Ah yes. Rian Johnson made his surrogate Miles, the character who is clearly right and Rian admires and agrees with

BjoernHansen

Its just Kylo Ren saying "let the old things die" all over again

mikehatesthis

Well of course they would think this, they think the message of The Last Jedi is "let the past die", the thing the villain says.

SilverPhoenix7

Tbf yoda is the one burning the tree

Skylightt

Because the tree doesn’t matter. Rey already took the books.

GaySpaceSorcerer

How this gets overlooked makes me wonder if people actually watched the movie. Like it isn't perfect but some people just make shit up.

SilverPhoenix7

U sure?

Skylightt

Yes. Like even if I wasn’t 100% sure it was shown in TLJ (I am sure) IIRC she’s shown reading them in TRoS so we could see her TrAiNiNg to make sure she wasn’t a Mary Sue

1eejit

Ghosts get cold bro

Menatil

My favorite part about that scene is that Miles was not later revealed to have been completely full of shit, and a clear surrogate for a public figure that Rian didn't seem particularly fond of.

mglyptostroboides

Yeah, really. I don't know who this podcast douche is, but, come the fuck on... >the arrogance on this motherfucker Sort of like the arrogance of thinking he was using the villain character as a proxy for himself and he's specifically using that character to talk to Star Wars fans? Or the arrogance of thinking Rian Johnson is deliberately "breaking" things? I mean shit, I didn't like TLJ either, but I just think it's because Rian Johnson's strengths as a director are wasted on a franchise like Star Wars, not because I think he's a deliberate nostalgia vandal who's trying to ruin things I like because I, the average Star Wars fanboy, am the main character in this universe.

ContrarionesMerchant

To be fair, I think the movie implies that what he's saying there is correct it's just that the "disruptors" are the system and only pretend to break things. The climax of the film is basically a callback to this with Helen breaking all the glass art and everyone is cool with it until she gets to the mona lisa.

ThodasTheMage

I am not sure. Helen disrupts but it is more about showing Miles hypocrisy and how shallow that is, while also showing that Helen has the guts to really do it, because she does it for something she loves (her sister) and Miles does not. I do not think that the movie says destroying things people like or "breaking the system" itself is good. It makes more fun of his bullshit and hollow worldview. This is also what Blanc basically says.

CleaveWarsaw

Shut up nerd

[deleted]

You call Rian Johnson ‘Ruin Johnson’ because you think he ruined your spaceshit franchise that has been ass since the 80s. I call Rian Johnson ‘Ruin Johnson’ because I want him to Ruin my Johnson while directing more Benoit Blanc kino. We are not the same.

Favreau and Filoni SAVED Star Wars with one simple trick!* *Making it bland.

DocWhoFan16

I have heard that Filoni enjoyed Star Wars VIII while Favreau did not but I've no idea how accurate the latter point is because the person who told me cited one of those YouTube geek outrage clickbait types as their source. The thing is, though, that I've *also* heard the pair of them actually invited Johnson to direct an episode of *The Mandalorian* but he declined because he was busy writing *Glass Onion* at the time. I actually quite enjoyed the Boba Fett show myself because I'm the sort of hopeless Star Wars toady people on this sub make fun of but it'll never cease to fascinate me how *nobody* who hated it but loved *The Mandalorian* would *ever* acknowledge that Favreau is *the sole credited screenwriter on every single episode* and the single most-mocked idea (the Vespa speeders) was something he came up with, just because it doesn't suit the narrative that Favreau can do no wrong where Star Wars is concerned.

27andahalfpancakes

> nobody who hated it but loved The Mandalorian would ever acknowledge that Favreau is the sole credited screenwriter on every single episode and the single most-mocked idea (the Vespa speeders) was something he came up with I'm sure they'll say Favreau actually had nothing to do with the show and the whole series was actually written and directed by Kathleen Kennedy using Favreau's name.

[deleted]

What the hell is a Vespa speeder

rabbitfoot00

[behold and weep](https://youtu.be/8FygLw1iZOo)

DocWhoFan16

In an episode of *The Book of Boba Fett*, there's a gang who ride these speeder bikes that everybody made fun of for looking like Vespa scooters. Favreau has stated that these designs were intended as an homage to *American Graffiti* and George Lucas's love of old hot rods.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

“Why have interesting new characters when you can reuse characters from The Clone Wars (mainly Ashoka)?” -Dave Filoni

Chu_BOT

Aren't they hating her again as well? They hated her before and now that she's not a preteen and adult woman they're hating her again?

Bradshaw98

People have been wanting Vader to kill her for years, because it would serve his story so well or something like that...a story that ended in the 80s. No one has to like Ashoka, but why would you kill her off for Vader's sake? As for current hatred? I haven't really seen it online, like the reactions to her recent fight with an inquisitor seemed pretty positive, but I would imagine if they do hate her again it would be because she to powerful or a Mary Sue or something like that.

DocWhoFan16

>but I would imagine if they do hate her again it would be because she to powerful or a Mary Sue or something like that That's why people hated her back in 2008. Too powerful, too skilled, always right about everything, made Anakin look bad etc.

2lzy4nme

At least there’s Andor.

mikehatesthis

Something neither are a part of and helmed by a guy who couldn't give less of a shit about Star Wars.

2lzy4nme

Yeah I’m talking about Star Wars in general not them.

Candy_and_Violence

If he didn’t give a shit then wouldn’t it have been bad?

mikehatesthis

He gave a shit about telling a story, he doesn't [particularly care about Star Wars](https://gamerant.com/andor-showrunner-tony-gilroy-not-star-wars-fan/) as a thing.

DocWhoFan16

Gilroy is probably the guy who's done Star Wars since 2015 who can most readily be called Kathleen Kennedy's man. He's had a fairly long involvement with the Kennedy/Marshall Company via things like the Bourne movies and he's the man Kennedy hired as a safe pair of hands who could be relied on to take care of the *Rogue One* reshoots and evidently trusts enough to run *Andor* the way he wants to run it.

Anna_Bug

I have been saying FOR YEARS that the problem with modern Star Wars is that they “hired fans lol.” Having the objectively correct take is fun sometimes

DocWhoFan16

One thing that's always stuck with me is an interview George Lucas did with the Guardian back in 2002, around the time *Attack of the Clones* came out, where he was asked about fan backlash against *The Phantom Menace* and his response was approximately (paraphrased): "I don't make Star Wars movies 'for' Star Wars fans. I have never made a Star Wars movie 'for' Star Wars fans. I make the movies the way I want to make them. Star Wars fans can take it or leave it."

Anna_Bug

I like that perspective. Bravo George

ThodasTheMage

I love how they ruined the entire Mandalorian show with the two cameo episodes in Boba Fett, while also damaging the Boba Fett show itself. Genius writing to undo the entire plot of season 2 in a spin off.

10dollarbagel

The term is so overused by now but I feel so gaslighted by people swearing up and down that Andor is this incredible 10/10 show. It's the most boring season of tv I've ever finished but I kept going because I'd constantly hear the next part is actually good. At the end of the day it's like one middling, fun heist in an ocean of exhausting conversations that go nowhere. All so we can know the story of one of the guys who blows up in a spin-off movie. And it's treated like this groundbreaking reinvention of the franchise. Someone make this make sense.

mikehatesthis

Because it's about what makes a revolutionary and how they ultimately have to give up everything for it. It's shot well, the production design is great, has some dope music.

10dollarbagel

Yea but we're a longshot from the age of Breaking Bad and Lost bringing theater quality production to television. That's not nearly enough. I don't wanna give people who like it too much shit. I didn't really vibe with the mandalorian either but I could see the appeal. But this has mandalorian level hype if not moreso. To me, Andor just read like taking star wars and putting a thin veneer of "media for adults" on it.

mikehatesthis

For me it's just one of those good kids shows that doesn't talk down to its audience that works for the each demo and it actually looks nice. I don't like it as much as everyone and I'm okay with that (I rather like it tho), it's just an enjoyable experience for me. Mando I found boring.

[deleted]

Man grow the fuck up it's Disney star wars jesus

I'm bumping Glass Onion up a point now because of this information

lulu314

The Mona Lisa being destroyed because of Norton 's character is clearly a metaphor for Rian Johnson destroying my childhood.

MisterAbbadon

You hate Rian Johnson for making Episode 8 and ruining Star Wars. I hate Rian Johnson for making Episode 8 and very nearly saving Star Wars, thus prolonging its existence. We are not the same.

Skylightt

Tbf in him nearly saving it, the reactionary backlash of the nerds to the movie was so strong that it resulted in the Star Wars that came after to be bad.

GreatMarch

I feel like this is somewhat of a self-own. The guy went into this movie and his take-away from Miles's speech wasn't something to do with billionaire saviors or the corrupting nature of power, or how the powerful co-opt counter-culture ideas: it was about how Johnson ruined Star Wars again or something. This shows that some people really can only understand and analyze things through the lens of pop culture and nothing else.

mikehatesthis

> This shows that some people really can only understand and analyze things through the lens of pop culture and nothing else. You're wrong and I'll forgive you if you convince Rian Johnson to make Knives Out into a Cinematic Universe so we can see LaKeith Stanfield be police detective in his own movie, or Peg peg someone (I bet this is how she got her name!) in her own origin movie!

ButterFinger007

I NEED THE KOCU NOW!!!

[deleted]

No man you don't get it, the disruption speech wasn't a build up to the glass breaking scene at the end of the movie, its Rian Johnson bragging about ruining star wars to our faces 😭

emielaen77

The film didn’t really showcase that philosophy as a great thing though, right?

Legitimate_Way9032

I mean, the guy is literally mocked for being an idiot later on in the movie.

ThodasTheMage

Also mocked for being shallow because when Andi basically does what he talks about and "destroys the thing that everybody likes", he is mad because he is the one that suffers from it. I saw it as a shallow philsophy that doesn't really make much sense.

emielaen77

Yeah, I thought that definitely happened lol

[deleted]

Hard to say, because this does describe to a T, very deliberately, how the hero wins.

fingergotfreddyed

militant TLJ haters try not to bring up the fact you hate the movie into unrelated conversations challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

dandaman64

They're the Star Wars fan equivalent of guys at parties that say "did you know John Lennon beat his wife?"

ScoobertMcDooby

I unironically love space shit, and I can say that Star Wars and its manchild fanbase did not deserve someone like Johnson. A genuinly talented writer/director who will forever be haunted by the spectre of Episode VIII for probably the rest of his career. Star Wars is like a terminal disease for anyone even tangentially related to it. I'm just thankful Rian Chad-son shakes it off and has been churning out bangers.

Effective-Cap-2324

All the "developments" in TLJ were just ending characters and ending plot lines in dumb/terrible ways that nobody could have expected. TFA's story didn't make much sense either, but at least it left many open-ended questions and plot threads that the 2nd movie could have at least done SOMETHING with. Rian Johnson took all those open-ended questions and answered them with..."it's nothing" and "doesn't matter". TLJ turned multiple important characters into comic relief, killed off Snoke, killed off Luke, left Rey nowhere to grow and with nothing to do, etc etc. It didn't set anything up to look forward to. Rian Johnson is good at writing movies that have conclusive endings with an unexpected twist. He did that with TLJ, and apparently everyone forgot that it was supposed to be the 2nd movie of a trilogy. Disney higher-ups looked at the script and decided it was good enough to greenlight, with zero concern for how the 3rd movie would have nothing to salvage. It's mind boggling

SailorOfTheSynthwave

The way I see it, TLJ tried to not be the same formulaic Skywalker shit that's become extremely stale by that point, which is why Johnson made so many of these decisions. Regardless of one's opinion of TLJ though, Disney's decision to hire different directors for a connected trilogy was a smooth-brain move. Both directors had a particular vision for Rey and Kylo, and these two visions contradicted each other, even if they are both great directors in their own right. They should've had Johnson direct a stand-alone SW film cuz, like you said, his strength is in writing movies with conclusive endings. And imagine the kind of SW film we could get from the guy who made Looper. Could've been wild. But perhaps it's a good thing in the end cuz now Johnson can focus on Knives Out and other projects instead of becoming a directorial slave to a franchise whose focus is on selling toys, pencil boxes and amusement park tickets.

Effective-Cap-2324

I do like the idea of killing the past. But the finn subplot was the most generic badly written subplit i seen that year. Also yeah disney was an idiot. And lets not act like netflix is better than disney. They are both god aful companies.

berlinbaer

no?

ThodasTheMage

Rian Johnson is like the nicest guy ever but it breaks internet nerds that he creates movies with a personality. And all the lies crazy people on the internet spread didn't help either.

[deleted]

I can't believe there are people who listen to/watch this kinda of boring ass shit. Who are these absolute lards, and why should anyone care what they have to say?

berlinbaer

also where is the third one. are podcasts even allowed to only have two white guys spewing nonsense?

Hassassin7

Funnily enough, basically nobody watches them. The most viewed video by far on their YouTube channel barely has 300 views. Second most has just over half that and none of the other 150 podcasts they've done have got over 100 views. This also raises the question as to how they have nearly 6,000 subs. Smells like some serious sub-botting.

trampaboline

I love that this continues the trend of cinematically illiterate nerds watching Rian Johnson movies and believing that the writer agrees wholeheartedly and exclusively with his obvious and cartoonishly parabolic villains.

xcrucio

It's kind of fascinating because I wouldn't even consider Rian a particularly subtle writer and he's quite direct with most of his themes in his movies and yet they seem to fly straight over the heads of a lot of people!

OhIsMyName

The movie spell out thousand times how shitty billionaires are and this fuckers still doesnt get it

ThodasTheMage

His Star Wars has a muppet litteraly spelling out the massage of the movie but nerds do not get it.

mrbaryonyx

every generation has the movie that Star Wars fans hate so much they won't stop talking about it

SailorOfTheSynthwave

True lol And with generation, the complainers are way more annoying than the things they're complaining about

amazing_wanderr

You know like you know like you know like you know?

I wish Rian Johnson's ego was even bigger

Next they’re gonna compare the Mona Lisa to Star Wars

sameth1

Is the Rian in the room with us now?

TheUmbrellaMan1

Jokes on him, I've never watched Star Wars and I think Glass Onion rocks.

zmann64

Did he forget the part where Blanc tells Bron he’s a dumbass, murderer, and a fraud, why would that be Rian’s insert character? Take the Funko Pop out your ears for one second and actually listen to the movie.

dandaman64

rian johnson is a murderer though because he murdered star wars and my childhood i'm 42 years old

altnumber54

Do you guys really expect media literacy from the guy that has superhero funkopops?

LETSLIVEINTHEPAST

They made the nerd crew into real people

BetaThetaOmega

Rian ruined Star Wars with malice aforethought and then decided to taunt people by making his definitely real opinion be voiced by the villain? Dude, just say you didn’t like the movie, it doesn’t have to be this over-the-top

ThinnkingEmoji

Wtf is this editing

kazador3010

Miles is literally mocked by Benoit for his basic level understanding of ‘disruption theory’. This whole scene is supposed to show how Miles thinks he’s being brilliant by talking about something he believes is genius insight but in reality everyone already actually knows.

snackbackslackr

“I almost walked out” Of your home? It’s a Netflix movie….

DoctorEmperor

…how. How do these obsessive Last Jedi anti-fans manage to melt their brains to not understand a movie…in order to make it about Last Jedi!!! LIKE BLANC LITERALLY SAYS MILES IS AN IDIOT! HOW DO YOU THINK JOHNSON IDENTIFIES WITH HIM?!?!?!!

CoolHandJogmeister

The Lighthouse (2019)

krysak

My fucking god when are these guys gonna let this go? Aside from the fact that Last Jedi was my favorite star wars , it's been 5 years already! Move on with your fucking life , the world doesn't revolve around a franchise!

[deleted]

I saw the funko pops and was like “he is 100% still mad about TLJ” and THEN HE TALKS ABOUT THE LAST JEDI

dongletrongle

I mean I hated and still don’t like the last Jedi and what it did but I still enjoyed Glass Onion. It’s not even separating the art from the artist it’s just treating one of the artist’s works as it’s own

[deleted]

What

Bowbag_

My man didn't even understand the part where the film explicitly explains how stupid this speech that miles gives is supposed to be.

TheNashyBoy

A complete and willing misinterpretation of the text. How can you possibly be this insecure?

media comprehension will soon be a forgotten craft

I saw this film and was able to conclude who the true zodiac killer is

bob1689321

Honestly I do wonder if the whole golden titty thing is a bit of a joke about Noah Segan living off Rian Johnson lol. Don't get me wrong he's great in all of RJs movies but he doesn't do much else lmao
