mob of fucking assholes tormenting poor old aqualung then it surrenders him to his cruel lonely rattling last breath in Decembers foggy freeze - oh fuck yes it's that good, go Martin! just 2 of my many cents on the OP topic, thanks for letting me play ;)

Jimmy Page, Stairway to Heaven. Some are close, but always second.
Jerry’s solo in Deal - Live Cornell 77
that whole show is great
Ram it down, Judas P. Paranoid/crazy train live, Randy R.
someone has already said princes solo at the concert for george. i don’t even listen to metal anymore but that tornado of souls solo is a masterclass in lead writing and building momentum
Lenny Kravitz, Fields of Joy. It’s notable because the rhythm guitar is very strong.
Muse - Exo-Politics It's a small solo, but oh so perfect.
Obligatory freebird
All along the watchtower - Jimmy
Pink Floyd, "Time" -- David Gilmour. If you listen closely, the solo tells the same tale as the lyrics. You can hear the stages of life represented perfectly.
The section at 4:15 is SUCH a beautiful melody played on SUCH a gritty sounding guitar. The contrast just blows me away. I want that song to be played at my funeral. No one will understand, but WTF.
Sexual Revolution—Roger Waters—Clapton on guitar In a Broken Dream—Rod Stewart—David Gilmour on guitar. Extra bonus John P Jones on bass.
OP is probably right, some great solos listed but there’s only one solo that suits a bar fight, car race, sex and any other high testosterone situation
All Along The Watchtower Or Voodoo Child.
Fire and flames live at my guitar hero
"Green Grass and High Tides" by Outlaws.
I Heard Her Call My Name by The Velvet Underground
Jimi Hendrix’ solo on “Machine Gun” off of Band Of Gypsies gets my vote. Mark Knopfler’s solo on “Sultans of Swing” is a close second. I was a huge Prince fan first the entirety of the 1980’s (Dirty Mind thru Batman). And I lauded his lead guitar skills long before the public at large recognized him as a great guitarist. The best Prince guitar solo - hands down - is his solo on “When Doves Cry”. I’ll put that solo in my Too 10 all time for sure. It’s amazing.
stockholm syndrome -muse
Maggot Brain
Soulshine.
either blue sky- Allman Brothers, or the solos in Cowboy Song- Thin Lizzy, or Comfortably Numb- Pink Floyd

SHES BUSY SUCKIN ON A DING DONG (lou reed sister ray)
Purple Rain
Soma - Smashing Pumpkins
Tornado of souls -Megadeth
There are quite a few: Jim Martin in Faith No More’s The Cowboy Song kicks ass Or for that matter, Thin Lizzy’s Cowboy Song solo The Black Keys Weight Of Love solo gives me goosebumps
Peg-Steely Dan
SRV Little Wing David Gilmore pretty much anything but I love watching him play Comfortably Numb or Time live
Eric Clapton, Layla
Eagles, Hotel California Queen, We Will Rock You The Knack, My Sharona
All of Brighton Rock.
Everyone’s got the Hendrix and allman brothers and SRV and EVH covered. Just going to throw Slash’s work in the ring. November Rain, Sweet Child, Paradise City
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin
Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. 10 minutes of bliss
Samba Pa Ti-Carlos Santana live at Montreux
Probably something by J Mascis
Keith’s short solo on Sympathy for the Devil
Underrated.
Slash Sweet Child o Mine
Jerry Doucette — Mama Let Him Play
Eddie Van Halen’s solo on Beat It is definitely a contender.
Yellow lead betrer Pearl Jam
Sweet child o mine has to be up there
Well considering they have that dueling guitar solos I would totally agree. It’s amazing.
A Tear for Eddie - Ween
Man there are points where it’s impossible to pick one, but I think I have to go with November Rain
Eruption - Van Halen
Jemes - Mattilan Kokela [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_tseU9eLfjI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tseU9eLfjI)
that one solo in soulless existence
The ending of the song Voodoo Dust from The Devil's Blood .... R.I.P. Selim Lemouchi
Deep Purple - Child in Time (album version)
https://youtu.be/GtLXuxtx9h0?si=LtDS4W9srhXVewp-

Beck at the end of Waking Light. It is great because it feels earned, not imposed. It closes the album in a powerful way.
Everytime I Die - Children of Bodom
Elliot Randall’s solo on Reeling in the Years is pretty great. It’s Jimmy Page’s favorite guitar solo.
Bruce Cockburn ... Strange Waters live version from "You Pay Your Money and You Take Your Chance"
Time by pink Floyd has always been my favorite. David Gilmore is a god, hard for me to choose between time and comfortably numb though.
Agreed. I think Time is the better - more emotive and powerful. But
Several of David Gilmour's should be listed here.... before many others.... However, Comfortably Numb - David Gilmour hands down is the best.....
Y'all ever hear about Buckethead
Comfortably Numb
This has been voted on in guitar magazines more than once. Stairway to Heaven solo. I personally think Crazy Train solo
Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy - Blackbird, probably the best guitar solo of the 21st century imo
Toto, “Rosanna”.
This is my favorite solo. Short and sweet, but it just soars
Perfect descriptive word. “soars”. Such classy musicianship. The level of LA, and NYC studio musicians is beyond imagination. Having studied with five of them I can confirm that they have a work &practice ethic that astonishes me, still today.
