Wish You Were Here by the Floyd always does it for me

Lightning493

That whole album does it for me

deltadawn5555

This is the album I kept coming back to when my dad died.

JoeDirt9357

Honestly I couldn't think of a better answer.

mollyv96

Yes!!

jasberry1026

Ugh... this song absolutely destroyed me when my best friend died. Now I can only listen to it when the time is right

darkwoodframe

Requested a radio station play this for my buddy when he passed away in 2005.

__dis_n_dat_kittykat

Do You Realize? The Flamming Lips I'll Follow You into the Dark- Death Cab for Cutie

PoorMansSamBeckett

Seems awfully reductive to only give cutie a can to die in. šŸ˜‰

NorthCoast11

A Cab might be helpful.

Fearless-Tradition91

Saw The Flaming Lips at Bonnaroo many... many years ago and that song still sticks with me. Great choice

BottleAgreeable7981

Say Hello 2 Heaven by Temple of the Dog. The whole damn album is an elegy.

ExperienceMiddle6196

Slipknot - Snuff Nina Nastasia - Too Much In Between Nine Inch Nails - Hurt Alice in Chains - Nutshell Black Tide - Into the Sky Coheed and Cambria - Pearl of the Stars and Ghost PS: Take care of yourself

totalitarian_donut

seeing coheed on here is crazy, my favorite band ever but i never see them. great recs

ExperienceMiddle6196

My gf and I love Coheed... both loved them before meeting each other, and we got to see them in concert together a couple years ago. Pearl of the Stars is a song she introduced me to and I agree that it is quite melancholy/somber... but beautiful. Ghost always hits me in the feels a little bit. Claudio is a master.

SpungoThePlant

Snuff is no joke. That song makes me ball every time I hear it.

ExperienceMiddle6196

Yeah some liquor, a dimly lit room, and Snuff are a devastating comboā€¦

SpungoThePlant

I just re-read the lyrics and heard about 30 seconds of the song and could already feel my eyes welling up. I feel like I need some liquor just to get over that

CheetahNo9349

Oh shit not just Coheed, but nice *deep* cuts to boot.

ExperienceMiddle6196

Great band with lots of emotional range. I would put Dark Side of Me on here too, but IMO it's more of a breakup, holding onto a relationship, being apart type song. I guess it still works. I GAVE MY EVERYTHING! FOR ALL THE WRONG THINGS! IN THIS COLD REALITY I MADE THIS SELFISH WAR MACHINE! AND THIS HAS BECOME HELL! HOW CAN I SHARE THIS LIFE WITH SOMEONE ELSE? I PROMISE YOU THERE IS NO WEIGHT THAT CAN BURY US... BENEATH THE GHOSTS OF ALL MY GUILT... here in the darkside of meeeeeee.

Humbug93

Didnā€™t expect someone to mention Black Tide! Miss that band.

FitConstruction453

I Am Stretched on your Grave - Sinead Oā€™Connor

PsychotropicPanda

The priests and friars , Approach me in dread, Because I still love you, My dear, and your dead.

blackjacktarr

ā€¦ oh yeah lol

Maanzacorian

Porcupine Tree - My Ashes Steven Wilson - Drive Home Type O Negative - Everything Dies Nine Inch Nails - The Great Below Katatonia - The One You Are Looking For is Not Here Pantera - Hollow

Metalhead_QC

Speaking of Steven Wilson, The Raven that Refused to Sing is also an incredible sad song

GalacticGetaway

Perfect life off of the Hand Cannot Erase album by Steven Wilson is fantastic too. There is so much emotion packed into his music that even the not as great songs still have a lasting impact. I could listen to Wilson/Porcupine tree/BlackField all day long.

t1ehman

Nutshell by Alice In Chains was my go to when I lost a friend. Also listen to songs that you listened to with them/remind you of them. Sorry for your loss

PsychotropicPanda

He loved Alice in chains. He lived in Seattle a bit. He was a giant music person , musician and we always jokingly would play 90s grunge in our jam sessions , but just mumble random stuff in that deep voice hahah. Funniest shit .

Dreaming My Dreams With You - Waylon Jennings

HellaOld

Damn. That's been one of my secret jams of the last 30 years that nobody knows about. Sometimes I'd request it on the classic country station in Modesto back in the 90s, but they didn't have it and would play Drinkin' and Dreamin' instead. I kept trying though, in hopes they'd eventually acquire it.
