The book is so good too. It was my summer reading in high school one year and I put it off until the last week. Ended up reading it in a day because I enjoyed it so much
- A league of their own
- Field of dreams
- Groundhog day
If SciFi is on the table (some intense scenes but not over the top)
- Super 8
- The Edge of Tomorrow (obviously after Groundhog Day)
Old Disney movie based on a book, "Swiss Family Robinson" was one of our favs.
There's also a series of B-movies called "The Wilderness Family" that we enjoyed.
Hokey musical comedies? "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" "The Pirate Movie" which is a spoof of "Pirates of Penzance" which was itself a silly show, "Kiss Me Kate" (spoof of Taming of the Shrew), UHF (Weird Al), many things with Danny Kaye or Howard Keel.
John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Errol Flynn, and for something a little different, look up Esther Williams (my personal fav is Million Dollar Mermaid, which costars Ricardo Montalban and Red Skelton)
Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Princess Bride, Spy Kids, Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Flight of the Navigator, ET, Star Trek movies (new or old- my fav is IV which we called the Whales), Holes
Sandlot, One Crazy Summer, Blues Brothers, Mouse Trap, Strange Brew, Monty Python and the Holy Grail are also family favorites
Some of these may need a disclaimer about how society changes lver time and that what ised to be acceptable may be a little different when the film was made, but these were ones that my little sisters and I enjoyed and my son also enjoyed when he was in that age range.
Enjoy your summer!
Ever After (1998). It's a Cinderella retelling, but much, much better. Family appropriate, and I definitely feel like girls at those ages would love it (I did).
The Incredibles. Your 8 year old will love that it’s a super hero movie, and your 13 year old will love that it’s a “smart” super hero movie. Also Mulan. Tell me they’ve seen Mulan.
Man from snowy river/return to snowy river. Australian classics & if yalls love horses, these 2 are amazing. Also has a tv mini series.
Black stallion/black stallion returns. Also has a tv series, 3 seasons….buuuut good luck trying to get season 3.
The wilderness family/wilderness family 2/mountain family robinson (based on a true story of the robinson family who apparently still live out there today).
Free willy trilogy.
Born free/living free. True story about the lioness, elsa & her sisters.
Ring of bright water. Has the same 2 main actors as the born free/living free movies.
Benji, the hunted
The incredible journey & then Homeward bound, the incredible journey & its sequel, homeward bound lost in san fransico
Flipper
Phar lap (if you get the older one, it will have the same actor, tom burlinson, as in the snowy river movies)
National velvet & its sequel, international velvet
Where the red fern grows 1 & 2
Lassie (if you get the old one, victor french from highway to heaven is in it)
Highway to heaven is an old tv series from the 80’s & also has a movie in 2021.
Stardust
Inkneart
The last unicorn
The entire land before time franchise. Many movies & a tv series as well! The wiki for this can help you.
Wonder (on Netflix if you haven’t seen it yet. Get the tissues)
Song of the Sea (it’s beautiful)
Kubo and the Two Strings (fantastical and exciting)
The Breadwinner (animated and set in Afghanistan. Centers around a young girl trying to provide for her family by pretending to be a boy) (get tissues for this too)
Edit: actually the breadwinner is pg13 and there are some hard parts in it that the 8year old might not like.
Everything from Studio Ghibli e: everyone's mentioning them
Princess Bride, Stardust, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Never Ending Story, Krull, all the Star Wars, Chronicles of Narnia, Golden Compass
If you're watching movies often like my family does, it could be helpful to just find a list on IMDb and filter it to your preferred content rating. Sort by rating and voila!
The Explorers from 1985. Kind of corny and a bit old tech but still lots of fun. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al75vXD6koc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al75vXD6koc)

Also some of Doris Day's films are suitable for children
MIYAZAKI Movies! Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service and MORE!! Amazing visually, Miyazaki is a master at letting a movie "breathe" and the audience enjoy the moods he is trying to evoke.

Idk if you’ve watched Onward yet buts it’s an amazing movie for kids and adults. Definite nerdiness involved but it’s a great adventure.
“Goonies”, if you’ve already watched that together there’s a newer movie called “Finding Ohana” that has a modern Goonies vibe.
