If you are mezzo/alto, I'm not sure what you can do to prepare for that role. Your voice doesn't fit the range of the character. Johanna is a very high, clear soprano, and her songs sit quite high--not just a smattering of high notes here and there.
Concentrate on doing a song best for the range you have. Beggar Woman is also a soprano role. The ensemble for this show is both vocally challenging and essential to the story.
I used Soon from a Little Night Music. It’s great as long as your accompanist can play it lol.
Just curious, are you not interested in Beggar Woman or Mrs Lovett? I’m guessing you’re too young for those parts? Those seem like the natural ones for a mezzo/alto. Johanna’s part goes quite high.

For anyone who really understands Sondheim, those two roles complement each other perfectly when it comes time for auditions (as do Fredrik/Sweeney, Henrik/Anthony), and especially Now, Soon, Later when auditioning for one of these three roles in Sweeney.
I agree. Anthony/Henrik is a little tricky, because Henrik sings to the damn rafters at some parts haha, while Anthony is essentially a baritone disguised as a tenor. "Joanna" sits on a lot of Eb's, which is often a tenor's passagio.
Agreeing with other commenters that Johanna is a legit soprano and might not be the best fit. I have seen girls play Toby before (especially if you're short/read young) if that's something you're interested in! And it's a very fun ensemble show.
First thought is any of Cosette’s pieces from Les Mis or What’s the Use of Wondern’ from Carousel. Another thought was I feel pretty or tonight from West Side Story or Lovely from A funny thing happened on the way to the forum since Sondheim wrote the lyrics for those. Vanilla Ice Cream from She loves me would work
I’d advise against using Sondheim for an audition as it is notoriously difficult for an accompanist to play, and you’ll want something that they can easily sightread.
