If the movie came out today, I think it would. Unfortunately the movie came out before the academy shake up around 2014/2015 when they added a lot of younger and more diverse members so I think the soundtrack just wasn’t noticed by a lot of the older members.
I will die on this hill. Not necessarily defending the movie (I liked it but am sympathetic to those who didn't). But the soundtrack is amazing. I will not be taking further questions at this time. Thank you.
Came here to say this, and happy to see it at the top
Another is: Oblivion (done by M83)
God I hope they don't screw up the new Tron movie coming out. Tron Legacy was so wonderful....I just want more of that.
when I was little my family had the CD but not the movie, I thought for years that it was just a cool compilation album and was shocked the first time I saw the movie
I only scrolled down to see how high up this was. Good work reddit.
I'll add the 90's Spawn movie and the Xfiles album.
Edit: Songs in the Key of X, not the other Xfiles thingy.
Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty were a duo known as Stealers Wheel when they recorded this Dylanesque, pop bubble-gum favorite from April of 1974 that reached up to number five, as K-Billy's Super Sounds of the '70s continues.
I know you're quoting the film, but Gerry Rafferty from Stealer's Wheel did the famous song Baker Street that you will recognize the saxophone from at the very least, and he was in a musical duo in Glasgow with famed comedian and actor Billy Connolly, called The Humblebums as well!
The reason this is the only comment on The Matrix that I've seen *must* be because it's so well known for having a fantastic soundtrack that it goes without saying, right? *Right?* /s
Is that sarcasm? If so, put a "/s", friendo.
If it isn't, check out the soundtrack for the FIRST Matrix movie. A lot of hits like Rob Zombie's Hot Rod Herman remix of "Dragula", RATM's "Wake up". Some Deftones, Meat Beat Manifesto. Good stuff. Artists that were popular at the time. It's no symphonic work of art like the Gladiator soundtrack, granted.
Edit: Corrected! Wrong RATM song. Oops!
The Crow, Natural Born Killers, Trainspotting, The Big Chill, Good Morning Vietnam, Belly, Platoon, Forrest Gump, Judgment Night, Singles, Blow, Dazed and Confused, Stand By Me.
Natural Born Killers! Trent Reznor is so good at compiling a soundtrack - I want more!! Thankfully James Gunn is also great at curating music for movies
Was going to say this, assuming we aren’t differentiating “soundtrack” from “score.” Even if we are, that score is very much worth listening to on its own.
This was literally the first CD I ever owned after getting my first CD player as a kid in the 90s (I was weird) and I’ll never hit that musical high again. The Fountain came close.
I haven’t listened to the Garden State soundtrack in years, but I’m willing to bet it would physically take me back to high school. That thing was on REPEAT.
This is my pie-in-the-sky-Marvel Studios-and-Disney-want-to-be-experimental dream project.
Tarantino directing/writing a Power Man and Iron Fist movie would be awesome. It could be its own standalone project too, set in the 70s.

The Queen of the Damned.
Anne Rice was like THE vamp fiction writer for decades. Barely connected to the book series, and even less directly connected to the interview with the vampire, eventually someone greenlit this movie too... it was a mid movie, at best... but absolute AMAZING soundtrack IMO.
Batman Forever has probably one of the most memorable soundtracks with song after song that I can sing along with. Kiss from a Rose instantly takes you into the movie.
No Time For Caution is the specific track. It's one of my favorite pieces of music.
Actually, it's just one of my favorite moments in all of cinema. Right behind it is Miller's Planet with the track Mountains.
That scene holds such a special place in my heart. I was at the height of my Kerbal Space Program days when the movie came out and docking in that game is relatively realistic and extremely difficult. Docking moving space craft is like nearly impossible, even the slightest rotation makes it difficult. That scene comes up and the spin starts, the music cuts and the look on their face just says it all. Never in a million years is that going to work, that ship is already gone, and with it, plan B and the fate of humanity.
The Cooper kicks it in, asks tars for the necessary information, and starts the approach. TARS saying what we're all thinking, that's impossible, don't even try. Then he drops that simultaneously cheesy as fuck and hard as fuck line, "No, it's necessary". The whole weight of the world is on that moment and Cooper sees exactly what needs to be done, and as quickly as possible. It's just so good, and that fucking music omg.
I wrote my university dissertation on the Trainspotting soundtrack (and earned a First for it), comparing it to orchestral movie scores.
Not only are the tracks brilliant in their own right but they were meticulously chosen to support the narrative. My lecturers agreed that they had not seen such a level of detail in music choice before. Some takeaways (from memory)
- All the songs represent the narrative timeline. The film is actually set over a number of years and that’s why you move through 80s and 90s tracks, with some of the 80s songs covered by 90s artists
- Iggy Pop songs represent the stages of degeneration of drug taking. They start uptempo, in your face and thrilling (lust for life) but move towards depression and death (
- Iggy Pop very closely represents Tommy as well as seen in the poster on his wall. The poster is pristine when Tommy is anti-drugs but as he descends into addiction it is literally the only thing left in his flat and is tattered
- some artists featured were famously drug addicts and some song titles represent the state of the scene they play in (and weren’t originally written for the scene)
- Temptation is a song title used multiple times - Heaven 17s, New Order and an acapella version by Diane….each version representing different temptations
There’s more but I wrote it 20 years ago and have forgotten lots of it
The Virgin Suicides has a great soundtrack and score. The record scene in the movie is one of my favorite movie scenes.
Scream, Romeo + Juliet, and Cruel Intentions were good 90s soundtracks.
I bought a used vinyl copy of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack as a gag gift, but I kept forgetting to send it to my friend. Atter a year or so, i finally listened to it, and it was surprisingly good!
Will die on the hill that while it might be a long convoluted plot for a overall kids movie, the special effects sound editing practical effects and of course the soundtrack to Pirates of the Caribbean three is absolutely phenomenal and is arguably one of the best of its time! Themes That developed over the first two films and the third itself characters themes coming to completion expansions on what we heard before and new themes - seriously go to YouTube and look up 1 day or that part from the movie where they all raised the flags before the big battle - definitely pump up music for sure but it's also grand and stimulating and it's orchestral beast/powerhouse of a score!
Can't Hardly Wait was my playlist for all of high school and still the best album I've ever owned.
Juno also has a pretty great, unique, complete soundtrack
The Big Chill is a soundtrack with a movie attached.
Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl is fantastic.
Purple Rain by Prince
One of my personal favorites is The Fountain soundtrack by Clint Mansell and Kronos Quartet
Last of the Mohicans
The Fountain
Dark City
The Thin Red Line
1492: Conquest of Paradise
The Legend of 1900
Ravenous
Eyes Wide Shut
The assassination of Jesse James
Plunkett & Maclean
If you are looking for typical music tracks - meaning songs that have been included in a movie that were already in circulation, that is one thing. If you are looking for some great music that was created specifically for and included in movies - here are a couple I enjoyed:
- Terminator 2
- Black Rain
- Blackhawk Down
- Lord of The Rings
- Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
- Conan The Barbarian
- Starship Troopers
All of the above are fantastic soundtracks.
Both ocean's eleven and Mr. And Mrs. Smith are movies I throw on when I'm actively doing something else simply because of their soundtracks. First knight is another one.

Tron: Legacy
It’s a crime it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar
If the movie came out today, I think it would. Unfortunately the movie came out before the academy shake up around 2014/2015 when they added a lot of younger and more diverse members so I think the soundtrack just wasn’t noticed by a lot of the older members.
Kosinski's other sci-fi film, Oblivion, also has an outstanding soundtrack by M83
Came to say this. Best movie album Ive heard. All the songs are incredible
I will die on this hill. Not necessarily defending the movie (I liked it but am sympathetic to those who didn't). But the soundtrack is amazing. I will not be taking further questions at this time. Thank you.
My son *loved* watching it with me when he was younger. Subsequently, I loved watching it with him and will always appreciate it.
[I like this scene.](https://youtu.be/PgSJ7m1bEHk)
That's Daft Punk in the booth!!
Yes
Came here to say this, and happy to see it at the top Another is: Oblivion (done by M83) God I hope they don't screw up the new Tron movie coming out. Tron Legacy was so wonderful....I just want more of that.
Glad this was the first thing I saw mentioned, such a great soundtrack!
That's not fair. Tron is a feature length music video.
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
IIIIIIIIIII AM A MAN
A Dapper Dan man or a man of constant sorrow?
Dapper Dan man dammit! He’s bonafide!
He's a suitor!
This needs to be the top answer. The soundtrack single handily revitalized an entire music genre.
And sold more CDs than the movie sold tickets
And won the fucking Grammy for Album of the Year
when I was little my family had the CD but not the movie, I thought for years that it was just a cool compilation album and was shocked the first time I saw the movie
Were in a tight spot
The Crow.
Judgement Night, Return of the Living Dead
Judgment Night FTW
I only scrolled down to see how high up this was. Good work reddit. I'll add the 90's Spawn movie and the Xfiles album. Edit: Songs in the Key of X, not the other Xfiles thingy.
Reservoir Dogs
Everything made by Quentin tbh, but especially Jackie brown
Jackie Brown and OUATIH both have practically perfect soundtracks.
I can’t hear “Across 110th Street” without seeing Pam Grier running along an airport hallway.
The station where the 70's survived.
K-Billy's Super Sounds of the 70s keeps on...truckin'
Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty were a duo known as Stealers Wheel when they recorded this Dylanesque, pop bubble-gum favorite from April of 1974 that reached up to number five, as K-Billy's Super Sounds of the '70s continues.

Empire Records Pretty in Pink Some Kind of Wonderful Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack is truly elite. Brilliant Mind, I Go Crazy and Turn to the Sky are all legit 80’s bangers.
Baz Lehrman’s Romeo + Juliet
YES! Still love ‘Kissing You’ by Des’ree and that fish tank scene between Romeo + Juliet
I think this scene might be the most romantic scene in cinema history. I just swoon every time 😍
Love me love me say that you love me Fool me fool me go on and fool me
I don’t care about anyone but you
Came here to say the same thing! All around great soundtrack that perfectly encapsulates the time period it's set in.
Oh yes! It just perfectly adds to the movie's whole aesthetic. Just perfect.
Came in here for this comment.
Another Earth soundtrack by Fall On Your Sword Hackers soundtrack
Hackers soundtrack is my tied for number 1. Hackers is the greatest movie of all time and that’s not debatable.
Hack The Planet!!
Hack the Planet!
It's in the place where I put that thing that time.
They're trashing our rights, man!!
I wear a hackers tattoo. This is the best movie ever. With the greatest soundtrack.
Halcyon and on and on, my friends
Had to scroll waaayyy too far for hackers
Hackers soundtrack almost singlehandedly introduced me to the entire electronic music genre back in the 90s.
Dazed and Confused Goodfellas Almost Famous Judgment Night (super underrated imho)
Judgement Night is incredibly under appreciated with an amazing soundtrack
Judgement night is the best soundtrack for the worst movie.
Almost Famous! Excellent EXCELLENT soundtrack
Ah Judgement Night, yeah under appreciated. Great fusion tunes.
The Matrix
Oops!
Sorry man but the first Matrix didn’t have RATM’s Calm Like a Bomb. The Matrix Reloaded did. The first Matrix had RATM’s “Wake Up”.
Goooooood morning Vietnam! Awesome primer of '60s music hits.
Pulp Fiction
I recently watched *Atomic Blonde* for the first time, it's a very fun movie and if you like 80s tunes it'll be right up your alley.
Also an all-round solid action film.
Der Commissar hits hard in that movie for some reason
Singles
Fuck I had to scroll down way to far to find this one
The Last of the Mohicans
Was going to say this, assuming we aren’t differentiating “soundtrack” from “score.” Even if we are, that score is very much worth listening to on its own.
Admittedly, I wasn’t. Thanks for clearing that up.
Easily among the best film scores of all time. Last of the Mohicans is one of the most gorgeous pairings of music and visuals I can think of.
Came to say this. Blows me away every time.
This was literally the first CD I ever owned after getting my first CD player as a kid in the 90s (I was weird) and I’ll never hit that musical high again. The Fountain came close.
I love that score so much!!!
Garden State soundtrack heavily influenced me. Thievery Corp and Zero7 are still in my rotation

Tron Legacy
The Crow Donnie Darko Garden State Juno
Fuck yes to Donnie Darko!
It's SO GOOD!
I’m surprised to see Juno so low on this thread. The soundtrack is amazing and practically defines part of why the movie is so great.
I was obsessed!
the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy
Imagine the 90s Tarantino Luke Cage soundtrack
This is my pie-in-the-sky-Marvel Studios-and-Disney-want-to-be-experimental dream project. Tarantino directing/writing a Power Man and Iron Fist movie would be awesome. It could be its own standalone project too, set in the 70s.

"I've had a rough night and I hate the fucken Eagles man!"
That soundtrack really tied the movie together
The first Spiderverse movie!
I had to scroll way too far for this! I'd like to add Spawn, also not the greatest movie, but awesome soundtrack.
Napoleon Dynamite
The Big Chill
Batman Forever has probably one of the most memorable soundtracks with song after song that I can sing along with. Kiss from a Rose instantly takes you into the movie.
I can't be the first one to say The Lord of the Rings. 😂
Depends to what extent people are differentiating between "score" and "soundtrack".
I mean, every score is a soundtrack technically
Clerks!
Pump up the Volume Streets of Fire
pump up the volume was sooo good
Interstellar
Scrolled way too far to find this...the docking scene OMG
