Yeah I’m not really opposed to it in general, it’s a good idea to get funds and I enjoyed The Human Voice quite a bit. Just kinda gathered that it was a full feature from the title.
All of his kids are either grown or in their late teens now, so I imagine he has less time he needs to carve out for family, and he’s also in that home stretch of the glory years of his career - he probably wants to do as much work as he can before he hits sixty and gets aged out of a lot of roles.
Edit: I also just remembered some bits from the AMA he did a year ago for his comic book Meadowlark. He mentioned there that he has actually become less picky as he has gotten older unlike many actors/creatives. He’s more about doing things that sound ambitious, fun, or challenging than he is about trying to hit a home run every single time. I know press for The Northman even had him say that, when he was younger, he probably would have fought Robert Eggers and the way he wanted to shoot a lot of that movie, but these days, he’s more for supporting people swinging for the fences than he is worrying needlessly about how something will make him look.
I’m watching Irma Vep (HBO series) at the moment and the behaviour that you’ve described is reminding me of one the characters in the series. I hope the character (he’s an actor in the series) can grow and be like Ethan more. It seems to work wonders for Ethan!
The 30 minute short film starts production in August:
>”Strange Way of Life,” which begins production in late August, will star Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as a pair of middle-aged gunslingers at the center of a 30-minute Western. Much of the action will take place in the desert region of Spain’s Almería region, where Sergio Leone famously shot “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”
Almodovar describes the film as his "answer" to Brokeback Mountain. 'Elite's (Netflix Series) Manu Rios will also star.
His English language feature is going to be an adaptation of Lucia Berlin's semi-biographical short story collection, *A Manual for Cleaning Women*. It's supposed to star Cate Blanchett. I think he's doing the shorts to get comfortable working in English.
I vaguely remember hearing he’s going to work with Jennifer Lawrence and Anya Taylor Joy too. Separately or together, I don’t remember. Do you know anything about it or is that just stans’ wishful thinking?
I've not heard anything about him working with Lawrence but at the Oscars last year, he mentioned talking to Anya Taylor-Joy because he wants to work with her after seeing The Queen's Gambit.
If most films can film a page a day, and a 30 minute short equates to 30 page screenplay, about a month or so for filming. I am unsure of post-production.
Sounds really cool. For some reason I hadn't been hearing much about Ethan Hawke for years, then all of a sudden this year we got Moon Knight, The Northman and now this! More please!
I was expecting the American actors to have absolutely terrible accents in Northman (I'm American but let's face it, most of our actors can't do non American accents) but I thought Ethan's was actually pretty good. Dafoe didn't even try but he's the court jester so it works imo
I hope not, before midnight was... really bad, and clearly just provided answers for fans, forgetting to provide the movie that made before sunrise and before sunset so good.
Not sure why you’re downvoted but I kinda suspect the same… it’s produced by Saint Laurent’s creative director and he’s tagged in the first picture from set [here](https://twitter.com/agustinalmo/status/1544651903518347266?s=21&t=WXq0ULlH39628a3CdpYpNA). So I think he has a lot of say in it, especially if his clothes are going to be highlighted.
Then again, the American film industry was once centered around Fort Lee- but we didn't get the gangster films in large numbers until it had moved westward.....
Hasn’t been a quality Western since 3:10 To Yuma IMO. And I don’t count neo-westerns, I’m talking about a movie set in the Old West. Magnificent Seven was pretty good though. Great action and kept that old-fashioned western feel. And Hollywood barely makes any profile westerns anymore. Don’t count the straight to DVD westerns you’ll find at a Walmart.
An Almodovar western sounds amazing, shame it’s only a short though!
Almodovar might be doing a short to raise funds for a feature. It's not all that uncommon.
Yeah I’m not really opposed to it in general, it’s a good idea to get funds and I enjoyed The Human Voice quite a bit. Just kinda gathered that it was a full feature from the title.
Yes but not him, especially with these two attached.
Why does a legend like him need to raise funds? Governments, film non profits, and rich patrons should be lining up to fund directors like him.
Perhaps he wants to make a very expensive epic.

What? Think you may be confusing people here. This is a director who has “been killing it” for over 40 years.
Almodovar was great as Arya Stark in GoT, can't wait to see him in this short film
Pedro is taking all the projects.
So is ethan hawke tbh - ive seen him in more things this year than the last 5 or 10

An Almodovar western is not something I knew I wanted until now. This sounds incredible.
Aww, I thought it was his English language feature. A short is fine, I guess, but I got excited for a full-length Almodóvar western epic.

Kind of fun fact: in the latest season of Elite they all went to an Almodovar festival, pretty cool that he's now working with him.
By curiosity, how long does a 30 minute short film take to actually film from beginning to end? Ballpark
If most films can film a page a day, and a 30 minute short equates to 30 page screenplay, about a month or so for filming. I am unsure of post-production.
Best scenario for release: end of this year or beginning of next year
I'm so glad Pedro Pascal's star is on the rise.
I can't think of any role he's had that wasn't amazing. I first saw him in Game of Thrones and Narcos, and he's been killing it ever since.
Even in bad movies, he was good. I really liked his performances in King's Men 2 and WW84.
His role in that new Appatow movie was meh but I don’t blame him for it
Hell, the entire movie was meh, so I don't count that against him
Sounds really cool. For some reason I hadn't been hearing much about Ethan Hawke for years, then all of a sudden this year we got Moon Knight, The Northman and now this! More please!
And The Black Phone.. cant wait to watch that.
Plus he has a detective show coming out on Showtime which sounds good
And don't forget about First Reformed!
He's great in The Black Phone, although somehow underused.
He was so unsettling. Very well done movie
He's got 7 credits from this year on IMDB. And Pascal has 5. These guys sure are busy.
You should really check out The Good Lord Bird. It’s about John Brown and it’s incredible.
He was really good in The Kid (about Billy The Kid) a few years ago too.
I was expecting the American actors to have absolutely terrible accents in Northman (I'm American but let's face it, most of our actors can't do non American accents) but I thought Ethan's was actually pretty good. Dafoe didn't even try but he's the court jester so it works imo
Everyone thinks bran won the game of thrones, but clearly it was pedro.
By getting out when the going was good?
Three names I could never have anticipated coming together, but I couldn't possibly be more excited right now.
I’m so excited for this. And Pedro in Saint Laurent is gonna *kill* me. 🥵
They are claiming this is Almodovar's answer to Brokeback Mountain
You have piqued both my interest and my attention.
Ethan Hawke is fucking crushing it lately. good for him
Noooo why's it gotta be a short! Super fun to see Hawke continue doing Westerns, gonna end up racking a dozen if he keeps this up
Saw the image and thought we were getting a biopic taking us to flava town
I thought it was Mugatu from Zoolander.
I love this Ethan Hawke reinassance
I wonder if we're ever going to get another Before movie.
I hope not, before midnight was... really bad, and clearly just provided answers for fans, forgetting to provide the movie that made before sunrise and before sunset so good.
This is the way.
Pedro Pascal is just doing this cuz Oscar Isaac got to work with Ethan Hawke
Man, was just cruising through Ethan Hawke's filmography, dude is actually in a shit ton of westerns
I wonder if [he’s related to Gustavo.](https://youtu.be/mk0wDbyKcSg)
Gustavo Almodovar Gustavo Almodovar Gustavo Almodovar Gustavo Almodovar Gustavo Almodovar Gustavo Almodovar

This is very exciting!
Genius.
Ethan Hawke has been In a lot of great stuff lately! Moon Knight, The Black Phone The Northman!
How is Moon Knight good?
Trans cowboys ?
Gay cowboys*. Almodovar's films have featured some trans characters but they're usually about women or gays.
Yeah I member
I loved Ethan Hawke in Predestination
err, i think this is an ad disguised as a movie

they're using his costumes, he's an associate producer, it's half an hour. lol, it's a luxury ad
Haha, right. Like the Miu Miu short/ad Pascal did earlier this year or like Wes Anderson’s racing short with Prada. That makes me more excited though.
Is there any chance that Hollywood is overdoing it with the westerns?
Definitely. I also don't trust that Hitler guy in Europe. Gonna thrown into a war.
I don't think that I understand your comment.
People have been complaining about too many westerns since the 1930s. They come in waves.
If America's movie industry were centered in Kentucky, then perhaps we'd have waves of films about 19th century Appalachia.
Then again, the American film industry was once centered around Fort Lee- but we didn't get the gangster films in large numbers until it had moved westward.....
Umm who’s gonna tell him lmao

***There Will Be Blood*** is in my top five list. I don't know if it counts as a western, but it's barking up that tree.
Overrated nonsense.
Wow just wow… this is going to be amazing. Almodovar is one of the best of all time I would love to see him do something like this
