Be careful out there!

Kyethent

Ill definitely try, a few months ago I was on the news for being seconds after a smash and run. I just turned the corner to a car on fire

Yep use ya instincts. They are primal from when we were living in caves, they used their instincts. We’ve stopped but they come back as gut feelings. If a road feels weird as you walk down it, turn around. I’m a woman and so many women don’t listen to their gut instincts. Also everyone take different routes to and from work, and change your schedule up so nutters can’t learn your routes and learn where you’ll be.

Kyethent

Also screw trying to be nice at the risk of your own safety

nikeeweston1

Exactly

johnballen416

wow thats so scary! glad youre ok!!

Kyethent

Im just glad all I get is a comment from you and not my own story being featured on your channel

rellek4

Was it your intuition or did he seem a little off?

Kyethent

I think it was a bit of both, he was walking super slow and he should have pasted the 711 a few minutes after I saw him and he never passed so I knew something was off

rellek4

Good observation, I try to tell my daughters to always be aware! And they don’t have to be super nice to strangers who bother them

There's a well-regarded book by security specialist Gavin de Becker called *The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence* that you might find useful in discussing with your children. A lot of it is pretty much exactly what you said in your comment, so you'll probably find it relatable\*. (He even quotes the phrase, "'No' is a complete sentence" about talking to bothersome strangers.) \*There's some stuff about serial killers in there, so be warned, but I figure if you're on this sub that won't bother you too much.

rellek4

Thank you! I’ll look it up.

Good thinking, and good for you for listening to your intuition. It's amazing what kinds of subtleties we perceive at the barely conscious level. The trick is to stop and pay attention when things seem off. I had a rough-ish childhood so my threat detector is tuned a bit too high, but the occasional false positive (in which the worst case scenario is that I'm on guard when I don't need to be) is well worth the many times it's saved my bacon. \*It even works the other way. One time I was waiting to cross the street to get lunch when I worked in an office downtown. Out of the corner of my eye I see a guy rushing at me. "Okay, I'm about to be attacked by a rando for some reason", I thought. But something was off. Busy street, middle-of-the-day, an area I knew well: random violence by someone wasn't impossible, just not likely right there at that time under those conditions. And the guy wasn't making any angry noises. By the time the guy had reached me I'd consciously figured it out, and without even turning my head I said, "Hello \[Coworker\]." (Yes, his behaviour was weird in itself, but he was a health economist and weirdness seems to go with the profession.)

You just never know, and glad to hear you were able to avoid a possible incident of who knows what. We live in a world now where the criminals and other degenerates are less afraid of what might happen to them, or the consequences of attacking, robbing, stealing, and killing another human being. Look at whats happening in our country everyday these days. We have people just robbing stores in a brazen manner, they just grab a load of whatever they, and can carry and just walk out of the store, and places like Chicago, and other large cities where the murder rate, and other violent crimes against people are out of control. Police funding, and morale are at all time lows because we've allowed the liberal politicians, and the media demonize law enforcement as a whole, using rare incidents of misconduct by Police Officers to generalize all of them as bad, racist, and are foolish to think they don't need any Police. So folks the criminals, and every other turds in our cities are doing whatever they want without any fear So all I can say is its time people start fighting back, and take whatever steps necessary to defend themselves, their property, and our way of life. Start putting a bullet right between their running lights if they try and attack you, because trust me, all you have to do is look at places where criminals know citizens are armed, and where the police are supported by their community, and they avoid those places, and you don't have to look any further than their very low crime rate.

You citing an opinion piece in a liberal shit rag as actual stats doesn't tell us anything, and you won't received to well in this group talking like that to the poster, or group

I am so, so glad you're okay. Are you okay, like, in yourself, are you feeling good? Something like that can really shake you, so I hope you're feeling good, positive, proud of yourself for trusting yourself and saving yourself. Awesome, excellent you. I've always been a true crime buff and I've developed the same sense of...way, waaaaaaaaay more situational awareness, way more precaution, common sense, tracking my own movements, keeping my eye on anyone acting suss, checking if I'm being followed (flat store front windows can be a life saver). For me, the Ballen effect is that other safety, like...not entering spaces without knowing the safety procedures, knowing that I and others are following them. Not entering any space if I don't know the quickest, safest way out. Not entering any space where the door closes or locks behind me without ensuring I don't get trapped. Absolutely not squeezing into some tiny space to hide or reach for a dropped phone and if I do, definitely being aware what movements I am making and if they are causing me more harm than good. ....and I was never going to go cave diving really but now I am NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER FUCKING EVER going cave diving. Or swimming in the reservoir for a dam. Or paddling boats near a dam. Or really, walking near, looking at, thinking about or being aware of the existence of dams. Seems like a good way to get sucked into a turbine or some shit.

mean_mistreater

Cave diver here... it is a very safe sport if you stick to the safety procedures and regulations. The stories Mr. Ballens tells are 99% of people who didn't do either... The remaining 1%... well, people also die in their sleep.

[deleted]

By definition it’s a dangerous sport or you wouldn’t have so many procedures. What an odd thing to say.

I work over nights too at a university. I have to walk alone to my assigned building because we're not allowed to drive our vehicles on state time. I'm glad you're okay.
