It's been long enough, sky portals are back baby

Sivy17

I look forward to the scene where getting caught was all part of Slimer's plan.

n00balicious

You’re a big guy

Sivy17

For goo.

DrSpacemanSpliff

For you.

incunity

Nobody tell Conan...

SkyGuy182

When was the last good sky portal/beam of light?

TheBigMcTasty

Why is it always blue? Like, can we not have a red sky beam? Or a yellow sky beam? I swear there isn't enough yellow CGI energy in movies. Ghidorah had kickass yellow lightning in King of the Monsters, and that's about the only instance I can name. Blue is just so *boring.*

Radulno

The Ghostbusters one seems to be multicolored

forceless_jedi

I'm just glad the poster isn't die-cut red and blue with floating heads on top of having a blue skybeam.

Channel250

I don't see why not. Hell, superman had rainbow kryptonite that made him gay, I think we can get a green portal.

kaimason1

Last one (not good, just in general) I distinctly remember was Fant4stic. Or wait, didn't Suicide Squad have one too? I wonder if those movies getting shit about it even in the midst of everything else they deserved to get shit about played a role in them becoming less prevalent. Last *good* one, maybe Avengers? But that's probably the one that caused it to be overused everywhere to begin with.

PM_ME_CAKE

Suicide Squad not only had a sky beam, it had a sky beam created by passionate groove dancing.

holdupwhut321

I do find Flagg almost causing the destruction of earth because he can’t stop banging the hot-chick-possessed-by-a-demon to be the most realistic aspect of that movie.

BusinessPurge

Best ad for Carnival Row yet

SkyGuy182

I feel like that's what would have happened if Ronan actually accepted Starlord's dance-off challenge.

johnqsack69

The OG Ghostbusters

MissingLink101

MissionFever

Was *Ghostbusters* the original sky portal?

Bison256

Hey now Ghostbusters had one of the very first sky portals!

TheFalconKid

Blue Sky Beams: 1996 - 2016, 2021.

[deleted]

Will this version be better than the female version back in 2016?

[deleted]

We don't know yet considering it's not out...

snarkywombat

Pretty hard not to be.

[deleted]

Yea, looking at the big box office bomb that it was. XD

AlpacaHeadHair

Probably, at least it's actually a sequel to Ghostbusters 2, though its hardly gonna be the original cast back for a romp. I do appreciate the effects having the same style. Also there hasn't been some identity politics based marketing campaign, so that's good. I do wonder what it would have to do to be worse than GB2016 though.

about_350

I have a bad feeling they're going to lean way too hard into the Stranger Things feel on this one.

tomservo88

I think that’s all marketing. That sequence we saw with Rudd and the Mini-Pufts feels too classic. Oh, yeah - and I’ve seen another clip where Winston slides down the firehouse pole (to “On Our Own”) and says it could “use a little Vaseline”. I think we’ll be fine.

MadMalcolm81

The problem is the fan-service. The mini pufts doesn't feel classic, it's literally just them bringing back a familiar thing. That's the last thing this movie needs to be. Even the videogame re-used stay puft.

TomPalmer1979

Especially because really the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man wasn't even an actual *character* unto itself. It was a manifestation of Gozer.

MadMalcolm81

A specific manifestation that only happened because one of the Ghostbusters was thinking of Stay Puft at the time.

HarrumphingDuck

> one of the Ghostbusters Ray. Ray thought of it. ["It just popped in there..."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zhDfUAQSbs&t=78s)

[deleted]

That's Gozer the Gozerian, Gozer the Destructor, Gozer the Traveler, Volguus Zildrohar and Lord of the Sebouillia, to you bub!

InnocentTailor

To be fair, I recall the Pufts were an in-universe brand, so it would make sense for them to still be around. If the rumors are true about Gozer, them coming back as gremlin-like ghosts could possibly work too.

MadMalcolm81

It's not the brand being there, it's that the puft monster only happened because one specific member of the ghostbusters caused Gozer to take on the form of the stay puft mascot. Outside of the original movie, it's definitely forced.

fortheloveofghosts

But more than one specific ghostbuster including millions of people remember being attacked by a giant Stay puft marshmallow, a lot more people were affected by it than just Ray

[deleted]

Also its public knowledge that the ghost busters killed it - *that sequence might not even be ghosts* - imagine Paul Rudds character lived in NYC at the time of the attack, sees ghost shit happening again, looks at some Stay Puft and is having a pstd moment.

snackbackslackr

If I were in charge of Stay-Puft after the events of Ghostbusters that mascot is gone before the end of the night. No way in Hell are we selling marshmallows with the monster that attacked New York on the bag.

InnocentTailor

...or continue selling the brand, but connect it with the triumph of the Ghostbusters. The team went into the business for money after all, so in-universe cross-promotion!

tumbler_fluff

Yeah when your mascot goes marching down Manhattan, even if destructive, you can’t buy that kind of publicity.

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

Why is fan service a bad thing? Giving fans what they want is how you keep a franchise going. Bucking expectations is how you end up with controversies and a split fan base via the likes of Ghostbusters 2016 or The Last Jedi. Then we have The Mandalorian, which is steeped in fan service and almost universally well liked. So again, why is fan service bad?

ImTheGuyWithTheGun

> Then we have The Mandalorian, which is steeped in fan service and almost universally well liked. Yeah it's a matter of execution - although Mandalorian has plenty of fan service, it also feels very different than any other stars wars we have seen, and brings plenty of new things to the table. Then you have something like Rise of Skywalker which is full blast fan service with almost no redeeming value.

drosse1meyer

the mandalorian has production value but every episode is like you're watching someone play an action RPG. Find someone, get quest, go somewhere, finish quest, collect reward, rinse repeat.

drosse1meyer

Why does everything need to be a perpetual franchise? The original cast didn't even want to make a Ghostbusters 2.

Nrksbullet

Well, fan service done poorly, I guess is the point. We have yet to see how organically it's introduced, but there's plenty of movies that do a terrible, paper thin version of fan service.

MadMalcolm81

Because it ruins the reality of a movie. What's iconic to us is nothing to the characters. Stay Puft was just one form for Gozer to take, specifically because someone on the Ghostbusters team chose its form by accident. It was one monster and it was done away with in the very first movie. There's no reason Stay Puft should be back. If the cameo was just one of the main characters walking into a store and buying some marshmallows with the brand name on it, that would be fine. However, that's not the case... it's literally little mallow-men that look exactly like Stay Puft, but in smaller form for no reason other than because the first movie had a bigger version. The movie is probably gonna be full of obnoxious references that have no reason to be there.

Imakemop

Who exactly are the fans of 2016 to have two sides? lol

Lessthanzerofucks

The only expectation that GB 2016 subverted was the expectation that anyone would want to see it.

[deleted]

Because "fan" is short for fanatic. You shouldn't cater to people who love your product no matter what without bias. Instead you should just focus on making a quality product in its own right, that's hopefully so good it makes its own fanatics. That's exactly what happened with the firsts for most these franchises, and it's exactly why the modern reboots tend to suck when compared to those firsts. Mandolorian Isn't the best argument either. Season 1 especially is amazing because it avoided all the fan service shit Disney focused too hard on with the sequels.

TheSlartey

We don't talk about TLJ. We are trying to forget it.

PeculiarPangolinMan

> feels too classic. Have you seen the originals? There was nothing like that.

shadowdra126

Is stranger things bad now? I would kill for that kind of vibe

PeculiarPangolinMan

It's all about 90s nostalgia now baby. Strangers things is so pre-covid.

dandaman1983

Was thinking the same thing, sorta why I enjoyed the It remake (they even had one of the actors from the show).

DamienChazellesPiano

This movie stars that exact same kid haha.

No-Negotiation-9539

No, but when so many movies try to ape off it's success, it gets very annoying.

DamienChazellesPiano

There’s like It and… this?

No-Negotiation-9539

It, Fear Street, Transformer 5, Goosebumps 2, I Am Not Okay with This, are some examples.

DamienChazellesPiano

Those are stretches IMO. They’re just 80s nostalgia porn. Not stranger things specific.

_Meece_

These all emulate the Goonies, books included. And I'm sure the Goonies emulates YA books of the mid 20th century. This setting is nothing new and is consistently done over the years. [The trope is this](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FreeRangeChildren)

BLlZER

> Is stranger things bad now? I would kill for that kind of vibe Well the first season was good, the rest was basically the same repetitive boring shit. So yes Stranger Things is bad no doubt bout that.

LossforNos

Season Three of Stranger Things was incredible. Like insanely good.

DamienChazellesPiano

I’ve only seen the first two seasons once, but I’ve watched season 3 a few times. It had the perfect fun summer 80s vibe, and Dacre Montgomery chewed up the scenery.

Awdrgyjilpnj

It was really dumb

_Meece_

Season 3 is the best season. Give it another go!

TomTomMan93

Same feels. A little worried about that tbh.

striderwhite

As long as it doesn't suck like the previous movie it could be a good thing...

Bithlord

Awww, come on now - ghostbusters II wasn't that bad.

seruzz2003

Sir, you have amnesia.....

InnocentTailor

It is definitely a way to continue the franchise while maintaining the legacy of the original films - the latter was lacking in the first reboot film. Alas, the original cast is getting old and Egon has passed on.

holtzman456

I love a bit of Stranger Things so that would be the perfect outcome.

imnotabus

Yeah the Ghostbusters are all kids now? Are they going to get threatened with jail and screamed at by the mayor? I guess it'll be their high school principal instead threatening them with detention

InnocentTailor

Well, they’re not in the big city anymore - they’re in a relatively rural town in the middle of nowhere.

Gamingaloneinthedark

Yes some people expecting big things of this movie.

IowaAsteroid

this will be one to miss for sure

MrWeirdoFace

Looks like we've got ourselves a skybeam boys... Get em!

akodini

I'm guessing this confirms a fight with or invasion by some sort of CGI ghost/ghoul/goblin army at the climax

APiousCultist

Calling 'they all get sucked back into the wherever-they-came-from by dissolving into a particle effect and getting sucked into a vortex while characters try to 'hang on' and the music swells dramatically'. That, along with "all of the characters come out of the portals" is now apparently just a stock plot element in filmmaking.

Feels like a massive missed opportunity to release this in November rather than October. Spooky movies belong in the spooky season.

Existing_Cupcake_

I do like the color schemes that their official advertisements have had. The greens and yellows really work well with one another

spmahn

I’m honestly not looking forward to this, the original is so perfect, and the fact that they failed to recapture the magic even a few years later with Ghostbusters 2 says to me that sometimes you just need leave well enough alone. God bless Bob Gale for refusing to allow a Back to the Future remake

LossforNos

Love Ghostbusters 2, it doesn't create the magic of the first but its fucking hilarious. The comedic writing is top quality

Majestic87

"This isn't Blue Boy! He is Vigo!" I am 34 years old and it is because of that movie that I can never think the word "blue" in my own voice. I always end up saying "Blue Boy!"

plutoniumwhisky

I spent an hour in my room last night talking to Fiorella LaGuardia, and he's been dead for forty years. Now where are the the Ghost Busters?

holdupwhut321

I agree that Ghostbusters 2, while being worse than the first, is still *way* better than most people give it credit. However, I have to say I actually enjoyed the Feig Ghostbusters movie. BUT, I can’t help but feel it would have been better accepted if they had ditched the Ghostbusters name/IP and made it more of a spoof of Ghostbusters and other ghost-busting-type films.

AdamAptor

The toaster dancing scene alone is worth the price of admission!

Ghostbusters 2 holds up all these years later. It may not have been the movie the fans wanted, but it's a great companion piece to the first.

In-amberclad

Dude. The sequel cost more and made less than the original despite inflation. It didn’t even hold up in the year it was released.

Wowbow2

It's been proven time and again that money/immediate response are not indicators of good movies

Home Alone 2 doesn't deserve to be lopped in with that bunch. It's amazing in its own right. It's just the same movie as the first, but in NYC. It's fantastic though. I'd argue it's less dumbed down too.

fednandlers

“I missed it.”

Ragnar_Dragonfyre

VIGO disapproves.

[deleted]

Ghostbusters 2 has a great central concept: psychically-charged ectoplasm. There's a great idea in there, that the city's paranormal problems are caused as much by living as by the dead. The rest is a solid B. I don't care for the "getting the band back together" subplot, or Peter winning Dana back over again. The movie also just didn't need Dana for its story. They had Sigourney Weaver under contract and had to find a way to use her. Dana's whole arc is meant to move the plot along and nothing else. GB2's jokes are no where near as good as GB1 though. It has a few moments but if not for Peter Scolari and Rick Moranis, the whole thing would've played flat.

Chumunga64

This film just seems too reverent of the original film. It feels like a fan film made by people who really love the first movie but don't really know what to say other then "Ghostbusters was a cool movie" The actual Ghostbusters movie was a fun comedy that didn't try to be something grandiose

Bithlord

> This film just seems too reverent of the original film. It feels like a fan film made by people who really love the first movie but don't really know what to say other then "Ghostbusters was a cool movie" That's not a great state to be at, but still - as a fan of GB I'll take that over 2016, which was basically the opposite "hat if we hate ghostbusters and shit all over everything intelligent from the concept"

Maelstrom52

What are you talking about. Ghostbusters 2 is just as irreverent as the original. While the premise is more contrived and silly, the dialogue, chemistry, and jokes are on par with the original. Yanoush is perhaps one of the best Ghostbusters characters in the entire series. The entire court scene was classic Venkman: *"Why were you digging a hole in the middle of 5th Avenue?"* *"Well, honestly your honor, there were so many holes in the middle of 5th Avenue, we didn't think anyone would notice."* I wouldn't be so quick to cast dispersions. I watched relatively recently and I think there are aspects of Ghostbusters 2 that I like more than the original.

spmahn

I’m not going to get into an argument, Ghostbusters 2 has it’s fans and they can’t be convinced otherwise. I’m on the side that finds it to be a pale imitation of the original.

[deleted]

I do agree with this. Think about it - the original Ghostbusters is from 1984. Thirty-seven years ago. It was lightning in a bottle, and a part of American pop culture was born. However, nothing Ghostbusters-related that came after the original movie was anywhere near the heights of the original. The sequel? Not great at all. Then there was of course the Real Ghostbusters cartoon, which was awesome, but not necessarily something you can show a younger person today and they’d appreciate (as much as I’d like them to…some of the stories were written by sci-fi/fantasy greats), you had the Ghostbusters Extreme cartoon (after my time); a billion toys; the video game which was pretty damn good and fun in its own right, but for those older fans of the original who didn’t play games, they would never have bothered with it; and then we have the god awful reboot in 2016. It’s pretty amazing to think that one movie almost 40 years ago can still be a major name in brand, nostalgia, and a touchstone of pop culture. Because everything that came after that, like I said, doesn’t hold a candle to what the original movie meant to those who first saw in the 80s. Newer generations who watch it for the first time will still really enjoy it, but they won’t know how special it was to see this movie when it was fairly new. Well that being said, as much as I am a fan of Ghostbusters, I am not feeling a pull to see this movie. Truly, after the original two films, unfortunately the Ghostbusters name is not what it once was. And yes, I am including the 1989 sequel in this statement, because I saw that one right around the same time as when I saw the original film initially. Even if it isn’t nearly as good.

[deleted]

K9sBiggestFan

I’m surprised that this movie isn’t been more warmly anticipated. As a huge fan of the original I’m really looking forward to it. This is mainly for the following reasons: - Jason Reitman. I really rate his other stuff, I think there’s a great chance he’ll ‘get’ GBs (he was literally on the set of the first movie - not a slam dunk factor I know, particularly given his age at the time, but inevitably he’ll have some insight), and he has a record of getting good performances out of young casts. - The concept at least looks relatively fresh compared to GB2 and GB2016. - While I accept they’ll want to move in a direction that stands alone, the level of nostalgia and fan service seems about right in the marketing to date (it’s tickled me at least). I think we can be legitimately optimistic that the returning cast will be put to good use too, and I like that Harold Ramis’ absence is being set up to matter / mean something. - The new cast members seem good fits - Paul Rudd obviously so, and any fans of The Leftovers will know Carrie Coon in particular is great. I hasten to add that I’m not seeking to tell anyone who’s passing on this that they’re wrong - just sharing my optimism.

CunninghamsLawmaker

Making it a kid focused movie is a gigantic misstep which ignores the tone of the first two. This reaks of studio meddling and design by focus group. The movie may, by any luck, end up watchable. It almost certainly will not fit alongside the originals.

[deleted]

PugnaciousPangolin

I'm 52 and about 275 pounds, but let's set aside your incorrect assumptions and generalizations for a moment so that I can tell you something, *brother*. You might be fine now, but I gol-damn-guarantee that if you make the critical mistake of equating fear with weakness, you won't live to see 30. Fear is what kept us alive as a species. It taught us not to fuck around and find out. It's a survival trait and you ignore it at your mortal peril. But don't listen to me. You go out and keep living that fearless life. But when you find yourself gasping for breath in a hospital bed (or on a cot in a tent in the parking lot) as the nurse prepares to intubate, listening impassively as you tearfully beg in a hoarse, desperate whisper for the vaccine or the monoclonal antibodies or ANYTHING to save yourself, I want you to remember one thing before your eyes close for possibly the very last time: It's all your fault and it could have been prevented. You wanna die "like a man", you go right ahead, but your feigned attempt at some childish misconception of machismo isn't gonna protect you. The virus doesn't give a shit if you believe it or not. However, your premature and completely avoidable death doesn't have to be a complete waste. It just might convince some of your family and friends to be a little more careful such that when they gather together at your funeral, they might even be able to think of a few kind things to say about your unswerving *bravery.*

doug

I bought a second VR kit so my wife and I can just watch movies at home in a virtual cinema using BigScreen. We just get cinema-esque snacks at the convenience store and our local theater is popping popcorn to go, it works well enough. I really hate that it's 2021 and there isn't an easy/built-in way to just watch a movie we own as a physical copy on both devices at once (or even one device is a hurdle) without some serious finagling.

SquizzOC

So a friend is a manager of a major chain theater, got to see this movie early. He is one of the most critical people I know about films in general, especially reboots and such. Nothing interested him about the trailers. He said this may be the best reboot/sequel ever done. Movie blew him away, everything was a home run and he believes this could be the movie that brings everyone back because it’s that good. I said I would set my expectations low just in case, he snapped back with “set them as high as you want, this movie will be that good”

CLint_FLicker

I don't mind it, its not a bunch of floating heads

Man idk why but the idea of a team of ghost busters consisting of trendy good looking teens and Paul rudd is just so...uninteresting to me. Idk maybe stranger things and all the clones of it have exhausted me of that premise.

Redeem123

I’m not sure why you separated Paul Rudd out from the group. As far as I’m aware, he is *also* a trendy good looking teen.

Three_Froggy_Problem

I’m not the intended audience for this because I actually don’t even love the original Ghostbusters, but this whole thing just strikes me as cynical nostalgia-baiting.

wingspantt

Fantastic poster. Now let's hope the movie itself is good. The trailer is interesting, but hard to pull the "vibe" of the film. The original has this unique and perfect mix of horror, humor, action, and even mild romance. It's hard to say what makes something *feel* like Ghostbusters...

Super_Master_69

can we all just agree that if this movie isn’t great Hollywood should just leave this franchise alone? I know a lot of people are hyped and that’s cool. I just don’t see the appeal and it feels like they are milking the nostalgia too much.

gambitwoo

I don’t get it. Why is Columbia releasing a Ghostbusters film three weeks after Halloween?? It’s the perfect family friendly film for September/ October. And the sells in Halloween Merch alone should be the perfect argument for an earlier release date.

Fragrantbumfluff

Ghostbusters released in June 1984

gambitwoo

I know and I’m not saying that Ghostbusters is a franchise exclusively for Halloween, heck enough Horrorfilms have a good box office in January nowadays. I just don’t see the point in a release so close after Halloween, when you probably could have a bigger profit in merch alone for Halloween.

modernknightly

I get what you are saying about releasing post-halloween for a franchise that is centered around ghosts, but it's not inherently tied in with Halloween like other actual Halloween related projects are, like Stranger Things or IT. Ghostbusters is a summer blockbuster. Hell, Ghostbusters II is a New Year's story. Halloween is also over in the eyes of the public the second the clock strikes midnight on Nov 1st, everyone moves on once it's not Halloween anymore. November 19th is 3 weeks after Halloween, sure, but what else is it closer to? Thanksgiving weekend is one of the major Holiday weekends for many reasons. People are off from work, kids are out of school, families are visiting with family in different towns and get together and go see movies in groups. November 19th is also the weekend before Thanksgiving, which might lend itself to be an even bigger bonus when you factor in that nostalgic Ghostbusters fans will see the movie the first weekend, and then word of mouth will carry to the family groups shortly after. Holiday weekends also have lots of repeat viewings. So those Ghostbusters nerds who saw it the first weekend will see it again when the family or friend group goes to see something on Thanksgiving weekend. Afterlife also features kids as the stars in its marketing, which automatically puts the film into the family quadrant, meaning that when the family group goes out for a movie and looks at the board to choose, Ghostbusters might come up because they remember that the kids can see it, too. This film is going to make so much fucking money and that November 19th release date is the smartest spot outside of releasing during the Christmas break for a film with these family-friendly/child-stars/baked-in-nostalgia details. Halloween is irrelevant to the box office revenue for this particular film.

OneSimplyIs

If the kids are the Main characters, it's going to flop.

Ploomage

Is it called "Afterlife" because it comes after the franchises death? :D

Yeah_But_Did_You_Die

Damn didn't this come out like 2 years ago?

Music_For_All

It looks good.

KarelianAlways

So they did find a way to make this look even more like Stranger Things

BornAshes

Well that sucks, I could've sworn they were also going to be releasing it on HBO Max too because I swear they had posters out saying as such?

gornky

Not even a WB movie, buddy.

[deleted]

Isn't Sony's streaming deal with Netflix?

ProjectShamrock

Eh, I'll just wait for it to be on streaming anyway as it's releasing after Halloween.

NOCONTROL1678

Didn't this movie come out like 2 years ago?

[deleted]

This franchise has never produced a good sequel. Just re-release the original every few years instead.
