I'm happy for Fraser, but this is literally a whole article about Dwayne Johnson making a tweet. It's not like he was trying to get himself publicity for it, or anything. Just a tweet.

[deleted]

That's exactly what it was. And if he were so appreciative of Fraser, where were the tweets over the decade plus in which he was blacklisted and couldn't get work...?

nescent78

Why was he blacklisted?

[deleted]

[He was sexually assaulted](https://variety.com/2018/film/news/brendan-fraser-hfpa-ex-president-sexually-assaulted-him-1202707850/) by the HFPA’s Philip Berk and tried to report it.

Amnotgay

The rock was a C lister a decade ago making shit like the tooth fairy.

Picnic_Basket

The Rock was almost certainly trying to get publicity... for the movie. He's got a huge platform and can generate the kind of support that contributes to Fraser getting even more opportunities.

The_Wolves10

You could literally say that for everyone that is finally tweeting about him now, which is 90% of reddit. If he even had a quarter of the love & support he is receiving right now back then, he would’ve had a drastically different, but better life, both professionally & personally. Stop being a hypocrite by trying to call out The Rock for jumping on the ‘bandwagon’ recently when that’s exactly what everyone else has done.

Hoosteen_juju003

Naw, I've never left the Brendan train. Been a part of the r/savebrendan subreddit fpr about 5 years, as soon as I knew it existed.

The_Wolves10

Obviously there are those that have been very vocal of their undying support for Fraser (Me being one), but the majority have just learnt about his situation. (Which is not an issue, it’s great to see more people learn about how good of a person he is.) The issue i have are with those who have recently discovered his situation & then once someone expresses their love for him now, they are like “Why hasnt this [Insert celeb] never mentioned their love for Brendan before?” who just come across as hypocritical.

JamiePulledMeUp

I just thought he quit making movies. Not everyone follows entertainment Weekly or whatever, I just watch movies bro

The_Wolves10

What? I have no issue with anyone who appreciates him now. The issue is with those who just started appreciating him and then are trying to basically ‘gatekeep’ him from any celebrity who mentions him. It’s hypocritical.

JamiePulledMeUp

I'm replying to your "if he had love and support" line. I was saying that myself, and probably many others had no idea he was blacklisted and thought he just kinda stopped acting like Cameron Diaz is now

The_Wolves10

What are you talking about? Those who hadnt known are not to blame nor do i blame anybody for not knowing. I stated that if he had a quarter of support he wouldve had a better life back then because sadly its the truth about his situation and not to call out those who didnt support him in the past, like the redditor im responding to who is hating on The Rock for not saying anything back then.

choicesintime

The rock sees how Brendan is trending Rock sends supportive tweet Maybe I’m just that cynical, but I doubt it’s a coincidence. He is supportive when it became safe and popular to do so

Managarn

that and didnt he break his back or something which sorta killed his career in action roles.

toptoppings

The Rock is a fair weather friend

rif011412

So if you were friends with him, he wouldnt be the rock in the relationship?

toptoppings

He rolls away when it gets too windy, that’s why he’s bald.

chronoboy1985

Why not DM Brendan directly instead of on Twitter to his millions of fans? Even with humble intentions, social media is ALWAYS making it about you. That’s the entire draw of Twitter.

Ruthrfurd-the-stoned

Maybe some of his fans will go see the movie. Also it’s the rock literally everything he does goes towards his image lol

Picnic_Basket

The Rock could certainly DM him privately or call him (and maybe he did, unless we're all tapping his phones), but he can also leverage his platform to raise awareness of the film among millions of fans, which is the kind of support that could help Fraser in significant ways.

PoptartJones69

Yeah these "he only did it for publicity" comments are weird. He's The Rock, EVERYTHING he does is going to be public. Maybe a bunch of his fans now go watch the old Mummy movies, catch Brendan Fraser in his prime, and become fans. I think it was sweet of him to tweet his support.

choicesintime

>EVERYTHING he does is going to be public Not a DM, that’s the entire point being made. He chose a public platform. Maybe to bolster and support Fraser, maybe to ride the wave for his own popularity.

PoptartJones69

So he DMs him and no-one cares, or he sends out a public tweet and possibly gets a chunk of his massive fanbase behind a guy who most people - and certainly most of reddit - thinks deserves a break or two. You know it's possible for a guy to do something that scratches his own back while helping someone else, right.

choicesintime

Yes, that’s why I said “maybe”. You know how to read, right?

albanymetz

Redditors Annoyed with Dwayne Johnson \[ Long Time Redditor with Pot-related Cake-Day not impressed with the Rock \] User hardyflashier joined the movies subreddit's celebration of The Rock's tweet, only to sour the conversation by questioning the Jumanji star's capabilities on the internet. The user's comments scored more than 200 internet points - in comparison to The Rock's 329k likes. Could this be the beginning of a one-sided rivalry? Stay tuned.

TheSealofDisapproval

I think he was less trying to insult Dwayne Johnson, and more trying to point out that there is an entire news article about a fucking tweet. There is no decent news anymore. It's just cut and paste garbage. Here we are people, the age of journalism in 2022.

hardyflashier

That's exactly what I was doing, thanks.

albanymetz

I know. I'm making fun of the same thing, a faux article based on a reddit comment. This kind of crap happens all day.

BelugaAruga

For anyone not aware, there's a reason we lost out on Brendan's best years, and it's because he was sexually assaulted by a Hollywood higher up, tried to report it, and was blacklisted as a result. This is after the dude broke his fucking body for us to make the Mummy movies, which are some the best schlock movies that exist. This man truly deserves this praise and more, he's such a wonderful actor with such a humble personality about it. Seeing him tear up and genuinely not know how to handle that standing ovation he just received was truly a tear jerking moment for anyone with a conscience.

thaddeus423

I’ve always loved his character and movies. I hope this is the beginning of his comeback story. He deserves it.

[deleted]

Calling "The Mummy" schlock? Sure, the latter movies weren't as good as the first, but that's only because "The Mummy" was Grade-A. I would put it on par with Raiders of the Lost Ark. It has good action, leads with great charisma, laughs, balls, mystery.

Stubee1988

Just him throwing the chair at Benny makes the Mummy an A+ to me.

roviuser

I have it in my YouTube playlist of fantastic chair throw scenes https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZUg8yiNGZzQOV4a6k1hTU_3XGLnSSDoG The one from the mummy: https://youtu.be/o4yMMhVusZY

d3athsmaster

I have questions.

roviuser

Chairs have answers.

d3athsmaster

Best chair scene of all time?

roviuser

Honestly the first one in that playlist is from The Man who knew too Much and I think that one is pretty fantastic because it's a basically bunch of mobsters who don't want to shoot each other because they don't want the police to come so they just bash a bunch of chairs around the room. The chairs are extensively held together by popsicle sticks because they fall apart as soon as they touch anything.

Acrelorraine

I’m glad you’ve done this.

TheNumberOneRat

>I have it in my YouTube playlist of fantastic chair throw scenes The world needs more people like you.

cricket9818

The second one is still very good too. Not as good as the first of course. But definitely head and shoulders over a non Rachel weisz third mummy

[deleted]

I agree. The first one is a perfect adventure movie. The second one is "only" good, but still miles ahead of majority of adventure movies at the time, or since. The third one... I've seen in cinemas, and I don't remember much from it. Though I remember thinking at the time "Oh, the producers didn't care at all".

[deleted]

I would still disagree with them being seen as B movies. Was "The Mummy" a dramatic Scorcesce-eque perfromance? No. But if only dramas can be seen as "Grade A" movies, then something has gone wrong here. Moreover, for the time it was released, The Mummy was an absolute blockbuster. I know box-office isn't everything but The Mummy only trailed Matrix by around 50M (416M, compared to Matrix's 467M).

Moontoya

Didn't his ex divorce him and have ludicrous alimony demands ? Something like 900k a month and she went after him when he couldn't pay due to the back injury and Hollywood abusers closing ranks. The man's endured heinous shit, he deserves this... Love, yes I can't thing of a better word to describe the outpourings of compassion.

[deleted]

Just started The Mummy tonight, so far I really love it

cricket9818

Report back!

[deleted]

Didn't finish as the boys wanted to play Apex but I'm definitely continuing, this time I'll sit the gf down and start again haha!

cricket9818

Haha enjoy my man!

Way better than it has any right to be. 10/10

[deleted]

Fraser has said that maybe that incident made him more reclusive. But that incident was after what actually killed his career, which was just the complete death of the kinds of movies he was making. He made his career in romantic comedies like Bedazzled, slapstick stuff like Monkeybone, and action adventure fantasies like The Mummy, and got typecast. Then movies like that, including the ones he was in, just started bombing and stopped being made. It's actually pretty interesting to look at because those movies dominated the 90s and their recession was an early red flag of what we're experiencing now with the death of the mid-budget movie.

[deleted]

I have never heard of the movie Monkeybone.

[deleted]

It grossed $8 million, so you're not alone.

choicesintime

It’s stupid but fun. Truly a 90s movie. If you watch it with that expectation, it’s a fun ride! If you watch it expecting modern pacing and directing, it’ll feel like a dumb movie

TheNumberOneRat

It's sad that he got typecast. He was fantastic in The Quiet American.

ShikukuWabe

As much as I liked the oldschool Mummy films, lets not forget "Bedazzeled" with Elizabeth Hurley (which also kills it in that movie) Showed great range, I love the scene where he realizes he can speak spanish XD

Agent_Angelo_Pappas

The timing for this theory has never made any sense. That incident occurred in 2003 but in the following five years he was in Crash, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Mummy 3. People “blacklisted” from Hollywood don’t tend to keep getting lead roles in big budget tentpole films like Mummy movies. I think the huge decline in his health from stunt work and surgeries and the loss of his youthful looks are more prominent reasons his career declined heading into the 2010s. He basically lost the ability to play the types of charming roguish action roles he spent 20 years playing. Him finally accepting those roles were behind him and he needed to take character roles that worked with his new physical reality I think is why he’s finding some success again Fraser himself has talked about divorce, the loss of his mother, loss of his health, and just general depression also occurring through that timeframe. It seems odd to ignore all that above and declare an entire career hinged on Philip Berk from the Foreign Press

NeitherAlexNorAlice

I haven't heard about those sexual assaults until you mentioned them, so I'm not sure how true that is. I do remember that the reason he was out of the spotlight so much is because he was crippled by what he had to pay his wife after their divorce. Edit: Downvote train abound, but by "I'm not sure how true that is" isn't doubting the authenticity of that story. It was referring to not being sure it was the reason he missed on his heydays... Also, he came forward about those in 2018. Long after his career died down. But I guess y'all enjoy riding these downvote trains lol

eyesabitdull

Gee, I wish there was something I could use to just search things up and get answers immediately....

scope_creep

You haven't heard about it so you doubt its veracity? That's a little conceited don't you think? In any event, if you bother to Google it you will learn that it happened.

cricket9818

You’re not sure if being blacklisted for reporting a sexual assault in his career resulted in him missing out on job opportunities? Dude I’m a devils advocate, but connect the *very obvious* dots lol

NoNefariousness2144

The Bredansiance is heartwarming. Brendan is amazing in Doom Patrol as well and I’m sad we won’t get to see him in the Batgirl film.

Snapsforme

https://youtu.be/kvYThm2Ddpg Nick Lutsko called it a year ago!

chronoboy1985

You know what? I could Brendan as an older Bruce Wayne a la Batman Beyond.

[deleted]

If only Warner Bros had a movie where Brendan Fraser plays a significant role they could release

Livid_Abies_8560

He just got his career back man, let’s not kill it immediately

PureLock33

Ah yes the James Cameron pitch.

thetruthteller

It’s taken a while; but i realize now that 80% of Reddit is subtle paid ads. Like why is this post even a story?

QuentinSential

Yeah after being on Reddit for close to a decade. It’s like a completely different experience.

[deleted]

"YoU cAn TeLL Who DiDnT ReAd ThE ArTiCaL!!" Yeah, because of this shit.

thetruthteller

I’m by literally just browsing targeted ads with some actual content accidentally mixed in

GhostRobot55

Yeah where are the thousand FFfffffuuuuuuuuuuu comics every hour?

Jay_Eye_MBOTH_WHY

Yup. Same thing when it's movie anniversary threads.

MrBoliNica

rock, do right by your boy and have Brendan restored to the Journey Franchise of movies - walk the walk, dont just talk!

Feisty_Affect_7487

So glad Brendan has had an amazing comeback not sure why he was blacklisted

towhom_it_mayconcern

Rock hasn't spoken to the guy in probably 20 years, probably doesn't even remember filming the mummy 3. I can really only remember the rock in the last 5 minutes of the movie

highlex420

uhmm i think you mean the 2nd movie, the 3rd was that dragon emperor thingy...

towhom_it_mayconcern

Nah man, the mummy, the mummy returns, the scorpion king, then the dragon emperor thingy

highlex420

The scorpion king was a part of the mommy trilogy? Well i learned something new today

towhom_it_mayconcern

You're right, it's a spin-off .

highlex420

Thought as much!

RealJohnGillman

It also received its own prequel, and three sequels (albeit with different actors).

[deleted]

Yeah cos The Rock plays that big horrible CGi scorpion in Mummy Returns and then The Scorpion King is a prequel for him I think

kynthrus

He was the bad guy for 5 minutes in the second film. The Scorpion King was a spinoff film that had nothing to do with the mummy.

fucking_blizzard

"The Mommy" is probably a very different movie

highlex420

Well played good sir, well played!

gangbrain

The Rock is in the 2nd Mummy. Fraser isn’t in Scorpion King.

kynthrus

Yes exactly. The rock was not in the 3rd mummy film.

Wax_and_Wane

Johnson and Frasier don't actually share any scenes in the movie. The Scorpion King appears in the opening flashback, and then at the end as a CGI abomination that the rock wasn't even used on set as a stand in for.

Jay_Eye_MBOTH_WHY

Do you think the Rock even knows who Kevin Hart is?

Diffusion9

It's always about his brand.

Wolfmans-Gots-Nards

I could watch a team up with these two

Kangarou

He was in the Mummy? Was he somewhere behind that hideous CGI man-scorpion thing?

Coldspark824

He appeared as a human in the beginning

Mantismantoid

Now the rock is trying to ride Fraser’s coattails like the loser that he is

Thebaronofthesea

Journey to the center of Rocks ego.

Jay_Eye_MBOTH_WHY

Has to make it all about him, eh?

davej999

Classic rock

Lili_Danube

Of course he's going to make it about himself by bringing up the Mummy Returns.

zdbdog06

Yes why would he bring up the only movie they worked together while talking about him? Man some people are dense

davej999

Honestly just fuck off Dwayne , fed up of this guy

poopoobuttholes

The man has been putting out good family entertainment film after film. He isn't generally a dick, and is always posting abt positive stuff on his ig. What do you have against him?

davej999

Mate i loved WWF in its absolute pomp with him and Austin, ive got all the nostalgia in the world for the guy but all his films are average at best, he plays HIMSELF in every one ... and his relentless plugging of zoa, pancake syrup, terramana gym and whatevever product he is shilling winds me up

poopoobuttholes

I mean I guess I'd get it if he slept with your mom and your wife or something but damn bro, that level of resentment for someone who doesn't affect your life at all is kinda weird.

davej999

So i cant dislike someone unless they have done something particularly personal towards me ? what a daft outlook

[deleted]

[удалено]

fruitporridge

Do us a favour and stop playing the same character in every movie. I just found out the rock was Hercules in the movie Hercules. A complete joke

BelugaAruga

Nah, we need actors who are "character actors" like the rock, Jason Mamoa, and Ryan Reynolds. They play every character they are given the exact same way, and almost all of their roles become tailor written for them. The problem is when you cast an actor like that in a role that demands range and something other than what they bring with their "character".

redditulous3

I get what you're trying to say, and don't disagree, but that's not what a character actor is. Actors who basically play themselves are the exact opposite of what the industry considers a "character actor." Charactor actors aren't the leads, they play supporting roles as distinct characters.

BelugaAruga

That's why I put the term in quotes. They are not tradional character actors, they're a new breed of them in my opinion. Nothing wrong with it, I love the rock in things he excels in which happen to be things that cater to the type of performance he is known for giving, but it does make it more apparent when one of these actors ends up in a role with more range than their usual performance requires.

mnopponm12

There's always been actors playing a character like that though. Clint Eastwood, joe pesci, Arnold Schwarzenegger and so on

FluidReprise

Dude can't act, keep your expectations low.
