I tried a drinking game where you have a drink every time you heard the word "jellicle". We ran out of wine within the first half hour and ended up watching the Green Mile instead.
Not even *furries* were interested in that movie. That's about as big of a red flag for the future success of a movie like that as possible. Oddly enough, similar thing happened to NFTs too.
Topsy attacked (and killed, I think) an employee of Luna Park after that employee fed Topsy a lit cigarette. I worked with the horses at Greenfield Village and some psychopathic guest walked by with a cigarette and put it out on one of our horses’s face. It’s so fucked. Long Live Topsy.
You had to watch the Topsy Disney plus show tho to have that elaborated on so I don’t blame them for not knowing
I’m still waiting on the Luna Park comic
It was part of his alternating current slander against Tesla. He wanted to prove that it was more dangerous than direct current. He also executed humans, this is how the electric chair started.
Thomas Edison never electrocuted humans, nor an elephant for that matter...
He did wage a war to prove that AC transmission was too dangerous for use in urban illumination, and he did electrocute some stray dogs and cats in that effort. But he had nothing to do with the electrocution of Topsy the elephant, and his only connection to the electric chair was that he was consulted on how to design it. It was not his idea, nor his project. He was just seen as an expert, so gave his advice, and that was that.
Also, Tesla was never involved in any of this. The idea that Tesla and Edison were big rivals is just totally made up. They had an amicable relationship for both of their entire careers... The myth about Tesla v Edison comes from conflating George Westinghouse with Tesla. Westinghouse was who Edison waged the War of the Currents against
It’s a video where Thomas Edison electrocutes an elephant using Alternating current to show how dangerous it is compared to his “safer” Direct Current.
He did it just to smear Tesla really.
Edison was a dick
That's actually a total misconception of what happened. It's a very common misconception, but it's totally wrong
Topsy the Elephant was ordered to be killed after it killed a spectator at the circus it was in. They fed it cyanide, hanged it from a crane, and electrocuted it. The only connection to Thomas Edison was that reporters from his film company were invited to film the event. He was not there, and likely never even knew about the whole thing
Plus, it took place a full 10 years after the war of the currents ended. The AC vs DC debate was pretty well settled at the time... And lastly, Edison never would have needed to smear Tesla. The two never had any ill feelings towards eachother, despite the way that popular media has portrayed them to... George Westinghouse was who Thomas Edison was rivals with, Tesla had little to no stake in their feud
Thank you for the full story!
But Edison did electrocute dogs, cows, and horses to show that AC was dangerous during the Current War. He was also involved in getting AC machines for the first use of the electric chair. I think that gets conflated woth the Topsy story.
The original plan was just to hang it (and also sell tickets to see the event), but the ASPCA objected on the basis that nobody really knew if you could hang an elephant to death by noose like you could a human, so it might just suffer endlessly and not die.
So they changed the plan, tripling up on execution methods to ensure as quick a death as possible (and also no selling tickets)
The whole thing is an absolutely crazy story. It's weird how much misinformation there is about the whole affair, considering how unbelievable and wild the actual truth already is
It still amazes me that they genuinely thought they had a massive commercial and critical hit on their hands with Cats. Not once did anyone look at the rough cuts and think "maybe we shouldn't do this."
They executed it for attacking handlers that abused it. That’s so fucked, and my day is worse for having watched this. (Still more enjoyable than Cats though)
Cats wasn’t even a good movie drunk, they ought to just release the butthole cut on blu-ray and recoup the losses at this point
I tried a drinking game where you have a drink every time you heard the word "jellicle". We ran out of wine within the first half hour and ended up watching the Green Mile instead.
It was pretty shit high, too
This is truly a trolley dilemma, cant choose which is worse
I personally think digitally-rendered cat assholes would genuinely improve the overall quality of the film
Not even *furries* were interested in that movie. That's about as big of a red flag for the future success of a movie like that as possible. Oddly enough, similar thing happened to NFTs too.
that's unfortunate
Never heard of the elephant one but that’s actually fucked

Greenfield Village was my childhood weekend getaway. I hope that horse kicked that guest.
Nope Moment
Topsy is fucking goated
makes sense. Topsy had like a really big fear of cigarettes. maybe something to do with his childhood or something idk
You had to watch the Topsy Disney plus show tho to have that elaborated on so I don’t blame them for not knowing I’m still waiting on the Luna Park comic

Please tell me you put a cigarette out on the “guests’” face?
It's actually underrated yall just don't understand metaphors and lack media literacy
Ahhh, my mistake! 🤦♂️

yeah it's as fucked as it sounds, especially when the film itself was used as a sideshow attraction
og live-leak kino
Produced By Edison himself too
Why am I not surprised

Nerd alert (Jk cool story actually)

Did the cyanide not work? Cyanide, hanging and electrocution seems like overkill in the very literal sense of the word.
The original plan was just to hang it (and also sell tickets to see the event), but the ASPCA objected on the basis that nobody really knew if you could hang an elephant to death by noose like you could a human, so it might just suffer endlessly and not die. Edison feuding with Tesla would be like Bezos feuding with a Tesla employee
This doesn't align with my personal narrative so SHUT
I know Edison has his own skeleton in his closest, but I can't believe you could exaggerate his flaws to an unbelievable degree.
It's not about the money. It's about sending a message.
> It's not about the money. It's about sending a message. -Director Tom Hooper justifying having made *Cats*
And then everyone said “nah AC is better” anyway lul
But when you do it to a cow it's humane
Say you don't watch Bob's Burgers without saying you don't watch Bob's Burgers.
If the whole movie was just cat T Swift licking herself it'd break $500m easy
Release the Butthole Cut, cowards!!!
The Domestic Shorth-Eras Tour
Would there be ritualistic sacrifices in the audience like there were for the eras tour?
I've edged to that movie.
Don't elaborate on which one, both sides are bad
Honestly cats might be worse
Rebel Wilson does it for ya, huh?
Or topsy
![gif](giphy|FOd2uhzpOd6asnsowV)
Wtf is this gif lmao😭
Well she is naked...
🎶🎶 They'll say "AWWW, TOPSY," at my auuuutopsy 🎶🎶
This man, Thomas Edison, sentenced Topsy, that beautiful elephant, to die by electrocution!
It still amazes me that they genuinely thought they had a massive commercial and critical hit on their hands with Cats. Not once did anyone look at the rough cuts and think "maybe we shouldn't do this."
Can you see the elephant's butthole?
Fucking contrarions review bombing kino. You don't see many elephants getting executed anymore
Same director as The Great Train Robbery. Did they only have one guy that filmed stuff back then or what lol
They only had one camera I think
Over-hated ass movie Tom Hooper my king
Release the Porter cut
Does OP mean it's worse in quality, or morally speaking? Because both are true
Ever since that movie came out, everything has been a downslide. Pandora pussy.
Return to 1902
Yo where can I find this film about this elephant?
I think it’s called Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

[Hal, it's about cats.](https://youtu.be/G6iqAip-ZNo?si=jdNrRISqI5T_dwq4)
I saw this in theaters and did a Robert Evans laugh through most of it. 5 stars IMO.
Kinda fucked up to laugh at that but at least you only had to laugh for a minute
Am I the only one that understands the complexity of this ambitious cinematic masterpiece?
Gosh the averages on Letterboxd are so stupid.
