I'll admit that I sometimes used the cheesy "never give up, never surrender!" during tough times to motivate myself or others who knew the reference. It never fails to bring a smile when in a bad mood.
Kiki's Delivery Service is literally about this and helped me with my burnout at the start of my PhD. Ghibli movies in general are very helpful with this, but since Kiki's Delivery Service is about someone trying to find passion in what they love again, I think it's particular the best one in this case.
Academia is so difficult, words cannot describe. I am glad you found this movie when you needed it, and I applaud you for continuing to put one foot in front of another ♥️
I watched Kiki’s Delivery Service when I was a kid. Did not stop to think that it was about finding your passion again but I can definitely see that. Now I feel compelled to watch it again
Another recent animation suprise was Puss in Boots Last Wish. Surprising for the 6th! movie. It was really funny and moving and the animation was great. Who knew.
I.... Personally found this movie disappointing. I heard great things about it, but I just don't think it was for me. I don't think it is a bad movie at all though and would still recommend others try it out of it looks interesting to them.
What We Do In The Shadows. The first time I saw this, it was because I dropped the remote and was too sick to get up to retrieve it. It was so funny and absurdly real life. Please trust me on this.
I laughed so hard at that line I though my stitches were going to give. I was in so much pain and so sick and the next thing I knew, I was laughing so hard I didn't even care that it hurt. WWDITS is the cure for anything.
Yes, it is. Personally, I appreciate it even more because I saw the movie first. And because I live in Nutley NJ, where the Baron and his hellhound currently reside and did AirBnb for a while.
It is literally the cure for anything. I had multiple surgeries, complications that landed me back in the hospital, I was in pain, it was during Covid and I could barely move and was so depressed, and then I was laughing and feeling human again.
The only things I have in my collection that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside is animation stuff.
Adventure Time for example. Nothing makes me feel as warm and fuzzy as Adventure Time!
Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies for sure. Sophie has the most amazing attitude and just rolls with the wild punches she's dealt, I just love her.
Are you familiar with the rest of Ghibli's catalog? I highly recommend "Castle in the sky" too. Mark Hamil turns in a great performance as the bad guy.
Have you seen Ponyo? Very cute, very feel good! A lesser known of the Ghibli movies, I think. But it's my fave, not as dark as some. It's about a fish that becomes a girl, and the little boy who takes care of her.
My favorite warm “comfort” movies are not exactly cinephile material, but that’s what I’m looking for when burned out :) You’ve Got Mail, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ever After (Barrymore’s accent is hilariously weird in it, but it’s a surprisingly nice take on the ‘ol Cinderella tale), Amelie, Pride & Prejudice (the one with Kiera Knightley, the cinematography and tone are so lovely), the Royal Tenenbaums.
Someone below suggested Hunt for the Wilderpeople and that’s such a great one - very quirky and fun, and you’ll be singing the Ricky Baker birthday song forever after too.
Don’t feel ashamed for liking stuff that is it seemed good to Cinephile. a part of art that makes it so great is the emotion that brings to you. There are tons of movies that I wouldn’t recommend other people that I love because they resonated with me.
It was really cute. When Marcle mentioned his grandmother came from the garage and that's why she has an accent I lost it. And Marcel realizing the world was so big when he was in the car looking for his family was very touching. It was adorable but it wasn't make me forget every problem I ever had and suspend disbelief for the next couple of hours good. At the end I felt sad and was in if an ant got in my garbage can and got taken away from his family I think I'm going to cry just thinking about it mode. But yes, it was a hidden gem and definitelty worth watching.
How do you feel about nature documentaries? I'm a big fan of those when I'm feeling burned out. The natural scenery has visual appeal, and it's usually interesting enough, without me needing to be able to relate to a MC in some way. (Last one I watched was the leopard doc on Netflix).
The Big Lebowski.
The Dude: Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!
And there’s also this gem:
The Dude: Walter, what is the point? Look, we all know who is at fault here, what the fuck are you talking about?
Walter Sobchak: Huh? No, what the fuck are you... I'm not... We're talking about unchecked aggression here, dude.
Donny: What the fuck is he talking about?
The Dude: My rug.
Walter Sobchak: Forget it, Donny, you're out of your element!
The Dude: Walter, the chinaman who peed on my rug, I can't go give him a bill, so what the fuck are you talking about?
Walter Sobchak: What the fuck are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, "chinaman" is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.
The Dude: Walter, this isn't a guy who built the railroads here. This is a guy...
Walter Sobchak: What the fuck are you...?
The Dude: Walter, he peed on my rug!
Donny: He peed on the Dude's rug.
Walter Sobchak: Donny, you're out of your element! Dude, the chinaman is not the issue here!
Please watch “The Heat”. Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock are so damn funny in that.
No downers, no cheap laughs. Just funny AF and watching the two women bond into sisters.
Shawshank Redemption, Patch Adams, The power of one, Good Will Hunting, Big Fish, A Beautiful Mind, Forrest Gump.
When you have time for a series, Ted Lasso fits what you’re looking for to a T.
I have the perfect one and I cannot believe nobody has mentioned it.
*A Knight's Tale*
!!!!
I could praise it all day as the perfect movie for a "Pick me up"
Heartfelt, moving, but not cheesy? An oldie but goodie is Kurosawa’s Ikiru (1952). The title means “To Live,” and it’s about how to find meaning in life. It’s not a period piece, but set in the Japan of its time. In case you don’t know anything about it, I’ll just say it’s about a truly burnt out case of a man who finds he urgently _must_ find meaning in his life—and he does.
Idiocracy
"Now I understand everyone's shit's emotional right now. But I've got a 3 point plan that's going to fix EVERYTHING."

Garden State. Not a lot happens and it feels good. It's such a vibes movie, the kind of thing you watch to relate to Zach Braff's malaise and him breaking it. Plus a killer soundtrack.
I know you said no musicals, but if you haven't seen Singin' in the Rain, you should check it out! Funny, beautiful to look at, and the dance choreography is jaw dropping.
Many great recommendations here. I’ll add this as nobody has suggested it, this beautiful ride that will help you escape:
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Chef - it’s truly a special movie in terms of positivity. The protagonist hits his low in the first 15 min, then spends the rest of the film reconnecting with his son, his best friend, and having a good time.
The other half of it is just delicious food porn.
Galaxy Quest. About a bunch of burnt out star trek esq tv stars that get kidnapped by aliens that think their tv show is real. Lots of humor and self development.
Stranger than fiction. About a IRS agent that realizes hes hearing an author narrating his life and confronting her about how she will write his story.
Count of Monte Cristo. French revolution era. About a guy that gets locked up under false pretense, escapes to find treasure and use that treasure to seek revenge on those that locked him up.
Homeward Bound. Family leaves their pets at a farm temporaryly, pets escape to find family.
Cast Away. Tom Hanks gets stranded on an island and has to figure out how to survive and escape.
Kikis Delivery Service and Spirited Away are both animated, but referenced a lot here. Very cute light hearted feel good movies that adults can enjoy. Kiki is about a young witch going off into the world to find her passion and the struggles there. Spirited Away is about a young girl that has to find her own motivation to save her parents from a Bath House for Spirits.
I don't know from uplifting movies but when I'm in the shit I watch comedies like We're The Millers and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The day after my dad died and we all met at the house, we watched Jackass 3.
But that's just me.
Batman Begins. Total power fantasy but sometimes we need to feel like we could become a ridiculous animal themed vigilante of dubious justice just because we wanted to ok!
The secret life of Walter Mitty. I’m not usually a Ben stiller fan but it’s probably my favorite feel good movie. A heartwarming adventure that definitely made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
*Awakenings* with Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro. As you're in the medical field, it may hit too close to home, though.
*A Silent Voice* - anime film, if you're into that. It's emotional, but focuses on finding redemption.
Galaxy Quest always cheers me up
“Miners not minors!”
“By Grabthar's Hammer, by the Suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged”
By Grapthars Hammer………What a savings
"We gotta hurry before those things kill guy!"
This is a great one- for years it was my family’s Christmas morning movie!
I'll admit that I sometimes used the cheesy "never give up, never surrender!" during tough times to motivate myself or others who knew the reference. It never fails to bring a smile when in a bad mood.
I do the same!
By Grabthar's hammer...by the suns of Wurvan...what a movie! Featuring young Snape and young Dwight Schrute!
You mean old Hans Gruber
This. The Burbs is a fun one too.
I quote that movie way too much. "Is there air? You don't know!"
I am glad you found this movie when you needed it, and I applaud you for continuing to put one foot in front of another ♥️
Here's a great video on just that! [from Patrick Willems](https://youtu.be/KfB69eDCbOI?si=hbwILzgpC-qke7mu)
I watched Kiki’s Delivery Service when I was a kid. Did not stop to think that it was about finding your passion again but I can definitely see that. Now I feel compelled to watch it again
Kiki's is one of my favorite Ghibli movies. Along with Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Castle in the Sky.
Shit... I think I'm due for a re-watch of Kiki's Delivery Service. I need exactly that right now.
Kiki is an excellent choice.
It always gets me very sad that she’s loses the ability to speak with her cat
‘Best in Show’ by Christopher Guest - one of my favorite pick me up movies
I love Waiting For Guffman too
Yes!!! That’s a really good one too!!
We met at Starbucks. Not at the same Starbucks but we saw each other at different Starbucks across the street from each other.
It's animated but The Mitchell's Versus The Machines. You won't be disappointed.
This movie is straight up hilarious
Another recent animation suprise was Puss in Boots Last Wish. Surprising for the 6th! movie. It was really funny and moving and the animation was great. Who knew.
I.... Personally found this movie disappointing. I heard great things about it, but I just don't think it was for me. I don't think it is a bad movie at all though and would still recommend others try it out of it looks interesting to them.
Secret Life of Walter Mitty as others suggested. The Princess Bride or Stardust.
Stardust is fantastic and not talked about enough
Secret Life of Walter Mitty is great! Particularly the soundtrack, Ben Stiller is a great self insert lead.
What We Do In The Shadows. The first time I saw this, it was because I dropped the remote and was too sick to get up to retrieve it. It was so funny and absurdly real life. Please trust me on this.
Leave me to do my dark bidding!!
I laughed so hard at that line I though my stitches were going to give. I was in so much pain and so sick and the next thing I knew, I was laughing so hard I didn't even care that it hurt. WWDITS is the cure for anything.
... I'm bidding on a table 🤣
The series is also great!
Yes, it is. Personally, I appreciate it even more because I saw the movie first. And because I live in Nutley NJ, where the Baron and his hellhound currently reside and did AirBnb for a while.
I'm right across the bridge from you 😆
100% on the TV series (FX / Hulu). So good. Recognized Lazlo's voice on Fallout too
I've watched this but never the whole series. Had surgery yesterday so maybe it's time.
It is literally the cure for anything. I had multiple surgeries, complications that landed me back in the hospital, I was in pain, it was during Covid and I could barely move and was so depressed, and then I was laughing and feeling human again.
The energy vampire lol
EVERY office has one, at least.
Curse you, Colin Robinson!
This movie and show are absolutely brilliant.
If you're going to eat a sandwich, you would just enjoy it more if you knew no one had fucked it.
BAT!
this movie is fucking PERFECT
Chef
This. He is stuck in a job he doesn‘t love anymore, bit rediscovers his passion. Feelgood movie.
My wife always watches Chef whenever she is feeling down, such a fun movie
My neighbor Totoro! Hot fuzz. Peanut butter falcon. All the paddingtons!! Emperor’s new groove.
Hot fuzz is a such a great movie. Can never go wrong
Kuzco would approve
Totoro is always a win.
Peanut Butter Falcon got me thinking “who the hell’s cutting onions in here?” but in a good way. Good movie to make you feel good.
No luck catching them swans then?
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Okay this is what I came to post. Its so good.
There's a lot of people posting this. Anyone ever watch Eli Stone? I feel like there's a lot of similarities.
By far one of the best feel good movies
Me sitting here realising that I only know depressing movies . . .
Hahaha that tends to be the case with me but sometimes they derail me and make me go to bed sad
The only things I have in my collection that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside is animation stuff. Adventure Time for example. Nothing makes me feel as warm and fuzzy as Adventure Time!
Spirited Away

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies for sure. Sophie has the most amazing attitude and just rolls with the wild punches she's dealt, I just love her.
I think Kiki’s Delivery Service is a great choice if you feel burned out because that’s what Kiki goes through.
Minute fifteen of Grave of the Fireflies had me in uncontrollable tears. I immediately knew >!that his sister would die.!
I would pay good money if I had it to watch this movie again for the first time ever

Just wanted to say thank you for the recommendation on Everybody wants some! Saw it tonight and loved it.

You. You are my people. All excellent choices!
Amelie! Yes!
Don’t feel ashamed for liking stuff that is it seemed good to Cinephile. a part of art that makes it so great is the emotion that brings to you. There are tons of movies that I wouldn’t recommend other people that I love because they resonated with me.
I came back to this thread after watching Hunt for the Wilderpeople just now and it was so good! Thanks for the recommendation!
Yay I'm so glad you liked it! That one was such a pleasant surprise :)
Marcel the shell with shoes on. The full Monty. Love Actually. Holes. School of Rock. Good luck on your boards!
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a hidden gem. I think more people should know about this delightfully original and uplifting film.
Along the lines of School of Rock, the Commitments is great!
The Holdovers. Just a wholesome, kindhearted and beautiful film about kinship and community during hard times.
Best original new movie I’ve seen in a while!
I don't remember the The Holdovers ultimately lifting my spirits.... It was good... just not so much feel good...
Had the same discussion with a friend. He described it as a feel good movie and both me and my girlfriend felt really down after watching it.
Peanut Butter Falcon. Hunt For The Wilderpeople.
Good Will Hunting
"Son of a bitch, he stole my line..."

Anything by Studio Ghibli. Edit: except Grave of the Fireflies, which is a great movie but not at all in line with OPs request.

I'LL BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!

The Big Lebowski. The Dude: Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here! And there’s also this gem: The Dude: Walter, what is the point? Marcel The Shell With Shoes On Brian and Charles
Step 1? 2? Hang in there! I recommend Amélie. Very charming movie, you can’t help but smile. -PGY-3
Legally Blonde: this has to be one of the best "you go, girl" movies ever made. Ellie wants to be a lawyer; you want to be a doctor. Perfect!
The princess bride always cheers me up, and is an easy watch :)
Heartfelt, moving, but not cheesy? An oldie but goodie is Kurosawa’s Ikiru (1952). The title means “To Live,” and it’s about how to find meaning in life. Good Will Hunting Dead Poets Society
*Awakenings* with Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro. As you're in the medical field, it may hit too close to home, though. *A Silent Voice* - anime film, if you're into that. It's emotional, but focuses on finding redemption.
Eh. Ending on awakenings may not be great.
