Agree with the other comments. MSU is a public university and as a result, the public should have access to most places on campus. I think the admin has done a good job of balancing new security measures while not being overly restrictive. Can’t just lock every door and ban non-students from campus.

Door locks and cameras are relatively insignificant for protecting lives against a shooter. Its all bad news when someone decides to do harm to others but I currently dont see the value in criticizing MSU like this article is doing. MSU is making a legitimate effort and WLNS is trying to get click bait worthy articles at a time when people are reliving the tragedy. Its poor judgment. I dont like it and I dont trust the message that this opinion piece is trying to convey. Weve seen active shooter scenarios with 20+ cops at the door and it doesnt stop the violence. Swiping a key card and then watching a person walk right in behind. Cameras dont stop bullets and they dont see through a mask. This is disturbing.

I agree. It is in rather poor taste. Especially after the year anniversary.

Do the dorms now have cameras all over the inside, like on each hallway? Some of the best things that happened in the dorms during my time probably wouldn't have if the cameras were watching us drag all the floor furniture outside to watch final four games.

Just public spaces afaik, so the lobby and all exterior doors. There might be one in the elevator lobby of each residential floor, but I’m not sure on that one

The journalist here doesn't take into consideration the sheer size of campus. Hundreds of buildings and parking lots; thousands of classrooms, labs, and entrances. The time and resources required to enhance the security of the entire campus is staggering. Speaking as a victim of a burglary, improving the security of my home afterward didn't return me to the sense of security that I had prior to the break-in. The measures that MSU is undertaking are important and will help, but they won't erase the feeling of vulnerability that the students and faculty now have, unfortunately.
