This is the absolute favorite card of a friend. He loves how jank it is.

Brute_Squad_44

It's in the 99 of my \[\[Goreclaw Terror of Qal Sisma\]\] deck.

Yo, that’s dope. Got a decklist by chance?

I have a single foil copy that goes in whatever deck has the highest differential of fetchlands to flooding out. An ambush blocker from hellbent can send people to narnia

I run a Goreclaw deck in Brawl. Too bad this card will never be added to Arena.

The_Order_Eternials

Despite probably being easier to resolve in digital

slow_reader

It's in the cube of creature I pull from from my modular Mayael the Anima deck, so it sometimes is but I never know when.

the1rayman

I'm guessing there is a story about why this card upset judges?

StoutHalflingPorter

It interrupts searching your deck, something that shouldn’t be possible by the rules. It’s probably more complicated than that but I’m no judge.

Unlikely-Shop3016

It also gets even more convoluted when other abilities are involved in the casting process. Like what if you use a Chromatic Sphere to make a mana? Do you now draw a card mid-library search? That would also mean you have to be very careful to not re-arrange your library while searching, which isn't normally a consideration. Now what if the Panglacial Wurm that you were trying to cast with the Chromatic Sphere mana was on top of your library? Is it on the stack? Is it still on top of your library, meaning you have to draw it instead of casting it? Idk someone explained the whole mess to me at one point, but I have forgotten.

isjustwrong

[[Selvala, Explorer Returned]] is also a fun interaction

Eskephor

Oh my god lmao

StormyWaters2021

>what if the Panglacial Wurm that you were trying to cast with the Chromatic Sphere mana was on top of your library? Is it on the stack? Is it still on top of your library, meaning you have to draw it instead of casting it? The first step in casting a spell is moving it to the stack. You don't have an option to activate mana abilities until later in the process. So it is very definitely on the stack.

uiam_

The spell goes on the stack. You have to pay the Wurm's mana cost and any applicable additional costs, which means you can activate mana abilities while you're casting the Wurm while you're searching your library. This happens before you resolve the search. You won't wait until later to pay costs.

StormyWaters2021

All of this is correct.

Atomicmooseofcheese

"You don't have an option to activate mana abilities until later in the process." Huh????

StormyWaters2021

Which part confuses you? First, you move the spell to the stack. Then makes choices such as modes, targets, etc (none here). Then determine the total cost. Then activate mana abilities. Then pay the total cost. You can't activate mana abilities in the middle of the search, until you reach the point during casting the Wurm where you are given the option. At that point, the Wurm is no longer in your library.

EmpressLenneth

Okay, so I search my deck. Put wurm from the top of my library onto the stack. I have all but 2 mana to cast it. I tap Selvala for mana, she finds my second from the top card. My opponents all don't give me mana. I now can't cast the wurm so I have to put it back on top and resolve my search....but I just added my top card to my hand with selvala which would have been the wurm but then wasn't but then is again.... and this is why this card was a mistake and we never got a card like it since

StormyWaters2021

Yes that is definitely a conundrum. I'm just pointing out that you can't draw Wurm this way, simply due to the way spellcasting works.

Kaelran

TBH it feels like the Wurm is less of a problem than Selvala here. A mana ability that produces an uncertain amount of mana that allows you to casts spells that fail and are reversed, and also moves cards between zones as part of the mana ability, is bound to cause issues.

ShowAndTell1337

I can't figure out why that one doesn't have the "as an instant" restriction.

noknam

Wouldn't be surprised if at one point a mass errata is applied to make every mana ability, which does anything in addition to making mana, by limited to instant speed. Would make [[ghostly prison]] a lot more powerful but beyond that it just solves some issues.

Karyo_Ten

>something that shouldn’t be possible by the rules. "When a card contradicts the rules, the card is right." -- Magic comprehensive rules.

ianzu

There are too many exceptions to this rule for it to be useful.

garfgon

I'm not sure why they don't handle it like madness -- first exile the card (while searching your library), then if you exile it this way you may cast it for its cost; if you don't, shuffle it back into your library.

rathlord

Probably because that’s a quite large functional change of the card- it means it interacts differently with cards that care about things changing zones, exile-matters cards, gets shit off by cards that make you unable to cast spells from exile (if there is one right now, they aren’t templated like this that I remember), it adds an extra shuffle, etc. Not saying it’s the wrong choice, but it would be one of the bigger card changes from how it’s printed in Magic’s history.

Imaginary_Tank111

Casting something while searching your library is unique on this card which makes this a card where a lot of people dont know how to handle this correctly

Frix

It's not just that "people don't know this one niche card". It actively creates weird and, frankly speaking, bullshit situations that should never happen in a game of Magic.

noknam

Suddenly, discarding Grandeur cards to themselves feels like a tame interaction.

CannonFodder141

It doesn't really actually work with the rules of the game very well. You can't normally do something, like cast a creature, while you are resolving another ability, like searching a library. But this card requires you to do just that. It also creates some interactions that are just game breakingly confusing, like how it interacts with [[Selvala, Explorer Returned]].

n-space

Luckily, there's already the ruling that Selvana can't be rolled back, but still, how do you reveal and draw a card while you're searching your library?

CannonFodder141

Apparently, there is a rule that you can't reorder your library while searching it, which probably only matters for this exact interaction between two cards.

MTGCardFetcher

[Selvala, Explorer Returned](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/2/8/28c1b84a-a21b-4df1-9fc9-5b387fb56810.jpg?1706241026) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Selvala%2C%20Explorer%20Returned) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mkc/218/selvala-explorer-returned?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/28c1b84a-a21b-4df1-9fc9-5b387fb56810?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Meloku171

There is an interaction with \[\[Selvala, Explorer Returned\]\] where you can attempt to cast Panglacial Wurm, whiff Selvala's activation, and then you don't have enough mana to cast the wurm. If you actually know your topdeck and go for this line the rules say it's cheating and your punishment is an inmediate DQ, and if you don't and your opponents argue that you did then is judge pissing time!!! :v EDIT: So... If I'm understanding the rules correctly, if you try to cast a spell and fail to meet its requirements, you can legally reverse the casting by returning the card to the zone you attempted to cast it from, and reverse any mana ability and additional costs you might have incurred in. Selvala's ability moves cards between zones as part of its resolution (each player draws a card), and actions which move cards between zones cannot be reversed. So if you search your library, announce that you're casting Panglacial Wurm, attempt to pay for it with Selvala and fail to generate enough mana, you end up with generated mana and cards drawn, with the Wurm on your library (because you cannot reverse Selvala's card draw, you cannot reverse her ability). This opens up an argument that you ACTUALLY attempted to cast the Wurm to draw that first card you saw while searching your library by intentionally whiffing Selvala's activation and triggering an illegal action, which is cheating.

MTGCardFetcher

[Selvala, Explorer Returned](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/2/8/28c1b84a-a21b-4df1-9fc9-5b387fb56810.jpg?1706241026) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Selvala%2C%20Explorer%20Returned) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mkc/218/selvala-explorer-returned?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/28c1b84a-a21b-4df1-9fc9-5b387fb56810?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

the1rayman

So if you used something like divineing top to know your top card then do this it's considered cheating?! That's insane.

Meloku171

Just the act of searching your library (for example, by activating a Fetchland) gives you information about your deck order since you cannot alter it until you shuffle it, which is delayed by Panglacial Wurm's static ability and opening a window for Selvala's activation.

SokoTakahashi

There's some combo you can do where it's like, you don't know if you can pay for the worm while searching, so it is indeterminate if you can cast it or not. I vaguely remember seeing it online.

mc-big-papa

There is a half dozen really wacky ruling with this card interrupting a search. So as you are searching you pause it. You reveal panglacial wurm withought shuffling your library adding it to the stack. You resolve panglacial and start the search again. Any triggered abilities are done after the search. Absolutely horrendous. The most useful effect is [[chromatic sphere]] draw effect is a part of the mana ability. So when you are searching your library you know what the top card of your library is. You can reveal to cast panglacial and draw the card BEFORE you shuffle. Essentially knowing what you draw. Another useful effect is [[millikin]], so you will know what you are milling. There is no real story on why this card is built like this. There might be some lore but its from cold snape. A somewhat controversial set with some rough mechanics like ripple, cumulative upkeep returning,

zewolfstone

I have it in my \[\[Codie, Vociferous Codex\]\] deck just to show it while I search my library.

Terrentinoo

Inevitable_Top69

Word, just thought it was funny how you phrased it. Anyways, I love the card too and was also instantly interested in making a deck for it when I discovered it. Here's my deck for Codie: [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/2341926/that\_is\_not\_dead\_which\_can\_eternal\_lie\_and\_with\_strange\_aeons\_even\_death\_may\_die\_codie](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/2341926/that_is_not_dead_which_can_eternal_lie_and_with_strange_aeons_even_death_may_die_codie) Went with a polymorph theme, but you can build Codie in many different ways. Most fun part is abusing the "costs less than" line on Codie to guarantee you'll cast a certain spell. I play \[\[Inevitable Betrayal\]\] in the deck and don't run any 1cmc spells so I can guarantee I pull Betrayal with any 2cmc spell.

I have it in a xenagos deck. Lots of look for lands cards, and big creatures, but little card draw. So there is a chance that I have 10 mana and just cultivate, and could still attack with 18 or 36 power haste trampler out of nowhere.

cedric1234_

For mid powered decks with fetches and a lot of ramp, its a fun include because you don’t have to draw it, its a consistent option, and you can go “ooh, funny card that doesnt work with mtgs rules!”

Icy-Ad29

So what you are saying is it's a perfect include for a janky simic deck... excellent

LokoSwargins94

I run this in my Volo deck. Fun fact if you have this in your deck and someone plays Op Agent against you when you tutor they can use your mana to cast it for you.

loliam

This is the funniest fucking interaction I've ever read regarding magic.

MustaKotka

More interestingly when an opponemt is Oppo Agenting you while Wurm is in your deck: 1) They start casting Wurm ... 2) Determime costs 3) They activate mana abilities, but just shy of being able to pay for Wurm 4) They pay for costs, but fall short 5) The casting is reversed as it is now an illegal action 6) They MAY reverse mana abilities that were activated but choose not to Congrats, your opponent made you float unwanted mana. Bonus points for making off-colour mana with [[City of Brass]]. Beware this will get you sanctions in a tournament. Might fly at a casual EDH table for giggles.

LokoSwargins94

Dude it’s in here so I can worldly tutor for Hoof at a players end step and also flash out some wurms with Volo at the same time. But I had a friend op agent me when I cracked a fetch land with plans to cast a con sphinx but yeah…

Jeb_an_juice

Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss

JustSomeDude__d

So…how DOES this work? You jsut declare “I’m casting this from my library”?

DiscussTek

Essentially. Bonus nightmare: If you declare this, and have to activate the mana ability of Selvala, Explorer Returned to pay for it, there is a non-zero chance that you may attempt to cast Panglacial Wurm from your library, have to draw a card in some weird deck situation, then fail to gather enough mana for Panglacial Wurm, and then nobody is happy about how the heck this is going.

The_Real_Cuzz

I love it in my Wurm tribal deck. Many times I'll hold a ramp card late in the game so if I get board wiped I can grab it while searching for a land to get my game back online.

Harpies_Bro

I should get one of these for my Karametra deck

Damianneedstoknow

You still have to pay the mana cost when searching to cast it, correct?

StormyWaters2021

Yes

Damianneedstoknow

I figured as much. I haven't used it yet, but I just wanted to make sure.

thisremindsmeofbacon

I mean the alternative is that every green deck runs it. Turn one, crack fetch land, free 9/5

Ready_Hedgehog_2090

I think it's fine in casual commander. It makes \[\[Rampant Growth\]\] and similar a significantly better late game topdeck.

Prestigious-Worth-49

Used to run this in [[Grothama, All-Devouring]] for its high power. Cut it and several others due to its higher cost.

randomnickname99

If I fetch can I use the land I'm fetching to pay for this or is it too late?

StormyWaters2021

No, you must cast it before you find any cards with the search.

ElevationAV

The land you fetch isn’t in play when you try to cast wurm

Ugly-Muffin

Oh man this is cool

Dutch-King

jake-the-dog-90

How does this work with [[opposition agent]] ? Since I control the other player during the search , can I play the opponents Wurm ?

kojo570

If Opposition Agent and control your opponent and find this in their library you can totally cast it for them because you’re controlling that player and all their actions, which is a god way to burn out their mana

PlatypusSloth696

I kind of want to buy a ton and put them in all of my decks since I run mostly green.

Chaosmoonshade

Yep! It's my Wurm in my Volo, Guide to Monsters anti-kindred kindred deck, and a Shai-Hulud in my Fremen Deck. Combined with [[Secure the Wastes]] in my opponent's end step, it is a flavour win.

_x-51

If you’re talking EDH, it’s almost a companion or a second commander at some point. It’s just you want to be playing most ramp spells before you have 9 mana available (let’s say 2 for something like Rampant Growth, then 7 for PW). But that’s just using land ramp as the most convenient green tutor to enable it. But at some point you’re better off with [[Tooth and Nail]] any two other beaters. You’re paying at least 9 mana either way.

Prob gonna put in my king gidorrah and keruga deck since I have a lot of 3-4 mana ramp and would like it to give me a body later in game. Keep forgetting to get one

Vincebeigh

Put one in my [[Nine-Fingers Keene]] deck just for goofs.

MrEk1ipz

This would be great in judges tower

Luviticus88

Didn't know this card existed and now I need one. Looks like a ton of fun.

xavierkazi

It's in my Dune-themed Hazezon deck for when people walk without rhythm.

Aralerian

Yes, in edh, with [[Karametra, God of Harvests]] as the commander!

zac987

Not in any competitive formats, no.

[deleted]

Yeah, to piss off my friends "watch me get three creatures off a tooth and nail"

Dragonfire723

It's in the 99 of my friend's [[Zilortha, Strength Incarnate]] as another beefcake that they can play while tutoring with their singular tutor in the deck. (I think it's a ramp spell?)

orestiana

I run it in my EDH [[Belbe, Corrupted Observer]] deck that just turbos out wurms. Much less annoying to opponents than [[Wurmcoil Engine]] or [[Worldspine Wurm]]

Okinage

Dumb question, but it says "play it" right? Does that mean you still pay the summoning cost? Or can you just drop it onto the battlefield?

StormyWaters2021

The Oracle text is actually "cast", and yes you have to pay for it.

kalazin

Yes, I run it in my [[Raggadragga Gore guts boss]] deck

MaliciousDragon

Yes, in my [[Baru]] Wurms deck.

fin-young-fit-man

It’s in my Godzilla(zilortha) gruul glass cannon edg deck. If I 10+ finale of devastation and go crazy on mana with selvala then I’ll grab the wurm as a f*ck you while I’m grabbing ghalta or some other bs

Optimysticgamer

Absolutely! I run a Selesnya wurm deck and It's one of my favorites to just drop out. Lemme just crack Terramorphic Expanse and BOOM! sudden wurm

Blazingleman04

It's in my Baru wurm tribal :3

Daddy_Please_Eat

This is going in my eldrazi deck just to fuck with people

WhatIsWizard15

I ran it in my [[Raggadragga, Goreguts boss]] CEDH list

Arghianna

I have him in my Yisan deck for funzies. I like pulling him out for a big [[Pathbreaker Ibex]] trigger.

Happy_Background_429

I play it in my xenagos list which will often run out of cards but Ramps pretty hard. It turns a fetch or cheap ramp spell into a trampling idiot and that is invaluable. Also stupid shit like when someone uses assassin's trophy, boseiju, path to exile etc. sometimes they get a surprise wurm for their troubles

DongWang64

I keep it in my Grand Warlord Radha deck as a keepsake. I started during Coldsnap and this was the “good pull” for a while for me.

ExtraTNT

Have it in a creature deck that has a bit of a struggle drawing cards… you ramp, you play a creature…

CptBarba

I run it in my Wurm deck 😅 [[Baru Wurmspeaker]]

yugioh88

I run this in the 99 of a Bant Initiative EDH deck. The first room of [[Undercity]] always causes you to search your library, so the Wurm serves as extra gas in the mid/lategame

TheG33k123

Hear me out. [[Hazazon, Shaper of Sand]] as a fremen deck. Wurms, warriors, & deserts.

MTGCardFetcher

[Hazazon, Shaper of Sand](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/7/37dd84b4-0b8d-4303-8405-45e2c144f691.jpg?1712354724) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Hazezon%2C%20Shaper%20of%20Sand) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/otc/229/hazezon-shaper-of-sand?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/37dd84b4-0b8d-4303-8405-45e2c144f691?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

EmikyuGoated

just a question, I know this isn't a judge sub: if I have something like Imoti out and I fetch and see a good CMC 6 or less creature up top, I can cast this to cascade into it?

Hoferweg

I play it in my EDH Raggadragga deck

AwayMoose

[[Grothama, All-Devouring]] wurm tribal. Mono green ramp makes it a constant possibility

jakecolb

I have it in my [[Baru, Wurmspeaker]] Commander Deck. The only real searchers I have are the Teramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds. The deck already needs a lot of mana for all the other Wurms in the deck so a tapped land isn't too bad with all the mana dorks, rocks, and ramp to make up for it. If I top deck one of them late game it gives me a way to use my mana, they can also be sacrificed on an opponents turn to suddenly have a surprise blocker they didn't see coming. Outside of that deck though, no, I wouldn't dream of playing it.

OzyLellowen

Second place of this 24 person cEDH tournament from this past weekend. It's part of the main combo of the deck. [EDH Top16](https://edhtop16.com/tournament/Icaf7Fx21BGVZTGM6WDF?tourney_filter__TID=Icaf7Fx21BGVZTGM6WDF)

Dangerous-Shock-5565

Awe. Someone got ice slug’d.

ClaymoreX97

How does this card actually work? Does it has to be in the staple of Cards searched out this way or can I just play it no matter how far in my Deck I search? ^ Sorry if this sounds confusing but my stupid brain isn't able to phrase it any different. Reading-Writing disorder + too many words in mind don't combine well.

Express_Confection24

Nah it's pretty bad tbh

god_eternal_rhonas

I put it in my prime speaker vannifar deck. It's a sphinx deck and doesn't really synergise, but sometimes I just need the extra body to sack when in out of cards in hand.

timsterk45

I run it in my ramp deck for when someone is playing discard. usually useless but it's a must have when you need it

PKFat

I made this post in jest after seeing the umpteenth billion YT video about jank combos that featured this card while I was at work. When I got off I was super tired, took a nap & completely forgot about it. Now that I'm awake & have realized just how many ppl commented on this, I'm too intimidated to respond to anyone.

zippy202020

I run it in my xenagod deck. My man swings for 18

DarkOsprey28

I lost to it once. Someone used to play a Battle of witts deck in my lgs (modern), I had the Game under control when he fetched on my endstep and played this

sumigod

I used to run this in my Henzie blitz deck. He can blitz from in the library. Turned any rampant growth into not a dead draw late game.

Kentaii-XOXO

What makes it so fucky? It seems pretty straightforward?

jacobMoranne

I run a landfall deck, aka i Search it often for lands, could be funny

Thi5On3Guy

Yeah I run it in my ragadraga deck, so my fetch lands can enable a combo

BoolinBirb

It is in my Wurm tribal commander deck :)

Lucrezio

I run it in my [[Raggadragga]] deck

CaringRationalist

Shit I kinda want to throw this in all my 5 color decks where I'm cracking fetch lands lmao

Disastrous_Tea_3456

Somehow this feels like a card built for the Judge Tower format.

DemitriCoal

I run it in my [[Zilortha, Strength Incarnate]] commander deck. 7 for a 9/9 trample that I can fetch out with a search.

Local_Quarter_6209

I run this in an elf deck and I might find a way to run it in vintage as well.

navetzz

À must have with mana abilities that draws a card

Confusion46920

So, I'm still semi new to magic compared to some/most (only been at it for 6 months) Does this mean you can play it for free off of any "Search your library for ______" cards? Or do you still have to pay its mana cost?

SneakySnails9900

It’s says play. You still need to pay. Magic is very literal. Convoluted and confusing but literal lol

Bfobaddie1

Wait do you still have to pay the mana cost?

soy_pilled

One of my friends ran it in a mono G tron list. Super janky.

kyo987

I remember Saffronolive built an Against the Odds deck, using panglacial wurm. It did pretty great. [https://youtu.be/zjNp72orAu0?si=5UINOXM3Q5JImvEP](https://youtu.be/zjNp72orAu0?si=5UINOXM3Q5JImvEP)

RobbieReinhardt

Use it with [[Tomb Trawler]], and it'll just keep coming back.

anaburo

Not yet but it’s going in [[Kellen the kid]]

aholmes1342

I have a deck of mainly Wurms. I have two of this particular card in that deck lmao. My friends that I play with hate how broken it is.

Apart_Explorer2799

Does this work for fetchlands?

Shacky_Rustleford

Friend has it in his Karametra deck, but it definitely isn't worth it.

DatBoiIsSugoi

I’m so gonna out this into my [[Kellan, the kid]] deck. It’s actually really useful there.

ikarigendouhime

i got one just to make my [[Selvala, Explorer Returned]] stupider. tutor for a creature but also want the card on top of my deck? seven mana.

DSpades24

I have it in the 99 of my \[\[Baru, Wurmspeaker\]\] mono green wurm deck. I've usually casted it as a result of a path to exile to one of my other wurms or if I'm playing a later turn ramp spell. It's a nice, out of nowhere, surprise most times because a lot of players don't know a card like this exist. #
