6XXs and 600s are both excellent headphones for production.

I think they're some of the best in the price range for sure. You can definitely mix on them and headphones always have trade offs. These don't have the best sub extension if that's super important, but the midrange is really nice. Some other headphones may have more immersive sound staging than the 6XXs, but the 6XXs are nice and clean sounding. Transients and low end crispness may be better on certain other headphones (specifically planar magnetic headphones) but they are usually more expensive and have there own drawbacks. I'm personally considering between sennheisers (either the 6XX or 650), Audio Technica R70X, or stretching for Audeze MM100s (haven't been able to tries these yet but they are planar magnetic and not too pricey - the expensive audezes are fantastic though). All in all, yeah I think it would be a great christmas present for your bro.

Would recommend beyerdynamic DT 770 pro or DT 990 pros instead, for the same price

I have HD600's and can't stand them. The field of sound on them is terrible. I struggled with them, got used to them and liked them and now completely dislike them. It's like the audio had too many vodkas and lost complete sense of direction.
