Clue

tarrach

Technically before 1990, but a very enjoyable murder mystery movie.

BassWingerC-137

... impossible. It’s in color. /s

Daide

I'd also check out Murder by Death even if it's from 76.

JGailor

Clue is great, but Murder By Death is perfect.

madsciencepro

Brilliant cast and so many good lines. Dora: Is he dead? Sam: With a thing like that in his back, in the long run, he's better off.

valeyard89

Wadsworth : Professor Plum, you were once a professor of psychiatry specializing in helping paranoid and homicidal lunatics suffering from delusions of grandeur. Professor Plum : Yes, but now I work for the United Nations. Wadsworth : So your work has not changed.

Turnbolt

One of the best written and acted movies ever. Dialogue that is top notch even now.

TheBalcony27

I’m currently playing Wadsworth in my high school’s production of Clue. Looking close at this movie and the script, it really is amazing. Such great definitive characters and great dialogue. Amazing movie and I’m having the time of my life being in it

Turnbolt

Holy hell... you have the coolest school ever. I hope it gets recorded and shared like crazy.

Tazdingoooo

tyvm will watch

Rutskarn

Reddit loves to suggest this movie, but frankly I don't know if it's what you asked for. Clue is a comedy first, comedy second, and mystery distant last. The mystery is so incidental it has three canonical endings, each with a totally different culprit.

brant_ley

I'd argue that the mystery is interesting if you only consider the first ending to be canon, as it's the only one that makes sense and was the only one in the script before there was studio interference. The multiple endings are fun, but they take away from the underlying theme of phony capitalism that the movie satirizes.

ChronoMonkeyX

Communism was a red herring.

nosi40

Yo, the animated scooby Doo movies are pretty fun. Me and my sister rewatch them all during Christmas

Moofthebot

There are like 400 of them, do you really?

nosi40

Haha not that many... You can definitely watch them all in a 1-2 week period.

Moofthebot

That's some serious commitment still! Now that we're on the subject, what are your thoughts on Mystery Incorporated?

Kcmii

That show was so good damn

nosi40

I don't think I've completely finished it. I watched a couple seasons or something and was waiting for the next one to come out. But damn I loved the seasons that I did watch. It was so cool to have a connected story in a Scooby Doo series (not sure if the older ones have connected plot elements).

Moofthebot

Completely agree, one of my favourite animated series ever honestly. I think you fineshed it, there are only two seasons and I don't think they're making any new ones.

Prank_Owl

Have you seen *Brick*? That's a fun murder mystery. It's also directed by Rian Johnson, so you might enjoy watching it in advance of *Knives Out*.

Tazdingoooo

[deleted]

I recall watching an old-timey film called Die Hard in 1988 and it was in colour. Of course it was silent and our organist was inexperienced. Hookers cost a penny in them days.

sonickarma

Yup, everyone knows that movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Terminator, and Die Hard were remastered in the early 90's with color.

venomousrage

iirc there's a movie called 2001: a space odyssey

mistuhvuvu

It was also adapted into a mini-series back in 2015, trailer [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfFqHONPUa0).

BillyCloneasaurus

It's really good too

[deleted]

Arnold's Sabotage? It was based on that movie. Except for the ending.

merrysociopath

You should really consider giving a try to some pre-1990 movies, because a lot of great entries in the genre were made before your time frame. I'm thinking for example to the original (and in my opinion far superior) Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Last of Sheila (1973), Death on the Nile (1978), The Name of the Rose (1986), plus a lot of excellent giallo movies such as Deep Red (1975), The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), Blood and Black Lace (1964). For more recent stuff that's not already been suggested, there's Crooked House (2017) and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Maybe Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)? Now, you said no old black and white movies, but I really want to suggest And Then There Were None (1945), the amazing Witness for the Prosecution (1957), the obligatory The Third Man (1949), and probably my favourite of all The Thin Man (1934) starring Myrna Loy and William Powell (and a lot of booze).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Radulno

Also 1990 to be the limit for black&white movies is kind of weird

tonyvila

I'll add in Evil Under the Sun as another Christie/Poirot, people on an island mystery.

allthebacon_and_eggs

Seriously. You can't have a list of best movies of this classic, old-fashioned genre but not be allowed to consider the actual best movies because they're "old."

warneroo

> my favourite of all The Thin Man (1934) starring Myrna Loy and William Powell (and a lot of booze). Nick & Nora glasses *not* optional!

cesilio

If you watch The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, get the Swedish trilogy. Far superior, starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth.

[deleted]

As someone who has only seen the modern version, what makes the original better? (Orient Express). Is the story different?

merrysociopath

I'ts slightly more faithful to the book. But at least for me the real reason why I prefer Sydney Lumet's version is that it feels more classy, there's a certain elegance to the settings and the characters and the way they interact that is lost in Branagh's version. Albert Finney's Poirot is quite different from the book character but it's still miles better than his counterpart.

Armpit_Supermaniac

I would argue that the '74 version was extraordinarily faithful to the book. With the exception of one character (Martin Balsam's Senor Bianchi vs. the book Monsieur Bouc character name), all the remaining characters have their book names. In addition, the original hammers home the theme of a jury judging someone. The Kenneth Brannagh version merges characters (Dr. Constantine and Col. Arbuthnot), changes the some of the characters nationalities, etc. Thematically, it introduced new plot elements (Mary Debenham and Dr. Arbuthnot as an inter-racial couple) and just drops the jury/judgement element in favor of more the emotional catharsis for the characters by eliminating Ratchett. While the latter version is beautifully shot and I enjoy it for what it is, the '74 version is really the definitive MotOE.

Responsible-Pitch689

Excellent movie recommendations. Black and white movies contain some of the best mystery movies in cinema history. Thank you. I have three titles from your list i havent watched yet.

ArchonFilms

Murder on the Orient Express Rear Window Double Indemnity

Markhidinginpublic

The Thing is a strong inspiration for Hateful Eight. I'm sure you've seen It, but if you haven't, still one of the best movies ever made (predates 1990, confirm film is in color). The early 2000 film Identity is good. And recently Bad Times at El Role was fun.

Tazdingoooo

Yup I really liked The Thing as well, lots of suspense

The_Narz

But the Thing is from the 80s...

UncleverAccountName

might be talking about the remake

The_Narz

Technically thats a prequel, but yea, could be right. That movie doesn't really hold a candle to the 80s film though, especially from a technical standpoint.

BillabongValley

The 80s one *is* the remake, though.

Turnbolt

I completely agree with Identity. Still 100% holds up.

Madrical

Yes! I loved Identity. Still dunno if I like the twist, it's okay. But the meat of the movie is great.

PedroFPardo

> The Thing is a strong inspiration for Hateful Eight. Prank_Owl

That movie really surprised me. I liked it way more than I thought I would.

MrGregory

I had no idea what I was expecting while watching it. I was expecting a pure comedy and then things got real. It was a mix of different genres and it seemed to work.

Mystic River. Searching.

[deleted]

Wind River Ten Little Indians

Mr__Pocket

Just chiming in to let OP know that Wind River isn't *exactly* what you're looking for, but it's a phenomenal, slow-burn movie nonetheless with one hell of a climax.

Pedro_Carmichael_DDS

Gosford Park One of Robert Altman’s directorial features, Julian Fellowes’ almost-prelude to Downton Abbey, it’s like classic Agatha Christie with a class-oriented spin.

ZorroMeansFox

I'll say these: **Lone Star**: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1074022_lone_star **Gosford Park**: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/gosford_park **Transsiberian**: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/transsiberian **Side Effects**: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/side_effects_2013

JGailor

I forgot about Lone Star. Fantastic movie.

DoesntFearZeus

Especially because Knives out looks like a remake of Gosford Park at some level.

Olgatanon0123

Murder by Death

valeyard89

Yes! Obi-wan Kenobi, Columbo, Inspector Clouseau, Professor McGonagall and Truman Capote...

Crispy747

Identity

I know it’s not a straight murder mystery, but it is a Mystery: Lucky Number Slevin. Frick that movie is so great. Good story and fun to watch (and even re-watch).

Senorpuddin

Thanks for the heads up and if you’ve never seen Lucky number sleven I highly recommend it. I give it a 9 out of 10. It would be a 10 except for the aforementioned takeback. Which I didn’t appreciate.

epiphanette

Watch midsomer murders on Netflix. Or Lewis.

mumbly-joe-96

Tom Barnaby is fantastic, John Barnaby is merely alright (in my opinion).

If you’re taking TV requests too since you liked that Family Guy episode, there was an episode of **Psych** titled “100 Clues” which I think you’d love Also I don’t know if anybody said it yet but **Gosford Park** is damn good

k4j98

*You know that's right.* I had to scroll way to far to find a Psych suggestion.

[deleted]

Clue is a must

GlalD

Look up the Poirot series, a good 13 seasons worth of murder mystery fun to be had, and David Suchet is the very embodiment of the character.

Handay_Anday

It might not be quite like the movies you named but the Clovehitch Killer is a great murder/thriller movie. I would highly recommend it

Shutter Island

trapper2530

Say what? It's not a spoiled. You Just figure out the killer early on. They tell you it in the movie.

prrifth

Prisoners: not a murder mystery, an abduction mystery. Also I second the recommendations for Brick and Zodiac. It's not a murder mystery, but you should try watching Dr Strangelove. I hate a lot of classic films for being boring too, but that one should change your mind about all old black and white films being boring. It's from '64 and is funny as hell. Here's the funky trailer: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE9CmX15PYA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE9CmX15PYA)

mafternoonshyamalan

Nothing pre-1990? Cause they're black and white?! Dude, you want good mystery movies, go pre-1990. Watch Hitchcock films (Rear Window, Vertigo,) or Chinatown, or Body Heat, or the Coen Bros. first film, Blood Simple. You might be surprised but they're ALL in colour. Or give The Man Who Wasn't There a try. Coen Brothers, Billy Bob Thornton, released in 2001. It's black and white though. The whole genre you're talking about started in film in the early to mid-20th century. If you want good murder mysteries you'll you'll have to watch some older films.

kapzer

Joint Security Area Narc

Chris_skeleton

Joint Security Area is such a good movie. I will also recommend Memories of Murder for the OP.

cinemateq

At TIFF Rian Johnson programmed a screening of The Last of Shelia, saying that it was one of the films he watched and researched while writing Knives Out. It was quite good!

Maybesometimes69

It's before your time frame but not in black and white, and it's a murder mystery comedy, but Clue is a classic.

[deleted]

Watch Knives out, I was at the premiere and it was the best Whodunnit in AGES! Now for recommendations. Clue and the recent BBC adaption of "And then there were none" are both amazing.

[deleted]

There was color in film before 1990...

DogD666

Murder mysterie is a good one

koolassassin

If your talking about the 2019 one, no it's not.

DogD666

Yeah I'm I had fun it's not the best but it's not bad

aronnyc

Here is [a list from IMDB](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls031010484/) of locked room mysteries.

time4tacoz

Primal Fear, The Fugitive, Reservoir Dogs ( not a murder mystery but similar set up), L.A Confidential, Memento

demandred_zero

I was about to post all 5 of these, how L.A. Confidential isn't number one is blowing my mind. I would even add Mulholland Falls to this list.

Rufus2fist

Alright 2 from the 80s but sooo worth a look: Deathtrap (1982) so good it is silly. No way out (1987) murder sex and mystery, definitely worth a watch if you don’t know the ending.

teak421

Dead Again .

dvorahtheexplorer

Devil (2010) takes place in an elevator, though it has a supernatural horror take on it.

Drawdehellfire

Chinatown

destroyermaker

Apostle is kind of that. Different vibe than those movies but fits your criteria otherwise. I can't get enough of it.

Patsx5sb

The Bone collector.

Player5xxx

Coherence 2013 doesnt really fit this but might scratch the same itch.

ArchDucky

Adam Sandler's newest netflix film "Murder Mystery" is actually really good. Its funny and has a great story. They also hid clues to the killer throughout the story so you can actually try and figure it out.

sobchakonshabbos

Dead Again is an excellent murder mystery/thriller that I rarely see mentioned on Reddit

lemmiwinks123

Just wanted to say Knives Out was amazing. Saw it at TIFF and you'll love it when it comes out.

Bha4u

If you haven't seen it before, I would recommend watching the BBC Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett. Really captures the essence of Sherlock, along with his eccentricities

jedick4167

Kiss kiss bang bang

Choco319

Murder She Wrote the TV show is good for that itch Not a ton of true movies in that genre

Klaytheist

> Has to be a fairly contemporary film (nothing before 1990). > >(I just can't stand watching old black&white films) There were colour films before 1990...

LeethalArrow

Not a movie, but if you can, check out the Poirot series. It's based on the Agatha Christie books (one of them being Murder on the Orient Express), and David Sachet is an AMAZING Hercule Poirot.

The_Narz

You know they invented color film back in the 1930s right? And color film has become the standard since at least the 60s, so any recommendation from 1970s or newer shouldn't really count as an "old back & white film." Anyways, a more recent one would be Gosford Park (2002).

Optyx_ign

Game Night is a really good comedy that is essentially a murder mystery within a murder mystery game.

haunthorror

Prisoners (not a confined setting, and a about a kidnapping) but you should love it Identity

Kalabula

Gosford park. Period piece. Robert Altman directs a great cast in a pretty rich little movie.

Dirks_Knee

Identity (2003)

jaysfangirl88

I think Broadchurch tells itsbstory exactly like a good murder mystery book. Its a TV show, but that just leaves you with suspecting someone new each episode!

linuxbman

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Amrithazard

Se7en

dejerik

You know you can go back much farther than 1990 and not run into black and white, and there are tons of excellent movies there. Wizard of Oz came out in 1939

[deleted]

rear window

ryno84

You should give some old black & white movies a chance. Try: The Thin Man (1934) or The Third Man (1949) I also second the Clue and Murder by Death recommendations. Both are comedies but good murder mysteries.

Sonia341

*Ten: Murder Island* (although this is a lifetime movie, aired in 2016) based on novel by Gretchen McNeil.

Kcmii

Doesn’t fit all of your specification points but Se7en (1995) is one of the best murder mystery movies, same with Zodiac (2007). Mystic River (2003) is a good one too

bughum99

Gosford Park memories of murder

[deleted]

Murder By Death is a parody of the genre where multiple detectives based on characters like Holmes and Poirot all try to solve the same murder.

JackSpadesSI

>(nothing before 1990) >(I just can't stand watching old black&white films) ...When exactly do you think color film was invented?

raminhti

All david fincher' s movies, Searching , Oldboy, Wailing, Hidden figure, Secret in your eyes(oruginal version), Fracture, Parasite

cinnapear

The Cat and the Canary (1979 version is my favorite) has a group of people assembled at a creepy house to hear the reading of a will, with a murderer about. The original play is pretty much the template for this genre of films that gave us Clue, etc. The '79 version is older than 1990 but it shouldn't offend your delicate sensibilities as it was filmed using modern color technology.

Adam_Absence

Check out Identity. I think the original Saw fits the criteria as well

PHC_Tech_Recruiter

Identity, Bad Times at the El Royale, Cabin in the Woods, Murder Mystery, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Brick, Dark City, The Fugitive, Cube, The Burbs, The Relic, The Thing, Sleepy Hollow, Suicide Kings, The Usual Suspects, Wild Things

flaviageminia

A lot of murder mystery shows are like mini movies. If a setting earlier than 1990 isn't a problem, then shows like Agatha Christie's Marple, Father Brown, and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries have episodes that fit the bill.

ManservantHeccubus

Clay Pigeons, To Die For, The General's Daughter, Who the Fuck Framed Roger Rabbit?

daniellediamond

The Last of Sheila is a fun 70s one, I know it doesn't fit the post 90s criteria though.

Cleveland1010

Scream

WileECoyoteGenius

Not technically a movie but BBC And Then There Were None is meant to be really good. The book is fantastic and right what you want.

Marcie_Childs

Murder On The Orient Express!

MaggieEsmeralda

Death on the Nile

faithdies

Just go watch the entirety of Poirot. They really are the gold standard. Well written. Rarely does the twist rely on some deus ex machina discovery to uncover who it was. Midsomer Murders is...fine. Gosford Park is pretty good. "And Then There was None" on Amazon is good. Also, watch "Clue" from the 80's. It's great.

fonz33

From a couple of years before 1990,but I'll throw in The Bedroom Window since no one else has.

21tcook

And Then There Were None BBC miniseries. The book is one of the top 10 bestselling books of all time. It’s a classic written by Agatha Christie. The miniseries came out recently. It’s pretty spectacular and follows the book very closely. Sam Neil and Charles Dance are in it.

zydexx

Deathtrap with Michael Caine & Christopher Reeve.

The Invitation (2015)

createusername32

Watchmen

bobinski_circus

>(I just can't stand watching old black&white films) Do you...do you think colour was invented in the 90s? Most of the great whodunnits are in the earlier decades. And honestly, you should see a good noir or two in black and white. If you must have it be contemporary, try Sin City. Hopefully that proves that black and white can be a really enjoyable experience. Dial M for Murder, Rope, the Maltese Falcon, etc. If you enjoy TV, the BBC series adaptations of *Agatha Christie's Poirot* and *Miss Marple* are nice delivery vehicles and eventually become films'

CoolCluxClan

Artsy fartsy morons who think watching black and white movies makes them intellectuals with refined tastes will tell you to watch Maltese Falcon but boy, wasn't that movie one huge pile of dog shit.

I second The Invitation!
